Jenna Dewan's New Netflix Series Soundtrack Is So Good She Signed on Without Reading a Script

It’s been a busy year for Jenna Dewan. She celebrated her first anniversary with boyfriend Steve Kazee, announced her pregnancy, and released a personal memoir, Gracefully You. On screen, Dewan starred in romantic dramedies The Wedding Year and Berlin, I Love You, served as a mentor on NBC’s World of Dance, and guest starred on The Resident.

As if those weren’t time-consuming enough, now she’s about to star in one of her most ambitious and creative projects to date: Soundtrack, a modern day musical that combines Dewan’s love of dance, acting, and song. It premieres on Wednesday, December 18 on Netflix.

“I’ve done dance numbers on stage, in movies, and on different shows,” Dewan tells Glamour, “but I’ve never done it within an acting scene, where the song was going to portray the emotions of the character in the moment.” So when creator Josh Safran told her about his idea—a show that includes musical numbers, dramatic moments, and intersecting love stories set in Los Angeles—she knew she wanted to be a part of it. “I didn’t even need to see a script.”

It was welcome news to Safran, who wrote the role with Dewan in mind. After a general meeting with her, Safran say, he knew she was a fit. “I fell in love with her and was like, ‘Done. That’s it,'” he explains. For Dewan, the feeling was mutual: “I signed on strictly because I love Josh and the idea.”

Here, Dewan talks about Soundtrack, making out with herself on the show (yes, you read that right), and more.

Jenna Dewan Responds to Rumors She Shaded Camila Cabello at the 2019 American Music Awards

Jenna Dewan appeared to have a great time at the 2019 American Music Awards Sunday night (November 24), rocking out in the crowd to the performances alongside her stylist and friend, Brad Goreski. But one moment caught on camera had some viewers wondering if she was mocking Camila Cabello.

It all went down while Cabello and her boyfriend, Shawn Mendes, were on stage performing their hit song “Senorita.” A clip started circulating on Twitter where people thought Dewan said to Goreski, “She’s always extra” while rolling her eyes, appearing to reference Cabello. Though others seemed to think Dewan said, “She always sounds good.”

There was enough buzz around the matter that Dewan felt she needed to address it on her Instagram Stories during her car ride home. “I’m getting a lot of text messages from people wondering if I was shading Camila. No! I love her. I love her so much. I’m such a big fan of hers,” Dewan, 38, explained in the video. “I don’t understand what that’s about but no, I love her, love her, love her.”

“Guys, we were bumping and grinding so hard to ’Señorita.’ We’re obsessed,” Goreski said. Dewan continued, “That’s my favorite song! Anyways, clearing that up. Thank you AMAs. That was so much fun.”

She also tagged Cabello and Mendes in the post, writing, “We love @camila_cabello @shandmendes.”

“I love this award show. I come every time I’m invited,” Jenna Dewan said earlier in the night on the red carpet, per People. “I’m so excited. Selena, I’m very excited about. Dua Lipa, I’m thrilled about.” She even shared a clip of Cabello’s performance earlier in the night.

So there you have it. There’s really no drama here. If only all internet drama could be squashed so quickly and efficiently. For what it’s worth, it seems that Mendes and Cabello had a great time last night, too. “Thank you everyone thank you so much!! ❤️ also @camila_cabello. i admire you so much you unbelievable human being thank you for being you ❤️❤️ we love u guys @AMAs,” Mendes tweeted.

Here's Why Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum Chose to Divorce

In her new book, Gracefully You: How to Live Your Best Life Every Day, Jenna Dewan reveals the reasons she and Channing Tatum decided to split up in April 2018.

“I’d come to realize the dynamic I was in wasn’t serving me nor was it serving my daughter,” the actor-dancer writes, according to People. “First and foremost I had to accept the realization this isn’t working and had moved into hurting.”

In the book Dewan says she and Tatum decided to call it quits the night before she started filming World of Dance season two. They were able to keep news of the split hush-hush during most of production.

“The public saw Channing and I in this idealized romanticized light,” Dewan also writes in her book. “This made things difficult for me because I like being as honest and real as I can.”

Earlier this month Dewan told People that she was “gutted” by her marriage to Tatum ending. “It was so difficult for me,” she said. “It was the loss of an idealistic future for myself and my life. What does that now look like for me? Where do I begin? I met him when I was 24. I didn’t know life without Chan.

“It was a hard journey of growth and change,” she continued. “Ultimately, now I can honestly say that I’m living in a very joyful new place in my life, and I’m happy about it.”

That joyful new place in her life includes a relationship with Broadway actor Steve Kazee and a baby on the way. Dewan confirmed she and Kazee were expecting on September 24 via Instagram. “Becoming a mother is quite simply the absolute best most incredible thing that has ever happened to me,” she wrote. “@stevekazee you are a gift from above and i couldn’t be more excited to be expanding our family together…! Thank you guys for all the love!!” See the post for yourself, above.

Jenna Dewan’s book, Gracefully You: How to Live Your Best Life Every Day, is now available.

Jenna Dewan Just Got Super Candid About Her Divorce From Channing Tatum

Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum first announced their split back in April 2018, and officially filed for divorce last October. Since then, they’ve both moved on to new relationships—her with Steve Kazee and him with singer Jessie J. They’ve remained pretty quiet about the breakup as they continue co-parent their daughter, Everly.

In a new interview with People, ahead of the publication of her wellness book Gracefully You: How to Live Your Best Life Every Day, she opens up about this new phase in her life—which includes a baby on the way for her and Kazee. “I always say no one gets married to hopefully get divorced,” Dewan says.

The actor says she really struggled when her and Tatum first separated: “I was just gutted. It was so difficult for me. It was the loss of an idealistic future for myself and my life. What does that now look like for me? Where do I begin? I met him when I was 24, I didn’t know life without Chan.”

“It was a hard journey of growth and change,” Dewan continues. “Ultimately now I can honestly say that I’m living in a very joyful new place in my life, and I’m happy about it.”

“You would never expect your life to take a turn the way it does,” she says of where she is now. “But embracing it and starting fresh and figuring out what you want in life and what means a lot to you and what’s meaningful, what is going to make you happy. I’m grateful that I now am at a place where I understand myself and what I want and I’m happy about this new chapter. I’m in a place of joy.”

Dewan says that everyone is still adjusting, but that she and Tatum are focused on their daughter. “We’re all aware that it’s a new normal, we’re all getting used to it,” she reveals. “You can still have a relationship and just because the forms change as to who you are to each other, it doesn’t take away from the love that we had or that we shared all those years.”

Jenna Dewan’s book, Gracefully You: How to Live Your Best Life Every Day, drops on October 22.

Jenna Dewan Is Expecting Her First Child With Boyfriend Steve Kazee

Jenna Dewan is pregnant, People magazine confirmed on Tuesday, September 24. The actress is expecting her first child with Broadway actor Steve Kazee, who she’s reportedly been dating for a little over a year. This will be her second child, as she shares a 6-year-old daughter, Everly, with her ex-husband, Channing Tatum.

Dewan and Kazee have kept their relationship pretty low-key, though a source does tell People that the Step Up dancer is “very happy.” Around Valentine’s Day, Kazee posted a sweet note about Dewan to his Instagram. “Somehow, inexplicably, I’ve been granted the honor to have this be the person that I get to be side by side with throughout this wild journey we call life,” he wrote. “Jenna I don’t know what I did to deserve your love but I will always be so thankful that our lives found their way to each other. Here’s looking at you, kid. Happy Valentine’s Day, my love.”

Dewan has posted a few pics of the couple to her feed, too, like this sweet shot from August.

And this one from a vacation:

No other details about the pregnancy are available at this time. Neither Jenna Dewan nor Steve Kazee has posted about it—yet.

Dewan and Channing Tatum’s breakup was one of the biggest news stories of 2018. In July 2018, she opened up to Women’s Health about the difficulties of going through something so private in the public eye. “It’s always challenging to go through a big change and have the whole world have an opinion about it,” she said. “…It’s been a journey, and it’s been a transformation of myself—my needs and wants as a woman. I think everyone wants to hold on to what’s in front of them, but when you open your mind, saying, ‘I want what’s best for myself and my daughter,’ you have to be OK with however that looks.”

If Jenna Bush Hager Recommends It, America Will Read It

Jenna Bush Hager grew up in a house of bookworms. Her mother, First Lady Laura Bush, was a former librarian who read her twin daughters Little House on the Prairie. Her father, President George W. Bush, had a large anthology of Canadian fairytales that he’d read selections of to his girls. From childhood on, a love of reading was ingrained in her life. During adolescence Hager obsessed over The Baby-Sitters Club, and later on The Bluest Eye. Then by the time she reached adulthood, she became the de facto person in all of her friends and family’s lives to go to for a book suggestion.

“Yesterday my sister [Barbara], who’s out of town called and was like, ‘What should I read now?’ I’m always recommending books to friends, and I’m always asking for recommendations,” Hager tells Glamour. Which is why when Hager was named cohost of Today with Hoda & Jenna, she decided to launch a monthly book club, called Read With Jenna. As she puts it, “[Recommending books] is something I do in my day-to-day life, and I just gave it a little bit of a larger platform on the show.”

When Hager modestly made her first selection back in March, Tara Conklin’s The Last Romantics, the book jumped up to number 6 on the New York Times best-seller list (despite the fact that it hadn’t made the list the week before). Then lightening struck twice. Her next featured read, The Unwinding of the Miracle by Julie Yip-Williams instantly became a bestseller, and it became clear that Hager had something really powerful on her hands. Since, all of her subsequent recs—A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum and Searching for Sylvie Lee by Jean Kwok—have also hit the list. Though her July pick, Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes was only announced on Tuesday, it’s already the bestselling book on Amazon.

While Hager is immensely proud of the fact that all of her selections have had such success—especially since she makes it a point to frequently feature first time and little-known authors— its in the community of Read With Jenna followers that she really feels its impact. “Yesterday a woman wrote on my Instagram, ‘I really wish I could afford this, but between bills and this and that, I can’t afford this book.’ Ten people wrote in and said, ‘Send me your address, and I’ll send you a book,'” Hager says. “That’s the power of really creating a place where people can come together to read, and also start a really great conversation. We created a Read With Jenna Facebook page, but readers have also created their own group called, ‘Finished Reading Jenna’s Book Club,’ so there are no spoilers. The momentum is crazy and I love that the members of the group are creating their own [spaces], which is what would happen in a normal book club.”

Hager isn’t the only celebrity who shares their passion for books with their fans. Sarah Jessica Parker, Emma Watson, Reese Witherspoon, and more regularly post what they’re reading on social media. But it’s Hager who has been dubbed the heir apparent to Oprah, whose stamp of approval catapulted authors like Cormac McCarthy, James Frey, and Janet Fitch to fame. Hager credits the book club’s meteoric rise to, “the platform of Today. We know that the people watching our show trust us, and they are part of our lives. This isn’t the first time I’ve done segments about authors or books. Since I started, really ten years ago, I’ve discussed books. So I think they trust me, and like what I’m choosing.” She’s also quick to point to Reese Witherspoon’s club as an inspiration. “I admire what Reese does for uplifting female authors. Nobody does more for publishing, because she buys these books and [turns them into] incredible television shows and movies. I think she’s done it right because she loves to read, it’s authentic. And I think anybody who has ever watched Today knows I love to read, which I think is the secret to the success.”

If one thing becomes crystal clear when talking to Hager, it’s that she really, truly loves nothing more than a good book. She recently read her daughter, Mila, the entire Junie B. Jones series. At night her husband has to ask her to turn down the light on her iPad as she stays up late pouring over novels. Though she reads six to seven books in full per month, there are countless titles she read portions of—before realizing that they’re not the right fit for the club—that she’s dying to get back to. And when you ask Hager for her favorite summer reads, she lights up at the opportunity to recommend some of her most coveted.

Read on for Hager’s exclusive summer picks, and follow along at Read With Jenna to see which book she’ll spotlight next.
