This Social Distancing First Date Saga on Instagram Has the Internet Talking

In the era of social distancing, people are starting to get creative about how to maintain relationships…and even start new ones.

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic confines Americans to their homes, friends are doing virtual drinks via Zoom and Houseparty, families are hosting game nights online, and singletons are coming up with new ways to date. One Brooklyn man’s videos about a meet-cute with a woman who lives in the apartment building across the street are currently making the rounds on Instagram and TikTok.

Photographer Jeremy Cohen’s story began on Insta and (in true internet-savvy fashion) continued on his TikTok, a move that surely gave him a surge of new followers. He tells the story of how he saw a woman dancing on her roof and after waving hello, decided to send her his number via a drone.

Cohen says flirting is usually “daunting” for him, but because of the quarantine he was crazing social interaction and took a chance. “I can’t believe this actually worked and yes this is a real story,” he wrote in the video caption.

The move worked and he got a text back! “There’s going to be a part 2 in the next couple of days, add me on tiktok if you wanna see it ?link in bio?,” he added to the caption.

The New Yorkers then had a first date complete with tiny tables and tablecloths—and wine, of course. They FaceTimed from their respective buildings while Cohen documented it all. The photographer claims he tapped his date’s roommate to help set it up.

Next, he decided to make his biggest romantic gesture yet. He rolled over to her place in a giant plastic bubble so they could take a “walk” together. They were even stopped by cops who had seen their story on the news. (Side note: did he just…have that thing lying around?)

The Internet thinks this is just about the best meet-cute ever. “Fellas, we can no longer make excuses,” one Twitter user wrote. “Expectations have been raised.”

Of course, not everyone believes this love story is genuine.

Whether it’s a real rom-com in the making or not, we were fully entertained and will be anxiously awaiting part four.

Here Is the Full, Confusing Saga of Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson's Breakup

It was only last month that Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson were kicking it in their $16 million apartment surrounded by beanbags, baby pigs, and exactly zero forks. Now, however, both TMZ and People are reporting the couple has split after five months of dating—and four months of being engaged. Before you start listening to “Pete Davidson” on repeat in mourning, though, remember that Grande and Davidson haven’t confirmed this news yet; it’s possible they’re still together and just had a small argument about lollipops or something. Maybe Grande wanted Davidson to dye his hair back to brown and he said, “No, this platinum look is lit,” and that caused a brief tiff. We don’t know! All we know is breakup rumors are swirling.

But it’s a confusing timeline. Grande and Davidson were reportedly chummy as recent as Saturday (October 13), which makes this news all the more jarring. How did this couple go from gallivanting at furniture stores in fancy sweatpants to breaking up in such a short span? God is a woman, and she’s just as perplexed as we are. Here’s what we know so far:

September 29: Grande attends the premiere of Saturday Night Live. She was posting Instagram Stories backstage, according to Vanity Fair, and acting very much like she still dug Davidson and his penchant for the word sick.

October 9: Davidson covers up one of his Grande tattoos. Specifically, the “Dangerous Woman” bunny he had inked behind his ear. It seems he had a heart drawn over it instead, which is only a little bit ironic.

October 13: Grande is spotted backstage at Saturday Night Live again. Per the Daily Mail, they appeared so “in love.”

October 14: News breaks Grande and Davidson have split. Davidson deletes his Instagram, which isn’t all that surprising because he’s more hot-and-cold with that thing than I am with my gym membership. According to People, those close to Grande saw the split coming and deemed her relationship “too much too soon.” TMZ notes that the death of Grande’s ex-boyfriend Mac Miller might’ve been a “tipping point.” Us Weekly, however, contends the two just called their engagement off and are still working things out.

October 15: In a deflection attempt only theater nerds and gay men will appreciate, Grande posts about her involvement in the Wicked fifteenth anniversary special—her first social media post since the breakup rumors kicked off.

And that’s it for now, people. Knowing Grande and Davidson, though, it’s only a matter of time before we receive another update—most likely in all lowercase letters.

Here Is the Epic Saga of How 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Was Cancelled and Then Resurrected

If you’ve been on Twitter lately, it probably seems like Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the only TV show in 2018. Literally everyone is tweeting their excitement about the series being picked up for a sixth season.

But the show’s future wasn’t supposed to be this bright. The comedy, which centers around the…adventures? hijinks? escapades? of a Brooklyn police precinct was beloved by fans who gravitated to any and all of its ingredients: a diverse cast with strong doses of LGBTQ+ representation, a heaping helping of humor, and, like most comedies these days, a boldness to comment on social issues.

Alas, it was cancelled on Thursday by Fox, and a once-quiet cult following went into an overdrive panic, creating viral hashtags like #ByeBye99 and #Renew99 to beg someone—anyone!—to pick it back up again. Below, please enjoy the saga of Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s death and resurrection, told with extreme emotion by fans’ tweets. It’s a heartwarming reminder that sometimes good things do happen, even in 2018.

On Thursday, Fox announced that the show was cancelled.

Grieving fans began the #Renew99 hashtags, and turned out to Twitter in an outpouring of grief (and shade).

Many pointed out that in terms of representation, it was a rare bird in the TV landscape.

“#brooklyn99 is consistently funny, tackles current issues in complex, nuanced ways, has a cast that is MOSTLY people of color, has fully fleshed out characters, and one of the best coming out storylines in modern TV. It’s one of the few shows where I saw myself. #renew99,” one person wrote.

“You can’t talk about this show without talking about its cast. White leads were outnumbered. Two black men. Two Latina leads. Two queer mains. None of them stereotypes, all of them wonderful. A show that enthusiastically embraced kindness and was funny as HELL,” tweeted another.

Brooklyn Nine Nine, Lucifer, and The Mick showed that Latinos are more than stereotypes. We are detectives, scientists, proud members of the LGBTQ community, funny as hell (especially the females!) and even directors,” echoed someone else.

People embraced the “anger” stage of grieving.

Even Luke Skywalker was crying.

People outright begged, making extremely valid points.

As the hours wore on, fans moved into the “bargaining” stage.

The show was bargaining too: Rumor had it it was looking for a home elsewhere, but Netflix and Hulu had both passed (Hulu, remember, picked up The Mindy Project after Fox canceled it). Netflix had reportedly passed because of a rights issue with Hulu. Rights, schmights, am I right?

But then, in the late hours of Friday night, news broke that NBC had listened to the Interwebz. They had picked it up for 13 more episodes.

Everyone freaked out.

One user pointed out an uncanny plot parallel.

The cast and crew of the show went wild.

Behold, the power of Twitter.
