Ariana Grande Transformed Her Home Into a Full Haunted Hotel for Halloween

Ariana Grande went all out for Halloween 2019. The star threw a massive party, transforming her entire home into a haunted hotel for the occasion. The themed costume bash, which she called “Ariana’s Twilight Zone,” included Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Demi Lovato, Grande’s brother Frankie, and tons of other celebs who turned up for the full spooky experience.

On Instagram, Grande shared scenes from the big event, which featured a long, creepy dinner table surrounded by skeletons and lots of candles to set the ambiance. The whole thing was the perfect setting for Grande to show off her chilling costume: She paid homage to the classic Twilight Zone series by putting on prosthetics that imitated ones from the episode “Eye of the Beholder.” (To refresh your memory, the episode involves a woman taking off bandages after surgery to fit into an alternate universe where everyone’s faces have been horrifyingly distorted.)

Grande shared several pictures of her creative costume and party decor on social media and thanked design planner Tricia Smith Brown for helping decorate her house. “Thank you @triciasmithbrown & team for transforming my home into the most stunning, haunted hotel,” she wrote in a since-deleted post. “I can’t believe how incredible everything and everyone was. thank you for making all my spooky, twisted, twilight zone dreams come true.”

The party also had a photo booth set up, where Grande’s celeb friend showed off their own Halloween get-ups. Frankie posted a few shots, captioning the images, “the family that scares together… ????.” He took a photo with Lovato, who commented on his post, “Love you!!!” Minaj also shared a black-and-white picture from the photo booth that included her friends and Grande, writing, “#BESTSTIES.”

Best Halloween Makeup, According to Haunted House Actors

Asking a beauty professional—whether it’s a celebrity hairstylist, makeup artist, or Instagram influencer (hi, 2019)—for advice is always a safe bet. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find there are plenty of other women out there who are legitimate authorities in their own right. In our column, Unlikely Experts, they’ll give real reviews and recommendations. Whether it’s surfers on the best conditioners, bikers on the best cleansers, or ballerinas on the best foot creams, it’s fair to say these women know best.

Every Halloween around 3 million Americans willingly pay money to be scared shitless at a haunted house. No longer just a Halloween hobby, haunted attractions have evolved into a million-dollar industry and full-on experiences, including covering guests in blood, strapping them to hospital beds, or promising $20,000 to those who survive. While I personally will never understand handing over your hard-earned cash in exchange for being traumatized, there’s certainly an art to creating a truly terrifying experience. The set and scenery play a crucial role in creating the environment, of course, but the real scare factor is courtesy of the actors doing the lurking, grabbing, and spooking, all with a face of makeup that’s the stuff nightmares are made of.

Creating a successful monster goes beyond simply creating a horrifying look (although that’s definitely a huge part of it), but the makeup also must last through several hours of sweating and screaming, and be easy enough to remove at the end of the night. While some scare actors (as they’re called in the biz) do their own makeup, most large haunts have a whole team dedicated to creating dripping wounds, rotting flesh, and terrifying teeth night after night.

While scrolling through Instagram is a great way to get inspired, if you want to know what products really get the job done, turn to haunted houses. We spoke to six scare actors and makeup artists from the best haunted attractions in the country on the products they rely on season after season.

“This a classic exorcist meets ghoul face that is the base of a lot of our more human looks,” says Aryn Fox, makeup manager and actor at The Dent Schoolhouse in Cincinnati, OH. Fox is a self-taught makeup artist who got her start playing with special effect makeup as a goth kid, but has being doing makeup at the Schoolhouse for 10 years now. For the above look, she uses Mehron Celebre Cream Color in alabaster for a “ghoulish base,” and she loves that it stays on through heavy sweating. For the veins and texture she mixes the European Body Art SFX Alcohol Palette with 99% alcohol, and to create the black drip she mixes Ben Nye Character Powder in charcoal with the alcohol to “mimic black ooze and blood.” To finish off the look she adds colored contacts and tooth color, “nothing makes me more ready to scare than some added tooth rot!”

Watch Chrissy Teigen Almost Lose It Going Through a Haunted House on Ellen

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…when everyone subjects themselves to terrifying experiences all in the name of some Halloween fun. We binge-watch The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix, scream over the return of Michael Myers in Halloween, and pay good money to have strangers in costumes scare us senseless at haunted houses and hayrides.

It’s also deeply gratifying—and hilarious—to watch other people completely lose it because they’re scared. Case in point: This incredible video of Chrissy Teigen and Ellen Degeneres’ executive producer Andy Lassner making their way through a haunted maze. Come for the screams, stay for the laughs.

Degeneres sent the two into the “Purge maze” at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights with a camera crew to document the experience. It’s an annual tradition for the talk show host to send Lassner into a haunted house for our viewing pleasure. In the past, he’s been accompanied by Modern Family‘s Eric Stonestreet, a writer from the staff, or even his own assistant. This year Teigen got the call—and, as with most things, she makes it even better.

To be fair, that haunted maze looks hella frightening and every person working inside would have made me lose it and scream a few obscenities, too. At various points Lassner resorts to crawling on the ground or attempting to physically shield himself with Teigen, who mocks his “alpha male” behavior once they finally make it back to daylight. Though, she also thinks he’s a “national treasure” and she’s totally right.

Lassner tweeted, “Ugh. Here ya go sickos. I hope my humiliation makes your day a little bit better.❤️”

Past years’ videos have garnered upwards of 18 million views, so people on social media were naturally very excited about this year’s installment. “Laughing so hard I’m crying,” one wrote. “This just made my entire day,” another tweeted. “I love you so much Andy your are such an alpha! Will be watching again on TV when I get home. Thank you!!”

Happy almost-Halloween, everyone!
