There's a Typo in Taylor Swift's New Merch, and Fans Can't Decide What It Means

If there’s one thing Taylor Swift loves, it’s an Easter egg. So when fans noticed that a new limited-edition shirt from the singer’s merch line had a typo, they had a field day. Was it an honest mistake…or a clue about her forthcoming album?

The just-released shirts appear to have a misplaced apostrophe that makes the text read, “Your’e the only one of you.” Now, you may remember how, in her latest song, “Me!,” Swift happily exclaims, “Spelling is fun!” Now, technically, this is an issue with punctuation, not spelling. Still: Could this possibly be a callback to the single? Or did the merch just skip the copyedit stage?

A fan caught the error and alerted Twitter, writing in a tweet: “EXCUSE ME! I’ve had this shirt for nearly a month and you’re telling me it’s had a typo THIS WHOLE TIME!!”

But there’s a twist: Not every shirt features the misplaced apostrophe on it, according to BuzzFeed, bolstering the hypothesis that there might be a reason for the grammar snafu.

Still, the fans ran with it.

For most people, the whole”you’re”/”your’e” thing was more funny than anything. (“So much for ‘Spelling is fun,’ am I right?” one person tweeted.) But lots of dedicated Swifities latched onto the idea that the typo’s actually meant as an Easter egg and began putting forth ideas about what the shirt could mean.

“Your’e’ on @taylorswift13 ‘s merch is because it closely resembles ‘Urie’ to reference @brendonurie??? #ConspiracyTime,” one fan guessed.

It wouldn’t be a total surprise if it was indeed an Easter egg. As Swift revealed when she appeared on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, she really likes leaving fans a trail of bread crumbs that offer insights about her music projects. And we’ll admit she’s gotten really, really good at them as well: She basically turned the entire EW cover into a secret puzzle by wearing a jacket with dozens of buttons on it that each provided some kind of hint about her upcoming seventh album (our eyes still hurt from trying to figure all of them out). She’s planted so many other clues recently that fans have come up with a seemingly endless list of theories about her latest release.

“I love that they like the cryptic hint dropping,” she said. “Because as long as they like it, I’ll keep doing it. It’s fun. It feels mischievous and playful.” We’ll just have to see if this is another example of her being playful or just a very public “whoops” moment.

'A Star Is Born' Merch Is Here, and Goodbye Money

If you flocked to the movie theaters to watch A Star Is Born this weekend—or, heck, just watched the trailers on loop hundreds of times—and found yourself craving a little merch to show your fandom, you’re not alone. Maybe we should be content with the just-dropped full soundtrack, which people went crazy for, but, well, we still wanted more. Twitter has been asking for merch for a while now. As Doreen St. Félix over at The New Yorker tweeted exactly a month ago, “it seems like if ever a film should have merch, a star is born is it.”

Well, St. Félix—and the rest of us—got a huge present this weekend from Lady Gaga herself: She tweeted on Sunday that merch was in stock on the movie’s website. And, yep, you might as well kiss whatever’s left of your paycheck goodbye.

For the dangerously justifiable price of $35, you can get your choice of an Ally T-shirt (cream) or Jackson T-shirt (black) plus a digital copy of the A Star Is Born soundtrack (unless you live outside of the U.S., where said download will not work). Both the Ally and Jackson T-shirts come in small to 2X.

Ready for a glimpse?

Unfortunately, the wait time on the tees is four to five weeks, so it’ll be a hot moment before they arrive. In the meantime, though you can busy yourself by heading back to the theaters to take in this greatness a couple more times, or read this excellent piece by my colleague Chris Rosa about how the movie is challenging toxic male egos, which somehow seems incredibly timely.

Cynthia Nixon Releases *Sex and the City*-Themed Campaign Merch

The Sex and the City premiere turns 20 on Wednesday. And the real-life Miranda Hobbes, New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon, has found quite the appropriate way to commemorate the occasion: by launching campaign merchandise inspired by the HBO show.

“Are you a Miranda voting for Cynthia? In honor of #SATC20, here’s a line of Miranda merchandise designed by the team behind the ‘Every Outfit on Sex and the City’ Instagram account… because, well, we should all be Mirandas who vote for Cynthia,” Nixon tweeted on Tuesday. Such a Miranda move.

The collection features hats, T-shirts, tote bags, and more featuring variations on the motto, “I’m a Miranda and I’m voting for Cynthia.” (The toddler merch reads, “I’m a Miranda Future Governor of New York”; a baseball cap says, “I’m a Miranda Governor.”) Now, you can’t help but wonder: What about those of us who are more of a Carrie who’s voting for Cynthia, or a Samantha or, god forbid, Charlotte? A bit of a missed opportunity… but, that’s beside the point.

This isn’t the first time Nixon has proven she’s a master at branding. Her official campaign store also sells a tee styled after the “unqualified lesbian” jab from former mayoral candidate Christine Quinn, as well as another inspired by her vocal critiques of incumbent governor Andrew Cuomo’s handling of the New York City subway system.

While we’re still waiting for the t-shirts that read “I drink coffee, have sex, buy pies, and enjoy battery-operated devices,” these will suffice. Hey, they’ll pair white well with our overalls and puffer coats.

The special anniversary-edition Cynthia for New York T-shirts are $35 each, while the tote goes for $30; a cap will set you back $38.

It Was Only a Matter of Time Before Melania Trump Got FLOTUS Merch

Hot off the heels (sorry) of a controversial travel get-up, Melania Trump landed in Houston this afternoon—and though she ditched the Manolo Blahnik stilettos on Air Force 1, FLOTUS was spotted wearing another item that had the Internet scratching its head.

The Trumps are in Texas to visit those affected by Hurricane Harvey—though, so far, the purpose for their trip has been eclipsed by the First Lady’s wardrobing choices for the photo opportunities. As The Cut pointed out, the First Lady deplaned in Houston wearing an accessory that might signal she’s finally succumbed to her husband’s affinity for merchandise: a hat that spells out “FLOTUS,” in case there were any questions surrounding her current title.

PHOTO: JIM WATSON

Though Melania skipped the signature “Make American Great Again” red, her black-and-white “FLOTUS” cap is right in line with her husband’s headgear. (President Trump has recently been spotted wearing a new “USA” style himself.) And while a FLOTUS-branded hat isn’t quite as questionable as stilettos to visit a city recovering from a Category 3 hurricane, we’re nonetheless curious as to why Melania decided now was the time to partake in the Trump family merch tradition.

Luckily, all it took was a quick scroll through Twitter to realize that we weren’t alone in this line of thought.

FLOTUS’ office has released a statement about the inordinate amount of attention Melania’s wardrobing choices have received during this official visit. But this outfit change does beg more questions—such as: Will these hats be popping up on Donald J. Trump’s official online store in the near future? Will other members of the administration also be getting the merch treatment? Only time will tell… but this might be an example of how being #onbrand can go a tad too far.
