Jennifer Lopez Asked Ruth Bader Ginsburg for the Secret to a Happy Marriage

While it’s still TBD on when Jennifer Lopez is officially tying the knot with fiancé Alex Rodriguez, there’s no doubt we’re excited for what’s sure to be a glamorous day. Although wedding preparations might be underway (or at least ideating—J.Lo did just wrap a tour, after all), J.Lo definitely has the upcoming nuptials on her mind. How do we know? She reportedly recently asked Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for marriage advice—and you can bet The Notorious RBG knew exactly what to say.

Ginsburg told the story herself at the Library of Congress’s National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. this weekend. Apparently J.Lo called her up casually and they wound up hanging out with Ginsburg at her office.

“I was called up about a month or so ago by Jennifer Lopez, and she said she would like to meet me and introduce her fiancé Alex Rodriguez,” she said. “So they came to chambers, and we had a very nice visit. She mostly wanted to ask if I had any secret about a happy marriage. But now ARod is traveling with her to concerts all over the world…”

The interviewer at the panel discussion Ginsburg was recounting this at asked Ginsburg, “So what was your secret to a happy marriage? Did you pass on your mother-in-law’s secret?”

“Yeah, on the day I was married, my mother in law took me aside and said she wanted to tell me what was the secret of a happy marriage,” Ginsburg responded. “And I said I’d be glad to hear what is it, and she responded it helps sometimes to be a little deaf.”

I mean, not gonna knock it! And Ginsburg should know: She paved the way as a groundbreaking, hugely dedicated justice while maintaining a marriage to husband Marty Ginsburg for more than 50 years (he died in 2010).

With a dash of her dry humor, Ginsburg also added that her advice works in a few other contexts, namely “every workplace, including the good job I have now.”

As a quick refresh, A-Rod proposed back in March while the two were vacationing in the Bahamas with an absolute whopper of an emerald-cut diamond. The moment was captured perfectly on Instagram:

Since then, the two have been living it up: J.Lo recently celebrated her epic 50th birthday with an epically over-the-top party at Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s estate on Star Island in Miami, as one does.

Lopez soon reciprocated the birthday affection with a fun surprise for A-Rod, who turned 44 toward the end of July: She and his two daughters surprised him during an ESPN appearance.

Then, she pulled him onstage during her Miami concert to sing him “Happy Birthday,” complete with a massive Yankees-themed cake.

Clearly, these two are pros at making things work with their insanely busy schedules—but getting a little extra advice from The Notorious RBG, who has put in years of work both on the bench and back home with her husband? Definitely can’t hurt.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Just Shared an Update About Her Health

A week after the Supreme Court announced that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had been treated for pancreatic cancer—her fourth cancer diagnosis, and her second of pancreatic cancer—Ginsburg herself decided to share an update about her health. On Saturday (August 31), while appearing at the 2019 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C., she addressed the crowd with some dry humor.

“As this audience can see I am alive. And I’m on my way to being very well,” she said, according to People.

Ginsburg, who’s lovingly nicknamed “The Notorious RBG,” also said she’d be “prepared” for when the Supreme Court’s next session kicks off again. “We have more than a month yet to go. I will be prepared when the time comes.”

“I love my job. It’s the best and the hardest job that I have ever had. It’s kept me going through four cancer battles,” she continued. “Instead of concentrating on my aches and pains, I just know that I have to read this set of briefs, go over the draft opinion. I have to somehow surmount whatever is going on in my body and concentrate on the court’s work.”

Ginsburg, who is famously dedicated to her job—last December, she registered her opposition to Trump’s asylum reform bill from her hospital bed—spoke in a very similar vein in July. During an interview with NPR, she seemed to reference the late Kentucky senator Jim Bunning, who, after one of her cancer diagnoses, said he thought she’d be dead in a year. “There was a senator, I think it was after the pancreatic cancer, who announced with great glee that I was going to be dead within six months. That senator, whose name I’ve forgotten, is now himself dead. And I am very much alive,” Ginsburg said.

She mentioned then too how her work is what kept her going. “The work is really what saved me because I had to concentrate on reading the briefs, doing a draft of an opinion, and I knew it had to get done,” she said in the July NPR interview. “So I had to get past whatever my aches and pains were just to do the job.”

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Was Treated for Pancreatic Cancer. People on Social Media Are Offering to Donate Organs

The Supreme Court has announced that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was treated for pancreatic cancer this summer, spending three weeks at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for radiation.

In a statement crafted to calm the hearts and minds of frantic progressives, the court was explicit: “The tumor was treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body.”

Still, fans of the icon, who is 86 and sometimes known as #NotoriousRBG, did not appear soothed on social media. Within minutes of the release, Twitter exploded with well-wishes, appeals to various deities, and a not insignificant number of offers to donate organs.

This is after all Justice Ginsburg’s fourth cancer diagnosis. In 1999, she was operated on to treat colon cancer. In 2009, she was treated for pancreatic cancer, still in its earliest stages. And last December, two cancerous nodules were removed from her left lung.

In its statement, the court explained that Justice Ginsburg started her out-patient treatment for a localized cancerous tumor on her pancreas on August 5. But this is Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose workout routines are the stuff of legends and who, it was reported, continued to work on her caseload from her hospital bed last winter, so she does not appeared to have much slowed down. In its announcement, the court noted that “the Justice tolerated treatment well. She cancelled her annual summer visit to Santa Fe, but has otherwise maintained an active schedule.” The court also assured nervous citizens that “Justice Ginsburg will continue to have periodic blood tests and scans. No further treatment is needed at this time.”

Below, read the full statement from the Supreme Court and then the much less even-keeled reactions from RBG stans, who are prepared to go under the knife for a legend.

RBG, get well soon.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Will Outlive All Her Critics

People should know by now not to mess with Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The tenacious, 86-year-old Supreme Court Justice has served on the bench since taking the oath of office in 1993, and her tough-as-nails opinions and unwavering battles for equal rights have made her a superstar lovingly referred to as the Notorious RBG.

Even while grappling with some recent health scares (she fractured three ribs during a fall and underwent surgery for lung cancer), she’s remained incredibly dedicated to her duties on the bench. She even worked from her hospital bed, opposing restrictions to the immigrant asylum system.

This week, she sat down for an interview with NPR, in connection with an event for the American College of Surgeons. (Ginsburg will serve as the organization’s new president.) She discussed her health and her thoughts on the Supreme Court today, and she pretty much skewered the people who have cruelly predicted that she won’t be around much longer. Without naming him, she referenced the late Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning Kentucky, who said after she was diagnosed with cancer that he believed she would die within a year.

“There was a senator, I think it was after the pancreatic cancer, who announced with great glee that I was going to be dead within six months. That senator, whose name I’ve forgotten, is now himself dead. And I am very much alive,” Ginsburg said.

While her comments show she’s as sharp as ever, she opened up about balancing work and her health. Ginsburg has said that she wants to retire when she’s 90, like her colleague Justice John Paul Stevens, who passed away recently. People have worried that she’ll retire sooner when news of her illnesses have featured in headlines, but RBG explained that her career actually keeps her going.

“The work is really what saved me,” she said, “because I had to concentrate on reading the briefs, doing a draft of an opinion, and I knew it had to get done. So I had to get past whatever my aches and pains were just to do the job.”

Spoken like the boss she is.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Has Been Released from the Hospital Following Lung Cancer Surgery

In what may be the best Christmas gift ever, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has reportedly been discharged from the hospital following surgery to remove lung cancer.

In an email to CNN, Kathy Arberg, a public information officer for the Supreme Court, told reporters that Justice Ginsburg had been released from the hospital on Christmas Day and is now “recuperating at home,” following the announcement on December 21 that she would be undergoing surgery for lung cancer.

RBG has had a rough winter. Last month, a bad fall left the Supreme Court Justice hospitalized with three broken ribs, and it was during this time that doctors first discovered two cancerous nodules on her left lung. To remove them, Justice Ginsburg “underwent a pulmonary lobectomy” at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York this week, according to an official statement from the Supreme Court.

According to RBG’s surgeon, the nodules removed during surgery were found to be malignant, but “scans performed before surgery indicated no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body.” Her surgeon confirmed RBG appears to be in the clear and “no further treatment is planned.”

In reaction to her the surgery, Twitter has seen an outpouring of support for the Supreme Court Justice over the past week, with fans hilariously praising Justice Ginsburg’s “brass ovaries” and wishing her a speedy recovery.

Previously, Justice Ginsburg has said she plans to serve on the Supreme Court for at least another five years. And while her recent repeated trips to the hospital have some worried she may not be able to hold out for that long, Ginsburg appears to be tackling business with her usual moxie, just this week voting against President Trump’s proposed immigrant asylum restrictions bill from her hospital bed.

Luckily, the Justices are not scheduled to return to office for official business until January 4, which gives Justice Ginsburg some extra time to recover.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Voted on Trump's Asylum Reform From Her Hospital Bed

On Friday, immediately following surgery to remove two cancerous nodes from her left lung, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg voted against President Donald Trump’s proposed immigrant asylum restrictions from her hospital bed. Hers was the decisive vote in the 5-4 decision to strike down the proposal, NPR reported.

The proposal, NBC explained, would have automatically denied asylum to people who enter the United States from Mexico without going through official border crossings. Trump said the proposal was in direct response to the migrant caravan making its way toward the southern border.

Beyond being able to cast her vote, it appears the Notorious RBG is also on the up and up with her health. In November, the Supreme Court justice was hospitalized following a fall that left her with several broken ribs. According to a statement from the Supreme Court, doctors discovered her cancerous nodes while undergoing routine care for her injury. Following the surgery, doctors announced they were able to remove all of the cancer, and it appears it did not spread.

“According to the thoracic surgeon, Valerie W. Rusch, MD, FACS, both nodules removed during surgery were found to be malignant on initial pathology evaluation,” a statement by her physicians read. “Post-surgery, there was no evidence of any remaining disease. Scans performed before surgery indicated no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. Currently, no further treatment is planned. Justice Ginsburg is resting comfortably and is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days. Updates will be provided as they become available.”

As NPR noted, by Friday evening, the 85-year-old was sitting up in her hospital room’s chair calling friends and sounding “chipper.” She apparently even hopes to be back in the courtroom for the next argument session, which begins in early January—and that’s entirely possible, according to Dr. Douglas Mathisen, chairman of thoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, who told NPR that recovery from an operation like hers typically ranges from two to four days in the hospital. And because RBG seems to get a lifetime’s worth of work done in an hour, we’re confident we’ll see her back in her robe in January.
