The Schitt's Creek Series Finale Made People Very Emotional on Social Media


The rise of Schitt’s Creek as one of the most popular shows on television is very much a modern-day success story. While it had an original core audience after its American debut five years ago on the channel Pop, it became hugely popular once its first two seasons began streaming on Netflix in January 2017.

However and whenever you met the wonderfully wacky Rose family—Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis—and the many colorful residents of the titular town, you likely fell in love with them. I know I did. The show and its characters are highly meme-able and have become internet staples. And last night, April 7, fans bid an emotional farewell to it. (The final season is not yet streaming on Netflix.)

When we first met the Roses, they were incredibly out-of-touch rich people who suddenly found themselves penniless and living in a roadside motel in Schitt’s Creek, a town they’d purchased as a joke. But over the course of six seasons, the characters grew and evolved and became heartwarming, hilarious beacons of light, hopefulness, and acceptance. That made the finale even more heartfelt. While I’ll miss all the “Ew, Davids,” Moira’s weird pronunciations and wig collection, and Alexis’s perfect way of sliding a random fact from her past life into casual conversation, it’s the relationships I’ll miss most of all. As far as finales go, I think this one was pretty perfect—from Patrick and David’s wedding to the final goodbyes for the family. I’m still a weepy mess.

And I wasn’t alone, as many fans also worked out their feelings about the finale on social media:

Co-creator and star Dan Levy wrote a heartfelt note to the cast, crew, and fans ahead of the April 7th episode. “This show has been the love of my life for the past seven years,” he said. “Getting to tell these stories, build these characters, and watch them grow has been a privilege for which I will always be grateful.”

He continued, “As for our viewers, getting to share this show with you, getting to watch you champion it, tell your friends about it, herald its messages of love and acceptance with such empathy and passion… that is something I will never forget. The stories you have shared with me over the years have made me laugh and cry and feel empowered to keep making things that mean something…Thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives to watch our show. I am forever grateful for this time we had together. Here’s to many more stories and many more memories, whatever they may be.”

Saying Goodbye to ‘Schitt’s Creek’ With Annie Murphy and Sarah Levy Is Shockingly Cathartic


Murphy: I was like a brick that sweat just a tiny little bit out of its eyes from time to time. Sarah was a brick that had been dumped in the ocean and had taken on all of the water and had been wrung out at the table read. You were an adorable, sweet, sentimental mess. And I was inside. It was all there. I was just holding it in to piss Dan off.

Levy: That’s really what he wanted, for us to all cry—

Murphy: Crumble like him.

Levy: —which I gave into.

Murphy: I think that the scene where we find out that Twyla has been sitting on bazillions of dollars for all of these years is so triumphant and made me fall in love with Twyla even more.

Let’s be honest, Twyla has helped Alexis much more than Alexis has helped Twyla. They’ve become such dear friends, and I genuinely think that Twyla is Alexis’s best friend. So I think that the way they got to say goodbye to each other was written so beautifully, was so perfect for both characters. That was a really weepy day.

Levy: Alexis has always seemingly had more power over Twyla because she was just this sweet girl in a cafe, but at the very end you really see this nice equality between the two of them. Both of them acknowledge what they’ve brought to each other’s lives and the relationship they want to have moving forward.

Sarah, during the episode Twyla had the line: “Being here, getting to hear your stories over the past few years, even the scary ones, that made me smile.” How has it been watching your brother and father create this series? Is it like that?

Levy: It has been extremely emotional. It’s not only a journey that I’ve been on and we’ve been on as a cast, coming together and getting to know one another so well, but having seen this from beginning to end…. I remember when Daniel was coming over to my parents’ house and they were writing the pilot presentation, when it was just the idea. To see it go from that to this, seemingly in the blink of an eye—so much has happened, but it feels like it all happened so fast.

Saying goodbye to that after this year is going to be hell. I’ve been feeling it even now, not being able to see my dad and my brother on a regular basis has been weird. I’m just so used to seeing them. It’s been a very strange experience, unlike anything I’ve ever had.

Okay, time to get serious. How much money did Alexis turn down from Twyla?

Levy: [Laughs.] You tell it! I’m going to fuck it up. I think the check that I was given to give Alexis was…what was it? Like…was it, like, 50?

Murphy: I was going to say $25,000.

Levy: I think it was like $50,000. I was like, “$50,000? This girl has won like millions and millions of dollars!”

Murphy: When we got to set and Sarah was given the prop, she actually took it, looked at it, and was like, “What the fuck? This is bullshit.” She was so aggressively angry about the amount that Twyla chose to give away.

Levy: It just defeated the whole purpose of the generous gift!

Schitt's Creek Season 6: Everything We Know So Far


One of 2019’s TV breakouts is, without a doubt, Schitt’s Creek, the Canadian sitcom that’s found a whole new audience after it became available on Netflix. The premise is ridiculous in the best way possible: an incredibly wealthy family, the Roses, must rebuild their life after losing their entire fortune. Their only remaining asset is a small town called Schitt’s Creek, which they bought as a joke for their son, David (Dan Levy). As you can imagine, a hilarious comedy of errors ensues as this out-of-touch family attempts to live like “regular” folk in a town with not much of anything.

We’ve grown to love the Rose family—Johnny (Eugene Levy), David, Alexis (Annie Murphy), and Moira (Catherine O’Hara)—over the course of five seasons. And now, they’re bidding us farewell. The sixth and final season of Schitt’s Creek will premiere January 7, 2020 on Pop TV. Dan Levy dropped the first trailer for it in mid-November, and it’ll make you feel all the things. (Perhaps the most surprising element of Schitt’s Creek is its emotional poignancy. I mean, who didn’t cry during Patrick’s serenade to David in season four?)

The cast. All the key players are returning: the Rose family, Patrick (Noah Reid), Stevie (Emily Hampshire), Ted (Dustin Milligan), plus supporting roles played by Chris Elliot, Jenn Robertson, and Sarah Levy.

The plot. With this show, you never know, but expect follow-ups on all the major developments from season five: Moira’s movie drama, Alexis and Ted’s Galapagos journey, plus David and Patrick’s engagement.

The show is ending on Dan and Eugene Levy’s terms. The father-son duo released a statement earlier this year explaining why Schitt’s Creek was ending despite its popularity:

“To Our Dear Fans,

We are very excited to announce that Schitt’s Creek is coming back for a sixth season on CBC and Pop in 2020! We also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that we’ve decided season six will be our last. We are so grateful to have been given the time and creative freedom to tell this story in its totality, concluding with a final chapter that we had envisioned from the very beginning. It’s not lost on us what a rare privilege it is in this industry to get to decide when your show should take its final bow. We could never have dreamed that our fans would grow to love and care about these characters in the ways that you have.
