'A Star Is Born' Almost Starred Jennifer Lopez and Will Smith

A Star Is Born has been met with nonstop acclaim ever since its debut, which isn’t so surprising given that Lady Gaga is front and center of the project. Not only did she give the performance of a lifetime as pop singer Ally, but she basically caused a rupture in the space-time continuum with her showstopping red-carpet outfits during the press tour.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role, but that could have been the case: In a recent interview, Jennifer Lopez shared that she had been in early talks to develop a Star Is Born script with Will Smith.

Speaking to Extra, Lopez addressed rumors that she and Smith had been attached to the film before Bradley Cooper came in to direct and star in the remake. “Oh yeah, Will and I talked about it and talked about developing the script,” the singer-actress-producer-icon said. “It just never took off. Projects are like that.”

Lopez and Smith reportedly dropped out of talks around 2013. At some point, Clint Eastwood was also looking into the project and had tapped Beyoncé and Leonardo DiCaprio about lead roles. That didn’t work out either, of course. Eventually Cooper was brought on, and he turned to Lady Gaga in a room full of 100 people, and…well, you know the rest.

Cooper and Gaga’s version of the film is the third remake of the 1937 original; subsequent versions have starred Judy Garland and, later, Barbra Streisand. Gaga was nominated for a Grammy and a Golden Globe earlier this month, and she’s considered a top contender for an Oscar this year.

Lopez says that even though the film didn’t work out on her end, she’s happy with how it’s all turned out.

“I’m really proud of Bradley, one for directing his first film…we’re friends, and watching Gaga kind of do her thing in the movie, it’s just great,” she said. “It’s perfect, just like this movie, everything happens in its own divine timing.”

Still, we can’t but wonder what the J.Lo version of Ally would have been like. Would there have been dance routines? Green Versace dresses? I guess we’ll never know.

Lady Gaga Just Dropped a Music Video From 'A Star Is Born'

By now, A Star Is Born has pretty much exploded across the country like the cinematic supernova it is. But if you still haven’t been able to get enough of the film, Lady Gaga has you covered. Yesterday, she tweeted out the first music video from the movie—and no, it’s not for “Shallow,” as you might expect. Instead, it’s for “I’ll Never Love Again,” the epic ballad that closes out the final scenes of the movie.

According to Variety, the team behind the movie’s soundtrack waited to release many of the songs until fans got to fully experience them in theaters. Now that “A Star Is Born” is out and devastating audiences everywhere, it’s time.

It all starts with a short clip from the movie, which sees Gaga’s character Ally asking her musician boyfriend Jackson Maine (played by the film’s director Bradley Cooper) about the lyrics that eventually become “I’ll Never Love Again.” “You hiding love songs?” she asks. Things take off from there.

And the emotional pull isn’t just that the song captures the film’s climactic ending (we’re not going to spoil it): As many outlets have reported, “I’ll Never Love Again” was an incredibly intense experience for Gaga on a personal level.

The day that she had to shoot the scene in which Ally sings I’ll Never Love Again” at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Gaga found out her close friend had passed away after a battle with stage 4 breast, brain, and lung cancer.

“My very, very, very dear friend Sonja died of cancer that day,” Gaga told Entertainment Weekly. “We were supposed to shoot in, like, 30 minutes, and I left the set because her husband called me and I could hear her in the background and I just got in the car and drove… I missed her by 15 minutes and she died. I literally laid with her, with her husband, and their dog, and his son. When I came back, Bradley was so gentle with me and we got through it. I performed the song. He was like, ‘You don’t have to do it again. It’s okay.’”

You can watch the full video on Apple Music.

Netflix's New Series 'Westside' Is Basically the Reality TV Version of 'A Star Is Born'

Netflix is debuting a new reality TV show next month, and it’s basically the IRL version of A Star Is Born. On Thursday (October 11), the streaming giant dropped the trailer for this new show, which is called Westside and follows nine aspiring singer-songwriters as they attempt to pursue their dreams of stardom.

In the clip, the celebrity hopefuls alternate between belting their hearts out, butting heads over their competing egos, and casually dropping one-liners like, “We’re going to mine our lives for the truths we want to share.” Yup. It goes deep!

You may recognize some of the faces of Westside. According to Entertainment Weekly, the cast includes Pia Toscano, who appeared on the 10th season of American Idol and placed ninth, as well as Taz Zavala, Arika Gluck, James Byous, Caitlin Ary, Leo Gallo, Alexandra Kay, Austin Kolbe, and Sean Patrick Murray, all of whom have already released a few songs on their own, to minor success. On the show, they’ll put out at least 18 songs, per EW, likely a mix of solo singles and group collabs.

Watch the trailer for yourself, below:

Westside starts streaming on Netflix November 9. If you’re already hungry for more of this Glee meets The Hills goodness, you can stream one of the songs featured in the trailer, “We Are the Ones,” right now.

This isn’t the only music-inspired movie or TV show premiering this year. You also have Bohemian Rhapsody, the Freddy Mercury biopic, to look forward to in November, as well as Vox Lux, the explosive indie movie coming out in December where Natalie Portman plays a Gaga-esque pop star.

The True Story Behind the Final Scene of 'A Star Is Born' Will Make You Cry All Over Again

Warning: Spoilers for A Star Is Born ahead!

The final scene in A Star Is Born—in which Lady Gaga sings the powerful ballad “I’ll Never Love Again”—is more than enough to have anyone sobbing into their popcorn. But in case the movie didn’t leave you gutted enough, the real-life tragedy that occurred in Gaga’s life the same day she filmed the heartbreaking scene will have you crying all over again.

In a new interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Gaga revealed that while she was on set getting ready to shoot, she received news that one of her closest friends, Sonja Durham, was nearing the end of her battle with stage IV cancer. “On that day my friend Sonja—who had been battling cancer for years—her friend called me and I could hear her moaning in the background and she said she’s not doing well,” Gaga said. “And I thought she was dying, so I left the set.”

The pop star says she didn’t even tell costar and director Bradley Cooper that she had left. “I just got in my car and started driving and I missed her by 10 minutes,” she said.

Gaga shared that she laid with Sonja’s son and husband, and consulted her friend’s widower about whether she should return to set. “He said, ‘You’ve gotta do what Sonja would want you to do,'” Gaga recalled. “She gave me a tragic gift that day and I took it with me to set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same day within an hour.”

When she returned to set, she said, Cooper was kind and supportive in the wake of her loss. “Bradley was so beautiful with me that day, he was so loving. He was like, ‘You don’t have to do it too many times, it’s OK.’ And, I was like, ‘All I wanna do is sing, man,'” she said.

And so Gaga stepped in front of the camera and sang lyrics that had suddenly become even more poignant than they already are in the context of the film. “Wish I could, I could have said goodbye / I would have said what I wanted to, maybe even cried for you / If I knew it would be the last time / I would have broke my heart in two / Tryin’ to save a part of you,” she sings, per Genius.

In the interview, Gaga continued, “Life is hard, man, but we’ve gotta stick together. What’s more important than any of this, the fame, the accolades? What’s important is the process of love and kindness. I think the star of this film is human courage, bravery.”

'A Star Is Born' Merch Is Here, and Goodbye Money

If you flocked to the movie theaters to watch A Star Is Born this weekend—or, heck, just watched the trailers on loop hundreds of times—and found yourself craving a little merch to show your fandom, you’re not alone. Maybe we should be content with the just-dropped full soundtrack, which people went crazy for, but, well, we still wanted more. Twitter has been asking for merch for a while now. As Doreen St. Félix over at The New Yorker tweeted exactly a month ago, “it seems like if ever a film should have merch, a star is born is it.”

Well, St. Félix—and the rest of us—got a huge present this weekend from Lady Gaga herself: She tweeted on Sunday that merch was in stock on the movie’s website. And, yep, you might as well kiss whatever’s left of your paycheck goodbye.

For the dangerously justifiable price of $35, you can get your choice of an Ally T-shirt (cream) or Jackson T-shirt (black) plus a digital copy of the A Star Is Born soundtrack (unless you live outside of the U.S., where said download will not work). Both the Ally and Jackson T-shirts come in small to 2X.

Ready for a glimpse?

Unfortunately, the wait time on the tees is four to five weeks, so it’ll be a hot moment before they arrive. In the meantime, though you can busy yourself by heading back to the theaters to take in this greatness a couple more times, or read this excellent piece by my colleague Chris Rosa about how the movie is challenging toxic male egos, which somehow seems incredibly timely.

Every Showstopping Outfit Lady Gaga's Worn While Promoting 'A Star Is Born'

Like many others on the Internet, I can’t stop thinking about Lady Gaga and her new movie, A Star Is Born. When I wake up in the morning, my first thought is to check how it’s doing on Rotten Tomatoes. (It’s at 96 percent, BTW.) My second thought is to see what the last entry is in Gaga’s slay-worthy press tour wardrobe. “Oscar season” hasn’t even officially started. I’m not sure I’ll make it until February.

Mother Monster’s currently on a worldwide tour promoting A Star Is Born,, and her outfits—no surprise—have been stunning. The pale pink Valentino Haute Couture gown she wore in Venice, even as it started to rain on the red carpet; the veiled Armani Privé moment that made for a dramatic reveal in front of photographers in Toronto; the Jonathan Simkhai body-con dress she wore to make an entrance riding on the side of a boat: Gaga is giving us old Hollywood glam with a dash of pop flair in every country. And the result? Hyperventilation. Tears. Spontaneous sweating. Gaga’s red-carpet outfits will end my life, I know it. (Which is a shame, because I really wanted to see A Star Is Born.)

Don’t understand why I’m freaking out? Allow these lewks to do the talking.
