With the Coronavirus Keeping Millions at Home, Uber Is Giving Free Rides to Help Survivors of Domestic Violence Flee to Safety

During a worldwide pandemic, the safest place to be is home.

But for people enduring domestic violence, home is never safe. The coronavirus pandemic—and the stay-at-home orders, social distancing measures, and quarantining that have been instituted in an attempt to keep the disease at bay—have the unintended side effect of trapping domestic violence survivors with their abusers.

As if escaping an abusive situation isn’t painfully difficult under regular circumstances, attempting to leave during a pandemic means either braving public transportation or coordinating with friends or relatives who could themselves be at an elevated risk. Domestic abuse, which disproportionately affects women and children, turns the drudgery of waiting out a pandemic from home into a day-to-day hell.

But for some survivors, one part of the process is about to get a little easier. Uber is providing 50,000 free rides to domestic violence shelters and safe havens. Through shelters and other groups that have partnered with Uber to hand out the codes, free rides will be available in over 35 cities across 16 countries. When survivors contact shelters and help lines, those organizations will be able to share a code from Uber that will allow them to take a free, fast ride to safety.

“Many survivors of domestic violence have no access to a car, and the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced public transportation options,” Allison Randall, Vice President for Policy and Emerging Issues at the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) said in a statement. “Local domestic violence programs are still open and available to help survivors, but without transportation, survivors have no way to get there, much less to a doctor’s appointment, grocery store, or courthouse. We are so grateful to Uber–our longstanding partner–for providing these lifesaving free rides to survivors.” In addition to the free rides, the company has announced it will donate 45,000 meals to survivors in need.

The initiative, part of a larger pledge by the ridesharing company to provide 10 million free rides and food deliveries to people in need during the pandemic, is led by Tracey Breeden. The head of Women’s Safety and Gender Based Violence Programs at Uber, Breeden previously worked as a police officer and a detective for nearly 15 years, focusing on violence against women. “It doesn’t matter what’s going on in the world—violence against women and children doesn’t stop,” Breeden tells Glamour. “It just shows up differently sometimes. Domestic violence is not a new crisis, and everybody can play a role in working to help create safe spaces and helping people get help safely. It’s critically important to take COVID seriously by sitting at home, but it’s also important to not forget that for some people being at home is not safe.”

Of course, the kind of help that Uber is offering isn’t entirely risk-free either, particularly for its drivers. The company will be paying workers a full fare for these rides, but it’s the workers who will be driving to the homes of potential abusers, and sharing small spaces with strangers in their cars, despite the CDC’s social distancing recommendations. And, of course, Uber drivers are independent contractors, which means that despite functioning as a kind of first-responder in this and other crises, they don’t get benefits like Social Security, health insurance, or paid sick days, and they’re responsible for damage to their own vehicles.

Still, for survivors with few options, the initiative could be a lifeline. Breeden says that Uber’s partners at domestic violence organizations have shared that given the constraints of shelter-at-home, many survivors are utilizing chatrooms to speak with advocates privately. “What will happen is that shelter, that advocate will work with that survivor to find the safest way to provide them help and get them to another location,” Breeden says, “They certainly aren’t going to send a driver into a situation that they know is potentially harmful.” She also notes Uber apps have an easy-access 911 button for drivers, and that the app allows survivors to enter cross streets instead of their exact address in case an abuser has access to their account as well.

Ikea Meatballs: Here's How to Make Them at Home

You might not be able to walk into one of their stores right now and pick up, say, a new dresser—but Ikea‘s meatballs are now accessible from your kitchen.

Following in the footsteps of Disney—which recently released their churros, Dole Whip, cookie fries, and grilled cheese recipes—the Swedish furniture giant has made their famous meatball recipe available to all. “We know that some people might be missing our meatballs, which is why we’ve released an at-home alternative which, using easily accessible ingredients, will help those looking for some inspiration in the kitchen,” Lorena Lourido, country food manager at Ikea, said in a press release, per CNN. “Staying at home can be hard, but we want to help make everyone’s lives that little bit easier and more enjoyable. Bon appétit or, smaklig måltid, as we say in Sweden!”

Here’s how to make Ikea’s meatballs with cream sauce. The recipe, per CNN, reads as follows:

Ingredients (16-20 meatballs)

  • 500 grams (1.1 pounds) ground beef
  • 250 grams (slightly more than ½ pound) ground pork
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic (crushed or minced)
  • 100 grams (3.5 ounces) breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tablespoons of whole milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Cream sauce:

  • Dash of oil
  • 40 grams (1.4 ounces) butter
  • 40 grams (1.4 ounces) plain flour
  • 150 ml (5 fluid ounces) vegetable stock
  • 150 ml (5 fluid ounces) beef stock
  • 150 ml (5 fluid ounces) thick double cream
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Directions:

  1. Combine beef and pork mince and mix thoroughly to break up any lumps. Add finely chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg and mix. Add milk and season well with salt and pepper.

  2. Shape mixture into small, round balls. Place on a clean plate, cover and store in the fridge for two hours (to help them hold their shape while cooking).

  3. In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When hot, gently add your meatballs and brown on all sides.

  4. When browned, add to an ovenproof dish and cover. Place in a hot oven, 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 180 degrees Celsius, and cook for a further 30 minutes.

And for the cream sauce:

  1. Melt the butter in a frying pan. Whisk in the plain flour and continue cooking, stirring continuously for two minutes.

  2. Add the vegetable stock and beef stock and continue to stir. Add the thick double cream, soy sauce and Dijon mustard.

  3. Bring to a simmer and allow the sauce to thicken. Continue to stir.

  4. When ready to eat, serve with your favorite potatoes—either creamy mash or mini new boiled potatoes.

Enjoy!

One thing I’ve learned from five years of freelancing: While there’s no real reason to wear a bra when I’m WFH (or, well, ever), I feel like I can get more done if I put something structured on. Cameron Diaz Gave a Rare Glimpse Into Her Home Life With Benji Madden and Their Daughter

Cameron Diaz is one of the most notoriously private celebrities—and that was true even before she and her husband, Benji Madden, announced the arrival of their daughter, Raddix Chloe Wildflower Madden, in early January.

But she recently popped onto Instagram Live with her friend, Who What Wear‘s Katherine Power, to talk about life as a new mom during quarantine. “I’ve kinda been living a quarantine life anyhow because I have a three-month-old, three-and-a-half month. So my life has been completely quiet and still for the last few months,” Diaz said, per Entertainment Tonight. “But I was able to have my friends over all the time. And now I just don’t see anybody.”

Nowadays, her routine sounds pretty relatable. “I’m either cooking, cleaning or taking care of my baby—and usually all at the same time,” Diaz said. “I have to cook at night. I know people hate cooking… I drink [wine] every night it’s my wind down for the day. After we do bath time with our baby and we put her to sleep, Benji puts her to bed, he’s so good. He’s such an amazing father. I’m so lucky he’s my baby’s father. He’s incredible. He puts her down and I go into the kitchen and I pour myself a nice glass of red wine. I start my cooking, I put on my show, whatever it is.”

While she may not be able to see other people right now or take Raddix out and about, Diaz isn’t complaining at all about motherhood. “I love being a mother. It’s the best, best, best part of my life,” she said. “I’m so grateful and so happy and it’s the best thing ever and I’m so lucky to do it with Benj and we’re having the best time. I’m thrilled. I can’t believe it.”

Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden surprised the world in early January with the news of their daughter’s birth. “Happy New Year from the Maddens,” they wrote in an Instagram post. “We are so happy, blessed, and grateful to begin this new decade by announcing the birth of our daughter, Raddix Madden. She has instantly captured our hearts and completed our family. While we are overjoyed to share this news, we also feel a strong instinct to protect our little one’s privacy. So we won’t be posting pictures or sharing any more details, other than the fact that she is really really cute. Some would even say RAD.”
