The White House Just Announced a Plan to Reunite Separated Migrant Families


On Saturday evening, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services made a joint statement outlining a plan to reunite 2,000-plus migrant kids with their families after being separated at the border. Before now, the White House reportedly had no formal plan or protocol in place to reunite the families.

The announcement comes after days of backlash and public outcry regarding the administration’s “zero tolerance” policy of criminally prosecuting all adults crossing into the U.S. illegally—including those seeking asylum. It also comes after a June 20 executive order to stop separating families, though it opens the door for a lot of questions about where families will be housed and for how long.

Before, those apprehended crossing the border were referred to an immigration judge after being held in immigration detention, writes Vox. Under Trump’s criminal prosecution policy, adults are sent to a federal jail and then brought before a federal judge—hence the separation, as you can’t have kids in a federal jail. Kids are sent instead to mass detention centers or foster care, sometimes thousands of miles away, sometimes without parents being informed where—or why—their children had been taken.

The DHS and DHHS’ joint statement states that the two departments “have a process established to ensure that family members know the location of their children and have regular communication after separation to ensure that those adults who are subject to removal are reunited with their children for the purposes of removal.” It also states that the government knows where each child is while separated from his or her parents.

“There will be a small number of children who were separated for reasons other than zero tolerance that will remain separated: generally only if the familial relationship cannot be confirmed, we believe the adult is a threat to the safety of the child, or the adult is a criminal alien,” the statement continues.

Once adults are slated for deportation—which, as The Cut points out, “can take anywhere from days to years”—they can try to find their child using an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement hotline that begins the process of reunification.

As of Friday, the statement says, only 522 children had been reunited with their parents.

The New 'Ocean's 8' Trailer Will Make You Really Want to Plan a Heist With Sandra Bullock


I’m just going to lay all my cards out on the table. I never really cared about the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. Something about a bunch of macho dudes robbing a casino just struck me as blah. Now I know what those movies were missing: Rihanna. And Sandra Bullock. And Cate Blanchett. And Anne Hathaway. And Awkwafina. And Mindy Kaling. And Sarah Paulson. And Helena Bonham Carter, of course.

You see, these actors are at the center of the all-female Ocean’s Eleven reboot—titled Ocean’s 8—which is why my opinion on the franchise has changed. Not only do I want to see Ocean’s 8 multiple times, I’m also now dying to plan a heist with them all.

Especially after I watched the latest full trailer for Ocean’s 8, which hit the Internet on Thursday (April 12). I’m so invested in Bullock’s character Debbie Ocean, Danny’s sister who decides to heist the annual Met Gala with the help of six other women. Meanwhile, Hathaway plays Daphne Kluger, the wealthy celebrity whose $150 million necklace Debbie wants to steal. Watch the new trailer, below:

I’m not sure what about this trailer excites me the most: Hathaway’s deliciously over-the-top portrayal of Daphne, Blanchett’s shaggy blond hairstyle, Rihanna being a computer wiz, or Paulson’s glowing presence. (The American Horror Story alum has my favorite line in one of the teasers. “This is the Met Gay-la, after all” she says to a Very Important Woman working for the event. “Gah-la. The Met Gah-la,” she corrects Paulson. That’s literally me anytime I try to be fancy.)

300 Powerful Hollywood Women Just Launched Time's Up, a Massive Anti-Harassment Action Plan


Women in Hollywood have had enough of sexual harassment—whether it’s in Hollywood or for their sisters in agricultural, service, and domestic industries. On Monday, more than 300 women working in the entertainment industry, including actresses, agents, writers, directors, and producers, announced an ambitious action plan called Time’s Up Now, with the goal of ending the imbalance of gender power across all industries. According to The New York Times, a few of the women who helped start the plan are actresses America Ferrera, Eva Longoria, Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman, Rashida Jones, Emma Stone, Kerry Washington, and Reese Witherspoon, along with producer Shonda Rhimes and lawyers Tina Tchen and Nina L. Shaw.

“The struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard and acknowledged in male-dominated workplaces must end; time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly,” the group wrote in an open letter posted to their dedicated site, TimesUpNow.com.

The letter further explained that the group was moved by another open letter it received in November on behalf of 700,000 female farmworkers who said they stood with the actresses and felt their same pain.

“To the members of Alianza and farmworker women across the country, we see you, we thank you, and we acknowledge the heavy weight of our common experience of being preyed upon, harassed, and exploited by those who abuse their power and threaten our physical and economic security,” the Time’s Up Now letter read.

To fight gender inequality and all the trappings that come with it, the group has come up with several ways to fight the battle—including a legal defense fund that is already backed by $13 million in donations. This, the Times explained, will be used to assist less-privileged women to protect themselves after incidences of sexual misconduct. Moreover, the group announced it will work on passing legislation that will penalize companies that remain tolerant of “persistent harassment” and use nondisclosure agreements to intimidate victims. Right now, the group isn’t centralized around a particular leader, and it’s also run completely by volunteers.

The open letter also explained that the group is asking women in Hollywood to wear black at the Golden Globes and to speak out about sexual harassment at the red carpet. As Longoria told The Times, the majority of women contacted about the all-black protest have signed on.

“For years, we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colors and our beautiful faces and our glamour,” Longoria said. “This time the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”

As Rhimes further noted to the paper, “It’s very hard for us to speak righteously about the rest of anything if we haven’t cleaned our own house.” She added, “If this group of women can’t fight for a model for other women who don’t have as much power and privilege, then who can?”

The group isn’t just looking to protect the rights of women, but also aims to protect all marginalized groups including minorities, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. “No one wants to look back and say they stood at the sidelines,” Lena Waithe, one of Master of None‘s stars, added.

France Just Announced a National Plan to Combat Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women


On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a national plan to combat sexism, sexual violence, and domestic violence against women. The policies he outlined include simplifying the process for reporting rape, implementing additional public safety measures for women, and educating schoolchildren about pornography. Meanwhile, women across France gathered for demonstrations against domestic and sexual violence in a rousing observance of Saturday’s designation as the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women.

During his presidential campaign in 2016, Macron made gender equality a part of his platform. So although his policies weren’t directly prompted by the reignited #MeToo movement—or France’s viral equivalent: “#BalanceTonPorc”, meaning “out your pig”—that picked up after the wave of allegations against Harvey Weinstein, they’re being brought forth at a time when sexual assault and sexual violence is at the forefront of an incredibly necessary cultural conversation.

In Saturday’s speech, Macron began by observing a minute of silence for the 123 women killed in France by a partner or ex-partner in 2016. According to the BBC, an additional 225,000 were physically or sexually abused by their spouses, although fewer than 20 percent filed a report.

“It’s indispensable that the idea of shame changes sides, that the Republic cleanses its own concept of shame; that the everyday criminals who harass, insult, touch, attack never be excused, but identified, vilified, brought to justice, condemned as firmly as they should be,” he said. “France must no longer be one of those countries where women live in fear.”

As a part of the initial measures to protect women and make reporting sex crimes easier, Macron announced that women who experience sexual assault and harassment will be allowed to make their first statement from their homes—prior to bringing criminal charges up with the police—through a 24-hour online service. Through it, they’ll be able to speak to trained police and find out how to report their attack.

Public safety measures are also included in the plans. “On demand” bus stops are in the works to allow women to stop a bus at any point along a route so they can get home safely at night. An app for victims of online stalking will also be available.

According to the BBC, Macron also announced an awareness campaign to educate secondary school students about pornography.

Calling France’s society “sick with sexism,” he announced further proposals for laws that criminalize street harassment as well as extending the statute of limitation for the rape of minors from 20 years to 30 years.

Macron also stated that he wants to set the country’s age of sexual consent at 15, which, according to the BBC, aligns with the country’s legally fixed age of sexual maturity (France currently has no age of consent).

According to Reuters, French feminist group Osez le Féminisme stated that the only thing standing in the way of making these changes a reality is adequate funding from the government—which they don’t currently believe is the reality. “Without funding, any communication, training, awareness or help plan for the victims will be useless,” the group said.

France is notable, however, for making an effort to change the culture surrounding sexual and domestic violence. Back in America, U.S. President Donald Trump—who has been accused of sexual assault himself—recently refused to defend Alabama’s Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, who multiple women have said pursued sexual relations with them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.
