Katie Hill’s Resignation Speech Is Required Reading

Representative Katie Hill (D-Calif.) joined her colleagues at the House of Representatives this morning to cast her final vote as a member of the House of Representatives and deliver her last speech on the floor. This comes less than a week after Hill announced her resignation from Congress, following 10 months in office. Hill chose to step down from her position following the House Ethics Committee’s announcement that it would be looking into allegations that Hill had a sexual relationship with a member of her congressional staff.

While Hill denies having a relationship with a congressional staffer, she admitted that she’d had a relationship with a member of her campaign team. (House rules bar members of Congress from having sexual relationships with their aides, but not campaign staffers.)

But these allegations aren’t the reason Hill decided to resign. Within the past week, multiple nude photos of her were published online, without her consent. Hill has accused her estranged husband, Kenny Heslep, of running a smear campaign against her that included leaking the photographs. Hill’s supporters have called the images’ release revenge porn, which is illegal under California law. Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) echoed them, telling BuzzFeed that she believes Hill is a victim of “cyber exploitation.”

“It was clearly meant to embarrass her,” Harris said in the interview, of the photos’ release. “There’s so much that people do about women and their sexuality that’s about shaming them.”

Hill addressed all this and more from the floor. She first apologized to her family, constituents, women, and the queer community, saying, “For every little girl that looked up to me, I hope one day you can forgive me.” She then went on to discuss her decision to resign. As Hill explained, ”I am leaving now because of a double standard. I’m leaving because of a misogynistic culture that gleefully consumed my naked pictures, capitalized on my sexuality, and enabled my abusive ex to continue that abuse.” She also called their release the ”dirtiest gutter politics I’ve ever seen.”

She told her fellow members that this was first time she’d left her apartment since the images were published. And that she was told there would be more photos leaked out “bit by bit.”

“I’m scared,” she said. “[I] went to the darkest places that a mind can go.”

But Hill ended her speech with resolve: “I’m leaving, but we have men who have been credibly accused of intentional acts of sexual violence, and remain in boardrooms, on the Supreme Court, in this very body, and worst of all, in the Oval Office.” Her parting words were simple and to the point: “Thank you, and I will yield the balance of my time for now…but not forever.”

Meghan Markle Kicked Off Her Royal Tour of Southern Africa With a Powerful Speech

Long before she was the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle was a self-identified feminist and an activist for women’s rights. Since marrying Prince Harry and becoming a member of the royal family, she’s continued to champion causes around female empowerment, including her recent capsule fashion collection for Smart Works, an organization that helps dress and prepare women to re-enter the workforce.

So, it should come as no surprise that the duchess’s first speech during her latest royal tour of southern Africa touched on these issues. After arriving in Cape Town with baby Archie, she and Prince Harry made their way to the Nuyanga township where they were greeted with music and dancing by representatives of human rights group the Justice Desk.

Markle addressed the crowd, many of whom are doing important work to curb violence against women in their country.

“So to be able to meet all of you today who are standing up for what’s right in the face of adversity, I applaud you. We are encouraged to hear your president take the next steps toward preventing gender-based violence through education and necessary changes to reinforce the values of modern South Africa,” she said. “I do have to say I feel incredibly humbled to be in the presence of all of you as you stand firm in your core values of respect, dignity, and equality. I read a quote a few weeks ago and it resonated with me as I’ve been watching what’s been happening here and your active efforts. Maya Angelou, a legendary poet and civil rights activist, once said, ‘Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it, possibly without claiming it, she stands up for all women.'”

She continued, “Now I know it’s not easy and I know it must feel insurmountable at times, but your commitment wot what is right gives all of us hope, especially your brothers and sisters here in your community who need you to continue to shine your light brightly. Your commitment is inspiring. It is energizing. And it is extraordinary. You must keep going. You must know that what you are doing not only matters, it is vital because you are vital.”

Markle ended things with, “And just on one personal note, while I’m here with my husband as a member of the royal family. I want you to know, I am here with you as a mother, a wife, as a woman, as a woman of color and as your sister. I am here with you and I am here for you and I thank you so much for showing my husband and I the spirit of ubuntu. And I look forward to our time over the next few days together. Thank you so much for having us.”

Now, that’s one fantastic way to kick off a tour.

Read Every Word of Michelle Williams' Powerful Emmys Speech About Equal Pay

On Sunday, September 22, Michelle Williams won the Emmy for her performance of Gwen Verdon in the FX drama miniseries Fosse/Verdon. And once on stage to give her acceptance speech, she dedicated her time to a very important cause: equal pay.

“Thank you so much to the television academy for this and to the incredible cast and crew who have worked so hard to make this TV show, especially you Sam Rockwell. I know how hard you worked,” she began. “I see this as an acknowledgment of what is possible when a woman is trusted to discern her own needs, feel safe enough to voice them, and respected enough that they’ll be heard.”

Williams then explained that every time she asked for anything she needed in order to do her job—big or small—she heard “yes” in reply. “When I asked for more dance classes, I heard yes,” she said. “More voice lessons, yes. A different wig, a pair of fake teeth not made out of rubber, yes.”

She continued, “All of these things, they require effort and they cost more money. But my bosses never presumed to know better than I did about what I needed in order to do my job and honor Gwen Verdon.”

More important, they didn’t just support her with props and lessons. They supported her with equal pay.

“And so I want to say, thank you so much to FX and to Fox 21 studios for supporting me completely and for paying me equally because they understood that when you put value into a person it empowers that person to get in touch with their own inherent value. And then where do they put that value? They put it into their work,” she said. “And so the next time a woman and especially a woman of color—because she stands to make 52 cents on the dollar compared to her white, male counterpart—tells you what she needs in order to do her job listen to her. Believe her. Because one day she might stand in front of you and say thank you for allowing her to succeed because of her workplace environment and not in spite of it.”

She finished the speech with a shoutout to her daughter. “Matilda, this is for you, like everything else.”

Fans quickly took to social media to share their praise for Williams’ speech.

“That Michelle Williams speech belongs on a plaque,” one tweeted. “Michelle Williams thank you for acknowledging that there is a far greater wage gap for women of color than literally everyone else including white women,” another noted.

Celebrities including Kerry Washington and Debra Messing also took to Twitter to celebrate Williams.

Fans also called out how supportive Williams’ best friend, Busy Phillips, was during the speech:

Backstage, Williams spoke out more about equal pay. “I’d know from the inside how difficult it was to feel like you were ever really getting ahead. And no matter how many accolades [I got], I couldn’t make it translate into long-term security, so the discrepancy with All the Money in the World illustrated not just a larger point for me, a woman of privilege, but how difficult it is for women of all [backgrounds],” she told press. “When you look at all numbers, 52% on the dollar is what a hispanic woman will make compared to a white male.”

For the record, Williams is spot on with her speech. August 21 marks Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, the point in the year when the average black woman’s wages finally equal what a white man earned the year before. It’s time we all start talking more about pay disparity—on the Emmys stage and off.

Oscars 2019: Everyone Can Relate to Olivia Colman's Best Actress Acceptance Speech

Best Actress is one of the most coveted titles to take home from the Academy Awards. And at the Oscars 2019, that honor went to Olivia Colman for her performance in The Favourite from a competitive group that included A Star Is Born‘s Lady Gaga and awards-season favorite Glenn Close of The Wife. Colman accepted her award with a speech that revealed how shocked she was to win the award—and the Internet is loving it.

Colman opened her acceptance speech for portraying Queen Anne of England with a stunned quote: “This is hilarious,” she said. In her brief but wide-ranging speech, she went on to thank many people (including: her husband, her children, and her costars) while repeating that she found her win quite “funny.”

The speech ranged from inspiring (“Any little girl who’s practicing her speech on the tele—you never know!”) to hysterical (“If I forget anybody, I’ll find you later and give you a massive snog”), all in a matter of minutes. Colman didn’t seem to expect her win, and it was a sight to behold. (You can view the entire speech on Twitter.)

And, in an iconic conclusion, she closed her speech by blowing a kiss to Lady Gaga in the front row.

The speech was off-the-cuff, shell-shocked, and incredibly charming. Naturally, the Internet had a lot to say about the “delightful” moment and the performance that earned it.

Some asked for more projects where Colman gives a speech, just because her surprised reaction to winning Best Actress felt so relatable.

Others loved that she gave a heartfelt call out to her fellow nominees, Lady Gaga in particular.

She may be an Academy Award winner, but make no mistake: under pressure, “Olivia Colman is all of us.”

Beyoncé and Jay Z Used Meghan Markle's Portrait as the Backdrop of Their Brit Awards Speech

To the public’s knowledge, Beyoncé and Jay Z and Meghan Markle have yet to come into contact with one another. But that doesn’t mean there’s any less love between them. The Carters gave their stamp of approval to the Duchess of Sussex in a surprising way when they made a cameo at the 2019 Brit Awards. Well, technically the awards show only featured a video of them, as they weren’t in attendance. But when the video played, Markle was at the center of it.

After the Carters were announced as the winner for Best International Group, Beyoncé and Jay Z gave their thanks in a pre-recorded video message that was shot in front of a portrait of Markle. The clip plays like a riff on their “Apesh*t” video, from Jay Z wearing a similar double-breasted blazer and Beyoncé wearing a vibrant suit blazer without a shirt like they both did in the original to the way the camera pans out on them standing still in front of the portrait — in place of the Mona Lisa — while their Everything Is Love standout plays. In the portrait, Markle isn’t just a glowing royal; she looks to be an actual queen, which is quite the compliment from one queen to another.

In their speech, Bey and Jay didn’t acknowledge the painting, which made it all the more surreal. Instead they gave a rather boilerplate speech, with Bey saying, “Thank you so much to the Brit Awards for this incredible honour. You guys have always been so supportive. Everything is love. Thank you,” to which Jay jokingly added, “You’re Welcome.” The pair then turn their backs to the camera and face the portrait of Markle. All the while, in the background, you can hear what is most likely Blue Ivy’s voice.

The painting of Markle has a surprising origin. It was created by artist Tim O’Brien for the alumni magazine of Markle’s former sorority Kappa Kappa Gama. O’Brien acknowledged that his painting has now been immortalized by the Carters on Twitter, where he wrote, “Interesting to see my painting of Megan Markle behind @Beyonce and JZ for their Brit award. Congratulations to them both.”

Meanwhile, Beyoncé explained why they chose to use the painting as a backdrop, later on Instagram, writing, “Thank you to the Brits for the award for Best International Group. I won this award back in 2002 with my besties, Kelly and Michelle. How lucky am I to have been in a group with my other best friend, the GOAT Hova. ?? In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas. Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy.”

Hopefully, for both parties (and their voracious fans), this culminates in a real-life meeting.

Grammys 2019: Lady Gaga's Acceptance Speech Addresses Mental Health

Lady Gaga took home took home the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born at the 2019 Grammys on Sunday night (February 10), and she used her speech as an opportunity to talk about mental health and the importance of reaching out for help.

“I’m so proud to be a part of a movie that addresses mental health issues,” Gaga said. “They’re so important. And a lot of artists deal with that, and we’ve got to take care of each other. So if you see somebody that’s hurting don’t look away. And if you’re hurting, even though it might be hard, try to find that bravery within yourself to dive deep and go tell somebody and take them up in your head with you.”

Watch Lady Gaga‘s speech for yourself, below:

Fans took to Twitter to applaud Gaga for her candor:

Gaga has been quite open about her struggles with mental health. “One in four of us will have to deal with a mental health condition at some point in our lives, and if we’re not directly affected, someone we care for is likely to be,” Gaga and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization, wrote in an essay for The Guardian back in October 2018 . “Yet despite the universality of the issue, we struggle to talk about it openly or to offer adequate care or resources. Within families and communities, we often remain silenced by a shame that tells us that those with mental illness are somehow less worthy or at fault for their own suffering.”

Gaga’s already won three Grammys this evening, two for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born and one for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?).” “I’m not gonna be able to wear any makeup tonight,” she wrote in an emotional tweet celebrating her wins. A star really is born.
