19 Best Glitter French Manicure Ideas for 2020

Despite the fact that we just entered 2020, by looking at the current trends I could swear we’re back in 2005. Bella Hadid is reviving low-rise pants (along with Louis Vuitton logo tops), lip gloss is back, and Paris Hilton is in the news again thanks to the best cooking video I’ve ever seen. The early-aughts aesthetic may be divisive, but there’s no arguing history is repeating itself.

In beauty, it’s been most obvious with the return of the French mani. The look more or less disappeared into oblivion after the turn of the decade (the 2010s, not the one that just happened), becoming a distant memory of spring fling dances past. But over the last year, it slowly began to re-emerge on an influencer here, a celeb there (both Kim Kardashian and Bella Hadid were early adopters), until it was everywhere. From awards show red carpets to backstage at fashion week, it’s not a major event now if there isn’t a French mani present.

I for one love the look. It’s classic and slightly tacky at the same time, which happens to be a perfect summary of my personal style. And when done with a more modern rounded tip it makes nails look long and elegant. But I understand that the look may be too closely tied to horrible spray tans and over-teased hair poufs to even consider trying. That’s where the many variations on French tips come in that make the look feel fresh and modern.

The coolest of the moment? The glitter French manicure, which as the name plainly states is a French manicure with glitter. Depending on your preference, this can mean a base of glitter with a colorful tip or a simple base with a glitter tip. Either way, it’s an easy trick to add sparkle to your nails while still looking grown-up; plus, it looks excellent peeking out of sweater sleeves this time of year. And unlike the classic white and baby pink look, adding some extra dimension plants the trend firmly in 2020. If you need more convincing, scroll on for some of the coolest glitter French manicure ideas on Instagram.

Glitter Base

A thin coat of glitter paired with a colorful tip is equal parts ethereal and high-fashion.

Glitter Tips

A bold coat of glitter (or crystals! or sequins!) in gold or silver gives a French mani a modern touch.

Diffused Glitter

For a French-but-not-quite manicure, diffuse your glitter down the nail for a softer look.

Michelle Obama Balenciaga Glitter Boots: Affordable Options and More

I have never written a book. I have decided, however, that if I ever do write a book, I’d like to dress like Michelle Obama has been while promoting her memoir. On the latest stop of her book tour, Obama appeared onstage with Sarah Jessica Parker in Brooklyn, New York wearing the most glorious glitter boots I’d ever laid my eyes upon.

I had heard about these boots from Cardi B. rap about them—you know, those Balenciagas, the ones that look like socks). But the ones Obama wore on Wednesday night were even more spectacular than I could ever have imagined. I asked myself why I didn’t own the exact same boots. The answer: Because they’re $4,000..

The unfortunate truth is you can spend none or all of the dollars and still not look as incredible as Michelle Obama did, in her full Balenciaga ensemble. You can, however, cop her footwear game—and for a lot less than $4K.

I’m sure I’m not the only one out there with a sudden desire for a pair of glittery knee-high boots. I want to wear them to work, to my next holiday party, to the supermarket—literally, anywhere and everywhere. It’s what Michelle Obama would want. Right? So, make her proud with one of the alternatives in the gallery ahead.

Michelle Obama's Balenciaga Boots Are $4,000 of Glitter Goodness

Michelle Obama has been promoting her autobiographical memoir, Becoming, in a literal stadium tour across the country. And for her most recent stop—at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York—she was interviewed on stage by Sarah Jessica Parker. But the real treat came in the form of her outfit for the evening, a full Balenciaga look so out of this world not even Princess Leia could have dreamed it.

Stars, suns, planets—stand down: The new center of our universe has taken her rightful place in the intergalactic realm. And she has on a pair of thigh-high gold boots so incandescent, scientists recommend the use of special sunglasses to gaze at them, lest we burn our retinas.

What I mean is: Michelle Obama wore a head-to-toe look from Balenciaga last night—a silky, long-sleeved yellow shirtdress with boots so gilded that I will soon file a petition to have the Oscar committee recast its statuette in their image.

There’s “getting dressed,” and then there’s slipping into this—so liquid and luscious that it seems to have molded around Obama. It’s an outfit that channels all the Marvel superheroes combined, but makes it fashion.

In all seriousness, Obama acknowledged in conversation with Parker that she knew no matter what she wanted the focus of her time in the White House to be, attention would be paid to her clothes. Given that, she and her team, including stylist Meredith Koop, decided to use their platform to celebrate newer and less-established designers who otherwise wouldn’t get the same level of exposure.

“You can change their lives, which is one of the reasons why we chose Jason Wu for my inaugural gown,” Obama said, adding that she made an extra effort to recognize work from a diverse range of brands and labels. “There are a whole lot of people out here who are trying to make it—young women and immigrants and black folk.” What good luck that Michelle Obama was there to literally and figuratively light the way.

While she was in the White House, Obama, like other First Ladies before and after her, occasionally faced criticism from the public for the price tag of a few designer garments she wore, which some thought were too expensive for a civil servant. Now that she’s a private citizen, though, she can wear all the runway Balenciaga she wants—and people are loving it.

The 10 Best Glitter Eyeshadows That Won't Get Everywhere

I personally believe that glitter is acceptable for all occasions. There’s nothing like it to spice up an otherwise simple look, bring light to your face, and—honestly—make a boring Tuesday a little more fun. That being said, if there’s any time that lends itself especially well to glitter eyeshadow (besides maybe a drag bar or a DeLorean ride back to Studio 54), it’s the holidays. Like snowflakes or Christmas lights, glitter is that special sparkly touch that makes everything a bit more festive.

Glitter also has the ability to make things a lot more messy. So many shimmer products have a life of their own, and in a matter of minutes stray glitter particles have left my eyelids and are all over my face (or in my eye). In the name of important research, I tasked my fellow Glamour editors with testing the best glitter eyeshadows on a night out, to find the ones that will actually stay put for the holidays and beyond. Here are the 10 winners they reported back with.

The Best Temporary Color and Glitter Hairsprays

It feels like every year, Halloween creeps up on us, forcing last-minute costume ideas, trips to Party City, and endless Google searching for the easiest ways to dress up. One simple way to get into character fast? Temporary hair color or glitter spray.

Sure, you’ve probably had bad run-ins with the stuff in the past, but just like iPhones and the Kardashians, hair color sprays have evolved a lot in the past few years. Not-so-great pink hair sprays that leave your hair crunchy for days—or worse, that don’t actually wash out—these are not. Hair and makeup brands have jumped in to not only create their own truly temporary hair dyes, but also make them bolder, gentler, and much less likely to get all over your bathroom. So in order to give your costume one last finishing touch, we’ve rounded up the best glitter, color, and metallic mists that won’t leave you with a head of flaky pigment. You’re welcome.

19 Best Glitter Nail Polishes for a Sparkly Holiday Season

Humanity’s interest in all things sparkly may go up tenfold during the holiday season, but unlike our neighbor’s Christmas lights, glittery nails won’t look out of place a few months from now. Twinkly polish takes any party look up a notch this time of year, but we’re the first ones to advocate for some OTT fingertips on a random day in March, too. Shimmery shades also have another distinct advantage: they’re beyond easy to apply and touch up, so even die-hard salon manicure devotees can manage at home without disastrous results, and if they chip, it’s usually barely noticeable. This winter, go for a classic metallic like gold or silver, pair a festive red with a plush velvet dress, or indulge your inner six-year-old with sparkly pink or electric blue. That way, next time you’re feeling a little Grinch-like—such as, say, when your flight home is delayed for the third time—at least your nails will be in the holiday spirit.
