Meghan Markle Kicked Off Her Royal Tour of Southern Africa With a Powerful Speech

Long before she was the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle was a self-identified feminist and an activist for women’s rights. Since marrying Prince Harry and becoming a member of the royal family, she’s continued to champion causes around female empowerment, including her recent capsule fashion collection for Smart Works, an organization that helps dress and prepare women to re-enter the workforce.

So, it should come as no surprise that the duchess’s first speech during her latest royal tour of southern Africa touched on these issues. After arriving in Cape Town with baby Archie, she and Prince Harry made their way to the Nuyanga township where they were greeted with music and dancing by representatives of human rights group the Justice Desk.

Markle addressed the crowd, many of whom are doing important work to curb violence against women in their country.

“So to be able to meet all of you today who are standing up for what’s right in the face of adversity, I applaud you. We are encouraged to hear your president take the next steps toward preventing gender-based violence through education and necessary changes to reinforce the values of modern South Africa,” she said. “I do have to say I feel incredibly humbled to be in the presence of all of you as you stand firm in your core values of respect, dignity, and equality. I read a quote a few weeks ago and it resonated with me as I’ve been watching what’s been happening here and your active efforts. Maya Angelou, a legendary poet and civil rights activist, once said, ‘Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it, possibly without claiming it, she stands up for all women.'”

She continued, “Now I know it’s not easy and I know it must feel insurmountable at times, but your commitment wot what is right gives all of us hope, especially your brothers and sisters here in your community who need you to continue to shine your light brightly. Your commitment is inspiring. It is energizing. And it is extraordinary. You must keep going. You must know that what you are doing not only matters, it is vital because you are vital.”

Markle ended things with, “And just on one personal note, while I’m here with my husband as a member of the royal family. I want you to know, I am here with you as a mother, a wife, as a woman, as a woman of color and as your sister. I am here with you and I am here for you and I thank you so much for showing my husband and I the spirit of ubuntu. And I look forward to our time over the next few days together. Thank you so much for having us.”

Now, that’s one fantastic way to kick off a tour.

American Airlines Almost Kicked a Woman Off a Plane for Wearing a Romper

American Airlines has faced some egregious controversies in the past, but this one is perhaps the most absurd: On June 30, a doctor from Texas named Tisha Rowe was ordered off a plane and allowed back on only after she agreed to cover herself with a blanket. Her offense? She was dressed in a romper.

Rowe, who is African American and Caribbean American, described the incident both on social media and in a recent interview with the New York Times, explaining that she feels her race was a factor. She told the Times that she had boarded her flight from Jamaica to Miami with her eight-year-old son when a flight attendant asked her to come to the front of the plane.

“She poses the question to me, ‘Do you have a jacket?’” Rowe explained. “I said, ‘No, I do not.’ I’ve been given no explanation as to why I was taken off the plane. So finally she says, ‘You’re not boarding the plane dressed like that.’ Then they started to give me a lecture about how when I got on the plane, I better not make a scene or be loud.”

Rowe shared photos of her outfit on Twitter. Social media users quickly agreed that there was nothing wrong with it, especially given that she was on a hot summer vacation. (As the Times points out, on the day this happened, there was a high of 94 degrees in Jamaica and a high of 89 in Miami.)

An airline policing what women wear is ludicrous, but the situation is even more frustrating in light of how ambiguous the airline’s stated conditions of carriage are. Online it includes a brief reference to dress code that read, “Dress appropriately; bare feet or offensive clothing aren’t allowed.” Rowe’s outfit contains no “offensive” or symbols, and it’s unclear what’s so inappropriate about a summer romper in the heat. Moreover, it seems enforcement of the airline’s policies is a matter left to the discretion of flight attendants, which leaves a lot of room for bias.

“Had they seen that same issue in a woman who was not a woman of color, they would not have felt empowered to take me off the plane,” Rowe told the Times. “In pop culture, especially black women with a body like mine, they’re often portrayed as video vixens. So I’ve had to deal with those stereotypes my whole life.”

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas' Wedding Festivities Have Officially Kicked Off

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ wedding festivities have officially started. The couple was photographed in India Wednesday (November 28) during their puja ceremony, which is a Hindu prayer ritual. The event took place at Chopra’s mother’s home in Mumbai, and both Jonas and Chopra wore traditional Indian outfits for the occasion. Jonas wore a light pink kutra and cream-colored pants, while Chopra opted for a powder blue and cream Indian suit. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner were in attendance, as well, and they also wore formal Indian ensembles.

This is just the beginning of what’s to come. According to India Today, Chopra will have her sangeet and mehendi ceremonies on Thursday at Umaid Bhawan Palace, which is their wedding venue. (A sangeet ceremony is a celebration that includes music and singing, while mehendi is a form of Indian body art.)

Back-to-back Hindu and Christian wedding ceremonies are reportedly happening on December 2, according to DNA India. “The Christian ceremony will happen first, after which Nickyanka will change their outfits and get ready for the Hindu nuptials,” a source explains. “Their outfits are color-coordinated.”

Check out a photo of Jonas and Chopra at the puja for yourself, below:

“I’m excited. It’s a very different feeling,” Chopra told E! News a few weeks back when explaining the difference between dating and engaged life. “I never realized that having a boyfriend and having a fiancé are completely different.” She added, “It just feels different. There’s gravitas. You feel like family, which is just so different.”

She added, “We’ve known each other for a couple of years but we dated for just a little while, but I think that’s the one thing we really connect on, is our love for family and knowing faith is so important to us.”

Blake Lively Kicked Off Her 31st Birthday by Utterly Demolishing a Box of Cupcakes

Whether it’s a trolling contest with husband Ryan Reynolds or a day of outfit changes, Blake Lively always goes all out. For her 31st birthday on Saturday (August 25), she celebrated in a reliably over-the-top way: The actress and fashion icon consumed the best part of a dozen cupcakes, possibly by herself.

On the morning of her birthday, Lively hopped on Instagram Stories to share a photo of a dozen cupcakes from Sprinkles, a celeb-favorite cupcake outpost based in Beverly Hills. “Thank you, @sprinklescupcakes!” she captioned a photo of some admittedly delicious-looking cupcakes that spelled out “Happy Birthday Blake!”

PHOTO: Instagram @blakelively

Minutes later, Lively posted an after shot of her Sprinkles box. Where, just moments before, followers could once see a full box of cupcakes, there was utter wreckage: not a whole cupcake in sight.

She captioned the picture with a cheeky update: “Worked it,” she wrote.

We’ve got to hand it to Lively: There’s no better way to kick off a birthday morning than with a box of wonderful baked goods. We can’t say for certain whether Lively actually demolished the entire box on her own—she has Reynolds and their children to help out, after all—but we wouldn’t blame her if she did: Cupcakes are delicious, and, after all, it was her birthday!

This complete annihilation is just the latest entry in Lively’s history of social media shenanigans on her birthday. Last year, the actress celebrated her 30th birthday with a large dinner. But in signature Blake Lively fashion, she had a hilarious comment to mark the occasion: “My super sweet 16. …but like 14 years late,” she wrote.

Lively was otherwise pretty quiet on her social media accounts during her birthday celebrations this year—but we’ll be keeping our eyes out to see if Reynolds has any birthday wishes to extend—or if he just continues the wonderful tradition that is their birthday-related Instagram trolling.

Taylor Swift Just Kicked Off Pride Month in Chicago With an Incredibly Powerful Speech

June kicks off Pride Month in many cities around the world—and Taylor Swift was on hand in Chicago to get it going at her concert on Saturday night. Right before she launched into her song “Delicate,” the singer gave an emotional speech to the crowd that was dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community.

“It’s very brave to be vulnerable about your feelings in any situation, but it’s even more brave to be honest about your feelings and who you love when you know that it might be met with adversity from society,” she said while wearing a rainbow dress.

“This month and every month I want to send my love and respect to everybody who has been brave enough to be honest about how they feel, to live their lives as they are, as they feel they should be, as they identify,” Swift added.

“This is a month where I think we need to celebrate how far we’ve come, but I think we also need to acknowledge how far we have left to go. I want to send my love and respect to everybody who hasn’t felt comfortable enough to come out yet … and may you do that on your own time and may we end up in a world where everyone can live and love equally and no one has to be afraid to all say how they feel,” she continued.

“When it comes to feelings and when it comes to love and searching for someone to spend your whole life with… it’s all just really, really delicate,” Swift closed. “You know?”

You can imagine where it went from there. Fans loved it too:
