Coronavirus: Newborn Babies at a Thai Hospital Are Being Given Tiny Face Shields to Protect Them from COVID-19

Naturally, as the images made their way across the internet, they stirred up a lot of emotions. “So cute and so unbelievably sad. What a world to be born into. Meanwhile, in the UK not even frontline NHS staff can get face shields,” one person tweeted.

“This is sad. And also? The cutest thing ever,” Busy Phillips wrote.

Per Yahoo News UK, Thailand had a total of 2,473 cases of COVID-19 and 33 people had died from the coronavirus as of April 10. According to the New York Times, the U.S. has almost 500,000 reported cases and over 18,000 deaths.

There is still a lot that is unknown about COVID-19’s effect on pregnant women and newborns. “We do not currently know if pregnant people have a greater chance of getting sick from COVID-19 than the general public nor whether they are more likely to have serious illness as a result,” the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) says on their website. “Based on available information, pregnant people seem to have the same risk as adults who are not pregnant.” The CDC also notes that pregnant women’s bodies are going through changes that may put them at a higher risk for some infections and illnesses caused by viruses.

Once again, we must ask you to stay home as much as possible, practice social-distancing and help to flatten the curve.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Has Been Released from the Hospital Following Lung Cancer Surgery


In what may be the best Christmas gift ever, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has reportedly been discharged from the hospital following surgery to remove lung cancer.

In an email to CNN, Kathy Arberg, a public information officer for the Supreme Court, told reporters that Justice Ginsburg had been released from the hospital on Christmas Day and is now “recuperating at home,” following the announcement on December 21 that she would be undergoing surgery for lung cancer.

RBG has had a rough winter. Last month, a bad fall left the Supreme Court Justice hospitalized with three broken ribs, and it was during this time that doctors first discovered two cancerous nodules on her left lung. To remove them, Justice Ginsburg “underwent a pulmonary lobectomy” at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York this week, according to an official statement from the Supreme Court.

According to RBG’s surgeon, the nodules removed during surgery were found to be malignant, but “scans performed before surgery indicated no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body.” Her surgeon confirmed RBG appears to be in the clear and “no further treatment is planned.”

In reaction to her the surgery, Twitter has seen an outpouring of support for the Supreme Court Justice over the past week, with fans hilariously praising Justice Ginsburg’s “brass ovaries” and wishing her a speedy recovery.

Previously, Justice Ginsburg has said she plans to serve on the Supreme Court for at least another five years. And while her recent repeated trips to the hospital have some worried she may not be able to hold out for that long, Ginsburg appears to be tackling business with her usual moxie, just this week voting against President Trump’s proposed immigrant asylum restrictions bill from her hospital bed.

Luckily, the Justices are not scheduled to return to office for official business until January 4, which gives Justice Ginsburg some extra time to recover.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Voted on Trump's Asylum Reform From Her Hospital Bed


On Friday, immediately following surgery to remove two cancerous nodes from her left lung, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg voted against President Donald Trump’s proposed immigrant asylum restrictions from her hospital bed. Hers was the decisive vote in the 5-4 decision to strike down the proposal, NPR reported.

The proposal, NBC explained, would have automatically denied asylum to people who enter the United States from Mexico without going through official border crossings. Trump said the proposal was in direct response to the migrant caravan making its way toward the southern border.

Beyond being able to cast her vote, it appears the Notorious RBG is also on the up and up with her health. In November, the Supreme Court justice was hospitalized following a fall that left her with several broken ribs. According to a statement from the Supreme Court, doctors discovered her cancerous nodes while undergoing routine care for her injury. Following the surgery, doctors announced they were able to remove all of the cancer, and it appears it did not spread.

“According to the thoracic surgeon, Valerie W. Rusch, MD, FACS, both nodules removed during surgery were found to be malignant on initial pathology evaluation,” a statement by her physicians read. “Post-surgery, there was no evidence of any remaining disease. Scans performed before surgery indicated no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. Currently, no further treatment is planned. Justice Ginsburg is resting comfortably and is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days. Updates will be provided as they become available.”

As NPR noted, by Friday evening, the 85-year-old was sitting up in her hospital room’s chair calling friends and sounding “chipper.” She apparently even hopes to be back in the courtroom for the next argument session, which begins in early January—and that’s entirely possible, according to Dr. Douglas Mathisen, chairman of thoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, who told NPR that recovery from an operation like hers typically ranges from two to four days in the hospital. And because RBG seems to get a lifetime’s worth of work done in an hour, we’re confident we’ll see her back in her robe in January.

Blake Lively Apparently Drove Herself to the Hospital While in Labor


Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have the most wonderful social media relationship—and, we’re pretty sure, real-life relationship too. (Reynolds has, after all, called being Lively’s husband the “best gig”.) As it turns out, their partnership holds fast even during critical moments—like, say, when Lively was in labor and needing to head straight for the hospital.

In a tweet that is also not-so-subtly a promo for Lively’s upcoming movie, A Simple Favor, Reynolds threw in a little factoid guaranteed to get headlines: “You can tell me. We’re married. You once drove me to the hospital when you were giving birth. So… what the fuck happened to Emily?” (Emphasis ours.)

He was replying to this emoji-filled tweet from Lively, which was also teasing her movie: “❓????❓ @ASimpleFavor”

After Ryan’s response, Lively chimed back in: “Oh darling, of all the secrets I’m keeping from you, this should be the LEAST of your concerns… trust me.”

This isn’t the first time Lively/her team have harnessed her social media to promo A Simple Favor. At the beginning of May, she wiped her Instagram clean, replacing her bio with “What Happened to Emily?…”. For those of us who follow Lively’s self-styled outfits, this was an egregious blow, but she luckily had it back up and running in no time.

Nor is it the first instance of a little social media back-and-forth for her and hubby Reynolds. The two are experts at trolling each other, like that one time when Reynolds wished Lively a happy birthday with a picture of the two of them—but cropped her out of it. Now that one of their daughters is in on the tradition, too, we’re just ready for the next installment.
