Katy Perry had the world’s most dramatic reaction to a proposal—and it wasn’t even her own. On Monday night’s episode of American Idol, the singer literally fell to the floor and broke down in sobs after contestant Johanna Jones got engaged in front of everyone.
Jones had just finished singing her rendition of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” and she was in the middle of telling the judges she was “pretty dang in love” with her boyfriend, who allegedly couldn’t make her audition because of his final exams. Just then, said boyfriend popped up next to her and told her she was the love his life. He got down on one knee and he asked her to marry him, which sent Perry into full meltdown mode.
There were tears. There were howls. There was a theatrical slump to the ground. Perry’s fellow judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, both helped her up and made sure she was OK throughout the touching proposal. “Why won’t someone love me like that?” she wailed between sobs. Her reaction was so intense that a makeup artist had to come on set and touch up her mascara.
It was a lot, but Jones seemed happy to share the moment with Perry, who gushed over her ring.

The episode was filmed before Perry’s own boyfriend Orlando Bloom proposed to her, which has us wondering how she reacted when she was the one getting a diamond ring. If this engagement is any indication, there were many tears.
Even her Idol costars took the opportunity to teases her a little bit. Bryan tweeted some backstage footage of her crying her eyes out and wrote, “Thank goodness Orlando put a ring on it, @katyperry. Thought you weren’t going to make it there for a second.” We’ve got to say, we agree.
Jennifer Lopez and her number-one fan and fiancé, Alex Rodriguez, have been engaged for all of four days, but that’s already way too long to go without exact proposal details. Luckily, J.Lo just blessed us all by sharing some ultra-intimate photos of the exact moment A-Rod got down on one knee during their beach vacation in the Bahamas. Spoiler alert: The whole thing was beautiful.
On Instagram Lopez posted a couple of of images that capture her emotional reaction as Rodriguez presented her with a gigantic emerald-cut diamond ring. She didn’t say much else—the post’s caption reads, “3.9.19”—but the gorgeous photos pretty much speak for themselves.
Take a look:
The engagement came after the couple had been dating a little more than two years. They broke the news that they were getting hitched on Saturday by posting identical photos of J.Lo sporting her new massive rock, which her fiancé reportedly picked out himself. He shared the image with a caption that read, “She said yes.”
Earlier today, March 12, Rodriguez offered his own lovey-dovey message to fans on his IG stories. Over a shot of the two of them hugging after the proposal, he wrote, “There aren’t many words to share with you, only feelings. Gratitude. Excitement. And just…joy. We know there is work to do to keep building a family and future we can be proud of, and we can’t do it without all of you. We are thankful for all of your messages of love and congratulations.”

In the days before Rodriguez popped the question, he and Lopez shared a few photos of themselves lounging on boats and on the sand during their breezy Bahamas getaway. Somewhere in that time, it seems Rodriguez found the perfect spot on the beach to make Lopez his fiancée, and the moment couldn’t have been anymore adorable.
“Well, I may have dropped that hint. I think we had a conversation about it when we were dating and I’ve always known it had to be Tiffany,” Chopra said while attending a Tiffany & Co. event in New York City on Tuesday night (October 9). “I just knew it since I was a kid. First, it was Breakfast at Tiffany’s that did it for every girl in the world, and then, of course, Sweet Home Alabama came and put a stamp on it that it has to be Tiffany!”
She added, “Since I was a little girl, it was just something that was stuck in my head. And I may have said that, and I guess he remembered.”
While the Quantico actress did get her gorgeous Tiffany ring—it’s a large, cushion-cut diamond surrounded by smaller, tapered baguettes—the proposal didn’t actually happen just like it did in Sweet Home Alabama, despite previous reports. Over the summer, when news broke that Jonas had proposed to Chopra, multiple outlets reported that he popped the question in the middle of an actual Tiffany & Co. store that he rented out for the day, just as Patrick Dempsey’s character did when he proposed to Reese Witherspoon’s character in the 2002 film.
But Chopra set the record straight, telling People that while Jonas did, in fact, shut down an entire Tiffany store, she wasn’t in attendance. “No, I wasn’t there. He and his brothers went and did a whole thing to buy the ring for his future wife,” she said. Still a pretty movie-worthy moment!
Caution: Bachelor in Paradise finale spoilers ahead.
If Chris Randone and Krystal Nielson are looking for someone other than Bachelor in Paradise host Chris Harrison to officiate their wedding, they should look no further than fellow contestant John Graham. At the finale taping, Graham couldn’t stop raving about his support for the two. “They are head over heels for each other, and they are amazing together,” he told Glamour. “So supportive, and they’re moving in together. Everything about their relationship is awesome. I love them and support them 100%.” Even Tia got on the Chris and Krystal bandwagon when she told us that “as crazy as it is, they’re made for each other. I think they’ve got a damn good shot at this. It totally works.”
John and Tia should know. After all, they were with the pair for most of Paradise—the place where Chris and Krystal managed to rehab their image from their time on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. But what makes the pair certain they’ll thrive as a couple in the real world? And most important, what was up with Chris’ confusing proposal that made it seem like he might break up with Krystal? We caught up with the engaged couple to get the answers to all that and more.

Chris, you kind of made viewers think you might be breaking up with Krystal during your proposal. Why?
Chris Randone: I wanted to let her know that I was so in love with who she was on the inside—her heart.
Krystal Nielson: I was nervous!
Chris: It was just something where I wanted to keep her on her toes because she always keeps me on my toes. I didn’t want to leave here holding her hand. I wanted to leave here secure in her heart. That’s how I felt, and that’s how it came out.
Krystal: I was watching him, hearing him say the words, but his body language was so into me, I was like, “Uh, I hear what you’re saying but your body language isn’t matching up. So…” I knew he was messing with me. [Laughs] For a moment, though, I was like, “What?” Then I was assessing the situation and was like, “Nah… he’s playing with me. He loves me. He loves me.”
Chris: She’s incredible. There was a moment in our fantasy suite date where she was talking about an ex, but I thought she was talking about the situation between her and I, and I thought she was about to end it. I couldn’t breathe for like 15 seconds when she was talking to me, so I was like, I’m going to give her a taste of her own medicine… [Laughs]
Is that really why you messed with her at the proposal then?
Chris: No, no. I just had this whole thing…I took an entire day to figure out what I wanted to say. They felt like vows. I wanted to pinpoint all the amazing things she’s done for me and the transformation she’s helped me with, the evolution. All the key moments we had in paradise, even in the beginning episode—there was so much depth and so much conversation that really brought us together. And here we are.
Would you consider getting married on Paradise next year?
Chris: That’s a really good question because we definitely want a beach wedding. I’m going to support anything she wants.
Krystal: [Yes], barefoot in the sand!
Wherever it is, you need people to throw glitter instead of rice once you’re married.
Chris: If that’s what she wants, we’re getting pounds of glitter. That’s a very good advice. I’m all for it. Love it.
What makes you guys know that you found your person?
Chris: For me, it was our one-on-one date. We were dancing in the water, and she had this glow. She kept smiling, and I looked into her eyes and it was in that moment that it was the eyes of the woman I wanted to look into forever. 100 percent. I knew right then and there I was going to get down on one knee in paradise. I was already sold. It was just something I felt in the inside. She has a very genuine heart and her soul is so beautiful, I couldn’t imagine connecting with another woman or having love for another woman.
Krystal: We talked about this early on. The way things were going, I had a feeling he was going to leave without friends and have a bad experience. [Because of that] I wanted to give him some advice. It was the day after the second rose ceremony, and I wanted to see what he would do with [my advice]. He just stepped up and listened and applied the feedback. He got vulnerable. I love a man who can take ownership. Through his actions, he really won my heart over.
Finally, Krystal, how do you feel about the fact that a black box was used to cover up your butt most of the time on Paradise?
Krystal: [Laughs] I’m annoyed! I worked really hard on leg days specifically to rock those bikinis.
Chris: She wore some incredible bikinis, and it’s very unfortunate that the black box takes that away.
Krystal: But it looked good. I looked good. [Laughs]
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
Two beautiful people, a spontaneous six-week courtship, that massive diamond, and millions of viewers across America—Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson did The Bachelor better than ABC ever could.
Who cares if the romance lasts? Not me. In the less than two months since the couple forwent their individual rooms (and moved in together), the duo has gotten multiple tribute tattoos, posted several viral Instagrams, and given us the internet sensation that is BDE.
As for the rush, who knows. The world is on fire. We could die tomorrow. Ariana Grande has a new album to sell. Pete Davidson probably just wants us to smile more. If it’s a stunt, fine—but it feels good. All I want now is for the nuptials to be televised.
While I wait for that, I’d like to turn our collective attention to what happens after the final rose; conventional #BachNation wisdom has it that the new Bachelorette be chosen from the previous show. The pool thus narrowed, the real selection process kicks off: The Bachelorette needs tousled waves, a good attitude, and white teeth. She must be pleasant, but with some lovable dint or quirk. She’s a “goofball” or she’s “competitive” or she loves beer. She has oversize flannel button-downs. She looks stupendous in sequins.
What the Bachelorette needs to be above all is a woman the audience wants to root for—pitiable, but not pathetic. Wounded, but not broken. Chill. A catch. A babe.
So, a proposal: If the Bachelorette is a scorned lover with some wit and nice hair, let’s give Cazzie David the job.
A David-led season is the reprieve this tainted franchise needs to survive. She’s certified hilarious. She has great brows. Last month, she claimed she’d become a “human bottle of wine,” a feat which would well serve the drunken antics and general suspension of common sense that the show demands. Andrew Firestone could boast of his tire fortune, sure. And Lorenzo Borghese was a “prince.” But David is a genuine comedic heiress. A hometown date with Larry David? The fact that an event so ripe for ridicule hasn’t been an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm until now is criminal.
Plus, the timeline fits. Davidson and David broke up less than 12 weeks ago. (So the heartbreak is fresh, which we know is how ABC likes it.) Some 100 hours later, news spread that he’d moved on with Grande. Soon, he’d covered up a tattoo of David’s face and announced his plans to wed.
And though David wouldn’t choose her suitors, I feel certain her involvement would lead to a better slate of candidates. She once wore Rachel Green’s face on a shirt—and she looked good.
Go ahead and tell me it’ll never happen. That David is too cool. That she’ll meet someone on Tinder for celebrities or have her pal Lorde fix her up with a New Zealander and be just fine. I beg to differ. Cazzie David is a person whose ex has vowed eternal devotion to a ponytail icon in less time than it’s taken me to return all the J.Crew swimsuits I ordered this summer.
Cazzie David wants the roses.
She wants the one-on-ones and the cocktail parties, and here is the evidence.
Her most recent Instagram features a miniscule red bikini, waves that plead for a Pantene Pro-V sponsorship, an even tan, and the ultimate tell—an open (color-coordinated) sleeve of Haribo gummies. It screams, “I’m hot, but I love artificial food colors.” Or perhaps, “Behold, the revenge bod that red wine and fructose built.” It’s a billboard, and it declares, “I have that BDE too.”
Love her, but Becca Kufrin could never.
What I mean is: Chris Harrison, please call me. I need a cut of this deal.
Kit Harington and Rose Leslie made all Game of Thrones fans’ dreams come true when they confirmed their engagement last week. Not surprisingly, their announcement, which ran in The Times newspaper, was posh and classic. “The engagement is announced between Kit, younger son of David and Deborah Harington of Worcestershire, and Rose, middle daughter of Sebastian and Candy Leslie of Aberdeenshire,” the spot read. Quite frankly, it doesn’t get any more perfect than this. Two hot British actors taking out space in a newspaper to declare their love for each other? That’s what fairytales are made of.
But the exact proposal apparently wasn’t as perfect. In a new interview with Jonathan Ross, Harington reveals his engagement plans went awry when he asked the golden question a little too early.
“I did have some plans to do it, I was going to string up some lights in some trees and do all the romantic stuff but we were in the country and we were under this beautiful night sky and had a log fire burning and red wine and I blew my load early,” he said, according to The Sun.
Realizing his, erm, peculiar choice of words, he quickly clarified, “I was meant to do it the day after with the lights. What I meant to say was, I popped my question a bit early. Not blew my load…Sorry that’s a really bad expression.” See, guys! Even Jon Snow gets nervous.
The couple is now in full wedding-planning mode; Harington revealed to Ross he told the Game of Thrones producers that the show has to shut down for their wedding so everyone can attend. After all, Harington and Leslie did meet on set.
“I was like, ‘You need to factor in a Game of Thrones wedding by the way.’ They [the cast] have all got to be there so the whole thing has got to shut down.”
I’ll be waiting patiently by the mail for my invite.
