Donald Trump Misspelled Melania's Name While Congratulating Her, and It's the 'Covfefe' of 2018

After undergoing a successful kidney procedure on Monday that left her in the hospital for five nights, First Lady Melania Trump has returned to the White House. According to a Saturday morning statement from Melania’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham: “She is resting comfortably and remains in high spirits. Our office has received thousands of calls and emails wishing Mrs. Trump well, and we thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out.”

President Donald Trump also took to Twitter—as he’s wont to do—to celebrate her recovery: “Great to have our incredible First Lady back home in the White House. Melanie is feeling and doing really well. Thank you for all of your prayers and best wishes!”

Notice something wrong here? Her name is Melania, not, Melanie. Now is autocorrect be to blame? Sure. Is it still pretty cringe-funny? Well….yes.

Luckily, someone caught the misspelling quickly: The President deleted and re-posted the tweet with the right spelling.

However, Twitter is still abuzz with hilarious reactions about the 2018 version of his infamous “covfefe” moment.

“Hey don’t get so mad about Trump misspelling Melania’s name. It could happen to anyone. – Mayghen’s husband,” one user signed off.

“Misspelling her name as Melanie is the way Melania knows he actually wrote the tweet himself,” wrote another user.

Some came in with a royal wedding roast: “Maybe their invitation to the #royalwedding was lost because it was addressed to Donald and Melanie.” (To be clear, no foreign leaders were invited to the royal wedding.)

Oh, Twitter—always there for the big moments. In the meantime, here’s hoping Melania continues to have a speedy recovery.

Watch Donald Trump Try to Hold Melania's Hand Yet Again (Yep, It's Awkward)

“Donald and Melania Trump Awkwardly Holding Hands” is officially back on the air after a brief hiatus. And it’s no less cringe-inducing than the last time you saw it.

You may remember the first installment, back in January 2017, on the eve of his inauguration. The President-Elect attempted to grab his wife’s hand as they descended the stairs of Air Force One only to have her gently dismiss the gesture. Then there was the time last, in May, when she fully swatted his hand away while on a tarmac in Israel—and the world (and social media) went nuts. In February, FLOTUS eluded his grasp yet again with an impressive swerve, causing him to cover up the snub with a behind-the-back grab maneuver.

And here we are again today, on the South Lawn of the White House. The President and the First Lady were welcoming French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, for the administration’s first state visit when cameras captured footage of Trump making a move. It…didn’t go well, though she did eventually lightly grab his hand. Frankly, these are getting tough for any of us to watch.

See for yourselves below. It’s incredibly awkward.

The Internet is having a field day, as one would expect with one user writing, “Poor Melania, she looked like she was holding back tears under her hat as she held Trump’s hand.” Another said, “It’s almost like he thanks her at the end when she caves to letting him hold her hand. But I know he’d never do something like that.”

Of course, we have no idea what really goes on in the personal relationship between President Trump and the First Lady, but each incident of awkward hand-holding stands in stark contrast to their predecessors, the Obamas, who were often quite affectionate with each other in public.

The Latest Installment of President Trump and Melania's Awkward Body Language Is Here, and Twitter Is Cringing

Michelle and President Barack Obama gave us plenty of public displays of affection that made our hearts burst during their eight-year tenure in the White House. Fast forward to September 2017: nine months in to President Trump‘s administration, he and First Lady Melania have given us some very different body language: namely, recurring bouts of awkwardness.

There was the dance to Sinatra’s “My Way” at the president’s inauguration, where Melania “retracted” her head from her husband. A few months later, in May, there were two separate hand-swats by Melania as the two country-hopped on a whirlwind overseas tour: one in Israel as the couple walked the tarmac at Ben Gurion International Airport and another in Rome. (After he was denied the hand-hold, he put his hand on Melania’s butt instead.) Suffice it to say the First Couple doesn’t seem especially cozy.

Now there’s one more awkward hand-holding incident to add to the history books. And yes, Twitter is cringing.

At a dual appearance at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Friday, Melania introduced Trump to the stage to make a few remarks. But as he took the podium, instead of greeting Melania in the traditional sense—say, a kiss on the cheek—the pair took part in a very cold, uncomfortable handshake before what looks like Trump shooing her offstage.

The moment was captured in a video Irish journalist Catriona Perry posted to Twitter on Saturday. As a private citizen, my first thought as I watched is that at least they’re not publicly batting away physical contact anymore (that’s worth noting, right?).

As with anything Trump does, Twitter users made their thoughts on the awkward encounter known. Watch the video for yourself below—and then scroll down for some of Twitterer’s reactions to the moment.

Chrissy Teigen, naturally, had something to say, as did a few of her followers:

A few questioned if that is simply the done thing in the frigid upper echelons of society:

Others really noticed the shooing bit:

Some echoed earlier hashtags of #FreeMelania and #SadMelania:

Others recreated the moment, to stunning effect:
