Urban Decay's Naked Cherry Palette Is the Best of All the Nakeds

Late last summer, the sound of hearts breaking could be heard around the world when Urban Decay announced it was discontinuing the OG Naked Palette. The nude palette that launched a million nude palettes cemented the brand’s icon status, and perfectly nailed the right balance of being wearable but not boring.

Although the brand has since launched a revamped version of the Naked Palette (a.k.a. The Naked Reloaded), in the meantime it presented us with the hidden gem (and Glamour Beauty Award winner) that is the Naked Cherry Eyeshadow Palette. Naked Cherry has the same magic as the rest of the Naked family, but brings something a little different to the table—instead of basic neutrals, it has a mix of matte and shimmer shades that range from dusty mauve to deep plum. Despite the palette’s name, there’s no true cherry red shade, but there are plenty of wine and berry shades to play with. And as always, the shadows are pigmented and easy to work with.

While Urban Decay also has the Naked Heat and Naked3 Palettes that skirt around the red family, Naked Cherry holds it’s own. Heat is all warm oranges and browns, while Naked3 has hints of pretty pinks. Cherry is the perfect moody edition to the collection, and brings to mind cherry cola rather than the bright berry.

I’ve always been drawn to cherry imagery, so the second I saw the glossy cherry-covered packaging of Naked Cherry I was sold. The color scheme is a mix of girly and grunge that perfectly matches my style (think Courtney Love meets Sailor Moon chic). When I’m running out the door I’ll do a pretty wash of one of the lighter shades like the rosy Feelz or Juicy, a light peach all over my lid, and I’ll look instantly put together. If I’m feeling a little edgier or headed out at night, I can blend in the darker shades (they basically blend themselves) for a pink smoky eye that will last all night.

But don’t just take my word for it, the palette won our Beauty Awards Reader’s Choice best eyeshadow palette by nearly 50 percent of the votes. “This palette has a great selection of warm pink tones that can create looks anywhere from soft to grungy,” says Samantha Trout, a Glamour reader from Philadelphia. “I love the shimmer shades; they apply great with your fingers. So easy! Highly recommend!” Couldn’t have said it any better myself.

Urban Decay's Naked Reloaded Palette Is the Original Naked Reincarnated

If you’re anything like us, then you were pretty much devastated last summer when after eight years and 30 million palettes sold, Urban Decay announced it was discontinuing its original Naked palette. When Naked launched back in 2010, it set the standard for neutral eyeshadow palettes: versatile colors you can wear during the day, but also to go out, with a flattering mix of browns, pinks, and silvers.

“Saying goodbye to Naked is extremely bittersweet,” founding partner of Urban Decay Wende Zomnir said. “It was a big moment in our history. It’s a little painful to leave your past behind, but it’s also essential to always evolve. I will forever miss Naked, but we plan to turn the grief into even more greatness. Urban Decay will continue to thrive in Naked’s memory and honor—just wait and see.”

There was a small ray of hope when UD released the Naked Cherry palette in October; albeit, the color range hinged more on reds and purples than the neutrals Naked had been known for. But 2019 is suddenly looking up: The brand’s dropping a new version of its iconic palette in just one week, and the new shades look incredible on.

The palette, aptly named “Naked Reloaded,” includes 12 shades of neutrals, mixing them up with their much-loved combination of mattes, satins, subtle shimmers, and a couple of Saturday-night ready glittery shades. Handily, the new lineup also includes four go-to, everyday shadows designed with extra-large pans: Bribe, an ivory matte; Barely Baked, a soft, gold metallic; Boundaries, a gorgeous terracotta; and Blur, a light matte in tan. The brand’s betting you’ll use them most often, which means you need just a little more of them.

Other shades will include Distilled, a bronze metallic; Retro, a bright peach; Angel Fire, a rose-gold shimmer; and party-ready, edgy Dreamweaver, a cool brown with iridescent 3D sparkle.

The new palette is also designed to be inclusive: “We created Naked Reloaded to look good on everyone,” states a press release for Naked Reloaded. “These truly universal shades are made for any age, skin tone, and gender.”

And here’s a swatch—the shades look super-vibrant on.

The Naked Reloaded palette, which will set you back $44 ($10 less than the original), is going on pre-sale for one day only on February 18 at urbandecay.com. Otherwise, you can nab it in stores and online at Sephora on March 7. Better get that iCal reminder set now.

The Swatches for Urban Decay's Naked Cherry Palette Are Drop-Dead Gorgeous

It’s going to take time to mourn the loss of the one and (formerly) only Urban Decay Naked Palette. The original launched eight years ago, and brought with it a whirlwind of copycat neutral palettes that never quite nailed its perfect mix of mattes and shimmers. And so we pour one out for the memories, thank it for its service, and walk into the future with the promise of a brand-new Naked Palette here to fill the rectangle-shaped hole in our hearts. Introducing: the Naked Cherry Palette.

News of the palette leaked early last week, but now, we’ve finally got an idea of exactly how the colors look on. Like Naked Heat, which launched last year, Naked Cherry is another play off the red spectrum and it’s ability to create both subdued and statement looks. But where Heat leans more rustic and coppery, Cherry falls more into the champagne, red, and black cherry range.

If you’ve been in the Urban Decay palette world for a minute now, you might also remember that the Naked3 palette exists—the brand’s reigning champ of pink palettes. We’re happy to report that it’s significantly different from that too. Where the Naked3 has brownish pinks and plums covered, Cherry leans into peach on the lighter end, and reddish purples on the darker. The single could-be crossover is the light, muted plum Feelz, but the surrounding shades give it enough of a spin to avoid feeling repetitive.

The brand hasn’t released the palette’s pricing or launch date yet, but scroll on for up-close photos and swatches. Summer may be coming to a close (and know those words are delivered through the gritted teeth of full denial), but in this, we’ll be holding onto the vibe well through the fall.

Are Marriage and Babies the New Naked Selfie?

Early-aughts young Hollywood reached its peak one night in fall 2006, when Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton were all photographed in the same car. They were quickly dubbed the Unholy Trinity by tabloids and blogs, a nod to their well-documented exploits at the time. Lohan had just accused Hilton of pouring a drink on her; meanwhile, Spears was dabbling in the party scene following her split from Kevin Federline—and Hilton was her tour guide of sorts.

The photo of Lohan, Spears, and Hilton in the car (which the New York Post disgustingly called a “bimbo summit”) encapsulates a very specific time for twentysomething celebrities: a time when fame was the name of the game, and bottle service, feuds, and sex tapes helped you win.

PHOTO: X17 Agency

That’s a far cry from the social currency of today’s millennial glitterati. Now, young Hollywood is seemingly in a rush to grow up. Nick Jonas, 25, is reportedly engaged to Quantico actress Priyanka Chopra after just two months of dating. Kylie Jenner, 20, welcomed her first child with rapper Travis Scott in February. Justin Bieber popped the question to Hailey Baldwin shortly after rekindling their relationship. And, of course, we have Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson, whose whirlwind engagement—filled with couple tattoos and sappy Instagram posts—feels akin to an adolescent sugar rush.

Gone are the days when dancing on tables and posting naked selfies—a Kim Kardashian staple—established your pop-culture relevance. Three years ago, celebrities were tripping over themselves to appear the sexiest on Instagram. That still exists, but it appears the “cool” thing to do now is settle down through marriage or babies. Domestic is the new debauchery.

But why? Why are all these celebrities—some who can’t even legally drink—in such a hurry to get their hands on a metaphorical white-picket fence? After all, millennials as a whole are still apt to get married later in life, and a growing number don’t want kids at all. Jonas, Jenner, Grande, Bieber, and Baldwin, on the other hand, are ready to skip all the stages that come between “My name is…” and, “Will you marry me?” It feels rash.

That word, however, might offer us the answer. The millennial generation is also the generation of instant gratification. Food, transportation, laundry, and even sex are all accessible on our phones in five seconds with little to no interaction with others. A message turns into a hookup, which may become something more. But if it doesn’t, that’s OK, because there are most likely 50 more messages waiting in your inbox to ignite this cycle again. We no longer have to wait to be stimulated; we’re overstimulated.

It only makes sense, then, that young celebrities—who have the most access to this instant gratification culture—are ripping through relationships faster than we can keep up. They’re accustomed to getting things quickly and easily, so it’s understandable why they might be ready for marriage now. At 23.

There’s another phenomenon possibly at play, too. Our current political and social climates are just so tumultuous that young stars could be clinging onto anything that makes them feel safe. It’s been reported that Grande and Davidson feel connected to each other because they’ve each experienced extreme trauma. (Davidson lost his father on September 11, and Grande’s concert in Manchester last year fell victim to a terrorist attack.) Bieber and Baldwin are both reportedly quite religious, a shared bond that no doubt helps them navigate life. With so much uncertainty in the air, it’s not completely far-fetched to see why celebrities are itching to lock down the people in their lives who give them any semblance of peace.

How this will affect millennials (and post-millennials) at large is still a question. It’s safe to say, though, that a larger wave of young people looking to settle down could be coming. In fact, it may have already arrived: Consider how it’s now trendy to stay in on Friday nights and scoff at the exhaustion of club culture. Plus, reality TV shows like Love Island and The Bachelor are in the business of selling everlasting love to contestants in their twenties. Whether or not those relationships pan out is irrelevant; what matters is people want to lose themselves in the idea of finding a partner.

The shift toward young domesticity has actually been around for a while; it just took Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber joining in for the world to notice. They’re now the faces of this movement: the movement of 22-year-olds who are ready to stop playing around, and start playing house.

Kendall Jenner Keeps the Naked Dress Trend Alive and Well at Cannes

Kendall Jenner and her oft-photographed cohort—the KarJenners, the Hadids—have never shied away from a good naked outfit—short or long, formal or casual. Famously, there was her 2017 Met Gala dress, made from one (one) piece of string. A few months later, her famous sib Kim Kardashian stepped out in what was basically a transparent shift dress sandwiched between a jacket and briefs. Last year, Bella Hadid wore what basically passed as the Frozen version of the look, complete with blingy, icy embellishments, along with some casual crocheted seperates. The trend was still going strong as of September, when Selena Gomez wore an incredibly romantic Rodarte look to the #BoF500 party in New York. And of course, even more examples go back to a high point of the trend in 2016 after it exploded in 2015. But Jenner’s first naked look, courtesy of Cannes, is one of the glammest, sheerest, party-ready looks we’ve seen yet—and then she took us by surprise in a totally different version of the trend.

As of Friday, Jenner hadn’t attended any films—but she was at the Secret Chopard Party that night, wearing a short, sheer green Alexandre Vauthier minidress blinged out with glitter (and accessorized with Chopard earrings, of course) that caught the camera flashes. No bra, no worries.

She caught the look on her Instagram stories, too.

But a new day calls for a new dress, and on Saturday, she hit the red carpet for the premiere of Girls of the Sun (the only female-directed film in competition at this year’s Cannes, BTW) in an naked dress that was otherwise opposite in every way: long to Friday’s short, tulle to Friday’s mesh, white to Friday’s black. It’s sort of like if a Bond girl was also an angel. Should you be considering a major investment, it hails from Schiaparelli’s Fall/Winter 2017-2018 couture collection.

A Pregnant Khloé Kardashian Wore the Sparkliest Naked Jumpsuit on Christmas Eve

As you might have heard by now, the epic annual Kardashian Christmas party took place on Christmas Eve—and Kris Jenner left no stop un-pulled. You also might have heard that the family has also been teasing us all Advent season long by issuing a day-by-day Christmas-card-style pic of the family, all sans Kylie Jenner, which many speculate has to do with the fact that she’s planning to reveal her rumored pregnancy on Christmas Day. But enough about the family! We’re here to talk about Khloé Kardashian, who announced her own pregnancy on December 20, and what she wore to the Krismas party on Sunday night.

What she wore was the world’s sparkliest, nakedest jumpsuit. We caught a glimpse of it in some of the videos from the family’s huge party, but it wasn’t until Monday that she posted a picture of it to her Instagram. It’s perfect for the kind of all-out party Kris hosted: The whole garment was decked out in undulating lines of fringe that gave it a very modern flapper vibe practically designed for the KiraKira app. You can bet there was a gorgeous white fur coat thrown over the look.

We’ve definitely seen other members of the family in naked dresses before, too—they’re practically famous for them, after all. Kendall Jenner wore one made from a single piece of string. Kim Kardashian, when she isn’t foregoing pants altogether, has also been known to don a naked dress from time to time (one notable example being one made of totally transparent vinyl-looking material).

But we’re loving this ultra-fresh take on the look. Hey, a jumpsuit is probably better for dancing, anyway—and there was a lot of that going on last night.
