Meghan Markle Reveals How She Chose Her 'Perfect' Wedding Tiara

Meghan Markle‘s had more fashion moments than we can count since becoming the Duchess of Sussex, but it’s her royal wedding dress and tiara that are the most memorable yet. Both items are now on display at Windsor Castle with the Queen’s blessing—along with a surprise interview where the duchess explains exactly what made her “Markle sparkle” moment so perfect.

The Duchess and Duke of Sussex recorded a surprise joint interview to accompany the exhibit, titled A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. As visitors gaze at Markle’s stunning 16-and-a-half-foot wedding veil, Givenchy gown, and 100-watt tiara, they can hear directly from Markle how she landed on the beautiful bandeau tiara she wore for her wedding day.

“When it came to the tiara on the day, I was very fortunate to be able to chose this gorgeous art deco style bandeau tiara,” Markle explains on the exhibit’s recording. “Harry and I had gone to Buckingham Palace to meet with her Majesty the Queen to select one of the options that were there which was an incredibly surreal day as you can imagine.”

So what made Queen Mary’s 1932 diamond bandeau tiara the one for Meghan? “I think it was just perfect because it was so clean and simple—and also to that point, an extension of what Clare and I had been trying to do with the dress which was have something that could be so incredibly timeless but still feel modern,” she says.

The fairytale moment wouldn’t have been complete without Prince Harry by her side. He found the moment just as special as the bride. “Every girl’s dream to be able to try on a tiara, and, funnily enough, the one that suited the best, the one that looked the best on you without question, I shouldn’t have really even been there, but such an incredible loan by my grandmother, it was very sweet,” he says.

The exhibit includes more fascinating details about planning their fairytale wedding, from choosing the ceremony music to picking that famous bouquet of flowers. When it came to Markle’s custom Givenchy wedding dress, she says her connection with designer Clare Waight Keller was instantaneous. “I met her and I just knew it, I walked back to the house and I said to Harry, ‘She’s going to do my dress, I just know it,’ she says.

Could this wedding have been more ‘perfect’? We think not.

Kate Middleton Has Only Worn a Tiara Seven Times—See Them All Here

It seems surprising, but Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, has only worn a tiara seven times. The first was the Cartier halo style she showed off on her wedding day, the second was a diamond-and-pearl creation originally worn frequently in the 1920s, and was loaned to Kate by the queen for the annual state reception in 2013, then she wore the same tiara again in honor of the U.K. visit from China’s president, Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan. She’s borrowed the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, given to Princess Diana as a wedding gift from the Queen, for diplomatic functions—most recently, for a state banquet welcoming ing Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands to the U.K. We were thrilled to see another sparkly princess moment, but it does make you wonder—why doesn’t Kate wear tiaras more often?

First, let’s discuss the tiaras Kate has worn…

Her wedding tiara has nearly 1,000 diamonds in total and was initially purchased from Cartier in 1936 as an anniversary gift from King George VI to his wife. Eight years later it was regifted to the current queen as an 18th-birthday gift (possibly becoming the best regift of all time).

Here’s a fascinating tiaras-worn-down-the-aisle fact for you: While it’s not typically observed anymore, a bride would historically have worn a tiara from her family’s collection on her wedding day before moving on to using her new husband’s family pieces afterward. Kate didn’t observe this, of course, but Princess Diana did, wearing a Spencer tiara when she married Prince Charles. Post-nuptials, it was all royal family jewels for Di.

The second style, which you can see more clearly on the below shot of Princess Margaret, is commonly known as the Lotus Flower or Papyrus tiara. It originally belonged to the Queen Mother and lived life as a necklace before being turned into a tiara.

She then paired the same Lotus Flower Tiara with a red Jenny Packham gown and a stunning updo for for a state banquet at Buckingham Palace.

Middleton repeated the same red gown with the iconic tiara also known as the Cambridge Lover’s Knot, originally worn by Princess Diana.

In July 2017, the Duchess attended a state banquet at Buckingham Palace on day one of the Spanish state visit again wearing Princess Di’s Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara.

She once again wore the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara in December 2017 while attending the annual winter party at Buckingham Palace. This time Middleton paired the piece with matching diamond and pearl drop earrings and a diamond necklace.

In October 2018, Middleton donned the Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara once more, for a state banquet at Buckingham Palace in honor of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands’ visit to the U.K. She paired it with an Alexander McQueen gown.

So, why doesn’t Kate wear tiaras more often?

There’s no firm answer as to why Kate doesn’t wear the glamorous accessory more often. Official rules about when they’re to be worn don’t exist (though they’re common for white-tie events and state occasions held in the evening). Many have suggested that the duchess’s aversion to the bling might be another facet of her love for high street style and dedication to making the monarchy feel modern and approachable. Others have speculated it’s a thoughtful choice in order to distinguish herself from Princess Diana, who was a controversial royal for the family and loved a tiara moment.

Here's When Meghan Markle Might Be Wearing Her Next Tiara

The royal wedding happened all the way back in May, which means it’s been almost five whole months since Meghan Markle put on a tiara. As you’ll recall, she wore the Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau Tiara, a gorgeous headpiece made in 1932 that featured a stunning center brooch, a flexible platinum band, and more diamonds than we can count. Having been given the chance to rock such a sparkler like that, you’d think that Markle would be wearing tiaras left and right. Unfortunately, there are rules that govern when the Duchess of Sussex and other women in the royal family can and can’t wear a tiara. But her tiara-wearing dry spell might be coming to an end: According to Marie Claire, she just may be wearing her second tiara as a royal in just two weeks.

As Marie Claire reported, royal women can only wear tiaras after 6 p.m. (with the exception of very special occasions like royal weddings) and after they’re married. In fact, as we reported, Kate Middleton has only worn a tiara five times besides her own royal wedding, thrice for state banquets, once for an annual winter party at Buckingham Palace, and once for Chinese president Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan’s visit to the U.K.

Luckily, Marie Claire pointed out that there’s a state dinner hosted by Fijian president Jioji Konrote during Markle and Prince Harry’s first international royal tour. With this being almost guaranteed to be an event that requires formal evening wear, there’s definitely a possibility that the Duchess of Sussex will be able to show off another royal tiara. If so, will she pick the Spencer Tiara, famously worn by Princess Diana on her wedding day, the Queen Elizabeth II–approved Russian Fringe Tiara, the Strathmore Rose Tiara, or another diamond-encrusted heirloom?

Here's Why Meghan Markle Can't Wear a Tiara, But Kate Middleton Can

With the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle now just months away, it stands to reason we might catch a glimpse of the American actress sporting a tiara during a formal event or two in the coming weeks. After all, she’s basically in with the royal family now, and Kate Middleton has been seen wearing one on no fewer than six separate occasions. But as it turns out, our hopes of seeing photos surface of Markle at Kensington Palace in a crown will have to wait—and there’s a very specific reason why.

According to The Mirror, it’s strict British etiquette that dictates why Kate Middleton can wear a tiara, and Markle can’t. And it boils down to one thing: marriage.

Tradition in the United Kingdom prohibits unmarried women from wearing tiaras—and in fact, the accessory is much more than just a gorgeous proclamation of royal affiliation. As explained by etiquette expert Grant Harold in an interview with BBC, the tiara has even more historical significance than simply proving royal affiliation: Through its doubling as a signifier of betrothal, it shows—in British culture—that one is off the market and not looking for a husband.

That’s why, following her marriage to Prince William, Kate (now the Duchess of Cambridge) became immediately eligible to wear one. And after her royal nuptials in May of this year, Markle will be allowed to do the same.

So when exactly will we see the American actress in the bejeweled headpiece? Well, if history repeats itself, we could very well see Markle wearing one on her wedding day—Kate Middleton did for her wedding to Prince William, after all. But generally speaking, per royal etiquette, tiaras are an evening-only accessory, so it’s also a possibility that the bride-to-be will until after her spring wedding to make her first appearance in a royal tiara.

Then again, the actress has been known to break a royal rule or two. So—as always with all things Meghan and Harry—let the guessing games begin!

Kate Middleton Wears Princess Diana's Favorite Tiara to Party at Buckingham Palace

UPDATE: Kate Middleton has been spotted wearing a remarkable piece of jewelry—Princess Diana’s favorite tiara—for the second time this year. On December 5 the Duchess of Cambridge wore the Lover’s Knot crown to the annual winter party at Buckingham Palace. There the royals hosted diplomats from more than 170 missions across the United Kingdom, People reported. Middleton paired the famous tiara with matching diamond and pearl drop earrings and an equally dazzling diamond necklace.

JULY 2017: Every princess needs the perfect tiara. And for Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton hers comes borrowed from Princess Diana—because when you’re part of the royal family, you get your pick of the best jewels. At a recent state banquet for visiting royalty King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, Middleton wore a stunning pink lace Marchesa dress, a statement necklace borrowed for the night from the Queen, and a very special tiara. The diamond and pearl Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, as Vanity Fair notes, was a wedding gift to Princess Diana and known to be one of Diana’s favorite pieces.

The tiara is a historical treasure and is a little more than a century old, according to People—it was commissioned by Queen Mary sometime in 1913 or 1914. It has 19 arches and a total of 38 drop-shaped pearls.

The first time the Duchess of Cambridge wore the special tiara (is it now acceptable to name all of our jewelry, too?) was at a state banquet in 2015, according to People, and this year’s celebration is the second time she’s worn it since, so it seems like it has quickly become one of her favorites as well. Custom dictates that only certain occasions allow for a tiara, and as the largest event Buckingham Palace throws each year—this year, with more than one thousand people from 130 different countries, Vanity Fair reports—a state banquet definitely qualifies.

Following the Duchess’s wardrobe choices is a favorite pastime, especially because of her affinity for mixing it up from custom designer clothes to J.Crew; Middleton even wore a $51 Zara dress on the way to the wedding of her sister, Pippa. And clearly Kate is not afraid to re-wear her faves, which luckily means her mother-in-law’s prized possession can live on.
