The one thing all romantic comedies have in common? They celebrate the two things everyone wants in life—rom and com, of course. To honor that, we’re devoting a whole week to the genre. More on the rom-coms we love, past and present, here.
It’s officially autumn, which means I just want to lie in bed under all of my impulsively purchased Target throws, turn on all two of my oil diffusers, and watch romantic comedies while holding my girlfriend’s hand. The romance in these movies is all well and good, but this season—and every season, if I’m being honest—I’m especially obsessed with the sweaters in rom-coms.
I don’t know what it is about the genre, but there are so many cardigans. Why are there so many cardigans? It doesn’t matter if you’re as hot as Cher in Moonstruck or as charming as Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally, everyone’s got a sweater on. Scientifically speaking, it seems you simply cannot find your soulmate until you have found the perfect cardigan and chase your lover to the airport while wearing it.
And so, I’m sharing the very best sweaters I’ve seen in rom-coms—along with modern equivalents that you can shop now—just in time for cold-weather season. See them all, below.

RIP, summer 2019—we will miss you and your slip dresses. But know that we will be wearing cashmere to your funeral.
See, sweater weather isn’t just a time of year—it’s a state of mind (or a coping mechanism, depending on your outlook). There’s no better way to welcome the sudden chill than by layering all of your favorite knits until you forget what it was like to go outside without a coat on.
Of course, the most luxurious layer of all is cashmere. And for a long time, it was synonymous with “expensive.” And while you can definitely find versions to invest in, brands like Reformation, Naadam, and Everlane sell great affordable cashmere sweaters that are just as cozy for a fraction of the price. And the feeling of soft, fuzzy cashmere on a chilly fall morning? That’s priceless.
Check out some our favorite affordable cashmere sweaters below, and shop your way to the best sweater weather yet.

It’s quite satisfying to stock up on seasonal pieces just as the weather starts to turn—especially in the fall, when these staples skew heavily toward the warm and cozy. You really know it’s autumn, though, when it’s time to swap the T-shirts in your closet for the sweaters: the turtlenecks, the V-necks, the fuzzy, the striped, the cashmere-blend…. All you need to do is add some denim, and you’re the picture of fall fashion. So, to ring in the season, we’re rounding up the very best sweaters you can buy for $50 or less. You’ll want to stock up on these ASAP, before the good ones are gone.
They don’t call it sweater weather for nothing–now is the time to buy all of the oversized sweaters you’ll need to get through the winter weather. There is after all no better garment to cuddle up in than an oversized sweater, they’re practically blankets you can wear out of the house. Thanks to brands like Ganni, they’re also really on trend too.
Need to go on a date? Great, you can wear an oversized sweater over your favorite summer dress and look somewhat fancy and also fun to hug. Running late to work? Not a problem! You can wear an oversized sweater with a pair of jeans and sneakers to look relatively professional for any meeting. Hungover!? Alright! Wear an oversized sweater over a turtleneck to help beat the chills. Basically we want to live the rest of our lives in oversized sweaters (at least until winter is over, so like, almost forever) and you can too. There are so many good ones available from Shopbop, Everlane and & Other Stories all for under $100 right now so go forth and be cozy, regardless of the scenario or occasion.
I take a simple approach to fall dressing: The cozier, the better. Fluffy camel coats? Count me in. Oversize knits? I have more than I can count. As soon as the temperature drops, I want feel like I’m wearing a Snuggie but look like I’m actually trying. Yet there’s one quintessentially fall piece that has eluded my grasp every season: the quality cashmere sweater that doesn’t cost a fortune. Most I gravitate toward clock in at $150 or more, which has kept me from pulling the trigger.
A solution to my cashmere sweater FOMO arrived this fall when several of my favorite brands launched affordable cashmere sweater collections. This cashmere, brands promised, is just as soft as the material you’ll find at a Burberry or Brooks Brothers but much, much less expensive. (And in the case of eco-friendly brands like Everlane and Naadam, it’s sustainably sourced too.) In the name of science and wallet-friendly fall fashion, I tested five affordable cashmere sweater options that are available now. Like a true millennial, I documented my cashmere sweater looks in the Glamour bathroom mirror. All live up to their I-could-wear-this-forever hype, and all are $100 or less. Scroll on to find out which brands offer luxury-grade sweaters for a fraction of the price—and which takes home the prize for most affordable cashmere sweater.

When I wear an oversized sweater I want to drown in it. I want people to mistake my top for a pillow, to feel the urge to lean over and fall asleep on my shoulder. I want a sweater that feels like a blanket without actually looking like a blanket. A sweater that I can throw on over all my summer dresses and pair with my favorite jeans. A sweater I can wear with loafers and grey socks while sipping wine on top of a pile of hay in the English countryside. If this seems like a incredibly specific reference, well, that’s because it is: I’m obsessed with the Instagram below of Alexa Chung in the exact oversized sweater I’ve always wanted.
Look how peaceful she looks! It’s just her, her wine glass and the most perfectly oversized mohair knit I’ve ever seen. I honestly understand why she’s smiling. I’m smiling just looking at this photo. I think the sweater’s even smiling. It’s perfect. It’s also by Scandinavian It-girl label Ganni and $440. Ugh.
Since the Instagram algorithm is out to kill me, new photos of the sweater—this time with stripes—started popping up on my feed recently. Different style, same damn price.
Because I’m not exactly ready to drop over $400 on a single sweater (if you are, you’re lucky and can buy it here!), I scoured the depths of the internet for similar styles that might make me feel remotely as warm and fuzzy and crazy inside as this one. Luckily, I found 14 under $100 (with one honorable mention that’s a little pricier but still a lot less expensive than the Ganni version that’s captured my heart.). See below for respectable alternatives.
PHOTO: MANGO
This Mango style is a decent match, and I think I love these colors even more than the original. The red and brown just feel very Fall and will absolutely go with all the corduroy and tan you already own.
One of the best things about the original Ganni sweater is its amazing chunky collar. And look at this amazing chunky collar!

The colors in this one are also nice and autumn-y but the variation on the sleeves is what makes it stand out. The black stripes give it some edge and would look good with black jeans, a leather skirt or thigh highs.
This one manages to cover a ton of the color trends we’re about to see everywhere–lavender, lime green and orange.

For the color averse! Even if rainbow is everywhere, it’s not for everyone. This sweater still has that oversized chunky look but with a more minimalist vibe. It’ll look great with basically any pair of jeans or sneakers.

So good I had to include it twice! But this time in sizes 16-24.

For New Yorkers (and New Yorkers at heart) everywhere. Essentially this is a black and white version of the original and would look great over a long black slip skirt.
This sweater is great if you love the striped look but prefer a tighter fit instead of oversized. It’s perfect for french tucking (which if you haven’t watched Queer Eye is just tucking a little bit of the sweater into the front of your jeans).

If October was a sweater it would be this one. It has the halloween colors to get you in the spirit without looking too costume-y.
If you’ve stocked up on the next big shirt for Fall, chances are you may not want to invest in something with statement sleeves. Madewell is here to fix all of that with this perfectly chic striped sweater with normal sized sleeves and proportions.
The classics are always good and a simple striped sweater like this is absolutely an essential. This one also looks particularly fuzzy and that’s always a good thing.
Honorable mention! More often than not sweaters out live other pieces in your wardrobe. They are after made to sustain cold temperatures. So if you don’t quite want to spend $500 but are willing to invest more than $100 this Etsy Shop is worth visiting. They have a wide variety of one-of-a-kind oversized striped knits starting at $100 and going up to nearly $200. It’s the perfect answer if you want to get on the Instagram trend without looking like everyone else.
