Zendaya Just Showed Everyone How an Inclusive Fashion Show Is Done

Zendaya has a solid reputation as champion for inclusivity—and her ventures in fashion are no exception. This week in her first TommyNow collection with Tommy Hilfiger at Paris Fashion Week Zendaya showed the entire industry how to put on an inclusive—and fun—fashion show.

Inspired by disco-era designs, the Tommy x Zendaya was a party filled with colorful clothing, and top models of color in a full spectrum of sizes. In a fashion week that tends to run exceptionally low on showing women outside sample sizes, it was a major standout in the best way. Unfortunately for our wallets (but fortunately for our late-winter style ruts), the whole collection is shoppable online now too.

The inspiration behind her groovy show requires a little history lesson. Back in 1973, French and American top designers (think Givenchy and Dior, Halston and Oscar de la Renta) faced off in Paris in the “Battle of Versailles,” a challenge to see if America could overcome its reputation of being the “poor country cousin to French couture,” as WWD explained in an interview with Zendaya. The Americans wound up the victor, thanks to modern designs and designer Stephen Burrows’ casting of black models who brought it on the runway with “fun-loving attitudes and moves” that “stole the show” reports WWD. They also broke major ground for future women of color. It’s from this headline-making show that Zendaya and her stylist, Law Roach, told WWD that they drew inspiration.

“We’re paying homage to these women who changed our legacy…and allowed for me and so many others to be here. I remember when my Vogue cover came out, Beverly Johnson [the first African American model to land the cover of American Vogue] tweeted me congratulations, and I said this wouldn’t be possible without you,” said Zendaya. “This is about saying we appreciate and love you.”

Zendaya also said that size diversity was critical for her as they went to cast the show—a first for the Tommy Hilfiger runway.

“Size inclusivity has been important to me always—if women in my family can’t all wear it, I don’t want to make it,” Zendaya told WWD “We had plus size models, which Tommy has never done before.”

“Ten plus[-size] girls out here from New York,” Roach added. “[Zendaya] pushes me to say it has to be everyone, she’s changed my idea of what should and shouldn’t be for women.”

Hilfiger also told WWD that casting the show was up to the duo. “I said, ‘Do what you think is best.’ Obviously a couple of girls have been in our family, Winnie Harlow is one, so I said make sure they are included. But they really chose.”

Zendaya Is Taking Over for Gigi Hadid as the Face of Tommy Hilfiger

Zendaya is an actor, a singer, and, of course, Meechee—but she’s adding yet another hat to her collection: designer.

Zendaya was announced as Tommy Hilfiger‘s newest global women’s ambassador, a role previously held by Gigi Hadid. As part of the gig, she’ll work alongside the American designer on a capsule collection (much like the supermodel did) due out in Spring 2019.

“I love to collaborate with people who are passionate about making their dreams a reality and who inspire the next generation to do the same,” Hilfiger said in a press release. “Zendaya has become a global icon, using fashion to make bold statements while always staying true to herself. Our capsule collection will fuse her eclectic style with the Americana spirit of our brand.”

“Fashion is more than just wearing cool clothes,” Zendaya said in the release. “It’s a way to celebrate self-expression and individuality, which is extremely empowering. This is why I am proud to partner with Tommy Hilfiger.” She celebrated the new gig by sharing a photo of herself with Hilfiger and her longtime stylist, Law Roach.

Though neither gave any hints about what the collection will include, the brand’s Instagram posts announce the partnership have a distinctly ’60s vibe, with references to several zodiac signs. Hilfiger told WWD that you can expect it to be primarily the product of Zendaya’s own brain and sense of style: “In our collaborations, we’ve found that we take as much information, inspiration and direction from the collaborators as possible. We really want to infuse the collection with their ideas. They are really the target consumer. And one of the reasons we’ve chosen the girls that we’ve chosen is they have very specific ideas about what the looks should be. And it really helps us evolve our brand.”

Tommy x Zendaya is expected to launch in February as a “see-now-buy-now” spring line. Though the brand announced only one season’s collaboration as part of the global women’s ambassador role, both parties will reportedly have the option to continue working together for more collections, per WWD. Zendaya will also appear in Tommy Hilfiger’s global marketing campaigns, beginning next spring.

This isn’t the first time Zendaya tries her hand at designing: She previously had a clothing line called Daya by Zendaya, which she created with Roach.

Zendaya Posted a Makeup Tutorial for the Ultimate New Year’s Eve Smoky Eye

If there’s one night of the whole year to go all out glam with your makeup, it’s New Years Eve. We’re talking glitter liner, unicorn highlighter, a bright red lip—now’s definitely the time to try a bold look. Party makeup, after all, was basically made for celebrating the start of the new year. There are a ton of amazing celebrities’ beauty looks that would be perfect for the occasion, but Zendaya just gave us a step-by-step tutorial for nailing her own choice of look for the evening: a (very sultry) smoky eye—with a twist.

The actress, who happens to be extremely talented when it comes to doing her own makeup, filmed a makeup tutorial with beauty influencer Alissa Ashley so the pair could take us through the process of getting two statement-making smoky eye looks just in time for Sunday’s round of parties.

For the tutorial, Zendaya went with a dark bronzey eye—a twist from the normal gray-based tones—and a glossy lip. She starts with her eye makeup, leaving her skin bare until the smoky eye is almost complete. Then she focuses on her skin, leaving her brows for last. “It’s my little treat at the end,” she says.

After priming her eyes, she smudges the CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner ($5.19) up from her lash line and onto her lid to create her smoky eye. She tops it off with some false lashes before patting on a bronzey shadow just in the center of her lid as an added highlight.

For the skin, Zendaya uses foundation as her base and her contour, blending them all together before setting her makeup for a seamless finish. “I use just darker shades of foundation, basically,” she says. “And I like to blend it in with a fluffy brush, so I blend my creams in with a blush brush.”

Zendaya uses the shade Shell from the CoverGirl Tru Naked Eyeshadow Palette ($9.99) as a highlight on her cheekbones. It’s a frosty shade that still looks natural and not too in-your-face, keeping all the attention on the eyes. She topped it all off with some lipgloss and some setting spray (because no one’s got time to retouch on New Year’s Eve).

Best of all, the final product is easy enough to recreate before heading out to dance off the last of 2017. Watch a sneak peek of the tutorial below…

…and then head to her website for the full how-to.

Zendaya Found a Secret Lookalike in The Rock's Daughter

The Internet is torn: Either Zendaya is an expert time traveler, or she has an adorable little doppelgänger. Those, apparently, are the only two possible explanations for how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s daughter, Jasmine Lia, who will celebrate her second birthday this weekend, looks exactly like a tiny Zendaya.

People first took note of the uncanny resemblance at The Rock’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on Wednesday. Jasmine and her mom, The Rock’s longtime partner, Lauren Hashian, accompanied the Moana star to the ceremony, where he was honored with his very own star on the iconic pathway. According to People, The Rock picked up Jasmine partway through his speech to make a point about his life’s purpose. “The hard work, the work you put in with your own two hands—it all comes down to this. It all comes down to your family, and working hard to love and protect and do everything you can to make your family and the ones you love, their lives better,” he said, before Jasmine stole the show by telling her dad “I love you” into the mic. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

As adorable as the father-daughter moment was, people were mostly enraptured by just how much little Jasmine looks like Zendaya. “When they do a Zendaya biopic we know who’ll play her childhood years,” one person tweeted, because we will definitely eventually need a biopic about Queen Z. Others pointed out that the lookalike situation means that Zendaya and The Rock can easily play daughter and dad in an award-winning comedy film. And a few more hypothesized that Jasmine and Zendaya aren’t two separate people at all, but one Zendaya time traveling back and forth, which, sure? Zendaya herself even commented on the #twinning situation, retweeting a few photos of Jasmine and adding, “OMG ????.”

Watch Zendaya Stop an Interview Just to Fix a Reporter's Hair

During Zendaya‘s latest interview with Film Web TV for her new movie The Greatest Showman, she and co-star Zac Efron discussed their chemistry, their big on-screen kiss, and what it’s like to fly through the air (and sometimes painfully into each other) on trapezes. But the highlight of the interview comes when Zendaya does a very Zendaya-like thing: helping the reporter with his hair.

As the interviewer was about to ask his first question, Zendaya ran over to give him a quick hair check. “Hold on, really quick, I don’t want to be weird. This is gonna bother me,” she said as she patted down a flyaway. “You had one piece of hair that was just sticking up. I was like, ‘He’s gonna be mad about it when he sees it later.’ I got you.” The reporter thanks Zendaya for her help (as he should!). “See? That’s what she would do for me,” Efron chimes in.

Take a look at the adorable moment for yourself, below:

Hey, Zendaya, can we be best friends? My friends wouldn’t even tell me if I spilled coffee down the front of my shirt because they’d be too busy Snapchatting it… Which is why the world needs more people like Zendaya, the kind of person who isn’t afraid to (kindly!) tell you that there’s food stuck on your teeth or that your eyeliner looks uneven. It’s no surprise, though—she’s always super real on her social media platforms, calling herself out on awkward moments and developing unibrows…

You can check out Zendaya in The Greatest Showman when it comes out on Wednesday, December 20.

Reese Witherspoon and Zendaya Are Partnering for an Amazing New Movie

Reese Witherspoon has made a habit over the past few years of picking female-centered projects. From Gone Girl to Wild to this year’s Emmy-winning smash Big Little Lies, Witherspoon is using her power in Hollywood to amplify women’s voices in front of and behind the camera, and we’re so here for that. Now Zendaya is adding to the girl power by collaborating with Witherspoon as a co-producer on an amazing new film—and she’ll star in it too.

Deadline reports that Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, will produce a new psychological thriller, A White Lie. The movie’s based on the Karin Tanabe novel The Gilded Years and centers on a light-skinned black woman named Anita Hemmings (who will be played by—wait for it—Zendaya). Hemmings was the first black women to graduate from Vassar College in 1897—a time when African Americans weren’t allowed to attend the school. Hemmings passed as a white woman to get her degree.

The movie will show Hemmings fully immersing herself into upper-class New York society, where she’s treated as a wealthy white woman. She even finds romance with a rich Harvard student, but he doesn’t know her real identity (nor does anyone else). She has to keep it a secret—hence, ya know, the title.

This project seems like a perfect fit for Zendaya, who’s spoken candidly in the past about wanting to tell more black women’s stories. In fact, she echoed this sentiment at Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards on Monday night, where she presented congresswoman Maxine Waters with a lifetime achievement award.

“Have you ever been the only woman in a room? What about the only black woman in a room? Our next honoree has reminded us over and over again when we are faced with the despair and defeating odds of that room, we can not allow it to intimidate us,” Zendaya said.
