Pinterest and The Knot Will No Longer Romanticize Wedding Venues on Former Slave Plantations

Pinterest and wedding website The Knot have faced criticism for content that romanticizes weddings held on former slave plantations, and according to a new report, they’re finally changing their policies. In a BuzzFeed News exclusive, the two platforms say they’re issuing new guidelines and rethinking the language used when discussing vendors and venues linked to plantation history.

Color of Change, a civil rights advocacy group, had outlined the ways in which promoting former slave plantations is harmful in letters sent to Pinterest and The Knot, as well as to Zola, Brides, and Martha Stewart Weddings. According to BuzzFeed, the letters explained that “plantations are physical reminders of one of the most horrific human rights abuses the world has ever seen. The wedding industry routinely denies the violent conditions Black people faced under chattel slavery by promoting plantations as romantic places to marry.” Color of Change also wrote that “the decision to glorify plantations as nostalgic sites of celebration is not an empowering one for the Black women and justice-minded people who use your site.”

The Knot is now working with the organization to change its approach. BuzzFeed News spoke to Dhanusha Sivajee, chief marketing officer of The Knot’s umbrella company, The Knot Worldwide (which also owns Wedding Wire), who explained that although venues and vendors associated with plantation history will still appear on the site, the language used in regard to them will change. The guidelines The Knot is figuring out will limit vendor descriptions that glamorize former slave plantations by characterizing them as “charming” or “elegant.” “We want to make sure we’re serving all our couples and that they don’t feel in any way discriminated against,” Sivajee told BuzzFeed News.

Pinterest has similar plans. A spokesperson also told BuzzFeed News that the company plans to de-index plantation weddings in its Google searches and limit wedding plantation content on the platform. People will be able to find the content if they look for it, but it’ll come with an advisory notice that states it could violate policy. “Weddings should be a symbol of love and unity. Plantations represent none of those things,” the spokesperson told BuzzFeed in an email. “We are working to limit the distribution of this content and accounts across our platform, and continue to not accept advertisements for them.”

The romanticization of plantation venues has been an unsettling trend in the wedding industry, and even celebrities have been called out for embracing the uncomfortable fad. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were criticized online after getting married at Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina in 2012.

This Couple Had an Olive Garden-Themed Wedding, and the Pictures Are Incredible

Is there anything more magical than an Olive Garden breadstick bar at your wedding? Not for Samantha Roberts and Jeff Gilleland, a couple from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who got married this year after spending several years bonding over their shared love of Olive Garden. According to The Knot, Roberts grew up going to the chain with her family, while Gilleland fell for Olive Garden later in his adulthood. They often had date nights at the restaurant, so, naturally, they served its food at their wedding.

Olive Garden didn’t just feature prominently in the bride and groom’s wedding celebration; it played a huge role in their engagement story, too. According to The Knot, Gilleland had been one of 50 lucky customers who bought the restaurant’s limited and highly exclusive Pasta Passport to Italy, which offered purchasers an all-inclusive, one-week trip to Italy for just $200, along with an all-access pass to Olive Garden for a year. He and Roberts jetted off to Italy, where Gilleland eventually proposed. Later, there was a full-on Olive Garden-themed engagement photoshoot, but that was just a preview before the big event.

“When you love the chicken parm as much as we do, it becomes a pretty easy decision where to eat,” the couple told Insider about their love of Olive Garden.

Their wedding included dinner options for chicken parmesan, fettuccine Alfredo, and spaghetti. There was also a full breadstick bar set up with bowls and bowls of marinara sauce. And as if getting to attend this iconic wedding wasn’t enough, guests left with a very special wedding favor: never-ending pasta passes, which allows restaurant patrons to eat as much pasta as they want for nine weeks. Consider us jealous—and also very hungry.

Serena Williams Celebrates Two-Year Wedding Anniversary to Alexis Ohanian With Sweet Instagram Posts

It’s been two years since Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian tied the knot in a gorgeous New Orleans wedding attended by everyone from Kim Kardashian to Beyoncé. This week, they celebrated their anniversary with a bunch of super sweet, gushy Instagram posts that illustrated how tight-knit their bond is. But they also added one very unexpected and relatable twist to the festivities: They took a trip to Popeyes to try the highly-coveted new chicken sandwich, solidifying their place as one of our favorite couples ever.

Williams uploaded a cute, never-before-seen shot of the two of them on their wedding day, writing, “2 years and counting…. @alexisohanian is still putting putting up with me.” Later, she added a photo slideshow that chronicles their moments dating and becoming parents together, setting it to music and writing in the caption, “2 years and counting happy anniversary my love.”

But it was on her Instagram stories that Williams revealed their fast-food anniversary journey. “I did not want to try it,” she joked in one slide. “But it’s my anniversary … This is a no judgement me zone.” She then shared a video of Ohanian walking toward her car with a bag of Popeyes in his hand, explaining to her that the chain had the sandwich but they had run out of pickles. The next few clips features Williams saying, “Oh my God,” as she enjoyed the sandwich. Ohanian asks her how it is a few times before Williams finally cracks, “Have I known life before this day?” This is pretty much the wedding anniversary of our dreams.

The Reddit co-founder previously wrote about the success of their marriage for Glamour, explaining that for him, the most important lesson is that “you have to show up” for the person that you love. Pretty sure it makes things even better when you show up—and bring a Popeyes sandwich with you.

18 Winter Wedding Guest Dresses for Every Occasion, Budget, and Style

Unlike summer weddings which call for airy, almost sheer fabrics, finding the best winter wedding guest dresses calls for a little more drama. Long sleeves, dark colors, and velvet are usually what come to mind as proper attire, but this season’s options are also full of rich jewel tones, snakeskin prints, playful hemlines, and gravity-defying puffy-sleeves.

But before committing to a dress, think about the time and location. Are you jetting off to a sunny spot for a day-time destination wedding? Or are you attending a rustic afternoon reception in a barn? Next up is the couple. Are these your rowdy best friends who are bound to throw a killer afterparty? Or are they old work acquaintances with a strict black tie dress code? Then, of course, you have to think about your own personal style, budget, and whether or not you plan on re-wearing the dress (trust us—it’s not a faux-pas when even Kate Middleton does it).

No matter where you’re headed to see your loved ones say “I do,” consider your dress options sorted. Whether it’s a sequin midi from Rixo, a black tie gown from Marchesa Notte, or disco-ready dress from Rebecca Minkoff, we found options for every occasion, budget, and destination. Ahead, 18 winter wedding guest dresses you’ll want to wear everywhere.

Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney's Wedding: Everything We Know So Far

Wedding bells are ringing this weekend for Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney, her art gallerist fiancé.

Lawrence and Maroney have had a pretty private relationship. Page Six broke the news that they had begun dating in June 2018. An unnamed source said that “the relationship has been going on a few weeks, but they have been very private and careful not to be seen together.” The couple occasionally was spotted together on dates until February 2019, when Lawrence’s rep confirmed to People that Lawrence and Maroney had gotten engaged.

On the other side of her engagement, Lawrence has shared small details about her relationship with Maroney and their future plans. In a June interview with Entertainment Tonight, she described Maroney as “just the best person I’ve ever met in my whole life.” Accepting his proposal was “a very, very easy decision,” she said.

“He’s my best friend, so I wanted to legally bind myself to him forever,” Lawrence said in another June interview on Cat Sadler’s podcast, Naked With Cat Sadler. “And fortunately, the paperwork exists for such a thing. It’s the greatest.”

In the same interview, Lawrence added that planning for her upcoming nuptials has been a fairly laid-back process. “I haven’t been neurotic about it. I’m too lazy to be neurotic. I like saw a dress I liked. I said, ‘Oh, that’s the dress.’ I saw a venue, and I was like, ‘Cool, we got the venue.'”

Wedding celebrations started long before the official ceremony. Lawrence and Maroney hosted an engagement party in May.

Here’s everything we know about Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney’s wedding plans so far.

The date. The couple touched down in Rhode Island on Friday, October 18. The ceremony is reportedly taking place on Saturday, October 19.

The location. Lawrence and Maroney will exchange vows at the Belcourt of Newport, a luxurious estate housed on an island off of Newport, Rhode Island. The chateau has a storied history: Designed in 1894, it was inspired by King Louis XIII’s Versailles, France hunting lodge. It’s currently home to Alex & Ani CEO Carolyn Rafaelian.

The guest list. People reports that around 150 guests are expected to attend this weekend’s wedding. Arrivals ahead of Friday’s rehearsal dinner included Lawrence’s longtime friends Adele and Kris Jenner. Reported guests also include Bradley Cooper, Nicole Richie, and Joel Madden.

Jennifer Lopez Was Spotted Wearing the Most Blinged-Out Wedding Dress

Marry Me is slated to hit theaters in 2020. As for when Jennifer Lopez is expected to marry Alex Rodriguez, well, that’s still a mystery. The couple hasn’t set a date yet, but Lopez did open up about their plans briefly in a recent interview with Evening Standard.

“I have a movie I’m shooting in October [Marry Me], and the movie has an album that goes with it, so I’m just a little bit busy right now, and until October, he has the World Series in baseball,” she said. “We’re going to have to pick a day, pick a time and block it out, but we’re definitely talking about it. [Marriage is] important for both of us. We both come from traditional Latin families and we want that. Everyone wants somebody to grow old with. At the end of the day, how much work can you do, how much money can you make, and what does it all matter? It doesn’t, really.”
