President Trump Condemns the Las Vegas Attack as an 'Act of Pure Evil'

President Donald Trump delivered a statement on Monday morning about the deadly shooting in Las Vegas that left at least 50 dead and injured more than 400 people. In his speech, Trump condemned the attack as an “act of pure evil” and praised law enforcement and first responders for their quick actions during the chaos.

“We are joined together today in sadness, shock, and grief,” Trump said. “Last night, a gunman opened fire on a large crowd at a country music concert in Las Vegas, Nevada … It was an act of pure evil.” Trump also said that the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are now working closely with local authorities on the investigation, and he plans to travel to Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with survivors, family members, first responders, and law enforcement.

“I want to thank the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and all of the first responders for their courageous efforts and for helping to save the lives of so many. The speed with which they acted is miraculous and prevented further loss of life,” he said.

Early Monday morning, Trump tweeted that he was sending his “warmest condolences” to those affected by the violence.

“We pray for the entire nation to find unity and peace, and we pray for the day that evil is banished and the innocent are safe,” Trump said. Following his remarks, he did not answer any questions.

My fellow Americans, we are joined together today in sadness, shock and grief. Last night a gunman opened fire on a large crowd at a country music concert in Las Vegas, Nevada. He brutally murdered more than 50 people, and wounded hundreds more. It was an act of pure evil. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are working closely with local authorities to assist with the investigation, and they will provide updates as to the investigation and how it develops.

I want to thank the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and all the first responders for their courageous efforts, and for helping to save the lives of so many. The speed with which they acted is miraculous, and prevented further loss of life. To have found the shooters so quickly after the first shots were fired is something for which we will always be thankful and grateful. It shows what true professionalism is all about.

Hundreds of our fellow citizens are now mourning the sudden loss of a loved one. A parent, a child, a brother or sister. We cannot fathom their pain, we cannot imagine their loss. To the families of the victims, we are praying for you and we are here for you, and we ask God to help see you through his very dark period. Scripture teaches us the Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. We seek comfort in those words, for we know that God lives in the hearts of those who grief.

To the wounded who are now recovering in hospitals, we are praying for our full and speedy recovery, and pledge to you our support from this day forward. In memory of the fallen, I have directed that our great flag be flown at half-staff. I will be visiting Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with law enforcement, first responders and the families of the victims.

In moments of tragedy and horror, America comes together as one. And it always has. We call upon the bonds that unite us: our faith, our family, and our shared values. We call upon the bonds of citizenship, the ties of community, and the comfort of our common humanity. Our unity cannot be shattered by evil. Our bonds cannot be broken by violence. And though we feel such great anger at the senseless murder of our fellow citizens, it is our love that defines us today, and always will forever.

In times such as these, I know we are searching for some kind of meaning in the chaos, some kind of light in the darkness. The answers do not come easy. But we can take solace knowing that even the darkest space can be brightened by a single light, and even the most terrible despair can be illuminated by a single ray of hope.

Melania and I are praying for every American who has been hurt, wounded or lost the ones they loved so dearly in this terrible, terrible attack. We pray for the entire nation to find unity and peace, and we pray for the day when evil is banished and the innocent are safe from hatred and from fear. May God bless the souls of the lives that are lost, may God give us the grace of healing, and may God provide the grieving families with strength to carry on. Thank you, God bless America.

The Latest Installment of President Trump and Melania's Awkward Body Language Is Here, and Twitter Is Cringing

Michelle and President Barack Obama gave us plenty of public displays of affection that made our hearts burst during their eight-year tenure in the White House. Fast forward to September 2017: nine months in to President Trump‘s administration, he and First Lady Melania have given us some very different body language: namely, recurring bouts of awkwardness.

There was the dance to Sinatra’s “My Way” at the president’s inauguration, where Melania “retracted” her head from her husband. A few months later, in May, there were two separate hand-swats by Melania as the two country-hopped on a whirlwind overseas tour: one in Israel as the couple walked the tarmac at Ben Gurion International Airport and another in Rome. (After he was denied the hand-hold, he put his hand on Melania’s butt instead.) Suffice it to say the First Couple doesn’t seem especially cozy.

Now there’s one more awkward hand-holding incident to add to the history books. And yes, Twitter is cringing.

At a dual appearance at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Friday, Melania introduced Trump to the stage to make a few remarks. But as he took the podium, instead of greeting Melania in the traditional sense—say, a kiss on the cheek—the pair took part in a very cold, uncomfortable handshake before what looks like Trump shooing her offstage.

The moment was captured in a video Irish journalist Catriona Perry posted to Twitter on Saturday. As a private citizen, my first thought as I watched is that at least they’re not publicly batting away physical contact anymore (that’s worth noting, right?).

As with anything Trump does, Twitter users made their thoughts on the awkward encounter known. Watch the video for yourself below—and then scroll down for some of Twitterer’s reactions to the moment.

Chrissy Teigen, naturally, had something to say, as did a few of her followers:

A few questioned if that is simply the done thing in the frigid upper echelons of society:

Others really noticed the shooing bit:

Some echoed earlier hashtags of #FreeMelania and #SadMelania:

Others recreated the moment, to stunning effect:

President Trump Is the First President in 23 Years to Skip the Kennedy Center Honors

PHOTO: Aaron P. Bernstein/Getty Images

After an incredibly tense week at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, including highly charged fallout over President Trump‘s offensive comments and tweets following the rallies and violence in Charlottesville, the White House announced Saturday that neither Trump nor First Lady Melania Trump will attend the 40th Kennedy Center Honors on December 3. The Trumps will also take a pass on hosting the traditional reception at the White House prior to the main event.

“The president and first lady have decided not to participate in this year’s activities to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction. First lady Melania Trump, along with her husband President Donald J. Trump, extend their sincerest congratulations and well wishes to all of this year’s award recipients for their many accomplishments,” the White House said in a statement, according to the New York Times.

Since 1978, the Kennedy Center Honors have been awarded to individuals for lifetime achievements in the arts. The five 2017 honorees are producer and writer Norman Lear, singer Gloria Estefan, singer LL Cool J, dancer Carmen De Lavallade, and singer-songwriter Lionel Richie. Prior to Trump’s announcement that he wouldn’t attend, three out of the five honorees—Carmen De Lavallade, Norman Lear, and Lionel Richie—had expressed intent to boycott the event.

As de Lavallade, 86, said in a written statement to the Washington Post on Thursday: “In light of the socially divisive and morally caustic narrative that our current leadership is choosing to engage in, and in keeping with the principles that I and so many others have fought for, I will be declining the invitation to attend the reception at the White House.”

Trump’s decision to skip the event makes him the first president in 23 years to miss it. In 1994, President Clinton was en route to Budapest for a conference; President George Bush was at a summit in Malta in 1989; and in 1979, President Carter opted to skip because of the Iran hostage crisis. President Trump also skipped out on the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April, opting to hold a rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, instead.

Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein and President Deborah F. Rutter tweeted in a joint statement that the Trumps’ absence “ensures the Honors gala remains a deservingly special moment for the Honorees.”

The Trumps’ declined invite hopefully means that those who have made incredible contributions to the arts over their lifetimes will feel comfortable attending, as they more than deservedly should.

Brigitte Macron Addresses Age Gap Between Her and French President Emmanuel Macron

PHOTO: Morris MacMatzen/Getty

Even before Emmanuel Macron was elected president of France, his relationship with wife Brigitte Macron has been the object of close scrutiny and an exhausting amount of ageism due to the fact that Brigitte is 24 years older than her husband. Although Emmanuel spoke out earlier this year about the double standard that makes his marriage a topic of discussion, as opposed to that of Donald and Melania Trump, who have the exact same age gap between them (but in reverse), Brigitte has stayed largely silent — until now.

In a new interview with French Elle, the French first lady reveals that she was putting her own happiness ahead of the rest of society’s opinions when she decided to pursue a relationship with Emmanuel, whom she met while teaching drama at his high school, according to Elle‘s translation. “There are times in your life where you need to make vital choices,” she said. “And for me, that was it. So, what has been said over the 20 years, it’s insignificant. Of course, we have breakfast together — me and my wrinkles, him with his youth — but it’s like that.”

The 64-year-old added, “If I did not make that choice, I would have missed out on my life. I had a lot of happiness with my children and, at the same time, felt I had to live ‘this love,’ as Prévert used to say, to be fully happy.” Of the increased speculation her 10-year marriage received throughout this year’s election, Brigitte said, “I ended by telling myself, OK, I do not take it well, but I have to deal with it. After, it will pass.”

Shortly after his election victory, Emmanuel, 39, spoke out against the misogyny he and Brigitte have endured, as well as the “rampant homophobia” inherent in speculation that he’s gay and his marriage is a sham. “If I had been 20 years older than my wife, nobody would have thought for a single second that I couldn’t be [an intimate partner],” he told Le Parisien. “It’s because she is 20 years older than me that lots of people say, ‘This relationship can’t be tenable.'”

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only sexist incident Brigitte Macron has had to deal with since entering the public eye alongside her husband. Earlier this summer, when the Trumps met up with the Macrons in France, President Trump interrupted his own conversation with Emmanuel to turn to Brigitte and offer his totally unsolicited opinions about her appearance, saying, “You’re in such good shape,” and then adding, “Beautiful.”

And just last week, Brigitte’s attempts to take a more active role in her husband’s administration were shot down when the French government decided not to give her an official political title, budget, or salary. Although some argued that elevating the first lady position from an honorary to an official one smelled a lot like nepotism, others believed that refusing to give Brigitte official powers was a misogynistic attempt to keep her in a subordinate role to her husband.
