How to Be Happy, According to Children's Book Author Judith Viorst

“What’s been your favorite time of life?” I was asked a couple of months ago. My answer astonished my questioner—and me. For instead of a choice that approximated when I fell in love, or gave birth to my first baby, or held my first published book in my hot little hands, I looked back on my 80-plus years, my nearing 90 years, and said, “Right now.”

It seems I have no wish to turn back the clock to 30 or 40 or 50 years ago. I prefer to press “hold” on the life that I currently live. That’s true in spite of the fact that I am indisputably old—not older, not elderly, just…old. And the fact that so many people I’ve loved are dead. And the fact that my upper arms are in no condition to ever again be seen in public. And the fact that, as some late-night comic once said, my back is going out more often than I am.

It’s not that the days themselves now are so fabulous. My hair is thinning. My body is not. I can’t find my glasses or keys. And I spend so much time seeing specialists that if they gave doctorates for going to doctors, I’d easily have earned a Ph.D. But still, I don’t hesitate. The best is not ahead or behind. It’s now.

Having surprised myself by finding out that my favorite time of life is right now, I decided that I would like to figure out why. And so I’ve been sorting out some of the qualities, attitudes—some of the somethings—that have helped to make me happier as I near 90.

But before I go any further, I need to observe that I’m an exceedingly lucky lady. Lucky because I’m still married to (and still love) the person I married 60 years ago, even though he still claims that he can listen to me and read the Times simultaneously. Lucky because all my children and my grandchildren are, at the moment, doing just fine. Lucky because I have friends with whom I continue to share a deep, enduring history. Lucky because I’ve somehow been spared (at least as of today) time’s harsher assaults on the body and the mind.

I’m also lucky enough to be conscious of, and grateful for, the bountiful blessings of this great good luck.

Do I have my griefs and losses, my regrets and disappointments? Of course I do. But I’ve found that being grateful, though this is something of a cliche, offers great comfort to me, and could for you, too. For cultivating gratitude for the good stuff in our life, being aware of and even counting our blessings, brightens our view of who we are and where we are in the world—and can make us happier.

I’ve found that a little surplus of gratitude often has downstream effects, helping us become more tolerant, less judgmental, more forgiving of family and friends when they annoy or neglect us, hurt our feelings, or let us down. It’s tempting to add up their failures and flaws and compare them to our far superior selves, but we make a big mistake if we do. For while most of the folks in our life can, on occasion, be pains in the ass, so—let’s face it—can I and so can you. Figuring out that we, like they, are in need of a lot of acceptance and forgiveness can make for a happier old (or any) age.

When I was younger, I spent too much time obsessing over what would make me feel better or how I imagined a certain set of circumstances would magically transform my life and career. But I learned, though it took me a while, to look around and pay attention to what—if I’d let it—could make my life feel better right here and right now. My book Nearing Ninety opens with a wonderful quote from philosopher George Santayana, whose proposition all of us should heed: “To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring.” I believe he’s telling us that instead of wistfully looking back at what we once had, or anxiously imagining what might come, we ought to be seeking what satisfactions, what pleasures, what meaning the season we’re in has to offer us.

Here's Why Ariana Grande Didn't Put Mac Miller in Her 'Thank U, Next' Burn Book

Ariana Grande’s music video is full of iconic references, including nods to some of the best rom-coms of the early aughts—but it also paid written homage to her exes, Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez and Pete Davidson, who each got a page in Ariana’s Mean Girls-inspired Burn Book. But there was something that, at first, seemed quite small—until you picked up on it: Namely, um, where was Mac Miller’s page?

Miller died of an overdose in September, several weeks before Grande and Davidson broke up. Miller and Grande had split up in May after almost two years of dating, so the news understandably hit her hard. Grande still seems to be working through his death and rather than give him a page in her Burn Book, she paid tribute to their relationship in a different way—and we’ve all just caught it now.

As Elle noted on Friday, a fan tweeted on Thanksgiving, expressing her excitement for the upcoming video: “when she flips through the thank u next burn book and pics of her with sean, ricky, pete & mac arrive……………. we had to fucking stan”

Grande’s response revealed that he wasn’t in the book—he was somewhere else in the video: “M ain’t in the book he next to my bed.”

Grande sings Miller’s verse, looking up—”Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm, ’cause he was an angel”—and then closes the book, right around the one-minute mark in the video. Behind her on the nightstand are several framed photos are. It seems likely that he’s in one of the photos, though you can’t quite see it.

Check it out for yourself, below:

Ariana Grande's 'Thank U, Next' Director Says Pete Davidson's Burn Book Page Was a Total Surprise On Set

Ariana Grande first met music video director Hannah Lux Davis in 2014 on the set for the “Bang Bang” music video. Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Jessie J, who all collaborated on the smash, had decided to hire a female director, and Minaj (who’d worked with Davis before) knew Davis was the exact woman for the job.

Grande has collaborated with Davis ever since—partnering with her on such iconic works of art as the visuals for her Dangerous Woman tour and her most recent internet-breaking, instant-hit video, “Thank U, Next.”

In that time, Davis has watched Grande grow into a fearless performer, but she still remembers her at the start of her career, when she was greener, but full of potential.

“She was kind of shy,” Davis tells Glamour, recalling the “Bang Bang” set. “Her eye contact to camera wasn’t as fierce as it is today, but I remember being like, ‘Gosh. She’s so good when she connects to camera.’ She’s just gotten so much more confident over the years, and it’s been so fun to watch.”

Davis hasn’t just been with Grande for her professional achievements—she’s seen her deal with personal highs and lows. Over time, the women have built up a trust and a bond that’s obvious in their collaborations. Take this latest video, for example. “With ‘Thank U, Next,’ I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’ve known you with all of these guys!'” Davis exclaims. “I never met Pete, but I knew her then, and I remember the Ricky phase, the Sean phase, and Mac. I was there with her for all of them! It’s cool to be somebody who’s been with her on the journey of growing up and learning and finding herself, and that’s what the song is about.”

Less than 24 hours after its premiere, “Thank U, Next” already has 47 million views. Glamour spoke with Davis about the viral response to the video, her creative process with Grande, and of course, the Burn Book.

GLAMOUR: You’ve worked on a lot of huge music videos with artists like Nicki Minaj, Demi Lovato, and of course, Ariana, but what is it about “Thank U, Next” that is resonating with viewers in a way we’ve never seen before?

HANNAH LUX DAVIS: Well I think all eyes are on Ariana right now, and it’s such a personal and relatable song. In terms of the video, it hits a lot of notes of nostalgia, which brings in different audiences. It’s not just her younger fans, but also people who love the movies [we recreated], who might not at first be Ariana fans, but still want to tune in. But [the reaction] definitely feels really different and exciting. Ariana and I have been FaceTiming all day—she loves to FaceTime, she’ll never do a phone call or a voicemail, just a FaceTime—and she was just like, “oh my god.” We’ve been sitting on the phone just staring at each other going, “Oh my god, oh my god,” a million times back and forth, because that’s how it feels.

GLAMOUR: I read an interview you did with Billboard about your creative process with Ariana. Like how when you were working on the “Side to Side” video she came to you and said, “Let’s do something with spin bikes,” and you just took it from there. What vision did she come to you with, this time?

HLD: We were working on “Breathin” in New York, and I came over to her place and we were sitting on the floor in the living room with dogs and animals everywhere, even Piggy Smalls, who’s so cute. He’s like an old man girl, because she smells and feels like an old man, but is a lady. So we’re sitting on the floor and she was like I want to play you my new song, which was “Thank U, Next.” I was in total shock because I was like, “Oh my god she’s listing names.”

We narrowed it down to films that had the same common thread of a strong female lead, who went through a breakup, and came out on the other side a more empowered, strong, version of themselves.

Then we were talking about a video and she was like, “What about Mean Girls and a Burn Book? But instead of a Burn Book it’s a “Thank U, Next” book and I write all these things I’m thankful for in the Burn Book about the guys?” So right away you’re like, “Yeah, that’s it.” Then we went down a rabbit hole of that genre and that time and era and then we were like what if we did Legally Blonde? We just started listing movies and we were like, “We have to do Bring It On and 13 Going on 30.” Then we had to cool it and were like ok, four movies. Let’s do four.

We narrowed it down really organically to films that had the same common thread of a strong female lead, who went through a breakup, and came out on the other side a more empowered, strong, version of themselves—which is very much true to what the song was about. Like with Elle Woods, her ex-boyfriend lead her to Harvard, where she found her passion. She’s obviously grateful for her ex! So we focused on these situations that push characters into positions that are uncomfortable, but they realize they can do it and that’s a great message for young girls.

GLAMOUR: Another fun thing about this video is that it was an epic reunion. You and Ariana got to work together again, Jennifer Coolidge was able to reprise her iconic role as Paulette in Legally Blonde, and the cast of Victorious to came together for the first time in years. It just seemed like the best time. But what was it actually like on set?

HLD: She had a lot of her friends and former cast mates from other shows and any time somebody got to set and were in wardrobe they were just like, “Oh my god can you believe we’re doing it?” Ariana was like, “This is a coolest thing being a pop star has ever allowed me to do. To bring all these people together, all of these ideas together and to actually pull it off and do it justice.” [My favorite] behind the scenes moments were when Ariana would take a moment and just geek out over reenacting these scenes and getting to put a 2018 spin on it.

GLAMOUR: Speaking of cameos, the internet’s favorite one is far and away Kris Jenner. How did you get her to play the most epic amateur momager of all time?

HLD: So good, right? If you don’t use Amy Poehler, or Joan Grande herself, it’s gotta be Kris Jenner. It was Ariana’s idea to include her. They’re friends, so Ariana reached out and Kris was interested. It was a fast process to get her on board. On set she didn’t take herself too seriously and just got right in there and got into character so effortlessly. It was so funny because we’re doing all these ad libs with her and I was like, “No this is actually you! You are this person.” We had a few different Juicy sweatsuit options and we wanted to make sure it was just right. We had more than five so we could find the perfect one for her, and we found the right vibe.

GLAMOUR: So the Burn Book was the initial conceit of the video. How much of it did you have planned out? Did you and Ariana talk about what she’d write about each guy ahead of time?

HLD: She knew that she wanted to keep it positive, fun, and tongue-in-cheek. She was like, “Oh my god I should totally be like, ‘could still get it’ for Sean.” She kind of had some of these premeditated; like for Pete, writing, “huuuuuuge.” The one that came out as we were filming was the “sorry I dipped.” We were rolling and she was writing in the book, and we had to have her write multiple pages because we had to do multiple takes, but on that last take, she wrote “sry I dipped.” It was just like, gold. It was so real! She was so honest and that’s what makes it so fun.

GLAMOUR: Speaking of “huuuuuge” there were a lot of awesome Easter eggs in the video, including the references to “BDE” (Big Dick Energy) like on the logo of the UPS guy’s uniform, in the Legally Blonde homage! How did you decide to reference Pete’s uh, “size,” in this video?

HLD: I love that you saw that! I don’t want to tell people the Easter eggs, I want them to find them. But as for the uniform, [the actor] was actually wearing a UPS logo on the uniform, and we had to change it in post. Which is so fun because we get to go back and change things and that idea was all her, [to write BDE as the logo instead of UPS on the uniform]. We didn’t want [the guys] to be mad about anything so we were like let’s keep it fun, so if they see it they’d be like, yeah, that’s cool.

GLAMOUR: Pete certainly can’t get mad about this one!

HLD: Exactly!

Barack Obama Celebrated Michelle's New Book In the Sweetest Way

Before its release on Tuesday, Michelle Obama’s new memoir Becoming had been so highly anticipated, it received more pre-orders at Barnes & Noble than any book since Harper Lee’s 2015 novel Go Set a Watchman. But it’s Barack Obama who seems to have been more excited than anyone.

On Tuesday, the former president went on Instagram and made a plug for his wife’s memoir—but being Barack Obama, he did so in the most romantic way.

“Of course, @MichelleObama’s my wife, so I’m a little biased here,” he wrote in a post that included a picture of the memoir sitting on a table. “But she also happens to be brilliant, funny, wise – one of a kind. This book tells her quintessentially American story. I love it because it faithfully reflects the woman I have loved for so long.”

It’s not the first time the Obamas have showered each other with love on social media. They commemorated their most recent anniversary with some adorable photos, and Michelle posted this stunning wedding throwback ahead of the book’s release. We also can’t forget (or stop playing) that Valentine’s Day mix Michelle made Barack in February.

Becoming is an intimate look at Michelle’s early life and career, and it takes readers behind-the-scenes during her tenure as First Lady. Michelle describes deeply personal moments in detail, discussing everything from embarrassing her daughter Malia on prom night to coping with a miscarriage and fertility issues earlier in her marriage.

On Wednesday, Michelle kicked off a 12-stop tour in Chicago, where she joined Oprah Winfrey for an interview about the memoir. She shared a few things that weren’t in the book, including how she broke down in tears after Inauguration Day in 2017.

“I didn’t write about this in the book, because I had forgotten about it … when I got on the plane I think I sobbed for 30 minutes,” she said. “I think it was just the release of eight years of trying to do everything perfectly. I said to Barack, ‘That was so hard. What we just did that was so hard and I’ve wanted to say that for eight years.'”

Becoming is already striking a chord with audiences. It topped Amazon’s best-seller list days before its official release, showing that most people are with Barack when it comes to his wife’s brilliant work.

Michelle Obama Is Selling Out Arenas for Her Book Tour—and Some Tickets Cost as Much as $3,000

Michelle Obama and her BFF Beyoncé have a lot in common: They’re strong women. They’re constantly referred to as “queen.” Oh, and people are willing to shell out hundreds—maybe even thousands—for a ticket to see them.

Tickets for Michelle Obama’s upcoming book tour for her new memoir Becoming recently went on sale. And while it wasn’t a big surprise how quickly fans snapped them up, the price tag did come as a shock to some. Obama will appear in 12 cities across the United States—two extra stops were added to the originally planned 10-city tour to meet the demand—and prices for the event range from a reasonably affordable $29.50 to as much as $3,000. Naturally, the cheaper ones sold out first, according to The Washington Post, leaving only the more expensive options available.

For those who do have $3,000 to spend, it’ll get you more than just a seat in the front row. For that price, guests get to attend a meet-and-greet reception with Obama that includes a pre-show photo opportunity, a signed book, and an “exclusive VIP gift item,” among other perks. Still, some aren’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of paying an arm and a leg to see Michelle Obama’s toned arms IRL.

The price isn’t the only headline-making news about Obama’s upcoming tour. She’s selling out full arenas, which isn’t exactly a regular occurrence for book tours. This has fans likening her to Madonna in the ’80s or, yes, Beyoncé.

And Michelle Obama herself apparently wasn’t prepared for the immense reaction to her tour. “Truly humbled by the response to my upcoming book tour,” she wrote on Twitter. “I can’t wait to share BECOMING with all of you & hope to see you somewhere along the way!”

The tour kicks off in Chicago on November 13, and some tickets are still on sale for a few locations—at least, for now.
