David's Bridal Will No Longer Charge More for Plus-Size Wedding Dresses

One of the largest retail chains for wedding attire is making a massive change to their pricing structure—at last.

David’s Bridal announced it will no longer charge higher prices for plus-size wedding dresses and bridesmaids’ gowns. “On average, the up charge for a plus-size wedding gown is nearly 15 percent, and we do not believe that a woman’s size should determine how much she pays,” Jim Marcum, CEO of David’s Bridal, said in a statement given to Glamour. “Since I started at David’s Bridal just over four months ago, I have made it my number one priority to serve all brides, making it our mission to remind every bride that she is beautiful.”

David’s Bridal has been size-inclusive—carrying size 0 through 30W—for some time, but now it’s also making sure the brand is treating all of its customers fairly when it comes to price, the deciding factor for so many brides-to-be. (The brand also recently announced the introduction of free returns and exchanges.)

“Going forward, all brides and bridesmaids will pay the same price for the same style, regardless of the size,” the statement added.

While equal pricing no matter size seems totally logical, it simply has not been the way the business model has worked previously. The so-called “fat tax” (or price parity) is not exclusive to the bridal industry and generally pervasive across many retail brands. (Airlines and spas have also been accused of up-charging larger customers.)

“Yes, it takes more fabric to make a larger garment versus a smaller one, which could be why some people want to put that back onto the customer, but that doesn’t seem like the right way to do things,” Chromat’s Becca McCharen-Tran told Glamour earlier this year, adding that designers can adjust wholesale margins based on the largest size they sell to offset expenses while keeping the price consistent. “If I were a designer working with leather or an expensive fabric, I would alter the margin to reflect the most expensive version. It’s offensive to charge it back to the customer.”

Hopefully more brands, bridal and otherwise, will follow suit.

The 8 Best Wedding Dress Trends From Bridal Fashion Week Fall 2020

Understatement of the century: There’s a lot that goes into wedding planning. And Bridal Fashion Week—where over 30 brands show at least 15 new looks biannually—doesn’t make checking a wedding dress off the to-do list much easier. We can’t tell you exactly which one to pick, but we can tell you what trends from the fall 2020 runways are actually worth following.

The best and biggest trends from the latest bridal collections fall into two camps: the extreme and the understated. The tiered ruffles in crinkly crepe fabric, millennial pink gowns, and watercolor florals are impossible to miss. The easy necklines and refined sleeve styles are subtler, one-off details that tie together an elegant wedding day look. No matter which direction you go, the top looks from the season allow you to kick off your hunt with gowns that are anything but cookie-cutter.

Straight from the Bridal Fashion Week runways, here are the best (and no-brainer) wedding dress trends for fall 2020.

Bridal Fashion Week Fall 2020: 25 Best Wedding Looks and Dresses

Just like a wedding DJ who keeps the bops coming, Bridal Fashion Week is deeply loyal to the classics. So no one was surprised when the fall 2020 runways replayed a few of the greatest hits: ruffled ballgowns, long-sleeve wrap dresses, Kate Middleton-inspired lace gowns. But we were most enamored with the looks that took a sharp turn away from traditional wedding style—and there were far more curveball looks than in past seasons.

Where some bridal houses would stick to a template silhouette, up-and-coming designers including Danielle Frankel and Sahroo injected surprise twists into their nuptial-day designs: an uneven puffed shoulder here, a foil embellishment there. As for the names you’re used to seeing season after season—the Caroline Herrera’s, Lela Rose’s, and Monique Lhuillier’s—they displayed their hallmark craftsmanship to breathtaking effect. And while there were plenty of gowns on display, many of the best looks for fall 2020 weren’t even dresses, as more brands are playing with separates and jumpsuits than ever before (to the relief of brides who’d prefer a little extra movement).

Fall 2020’s best wedding looks are a little out of Bridal Fashion Week’s ordinary—and that’s what made them special. Whether you’re a casual wedding enthusiast or a bride-to-be, you’ll fall in love with at least one of these gowns, jumpsuits, and separates, ahead.

The Best Wedding Dresses We Saw at Bridal Fashion Week Spring 2020

I’m not getting married any time soon. But that hasn’t stopped me from looking forward to seeing wedding dresses at Bridal Fashion Week each season. The same can be said for anyone who appreciates a breathtaking gown: You might not be anticipating a walk down the aisle in the near future, but you definitely wouldn’t mind getting swept up in the fairy tales imagined by bridal designers in the form of 40-foot trains and floral appliqués. Right now they’re focused on spring 2020—and they’re giving us plenty to look forward to. Lela Rose touts whimsical lace dresses; Reem Acra brings a heavenly display of tulle and chiffon; Amsale has classic gowns not unlike Meghan Markle’s own wedding dresses. Selena Gomez Threw Her Best Friend the Most Beautiful Bridal Shower

No matter how famous she gets—and she is, after all, a pop star and the former most-followed person on Instagram for two years running—Selena Gomez still makes the time to keep it real and kick back with some of her pre-fame best friends. Gomez makes trips back to Texas to catch up with the girls, whether it’s to invite them all to her pasta-themed birthday party on a yacht or get that ultimate signifier of a BFF bond: matching squad tattoos. And for her latest trip, over the weekend, she went all out for a very good reason. Gomez apparently helped throw Courtney Barry, one of her besties, a beautiful shower that was—luckily for us—documented on social media. The bride-to-be wrote on her own Instagram that “a few of my perfect girls threw me a perfect shower” along with a collage of Polaroid photos from the event where fans quickly spotted Gomez in a gorgeous red dress.

Also, wow, how gorgeous does the party look?

Fan accounts nabbed more footage from posts by other, less-famous guests at the shower.

To whoever decided on the ring pop flavors, we say, “Well done.”

Gomez and Barry go way back and have often posted about their squad’s escapades on social media.

And back to that one time they got tattoos: Gomez took the moment to expand on why exactly she and Barry will always be tight. “…My actual #1 @courtneyjbarry you are an incredible woman. The way you handle life’s most confusing moments is indescribable and graceful” she wrote. “You are moved by the littlest stories to the most heartbreaking ones, you will give someone your perfume if they say you smell nice, you are freaking hilarious and always stand firm in your faith, a loving sister, an amazing friend and a beautiful daughter. You are the definition of FEARFULLY and WONDERFULLY made baby! #1

We have a feeling this won’t be the last of the wedding festivities Gomez makes time for—and we can’t wait to see the pics.

Priyanka Chopra Explained Why She Wore a Marchesa Gown to Her Bridal Shower

Priyanka Chopra celebrated her bridal shower at Tiffany & Co. in New York over the weekend, and both the party and her dress—a Marchesa strapless gown with a feathered hem—made headlines. In a new interview with WWD, Chopra explained why she chose to wear a gown from the brand cofounded by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig.

“Georgina’s a friend of mine, and she has been,” Chopra told WWD. “Women supporting women: That’s what we’re all about.”

Marchesa, once a label frequently spotted on the red carpet, has been less prominent among the celebrity crowd since 2017, when the New York Times first published its report on Harvey Weinstein, then Chapman’s husband. (They have since separated.) The connection between the brand and the disgraced Hollywood producer came under scrutiny, and its presence on the awards-show circuit noticeably subsided.

Chopra explained to WWD that she thinks Chapman’s label shouldn’t be sullied by the controversy surrounding the designer’s former husband: “[It’s] not her fault. And I don’t think it’s right to take it out on a self-made woman what somebody in her life did. That’s the wrong attitude. I’ve known her for years, and that was a beautiful gown, and deserved to be worn by a bride-to-be. And it made me feel like a princess. It was the right choice.”

In recent months Marchesa has slowly begun to reemerge: Scarlett Johansson wore one of its gowns to the 2018 Met Gala (the first celebrity to wear the brand on a red carpet since the article was published in October 2017), and one of its designs was featured as part of a climactic scene in Crazy Rich Asians. Chapman also gave her first interview following the Weinstein allegations to Vogue in its June 2018 issue.

Celebrities who have worn Marchesa in 2018 have echoed Chopra’s sentiments. Following the Met Gala, Johansson released a statement about her look, saying: “I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful, and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers.”
