Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes' Relationship: A Complete Timeline

They may have started out as good friends, but these days Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes are one of pop music’s most talked about couples.

While there are some naysayers online who think it’s all about publicity, the two singers appear to being going strong after a sexy performance at the MTV VMAs and some well-documented PDA. Now, fans are analyzing every move they make and lyric they sing to try to learn more about the relationship they call #Shawmila.

But how did we get here? Let’s take a look back at how it all began.

July 2014: Cabello (as a member of Fifth Harmony) and Mendes meet while they are both opening acts for Austin Mahone’s tour. The singers recently discussed that time with V Magazine. “I remember thinking we met on the Austin Mahone tour, and I remember I wanted to hang out with you, but you were always on the tour bus, just learning guitar,” Cabello said. Mendes replied, “Yeah, that was me. I didn’t talk to anybody. You were the only person that talked to me. Like, you were the only one of everybody on that tour who would say words to me. Actually, I think if we go into our DM’s or something, there’s a photo from the day we met, I think.”

“And I thought you were out of your mind,” he continued. “I’d be in my bus where no one could see me. I’d be looking through the window and I’d see you, like, flying around on a scooter and jumping and doing cartwheels. I’d be like, she’s insane. Close the window and go to sleep.”

April 2015: Mendes plays a game of “Lips, Wife, or Leave It” and opts for Cabello as the “wife” over Chloe Grace Moretz and Jade Thirwall from Little Mix. “Yeah, she rocks,” he said.

November 2015: Cabello and Mendes drop a song called “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which sparks dating rumors. “We were just backstage hanging out,” Mendes told Rolling Stone of how they wrote the song while on Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour. “I pulled out my guitar and we were just messing around, not really thinking about writing a song.”

Taylor Swift's Reaction to Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes' Almost-Kiss at the VMAs Is Priceless

The VMAs packed in a lot in this year: There was that epic Missy Elliott performance, a reminder that Normani is a gift to humankind, a Lizzo-in-red moment, a Taylor Swift opening, and a duet with Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes that had the crowd screaming. For a second, it seemed like they were going to share their first, non-paparazzi kiss in public, but they ultimately decided against it—leaving people like Swift, among others, with their mouths hanging wide open.

When Cabello and Mendes leaned in for a kiss during their performance, celebs lost their minds in unison. Bebe Rexha was caught on camera shouting, “kiss, kiss, kiss!” Sophie Turner and the Jonas Brothers all held their hands up and screamed in anticipation. Swift , who is a close friend of Cabello’s, held a hand to her mouth, gasping at the the build-up and appeared to murmur, “Oh, shit.” (Head over to the MTV VMAs official Twitter page to see more videos like this.)

Taylor Swift had been watching the whole Cabello-Mendes scene go down with her friends and collaborators Todrick Hall and Dexter Mayfield, who worked on the video for “You Need to Calm Down.” When the video won awards for Video of the Year” and “Video for Good,” Swift brought Hall, Mayfield, and several of the drag queens who performed in the video onstage with her. Swift reportedly refused to perform on the award show unless MTV gave all of the drag queens awards, too. Hall and Mayfield also did some gasping during the “Señorita” showcase.

But Cabello and Mendes didn’t give in. They ended up hugging and walking offstage together, leaving everyone hanging in anticipation. It sounds like most people, particularly Joe Jonas, aren’t going to forget that they wanted to see a kiss. He shared a video of his reaction and wrote in the caption, “#VMAs are over, but we’re still waiting for that kiss tho ? @camila_cabello @shawnmendes.”

I'm Sweating After Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes' 2019 MTV VMAs Performance

That being said, Cabello did say in this same interview that her new album was made in a period of time when she was falling in love. If she’s not referring to Mendes, then who is she talking about?

“Falling in love is like an infinite amount of levels and layers and angles,” she said. “I fell in love and just opened up. Everything was written in present moment.”

Of course, photos speak louder than words, and Mendes and Cabello have been photographed getting their PDA on several times now. But it looks like these two are keeping mum on what’s real and what’s not. The speculation continues!

Watch the Trailer for Noah Centineo and Camila Mendes' Netflix Rom-Com The Perfect Date

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before alum Noah Centineo is already the Internet’s boyfriend, so his next role isn’t too much of a stretch given that it’s literally called The Perfect Date. In it, he plays a guy who gets paid to be a dream date for young women—so, yeah, the casting decision couldn’t have been better.

The trailer, which Netflix just released today, only adds to the appeal. It introduces us to Centineo as Brooks Rattigan, a high school senior who hopes to attend Yale but doesn’t have the money for the expensive tuition. “I’ve always wanted to date the most popular girl, drive the nicest car and go to the fanciest school. But I can’t afford any of that,” he says in the clip.

To get some extra cash, he ends up escorting Celia Lieberman (played by Laura Marano) to a school dance. It goes so well that it inspires a plan: create an app where people can pay him to be their plus-one at events. His job is to take on the role of whatever stand-in boyfriend they need for the occasion. In the trailer alone, he pretends to be a cowboy, an art connoisseur, and more.

Because this is a romantic comedy, of course things eventually get knotty. Rattigan starts dating his crush Shelby Pace—played by Riverdale favorite Camila Mendes—and starts living out some rich kid fantasies that distance him from his friends. Naturally, there’s a tricky love triangle with Shelby and Celia to deal with too. (Fun fact: Marano and Centineo actually worked with each other on Austin & Ally back in the day.)

Centineo, of course, brings all the Peter Kavinsky charm that made him a breakout star in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (and, hopefully one day soon, the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel).

The Perfect Date is out on April 12 on Netflix, so mark your calendars and prepare to swoon.

Shawn Mendes' Reactions to Fans Covering His Songs Are Just So Pure

Shawn Mendes has some capital B bops. “Treat You Better” has a chorus that still slams even after 15 straight listens; “Lost in Japan” is super funky and fun; and “Youth” (with Khalid) pulsates even with all that guitar pluckiness. Mendes has a great voice, too, so you can’t go wrong with adding several of his songs to your next Spotify playlist.

And while you’re at it, maybe consider adding a few fan covers to your playlist too. The pop sensibility of Mendes’ music makes it very easy to interpret and cover in a variety of different ways. From slowed-down acoustic covers to harp instrumentals and piano sets, Mendes’ fans on YouTube are super creative when it comes to their covers.

So, naturally, we had to get Mendes’ thoughts on a few of them. We had the “Stitches” singer stop by our office recently and check out a bunch of fan covers of his songs on the Internet. His responses, of course, were so sweet and pure.

“You know what’s so awesome is that you can clearly tell when someone’s done editing to their voice, and she’s completely natural,” Mendes said of person covering his music. “You sound like you kill it every time,” he said of someone else.

Even more wonderful than Mendes’ reactions are his fans’ faces when they realize he was listening. “That’s why I post covers to maybe get recognized by one of my favorite artists and, well, I guess that just happened,” one fan said. “I never thought this would ever, ever, ever happen. I’m so happy. Thank you.”

Watch all the covers (and Mendes’ reactions) for yourself in the video, above.
