Erin Andrews Chose a Neon Green Sweater For Her First Big Game.

I’m being truthful when I say I’ve never watched a televised sporting event from start to finish—baseball is boring, football too complicated, and I tend to lose interest in the frenetic back-and-forth of basketball, soccer, and hockey. Even so, I’ve known who Erin Andrews was since the early 2000s when she started working as a sideline reporter for ESPN, probably because there were so few women in her field that she became newsmaking by virtue of just existing. Since then, I’d argue that she’s risen to become one of the most well-regarded, influential sports reporters in the game, and the fact that she landed a hosting gig on Dancing With the Stars in 2014 speaks to her mass appeal with American audiences.

For her episode of “What I Wore When,” Erin wanted to talk about a sweater. Specifically, the three-quarter-sleeve V-neck she chose for her first major on-air job: Game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup playoffs between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Calgary Flames. A monumental opportunity for any burgeoning sports reporter, and one that seemed to call for neon green.

“I’m from Tampa Bay, and it was a huge game,” Erin told me. “I was like, ‘I really, really need an awesome shirt to wear.'” And so begins the story of how Erin and her parents went to the mall to find her something perfect. “We went to Ann Taylor, and it was in the front of the store, the front table … It was bright fluorescent green. I remember there was a yellow fluorescent one [and] a pink one. For some reason, that green one was calling my name.”

The Best Neon Eyeshadows and Eyeliners to Try

One quick note of warning: There’s recently been some question over the safety of neon eye makeup, because many fluorescent color additives are not FDA-approved to be used on your eye area (despite the fact they’re approved for use in the E.U., where cosmetic restrictions are more strict). As always, be sure to read the labels on your products carefully to confirm their intended use, and stop using any products immediately if you’re experiencing any irritation.

Monday: Slime Liner

Bella Cacciatore

I started by dipping my toes into neon with this perfect slime green liner by Dior. All I did was my classic wing, just in a bolder color, made super easy by the liner’s slanted tip. The look was actually surprisingly subtle, I don’t think anyone even noticed unless they got right up in my face. For a Monday morning it was perfect, but I would actually amp it up with a thicker line for an after-hours event. Next time I would tightline my eyes with black for a little definition, but all and all I was off to a good start.

Tuesday: Lilac Corners

I’m not super confident in my shadow skills, so I wanted to do something that built off a liner look. I was actually inspired by this look on Rowan Blanchard, but the day-glo yellow seemed a bit much, so I opted for a vivd lilac. I wasn’t sure if it qualifies as neon, but it’s in my Huda Beauty Neon Obsessions palette, so I think I’m in the clear. I started by drawing on my wing, and then shaping my eye with a touch of warm brown shadow in the crease, then I packed the lilac on top of a primer with a pointed brush. I found it crucial to apply mascara before going in with the purple, as I always get mascara specs all over my lid, and this way made it way less muddy.

I actually loved this look, concentrating the color in the inner corners made it feel more approachable, and I love the way it gave my eyes a sleepy bedroom eye look. I felt like a sexy alien, and like that it added an avant garde touch to my outfit while still feeling totally wearable and office appropriate.

Wednesday: Pretty in Pink

This was by far the easiest look to do. I simply prepped my lids with Urban Decay Primer Potion (a ride or die for this entire experiment) and dusted the brightest pink from the same Huda palette all over my lids, stopping at my crease so it’s didn’t look clownish.

Again, I applied mascara before my shadow, but I used a ton of coats to make sure I didn’t look like I had pink eye. I coordinated the shadow with a pink dress, and I actually think the matching looked really cool—to be honest, this was the only day my clothes and makeup made sense together. Since the shadow was so simple, it came off interesting without looking like I was trying too hard. This one also got me the most compliments.

Thursday: Pink Wings

This is the only look I wanted to wipe off right away. I had hoped to do a floating liner, but after an attempt on one eye, I realized I was not skilled enough to pull it off. During this whole week I had started with my eyes instead of my base for moments like this, so I could quickly remove mistakes without dismantling my whole face. I was running late—one downside of neon eyeshadow is that it’s so much more time consuming—so I went with what I know and did a quick wing using my Huda palette and a setting spray to make a liner.

The Best Neon Nail Polishes for 2019

This might be blasphemous coming from a New Yorker, but: Neutrals are out this summer. Instead of our usual minimal capsule wardrobes, everyone is indulging their inner 12-year-old and piling on the baby-doll dresses, tie-dye, and jelly sandals. This fun loving spirit has bled over to our manicures, where statement nails are having a moment.

While nail art like confetti, stars, and rainbows are all good and fun, the simplest—and most summer appropriate—way to have a little fun with your mani is a bold neon. From the slime green that every fashion girl is obsessed with to hot pink fit for Barbie, neon is popping up left and right on Instagram. Even celebs like Kylie Jenner and Selena Gomez are getting in on the trend.

Like most good things, the perfect neon nails do take a bit of work. To get the color to really pop, add a coat of white polish under the neon for full florescence. Even still, the color might take a bit of building up, so work with a few layers of thin coats to keep the polish from getting too gloppy. A good topcoat will add extra shine and keep bright colors from fading.

We selected our favorite neon polishes that will keep your (safe!) tan popping past Labor Day. Shop our must-haves below.

How to Wear the Fall 2018 Neon Trend

Fashion has, recently, gotten brighter. A lot brighter. Like construction vest bright. Neon clothes are everywhere. When the trend showed up at Prada’s Fall 2018 show last season, it was bound to trickle down to brands from ASOS to Zara, as Miuccia Prada has a way of knowing exactly what we want to wear at any given moment. And it’s probably due to a lot more than the colors being bright and fun. Neon colors are often seen in futuristic dystopian films like Blade Runner or The Matrix and 2018 is basically just one whole dystopian drama (except it unfortunately isn’t fictional), right?

As fall 2018 approached, we’ve seen street-style stars and celebrities really embracing neon, from Sarah Paulson’slime green Prada dress for the Oceans 8 Premiere to Rihanna and Tracee Ellis Ross doing their best impression of Barbie dolls in fuchsia gowns. Blake Lively loves a lime green suit. Kylie has been known to go all out in all neon orange looks. So has Bella Hadid.

But neon clothes aren’t just for the runway, the privileged, or the famous. They’re immensely wearable, even in your daily wardrobe! See below for our top picks for each of the three biggest fluorescent color trends: hot green, pink and orange. If anything, they’re guaranteed to make your fall outfits stand out.

Bella Thorne Has Neon Red Hair Now, and It's Literally Fire

Bella Thorne—actress, singer, and hair chameleon—is changing things up once again. We’ve seen her hair in a multitude of colors: platinum blond, bright red-orange, a fierce hot pink, a shiny blond, and jet black. And that’s just this year! (She’s so known for changing up her color, in fact, that she’s even asked her Twitter followers to predict her next shade.)

But just when we got used to her latest shade—a warm, cinnamon-y red—Thorne debuted yet another new color. And it’s one of her brightest shades yet.

On Tuesday, the natural blond posted a tweet showing her in a black sweatshirt with the hood pulled up over fiery red hair. And we mean five-alarm, blazing, fiery red. Thorne’s fans seemed to love the new look—her tweet has 14,800 favorites and nearly 1,000 retweets at the time of publish. Dozens of complimentary comments have also been showered on the look (a few users even called her a “rebel queen.”)

For comparison, here’s a recent shot of her previous copper color:

And here’s her new hair:

Electric, right? She’s gone this vivid before, but it’s usually been with a hot pink tone, whereas this looks straight-up red. It’s also pretty astounding how often she switches up her color, yet her hair still looks pretty healthy. Whatever she—and her stylist—are doing, it’s working.

If you’re thinking about making a major hair color change yourself, Kim Kardashian—who recently made the dramatic shift from dark brown to platinum blond—swears by the Nexxus Emergecee Protein Treatment to keep hair strong. And for a little shade inspiration, check out these hair color trends that are huge right now.
