Sparkly Barrettes, Leopard Pants, and Other Fall 2018 Non-Essentials I *Absolutely* Need

Seasonal fashion guides tend to focus on “essentials,” pieces that have longevity, are trend-agnostic, and are considered to be worth spending money on because of the wear you’ll get out of them. For fall, that means the black ankle boots, the camel coat, the thick-knit sweater… All really useful parts of any wardrobe, but not particularly fun to shop for. As satisfying as it is to take those purchases out of the bag/box/envelope they came in and wear them out for the first time, there’s a unique thrill to those non-essentials you see all over Instagram, street style, or on that one very well-dressed neighbor of yours—oversized jelly hoops, a slick coated trench, rhinestone barrettes. Could you get through the season without them? Yes, absolutely. But can you also convince yourself that fall dressing will feel that much more fun if you throw leopard-print trousers into the mix? Also yes.

Ahead, check out 20 of these fall non-essentials I nonetheless want in my life for the cold months.

19 Best Glitter Nail Polishes for a Sparkly Holiday Season

Humanity’s interest in all things sparkly may go up tenfold during the holiday season, but unlike our neighbor’s Christmas lights, glittery nails won’t look out of place a few months from now. Twinkly polish takes any party look up a notch this time of year, but we’re the first ones to advocate for some OTT fingertips on a random day in March, too. Shimmery shades also have another distinct advantage: they’re beyond easy to apply and touch up, so even die-hard salon manicure devotees can manage at home without disastrous results, and if they chip, it’s usually barely noticeable. This winter, go for a classic metallic like gold or silver, pair a festive red with a plush velvet dress, or indulge your inner six-year-old with sparkly pink or electric blue. That way, next time you’re feeling a little Grinch-like—such as, say, when your flight home is delayed for the third time—at least your nails will be in the holiday spirit. Shop 19 of our most-wanted glitter polishes below.

Dewan Tatum Wore a Sparkly Naked Dress to the 2017 American Music Awards

If KiraKira is looking for a spokesperson, Jenna Dewan Tatum should be at the top of its list. On Sunday night, rather than just wearing her already glittery dress as-is on the 2017 AMAs red carpet, the dancer and actress upped her game with the help of the sparkle-boosting app.

Dewan Tatum shared a video from her car on the way to the awards show on Instagram in which she shows off her OTT look: a nude gown featuring a plunging V-neck and a long, trailing train and covered in sparkly silver stripes, which she further blinged out by applying the KiraKira filter. “Literally waited all year for the right dress to use KiraKira with. Thank you @amas, thank you,” the World of Dance judge captioned the video, which ends with her blowing a kiss to the camera while her eyes and earrings also fill with sparkles.

The actress is a pro at naked dresses, having previously worn a sheer showstopper to the premiere of Kingsman: The Golden Circle. And despite not having used KiraKira on a dress before, Dewan Tatum has definitely had some fun with the app, previously using it to document a pair of boots gifted to her from Jennifer Lopez.

Although Dewan Tatum appeared to attend the AMAs sans husband Channing Tatum, she shared a few photos to her Instagram Stories earlier in the day showing that she prepped for the show with their four-year-old daughter, Everly. In one, the mother-daughter duo relax in bed, with Everly resting her head on her robe-clad mom’s shoulder. “AMAs pre show,” Dewan Tatum captioned the sweet pic. In another, Everly plays with a NARS makeup palette while her mom gets glammed up.

Dewan Tatum also shared another video from the car on the way to the event on her Story, in which her driver gives her some excellent advice: “Relax, stay grounded, and be you, because being you is really what people love,” he says, before the Step Up star replies, “Preach, Leslie.”

Clearly, even stars like Jenna Dewan Tatum need the occasional pre-show pep talk and selfie.
