Stassi Schroeder: Help—My Guest List Is Stressing Me Out

Then we asked, “Who have we actually spent time with in the last year?”

Which then became, “Who have we actually spent time with in the last six months?”

And finally, “Who do we think is going to play a part in our future together?” We want to know that everyone we’re inviting will be a part of our lives after we’re married, too.

That helped us narrow our guest list down a lot. Because at first, Beau and I did disagree about it. While I prefer to surround myself with a smaller group of friends, he’s the guy with a million friends and acquaintances. Needless to say, there were a lot of people he wanted to include. But that shifted once we got into the wedding budget. When he saw how expensive each person is and how everything adds up, Beau was very quick to start shortening the list. I’m always like, “Is this person worth a designer handbag?” And he’ll say, “Yeah, let’s cut the list.”

It also helps that we’re paying for the wedding ourselves, so our families have zero freaking say. We’re taking care of it, so we’re the bosses, and it is what it is. They’ve made suggestions, of course, and we’ve just thrown them out the window. No, your work friend’s aunt is not invited. Sorry. No one’s daring to ask anymore.

At this point, the most stressful thing is actually all the speculation about whether or not [my Vanderpump Rules’ castmate] Kristen Doute will be invited. The headlines and comments on my Instagram do upset me at times. People will say, “You’re a really bad friend, and I hope you invite Kristen.” Or ask, “Are you just holding this over her head?” No, I’m not holding an invitation over anyone’s head. It’s already hard enough making a guest list in private, but to have it public with so many opinions from strangers takes a toll emotionally.

The truth is, I just don’t know yet, but my heart wants Kristen there. I am praying and hoping that we get to a good place where we understand each other. But I have no idea how this year will go. I have no idea if we’ll be getting along. I have no idea where our relationship will be. We might end up watching this season of Vanderpump Rules and be even more angry with each other. And why would I invite someone who’s angry with me to one of the most important days of my life?

I’m trying to figure it out, but it doesn’t help that it’s all anyone wants to talk about with me. Just because someone’s on my cast doesn’t mean they’re automatically invited. My friends are obviously coming, but James Kennedy and I don’t have a relationship. We’ve never been friends. We’ve never even sat and had a conversation together. So he’s not invited. It’s nothing against him, he just isn’t in our lives. I wouldn’t expect to be invited to his wedding. It is what it is.

But you never know—the guest list is still in flux. I feel like I’ll constantly be reworking it up until the day of the wedding. Is that a thing? Can you send last minute invites?

Honestly, I shouldn’t be writing an advice column on this topic because clearly I’m the one who needs help. It’s stressful to examine each person in your life and how they make you feel. I can’t invite people just because they’re expecting it or around my group of friends a lot. I’m really trying to focus on the fact that this is about me and Beau and good energy. If you have even a hint of negative energy, you’re not coming. So namaste, bitches.

18 Winter Wedding Guest Dresses for Every Occasion, Budget, and Style

Unlike summer weddings which call for airy, almost sheer fabrics, finding the best winter wedding guest dresses calls for a little more drama. Long sleeves, dark colors, and velvet are usually what come to mind as proper attire, but this season’s options are also full of rich jewel tones, snakeskin prints, playful hemlines, and gravity-defying puffy-sleeves.

But before committing to a dress, think about the time and location. Are you jetting off to a sunny spot for a day-time destination wedding? Or are you attending a rustic afternoon reception in a barn? Next up is the couple. Are these your rowdy best friends who are bound to throw a killer afterparty? Or are they old work acquaintances with a strict black tie dress code? Then, of course, you have to think about your own personal style, budget, and whether or not you plan on re-wearing the dress (trust us—it’s not a faux-pas when even Kate Middleton does it).

No matter where you’re headed to see your loved ones say “I do,” consider your dress options sorted. Whether it’s a sequin midi from Rixo, a black tie gown from Marchesa Notte, or disco-ready dress from Rebecca Minkoff, we found options for every occasion, budget, and destination. Ahead, 18 winter wedding guest dresses you’ll want to wear everywhere.

Meghan Markle Is the Guest Editor of British Vogue's September Issue

Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle is adding another role to her accomplished resume: Vogue editor. Specifically, she’s the very first guest editor of British Vogue‘s September issue—the biggest one of the year. The magazine and the palace both announced the news on Sunday evening (July 28) via social media.

“Introducing the September 2019 issue of #BritishVogue, guest-edited by HRH The Duchess of Sussex @SussexRoyal,” British Vogue wrote in an Instagram post with the issue cover. “Entitled #ForcesForChange, the cover features 15 world-leading women who are reshaping public life for global good, and were personally chosen by The Duchess of Sussex, and British Vogue’s editor-in-chief @Edward_Enninful.”

Included among the many women on the cover are Gemma Chan, Yara Shahidi, Greta Thunberg, Laverne Cox, and Jane Fonda, with one space seemingly left open—and it turns out Markle had an inspired reason for that.

“The sixteenth space on the cover, a mirror, was included so that when you hold the issue in your hands, you see yourself as part of this collective,” the caption for @royalsussex’s Instagram announcement reads.

The royal family also released another photo of Markle, who looks to be hard at work on the issue (and also very chic in her tweed Gucci dress).

This Bride Held an Adults-Only Wedding—and Asked a Guest With Kids to Leave

A bride has started an intense debate on Reddit after having an adults-only wedding ceremony—and asking one guest who brought her children to leave.

The Knot first reported that an anonymous bride posted a recap of her wedding-day drama on Reddit’s “Am I the Asshole?” thread. In her post, the bride said that she and her husband-to-be wanted a child-free event—and had requested an adults-only wedding on their invitations—but ran into some trouble when a guest brought her two kids, a toddler and a baby.

The bride says she allowed the children and their parents to stay through the ceremony but asked her wedding planner to confront the family at the reception.“At the actual wedding ceremony, I let it slide. I was preoccupied for obvious reasons,” the bride wrote. “I also thought that maybe they planned not to attend the reception or to have someone pick the kids up before it started.”

That didn’t happen, so the bride says she decided to intervene: “My event planner went to talk to the couple. I could tell they were arguing with my event planner though so I went over to help him. I think they thought I came to rescue them because they started going on about how rude my event planner was. I explained that I had actually sent him over to discuss the children. I reiterated that the event was child-free and said that I had stated so clearly on my invitations.

“The wife gave a sort of apology and then assured me that they were capable of minding their own children to make sure they didn’t get in the way of anything. I said that wasn’t really the point,” she continued. “That’s when my now-husband comes over and he and the other woman’s husband begin going back and forth and things got a little heated.

“Finally I snapped and said that they just needed to go, which, thankfully they did without much more noise. Still, the whole scene was incredibly embarrassing which is exactly what I wanted to avoid.”

The bride reiterated that her invitations requested that the wedding be adults only. “To be clear, all of my invitations stated that there were to be no children at this wedding,” the bride said in her post. “But she and her husband showed up with their infant and toddler (who I think is like 3-4).”

“I really hate that my wedding day had to be somewhat marred by this incident. According to my mother, everyone was talking about it and I guess enjoying a little dramatic entertainment,” she said.

The bride’s post has since gone viral, racking up more than 1,500 comments since it was posted to Reddit three days ago.

“I’ve had wedding invites and save the dates that say ‘we love kids, but this is an adults-only affair.’ Easy and explicit without being rude,” one commenter said. “The assholes we’re [sic] the ones who brought their kids to an explicitly child-free event. And then caused a scene when they were asked to leave,” another wrote.

Some, however, thought she could have handled the situation differently—and the bride updated her original post to add that “a few family members felt it was inappropriate to kick out the couple.”

Her edit also addressed the comments that other Reddit users left on her post. “Thank you all so much for the feedback. What I’ve gotten from this is that most people think that the couple was rude,” she wrote. “The feedback here has helped me not to feel guilty about that and just realize that not everyone has the same ideas about tact and manners.”

You can read the bride’s entire saga on Reddit. But it’s ultimately a good reminder for anyone planning on going to a wedding: Read the invitation before bringing the whole family.

Black Actors Won All Four Guest Star Emmy Awards for the First Time

The 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony won’t be happening for another week, but four actors have already made history. They are Tiffany Haddish, Ron Cephas Jones, Samira Wiley, and Katt Williams, who swept the four guest actor categories during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday. In addition to this being all four actors’ first Emmy wins, according to CNN, this marks the first time all four awards have been won by black actors.

The best guest actor and actress in a comedy series awards went to Katt Williams for his role as Uncle Willie in Atlanta and Tiffany Haddish for her Saturday Night Live episode last November, respectively, according to Complex. Meanwhile, the corresponding drama awards went to Samira Wiley for her performance as Moira in The Handmaid’s Tale and Ron Cephas Jones as William in This Is Us, according to Deadline.

“I’d like to thank my higher power because without her I wouldn’t be here,” Wiley said during her acceptance speech, according to Deadline. She also thanked her wife, Lauren Morelli, who “every day shows me what real passion is for your work and every hour gives me a reason to bring it,” and gave a shout-out to costar Elisabeth Moss, a.k.a. “the most amazing scene partner a girl could ask for.”

Meanwhile, Cephas Jones thanked his daughter, agent, and This Is Us cast in his acceptance speech, as well as This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman “for giving me the opportunity and being in the room where it happens,” per Deadline. “God bless my mother,” he added. “I know you’re looking down on me.” According to Deadline, backstage, he talked about researching the works of August Wilson and James Baldwin to inspire his performance as William, whom he described as a “flawed man with a checkered past.” “It would have been difficult,” he said when asked if a character like William could have existed “years ago,” according to Deadline. “We are moving forward and moving ahead.”

According to Deadline, neither Haddish nor Williams were present to pick up their awards.

Hillary Clinton Makes Guest Appearance on The Daily Show's 'Song for Women 2017'

What a year. 2017 has been terrible, inspiring, sad, empowering and pretty much every emotion in between. And through it all, it’s been pretty important (aka a survival tactic) to keep a sense of humor even during dark times.

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah certainly helps and last night correspondents Dulcé Sloan and Desi Lydic released their collaboration “Song for Women 2017” to commemorate the year that was. Lydic’s character is a pretty on-the-nose portrayal of the type of white girl feminists that sometimes makes you cringe while Sloan appropriately shuts her down when necessary. The duo takes on everything from the women’s march (remember how great that was?) to Trump (“that pussy grabber with the terrible tan”) to the triumphs of Beyoncé, Elizabeth Warren, and ‘Wonder Woman’. “Who knew you could direct when you have boobies?”

Of course, the song gets interrupted by DJ Mansplain who tries unsuccessfully to take control of the narrative only to be shooed out of the recording booth. But there is one guest star on the track who totally steals the show—Hillary Rodham Clinton, who the duo brought in to add the perfect finishing touch to their viral hit.

I don’t know about you, but I still get a little choked up every time I see HRC making an appearance. I may or may not have openly wept watching her on Ellen last week. But while I long for what might have been, it does bring me joy to see her cutting loose, even if only to lip sync a cameo on a Daily Show parody tune. If she can still laugh, I can still laugh.

Hang in there, fellow women. Here’s hoping we tear the doors off this whole thing in 2018! Until then, “take us home” Hillary.
