Katie Holmes Just Explained That Viral Cashmere Bra Moment

Back in August 2019, Katie Holmes’s outfit of the day went totally viral. Who can forget the matching cashmere bra and sweater set she was photographed wearing while going about her day in New York City?

It was pure luxury, but the look also had a cool sexiness thanks to the way the slouchy sweater hung off of her shoulder. The internet went wild for it—but given how private Holmes is, we thought we’d never learn what she was thinking when she got dressed that morning. Thanks to a new interview with InStyle to promote her new film The Secret: Dare to Dream, we finally have some answers to all our burning cashmere bra questions.

When asked about the fashion moment she’s having right now, Holmes jokingly told the magazine, “I have been in this business for quite some time. We both know you have ups and downs. It’s been a really exciting time because of the cashmere bra.”

But when pushed further as to why she chose that $520 Khaite bra and $1,540 sweater combo (which sold out quickly after she wore it), Holmes had a pretty relatable response. “Honestly, I wasn’t feeling so sexy. And I saw that and was like, ‘Sexy. I can do that!’ I thought it would be good if I was in a cabin sitting by the fire and wore the [matching] sweater over it,” she said. “That’s how my brain works. But then I was like, ‘Oh, wait, I’m not in a cabin, and I’m not going to a cabin.’ I still thought I could pull it off, though. I had noticed other people wearing bras with blazers.”

As for the perfect positioning of the sweater? We can blame Katie Holmes’s daughter Suri for that. “I didn’t want to get into trouble with my teenager! We were school shopping, and I was just trying to hail a cab on Sixth Avenue,” she said, laughing. “It looked way more glamorous than it was.”

Can’t wait for your next viral fashion moment, KH!

Katie Holmes Shared Unretouched Photos on Instagram Showing Off Her Stretch Marks

It’s hard to go even a day without seeing a story about Katie Holmes’s on-point street style, full of fashionable fall jackets, chic sweaters and perfectly-styled evening wear. But now the actress is making headlines for something else she’s wearing amazingly well: her stretch marks.

Earlier this week, the 40-year-old took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes pics from Vogue Australia that clearly show off the stretch marks on her stomach. Fans were quick to praise the actress for posting the unedited photos, proudly flaunting the lines that peaked out behind her blazer and black bra.

“#Bts @vogueaustralia ??? it is wonderful to be working today with such amazing women!” Holmes captioned the two pictures, in which she sports slicked-back wet hair, natural makeup and gold earrings. The pictures are by far some of the most popular in her feed, amassing almost 80,000 likes since it was shared.

Several of Holmes’s followers commented on the pics, thanking her for being real about her body on social media. “Just seeing this made me cry because it means so much to show the beauty of your natural body,” one person wrote. “I’ve always had issues showing my marks as a mother of three. Seeing this gives me strength.”

Another added: “Thank you, you’ve made me feel so much better about my stretch marks, which I am always down on myself about!!! You are truly an inspiration.”

“Stunning… untouched…awesome example for our young girls growing up having to see so many retouched photos and unnatural bodies,” another fan noted.

Many others applauded the actress for showing the honest side of pregnancy. (Holmes has a 13-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise.) “Wow such a beautiful woman you are, Katie. You’ve made a statement to all us woman out there who struggle with pregnancy stretch marks. Thank you for presenting your all-natural self,” one fan penned.

Holmes is the latest in a slew of inspirational famous women, including Ashley Graham, Chrissy Teigen and Hilary Duff, who are fighting back at beauty standards by sharing their perceived “flaws,” from cellulite to leg hair to acne, on social media. It’s much-needed proof that there’s no such thing, even in Hollywood, as the perfect body.

Katie Hill’s Resignation Speech Is Required Reading

Representative Katie Hill (D-Calif.) joined her colleagues at the House of Representatives this morning to cast her final vote as a member of the House of Representatives and deliver her last speech on the floor. This comes less than a week after Hill announced her resignation from Congress, following 10 months in office. Hill chose to step down from her position following the House Ethics Committee’s announcement that it would be looking into allegations that Hill had a sexual relationship with a member of her congressional staff.

While Hill denies having a relationship with a congressional staffer, she admitted that she’d had a relationship with a member of her campaign team. (House rules bar members of Congress from having sexual relationships with their aides, but not campaign staffers.)

But these allegations aren’t the reason Hill decided to resign. Within the past week, multiple nude photos of her were published online, without her consent. Hill has accused her estranged husband, Kenny Heslep, of running a smear campaign against her that included leaking the photographs. Hill’s supporters have called the images’ release revenge porn, which is illegal under California law. Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) echoed them, telling BuzzFeed that she believes Hill is a victim of “cyber exploitation.”

“It was clearly meant to embarrass her,” Harris said in the interview, of the photos’ release. “There’s so much that people do about women and their sexuality that’s about shaming them.”

Hill addressed all this and more from the floor. She first apologized to her family, constituents, women, and the queer community, saying, “For every little girl that looked up to me, I hope one day you can forgive me.” She then went on to discuss her decision to resign. As Hill explained, ”I am leaving now because of a double standard. I’m leaving because of a misogynistic culture that gleefully consumed my naked pictures, capitalized on my sexuality, and enabled my abusive ex to continue that abuse.” She also called their release the ”dirtiest gutter politics I’ve ever seen.”

She told her fellow members that this was first time she’d left her apartment since the images were published. And that she was told there would be more photos leaked out “bit by bit.”

“I’m scared,” she said. “[I] went to the darkest places that a mind can go.”

But Hill ended her speech with resolve: “I’m leaving, but we have men who have been credibly accused of intentional acts of sexual violence, and remain in boardrooms, on the Supreme Court, in this very body, and worst of all, in the Oval Office.” Her parting words were simple and to the point: “Thank you, and I will yield the balance of my time for now…but not forever.”

Katie Holmes Is a Whole Fall Fashion Mood

We’ve all seen, or have lived through, the old go-through-a-breakup-and-get-a-risky-haircut move. But heading into fall 2019, Katie Holmes is embodying whatever the opposite of that tired cliché is. And a viral cashmere bra is really just the start.

A few weeks ago, just as the weather in New York dipped to a mild 70-something degrees, Holmes caused an all-out frenzy when images of her hailing a taxi in a matching cashmere bra-and-cardigan set went viral. Instagram comments flooded with support, headlines praised the unexpected look, and Holmes’ $520 Khaite bra sold out (along with its coordinating $1540 sweater). Like that, a barley-colored knit was the sexiest piece of news—not her relationship status.

But in taking a closer look at Holmes’ looks over the past several weeks, it becomes clear that the nonchalant confidence a knit bra conjures is not something the actress suddenly decided to try out, like bangs or balayage: She’s been living it. We’re talking bright Gucci logos, super oversized jackets, and subtly-glamorous T-shirt looks that embody an entire fall attitude. It’s one that honors our Hot Girl Summers and our love of all things cozy, layered all at once. Really, what more could one ask for fall? Behold some of her best recent looks, below.

Vanderpump Rules' Stassi, Katie, and Kristen Made a Rosé That's as Easy as 'Drinking Water'

“I don’t know if people know or realize that we—Katie, Stassi, and I—had full creative control,” Kristen says. “Not only over using the wine and the wine’s taste, but the actual label. We created that completely from scratch on our own.”

“I think people are often very surprised by how good it is,” Katie adds. “And that was very important to us because we don’t drink shitty wine.”

“Well, we used to,” Stassi says.

So considering this wine is meant to be enjoyed at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I wanted Katie, Kristen, and Stassi to tell me their tips and tricks for all-day drinking—and the next day hangover. See their advice, below.

Plan the right environment.

A theme is always a good idea for a summer party, Kristen advises, but make sure you schedule an end time for the event. “I think what’s really important is that you have a cutoff time, if you’re having people over, for your guests to leave so you can unwind and drink wine alone with your TV,” Kristen explains. “That’s really important.”

She suggests wine pong as an activity, though Katie and Stassi aren’t big on drinking games with their rosé. “I just need to enjoy my wine,” Stassi says. “Yeah,” Katie adds, “I guess my only game would be, like, drink this glass of wine before the ice melts.”

Don’t stray from the rosé—and eat lots of carbs.

But if this wine is meant to be consumed all day long, how does you keep from going too hard too soon? “Stick to the same thing,” Stassi says. “If you’re gonna commit to day drinking it’s best to drink the same thing, [so we wanted] a rosé that’s really easy that people aren’t going to get sick of.”

“Also, you don’t have to be ashamed of adding a little club soda to make a little spritzer,” Katie says. Adds Kristen, “We’re not against icing your wine either!”

The women also advise adding water and food into the equation, especially “carbs” or their favorite, Taco Bell. (Speaking of which, they recommend pairing Potion Two with a Doritos Loco Taco, Chalupa Supreme, or “anything with the nacho cheese.”)

Maybeee don’t drink more than two and a half bottles.

The three famously have alter egos—The Dark Passenger, Crazy Kristen, and Tequila Katie—that emerge after one too many drinks. They’re the kind of creatures you might buy a crystal to ward yourself against: They throw their phone on the ground and cry because their boyfriend won’t come to bed. They fall dramatically in the middle of a hotel lobby. They send rage texts from an airline’s economy seat.

When I ask how much rosé it’d take to bring these … powerful beings to the forefront, the women agree it’s probably around two and a half bottles. “It depends on if you’re in the sun all day, because if you are, the Dark Passenger, Tequila Katie, and Crazy Kristen come out a lot quicker with a minimal amount of alcohol,” Stassi says.

“I would say it’s like waking up in the morning in a really great mood, and you’re like, ‘Yeah, let’s get this!’ You know? You have a little breakfast, and you’re like I’m gonna have a little beverage cocktail. Then you’re going to hang out by the pool all day with your friends and drink. And then around, like, 6:00 p.m. that’s when things get dark,” Katie says.

Adds Kristen, “I don’t blame that on alcohol, I blame that on dehydration. What I like about our wine is that it doesn’t bring out crazy Kristen.”

How Katie Sturino Turned Divorce Weight Gain Into a Thriving Business

When I was married, I was very concerned about my body. I was obsessed with maintaining a size 12, or staying close to it. Then, about three years ago, I got separated and I gained a bunch of weight. At first I didn’t even realize I was putting it on. I was working out, but it just kept happening. In total, I ended up gaining about 60 pounds. I became a size 16, which I still am, and a surprising thing happened—I really loved my body.

At first I felt vulnerable. Especially when I started dating. I’d been out of the game for a long time and I just kept thinking, “nobody is ever going to love me ever again.” But I forced myself to do it, and I remember meeting this one guy for a drink. We went to a bar and I only stayed for a half hour or so, but I’ll never forget him telling me how beautiful I was. It was like he couldn’t get over me. Now, I don’t think that your self-worth should come from men whatsoever, but this was an area of my life where I didn’t have much confidence. And to all of a sudden have that outward validation pushed me to think, “Oh, maybe I am good looking.”

So I started wearing clothes that I never felt comfortable enough to wear, like jean shorts. I never would’ve worn them before because I would’ve thought, “I look stupid,” or “I can’t pull them off.” Flash forward, and I’m literally wearing black jean shorts with a button down shirt tucked into them right now—and I look awesome. When I was married I don’t think I would’ve worn any of the things I do now, or at least with the same confidence, even though I was two sizes smaller then.

I channeled this love for my new look into The 12ish Style, my blog that’s all about being chic at any size. I’d launched it while I was still married, but I wasn’t really taking it seriously. Then as soon as I got divorced I had nothing but this panic energy, where I was waking up at 4:30 or 5 every morning ready to go. So I was like “we need to put some real work into this.” I signed a manager, an agent, I started writing more, and hired a real photographer.

Around this time former Real Housewives star Carole Radziwill, who lost her husband at a young age, said something to me at a Christmas party that always stuck with me. She told me, “ride the horse in the direction that it’s going.” To me it meant, you can find strength in these moments where you think your life is over. You can’t change what has happened to you, so just go where the energy is good.

So The 12ish became my escape. I put everything into it. I took all the pain, anxiety, and uncertainty and pushed it toward something I felt passionate about. It blew up really fast and each day I’d talk to women on the platform who had changed their opinion about themselves because of it. They’d tell me stories about learning to love their bodies in a bathing suit, or just finally being able to accept themselves. It felt amazing and I really credit it with helping me get through my divorce. It wasn’t that I was specifically addressing relationships or my marriage on there, but to just suddenly have such a positive online community felt fucking amazing.

It was like all of a sudden I hit a point where I just stopped caring so much. During my marriage I spent so much time worrying about everything, but then the relationship ended, and it didn’t matter. My fear of having something to lose was gone, and I kind of said, “fuck it.” I was gonna wear jean shorts if I wanted to, embrace my body, and open myself up to men who thought I was beautiful.

Now, when I look back at pictures of myself from five years ago I don’t think “I look so skinny,” or “I look so young.” I think, I look so unhappy. I look at my eyes and smile and everything feels strained and forced. When I see a picture of myself now I look at such a joyful person, and falling in love with my body gave me that happiness.

For me, if I can inspire one woman or one man who has gained weight during their divorce to look at themselves and think, “this will not make me hate my body,” then it will all have been worth it. I want people to know, this isn’t your body’s fault, and it’s not because you’re not in shape. We’re so quick to blame our bodies or our physical appearance, instead of celebrating ourselves in all forms.

And one day maybe I’ll lose the weight, or maybe I won’t. If I ever did, it wouldn’t be because I don’t like the way I look, it would only be if the doctors told me some shit in my body is breaking down. Then ok, I got it, cool. But aesthetically and image-wise? I’ve never felt better.
