Ryan Murphy's 'Pose' Makes History With Largest Cast of Transgender Actors Ever

Ryan Murphy‘s newest series, Pose, is making TV history by featuring the largest cast of transgender actors ever to appear on a television show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pilot of the show will feature “five transgender actors in series regular roles,” all of whom will be playing transgender characters on-screen. Pose is set in New York City in 1986, and according to THR, follows its characters through the city’s various different social scenes, including the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene, and the ball culture world.

The American Horror Story producer and his team set out on a six-month nationwide search to find his cast, and selected actors Indya Moore as Angel, The Carrie Diaries’ MJ Rodriguez as Blanca, model Dominique Jackson as Elektra, and Transparent alums Hallie Sahar as Lulu and Angelica Ross as Candy.

“We are thrilled that Pose pushes the narrative forward by centering on the unique and under-told experiences of trans women and gay people of color,” says the show’s writer, Steven Canals. “Ryan has assembled a strong team of storytellers and innovators to collaborate on telling this important narrative. As a Bronx-bred queer writer of color, I’m honored to aid in ushering this groundbreaking show into homes.”

In addition to featuring transgender actors on-screen, Pose has plenty of trans voices behind the scenes, too. Canals is reportedly writing scripts in conjunction with Transparent‘s Our Lady J, as well as working with transgender rights activist and New York Times best-selling author Janet Mock. Murphy also plans to bring on emerging transgender directors through his “Directing Mentorship Program,” a diversity initiative that pairs budding talent with mentors from the industry.

Considering transgender roles have historically been given to cisgender actors, this is a huge deal. As the video short #Proud2Be points out, this tradition not only denies trans actors opportunities and advancement, but it also reinforces harmful stereotypes and contributes to real-world violence against the trans community. Murphy famously cast two cis actors to play trans characters on Glee (and was met with some pretty harsh criticism), so his decision to keep things authentic seems to be a step in the right direction.

Beyoncé Was Almost Cast in the Live-Action 'Beauty and the Beast'

PHOTO: Brooks Kraft/Getty Images

Would the world have been able to handle Beauty and the Beast and The Beyoncé? Because that could have been a reality. Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon wanted Bey for the role of Plumette the feather duster in his live-action remake of the 1991 Disney classic. Unfortunately, “it wasn’t a big enough part,” he told Yahoo! Movies. The part of Plumette eventually went to Gugu Mbatha-Raw. And ever-gracious Beyoncé, along with Blue Ivy and Jay-Z, still supported the film by attending the L.A. premiere together.

Beyoncé and Condon had previously worked together on 2006’s Dreamgirls, one of only two musicals Beyoncé has done (the other being Carmen: A Hip Hopera). She’s also appeared in comedy films like The Pink Panther and Austin Powers: Goldmember. With her busy schedule and multitude of projects, it makes sense that Beyoncé would rather focus on the big parts than take a supporting role, but we have to point out that she did voice Queen Tara in 2013’s Epic, which, as far as we can tell, isn’t a lead. Her most recent on-screen role (besides music videos) was Sharon in Obsessed in 2009.

This isn’t the only time Beyoncé turned down voice work with Disney. She was considered for the part of Tiana, the protagonist of The Princess and the Frog—and the first Black Disney Princess—but lost the role to her Dreamgirls costar Anika Noni Rose after not wanting to audition.

Clamoring to audition for Disney, on the other hand, was Idris Elba, who revealed in September that he’d sent in a tape of himself singing in a bid to play Gaston. Elba, who has a musical theater background, “called and said, ‘I want in!'” but speculated that the casting department thought he was “too old.” The part eventually went to 38-year-old Luke Evans, instead of 45-year-old Elba. But there was no bad blood. “I love you, Luke, you know that,” said Elba.

Condon, too, remains a fan of Beyoncé’s, remarking to Yahoo! Movies that her visual album Lemonade may be the future of the movie musical. And even without Beyoncé’s talents, Beauty and the Beast made more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. As Knowles herself said, “Always stay gracious, best revenge is your papers.”

A 'Riverdale' Cast Member Just Said He 'Really Likes Cole and Lili Together'

Riverdale returning last week reminded the world of two things: 1) Betty and Jughead are the cutest, and 2) They’d be even cuter if their IRL counterparts, Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse, were also dating off-screen. That latter question has been floating around the Riverdale universe for nearly a year. People are convinced Reinhart and Sprouse are an item, even though neither has confirmed it.

The proof is out there, though. For one, there’s the time they were caught holding hands at San Diego Comic-Con—and then they did it again on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. Toss in a few sweet social media posts and this maybe-snuggle on The Tonight Show, and you have a celebrity relationship mystery for the ages.

And the plot just thickened thanks to Skeet Ulrich, who plays Jughead’s dad (F.P. Jones) on Riverdale. In a new interview with Access Hollywood, the actor accidentally let it slip that he “likes” Reinhart and Sprouse “together.”

When asked who his favorite Riverdale on-screen ships are, Ulrich said, “I really like Cole and Lili together—Betty and Jughead—I think there’s a lot of positive qualities about them together for sure.” Watch his interview for yourself, below:

Granted, Ulrich is most likely talking about Rienhart and Sprouse in the context of the show; that is, after all, what he was asked. But the fact he felt the need to clarify his statement by saying “Betty and Jughead” is suspicious. It’s almost as if he feared people would think he was talking about Reinhart and Sprouse off-screen if he didn’t say the characters’ names. And if that thought did cross his mind, isn’t this a sign something might be going on between C and L?

This Reinhart-Sprouse Instagram fan page certainly thinks so. The account’s runner posted Ulrich’s interview on Tuesday and captioned it, “Skeet nearly exposed himself for shipping both Sprousehart and Bughead.”

Of course, Reinhart and Sprouse never have to confirm their relationship—or lack thereof—to anyone; their personal life is completely their business. Riverdale fans have just as much fun (playfully) obsessing over interviews like this as they do fan theories.

The 'This Is Us' Cast Played 'Never Have I Ever,' and It Got Weird

PHOTO: TheEllenShow/Youtube

Every Tuesday night, This is Us makes us laugh, cry, and say “aw.” And apparently the same goes when the cast reunites IRL. The latest adorable Pearson family moment comes to us by way of Ellen DeGeneres’s Youtube show, “Ellen’s Show Me More Show,” where Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, and Sterling K. Brown played “Never Have I Ever.”

The two actors—who play father and son, Jack and Randall Pearson—immediately showed their TV wife and mom love with the first question, “Have you ever jammed out to a Mandy Moore song?” Turns out, the only person of the trio to say never was Mandy herself. While Milo and Sterling weren’t fully buying it, the thought of the two men listening to “Candy is honestly a beautiful visual.

Things get progressively more racy when the actors are asked if they ever had a sex dream about a co-star, to which Ventimiglia responds, “What job we talkin’ about?” (Ironically, he has an affinity for dating his on-screen love interests, including Hayden Panettiere and Alexis Bledel.) Brown takes it one step further, insinuating that he’s had “special” dreams about Moore, nuzzling in her in the ear and saying, “Oh mommy.” OK, one step too far, Sterling.

But because it’s the This Is Us cast, they had to end on an incredibly sappy note. As they all declare “never have I ever felt as close to cast mates as I have on this show,” both men kiss Moore on the cheek, as she says, “This is the best job I’ve ever had and that’s thanks in large part to you guys.” Is Dan Fogelman scripting their real life interactions now too?

The 'Mean Girls' Cast Reunited to Raise Money for Las Vegas Shooting Victims

PHOTO: Paramount/Everett Collection

On October 3, a.k.a. Mean Girls Day, the movie’s cast have come together to raise money for the victims of Sunday’s deadly shooting in Las Vegas. In a video shared by the iconic 2004 film’s stars on social media on Tuesday, they set a goal of raising $300,000 for the National Compassion Fund.

In the video, which was posted to Twitter by Jonathan Bennett, he, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, and Daniel Franzese take turns calling their fans to action. “We know today is a special day, and that’s because of fans like you. It’s October 3rd,” they say. “This year, though, we’re doing things a little differently. We want to turn the attention to those who need it. After Sunday night’s tragic events in Las Vegas, let’s give back. In honor of Mean Girls Day, we’re asking each of you, the groolest fans out there, to help. We’ve started a GoFundMe page, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the National Compassion Fund. If every fan gave just $3 in honor of October 3rd, just $3, we would hit our goal of $300,000 in no time.”

They add, “Guys, look. We know ‘fetch’ is never gonna happen, but we can make this happen. On October 3rd, I’ll ask you what day it is, but we’ll also ask you to help. So, you go, Glen Coco, to GoFundMe.com/October3. Thank you for being a fan and thank you for your help.” In the three hours since Jonathan posted the video online, the campaign has already raised more than $9,000.

According to the GoFundMe page, the National Compassion Fund is sponsored by the National Center for Victims of Crime, and previously helped raise money for victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, the Aurora movie theater shooting in 2012, and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The NCF website promises that “100% of the funds received through the National Compassion Fund Las Vegas will be distributed directly to victims,” and that donations will provide “critical support to the victims and their families” in both the short- and long-term. Fetch, indeed.

On Instagram, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show veteran went deep about what the experience of going through the preparation and casting has taught her. “It takes a while to understand what a great key failure is,” she wrote. “And once you get that, everything becomes more beautiful in any area of your life. I have a LONG way of learning! But I just wanted this process to be part of who I really am, so I set that goal. I worked not only my body but my mind to live the previous days and the casting day itself with a different perspective. Had up and downs on nerve wrecking (of course), but I allowed myself to feel the real excitement it brings and a lot less insecurities. It wasn’t that easy cause I’m emotional and when you walk in there your whole perfect plan kind of falls apart! I remember my legs shaking while walking in my first VS casting. But I wanted to leave that room knowing that I gave all I could and I would be able to find peace within any answer. And I left it with tears in my eyes but of joy! What a great experience. I wanted this YES, but I worked for it and I am proud of myself, for getting it AND for how I went through it. Why are we so scared to be proud of ourselves? CELEBRATE YOURSELF. Celebrate your progress. All I want to say with this is try to turn your failures around because they’re only teaching us, work on your self love and DO NOT GIVE UP. Nowadays we managed to made it a hard job to LOVE ourselves but don’t stop working on it. Authenticity is something that will never stop shining. And whoever this reaches, here’s a message for you that I truly believe: you’re incredibly valuable, you have so much to give to yourself and others. Every single one of us. Do not give up. Realize your power. I take this with me forever so Thank You @victoriassecret @10magazine @ed_razek @monica.mitro @johndavidpfeiffer ❤️for the opportunity to go through it again and for the 2 past ones, and being able to learn along the way, and THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! for the incredible experience that is coming our way! I CAN OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE THAT I AM WALKING THE VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION SHOW AGAIN. DON’T KNOW HOW TO EXPRESS HOW GRATEFUL I AM. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️?❤️? also big thank you to everyone involved in my progress and life.. you know who you are, I feel incredibly lucky.
