Taylor Swift Just Won't Let That National Snake Day Drama Die


Let me take you back exactly two years ago: Kanye West had just released a new song, “Famous,” in which he rapped about how he’s responsible for Taylor Swift’s fame. He specifically said, “I made that bitch famous,” a line Swift claimed she didn’t know about or approve of. Fast-forward to July 17, 2016: West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, uploaded a series of Snapchat videos that showed Swift having a conversation with West about “Famous.” Swift said she hadn’t approved of the phrase “that bitch,” which the Snapchat clips corroborate, but the damage was done. Twitter users took the videos as “proof” she lied about her knowledge of “Famous,” and they branded her a “snake.” It was all very petty and dumb and ridiculous.

So what did Swift do? She made snakes the focal point of her Reputation album era. Ever since she dropped “Look What You Made Me Do” in August 2017, Swift’s been all about the snakes: snake outfits, snake social media posts, snake images in her music videos—the works. She did this all in an attempt to reclaim her narrative, which she has. We get it! Snakes are cool now! The feud is over!

Well, not for Swift’s fans, at least. They took to social media yesterday—the two-year anniversary of #SnakeGate—demanding Kardashian “apologize” to Swift for what happened. The “Delicate” singer seemingly nodded to the anniversary herself too, wearing a snakeskin-patterned bag around New York City. Of course, that could’ve just been a coincidence.

But what she said during her concert last night definitely wasn’t. “Happy National Snake Day: my favorite day of the year,” Swift exclaimed Tuesday night while performing “LWYMMD” on her Cleveland Reputation Stadium Tour stop.

She also opened up about #SnakeGate in May when she kicked off her tour, saying, “A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media and it caught on. And then a lot of people called me a lot of names on social media. And I went through some really low times for a while because of it.”

So now we have definitive proof that, yes, Swift is still very much thinking about this hoopla. That bag might’ve actually been intentional, after all. Drama, drama, drama!

Here’s the thing: National Snake Day is pretty much what created Swift’s Reputation album, which is an absolute bop parade, so I can’t be 100 percent mad at it. That being said, Swift and Kardashian should probably just let dead dogs snakes lie at this point. They both are too paid and too iconic to worry about something that happened on Snapchat years ago. Their million-dollar empires and kids and British boyfriends who low-key look like Ken dolls are far more interesting talking points, TBH. After two years it’s high time for them—and their fandoms—to just shake it off.

Taylor Swift Fans Spotted Snake References in Her 'End Game' Music Video


Taylor Swift’s music video for “End Game” has dropped, and if you thought she was going to leave the snake motif in 2017, think again. In fact, the pop star now appears to be doubling down on the whole snake thing for the new year, featuring not one, not two, but at least four serpenty references in her new video. She puts a slew of snakes in very obvious places, making sure to include enough lingering close-ups for social media-bound screen-caps. And as usual, Twitter has spotted them all.

The premise of “End Game,” which features Future and Ed Sheeran, is that Swift is partying in three cities around the world with her friends. All of these parties take place at night, the implication being that Swift’s reputation is so bad she has to be ferried from soiree to soiree under the cover of darkness. The first snake pops up in city number 1, Miami. As Taylor Swift saunters down a hotel hallway with Future, a black earring wrapped with a silver snake can be spotted dangling from her ears. The second and third snakes reside in city number 2, Tokyo. Spotted by eagle-eyed Swifties @steady7phine and @rebekahswiftie, Swift enjoys a drink with a neon green snake-shaped stirrer while she parties with Ed Sheeran and zooms down the streets of Tokyo in a snakeskin-printed suit, respectively.

Swift, however, saves the best for last, in city number 3, London. In a very aggressive visual pun, the “Look What You Made Me Do” singer sits on a bar-top playing the mobile game “Snake”, while a clubgoer feeds her a drink. As explained by YouTuber Raphael Gomes and Twitter user @swiftienanami, Swift is, literally, “playing snake.” And, better yet, she’s on level “1-3” referencing her lucky number.

Swift has not been subtle about her snake-reclaiming branding, having decked herself in snake-shaped jewelry since before Reputation dropped, literally handling a serpent while sipping tea in her “Look What You Made Me Do” video, and even sending out a “ssssss”-filled card over the holidays. If you’re growing weary of the references, though, they’re probably not going to end any time soon. This is, after all, the woman who has written almost an entire album about a moment that’s ancient history in Kardashian-Jenner years.

Did Kim Kardashian Block the Snake Emoji From Her Instagram Account?


Let’s take a trip down memory lane to Sunday, July 17, 2016. It’s late. You’re about to crawl into bed and dream about work being canceled the next day, when all of a sudden your phone starts blowing up. “Kim exposed Taylor,” 19 people texted you simultaneously. What!? WTF does that mean? Exposed what? Exposed how? Were these people referring to Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift or just two random people named Kim and Taylor? So many questions, but you’re too tired to find the answers.

You begrudgingly log onto the Internet, and that’s when you see it: Kardashian’s lengthy Snapchat Story, which features her husband, Kanye West, and Swift having a detailed phone conversation about his song “Famous.” You’re immediately reminded of the drama that led to this phone conversation: Swift claimed she didn’t approve of West calling her a “bitch” on “Famous,” but both he and Kardashian said the opposite. According to them, Swift absolutely green-lit the lyric—and she was excited about the controversy.

Kardashian published this phone conversation to set the record straight, but it honestly didn’t confirm anything one way or the other. Yes, Swift and West talked about “Famous” during their chat, but not the “bitch” lyric specifically. All this proved was that Swift knew about the song in general, but not the details.

Of course, this didn’t stop the Internet from praising Kardashian for “exposing” Swift. The hashtag #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty quickly popped up on Twitter, and fans started spamming Swift’s account with the snake emoji to show their disdain.

Why the snake emoji? That’s what people were using at this time to bully Swift. This started happening after Swift’s ex-boyfriend, Calvin Harris, went on a Twitter rant about her, but it really ramped up after the Kardashian drama.

But now Swift is fighting back. On Monday (August 21), she started dropping mysterious snake videos on her Instagram page. These clips led to the announcement of her new album, Reputation, which seems to be a clap-back to everyone who trolled her last year—including the people who called her a “snake.”

She’s officially reclaimed the snake emoji as a positive symbol, and her fans are living for this. They’ve reclaimed the emoji, too—but now they’re using it against Kardashian. Just look at this recent message Kardashian posted to Twitter; several Swift fans replied to it with—you guessed it—snake emojis.

Is this petty? Absolutely. Kardashian, though, still isn’t standing for it. According to BuzzFeed, the reality TV star has blocked the snake emoji from her Instagram page—which means people can’t use it in her comments section. A BuzzFeed staffer wrote the snake emoji on Kardashian’s page but then noticed it disappeared when he tried to view it from a different account. Interesting.

Apparently, this is a thing you can do. If you go to Instagram’s settings and select “comments,” you can set a filter that prevents certain phrases from appearing on your page—including emojis.

So…did Kardashian do this because of Swift? Maybe. Maybe not. It’s totally possible she’s just afraid of snakes now and doesn’t want to see them. They are snakes, after all.
