Selena Gomez Is Being Accused of Lip-Syncing Her American Music Awards 2017 Performance

To many, Selena Gomez’ first performance in over a year was a stunning rendition of her new single, “Wolves.” Others, however, are accusing her of lip-syncing the whole thing.

After taking time off to recover from a kidney transplant, Selena returned to the stage for the first time post-operation on Sunday during the 2017 American Music Awards. But while she delivered a dramatic production with energetic choreography and elaborate special effects, including a fog machine, a forest backdrop, and a literal car on stage, some viewers on Twitter believed those elements were intended to distract from the pop-star allegedly not singing at all.

“I love Selena Gomez, but she made it so obvious that she lip synced through that whole performance hence why she had her head down and hair covering her face for 99% of the performance,” wrote one user. “The girl can’t sing live, so I don’t know why she just can’t admit it instead of lip syncing.”

“Wow, that fake car hit Selena Gomez so hard she had to lip sync her song,” snarked another. “Poor girl.”

Others, though, say she wasn’t lip-syncing but may have run into some technical difficulties while singing.

“SELENA GOMEZ DIDN’T LIP SYNC SHE USED A FILTERED MIC FOR THE EFFECT LIKE SHE USED FOR THE SONG YOU GUYS I SWEAR STFU AND LET PEOPLE LIVE MY GOD DO YOU HAVE BRAIN CELLS MY GOD GET A JOB STAY AWAY FROM HER SHE’S JUST LIVING HER TRUTH SPREADING LOVE TAKE A SEAT AND LEARN SOMETHING,” wrote one enthusiastic fan.

Another viewer was wondering whether Selena’s backing track was simply too loud and overpowered her vocals.

“Wait wait wait… okay y’all not trying to bash on anyone’s performance, but was that a lip sync slip up or like some really loud back up vocals in Selena Gomez ‘s performance likeeeee…. genuinely asking,” the fan tweeted.

There’s yet another group of viewers who attribute what they characterize as a lackluster performance, lip-sync or no lip-sync, to a rumored panic attack prior to Selena’s appearance on-stage.

“The fact that Selena had a panic attack before going on stage and then actually performing is both heartbreaking but shows just how strong she really is @selenagomez I love you so much baby” wrote one person.

One user pointed out the “sad” face she made at the end of her performance as proof she was experiencing some challenges while singing, asking whether that was from her illness or mean comments online.

Prior to the performance, Selena shared an Instagram of herself rehearsing, explaining how the award show held a special place in her heart. “My first performance in over a year… the AMAs have been a place where I’ve shared some of my most intimate moments. Heart wants what it wants, after treatment and now Wolves,” she wrote in the video’s caption.

Currently, none of the rumors have been confirmed or denied, and Selena has yet to address her AMAs performance in any way. Until she does, it’s important to keep in mind that those with theories are still just speculating, and rude or abusive comments online are never OK.

Dewan Tatum Wore a Sparkly Naked Dress to the 2017 American Music Awards

If KiraKira is looking for a spokesperson, Jenna Dewan Tatum should be at the top of its list. On Sunday night, rather than just wearing her already glittery dress as-is on the 2017 AMAs red carpet, the dancer and actress upped her game with the help of the sparkle-boosting app.

Dewan Tatum shared a video from her car on the way to the awards show on Instagram in which she shows off her OTT look: a nude gown featuring a plunging V-neck and a long, trailing train and covered in sparkly silver stripes, which she further blinged out by applying the KiraKira filter. “Literally waited all year for the right dress to use KiraKira with. Thank you @amas, thank you,” the World of Dance judge captioned the video, which ends with her blowing a kiss to the camera while her eyes and earrings also fill with sparkles.

PHOTO: Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

The actress is a pro at naked dresses, having previously worn a sheer showstopper to the premiere of Kingsman: The Golden Circle. And despite not having used KiraKira on a dress before, Dewan Tatum has definitely had some fun with the app, previously using it to document a pair of boots gifted to her from Jennifer Lopez.

Although Dewan Tatum appeared to attend the AMAs sans husband Channing Tatum, she shared a few photos to her Instagram Stories earlier in the day showing that she prepped for the show with their four-year-old daughter, Everly. In one, the mother-daughter duo relax in bed, with Everly resting her head on her robe-clad mom’s shoulder. “AMAs pre show,” Dewan Tatum captioned the sweet pic. In another, Everly plays with a NARS makeup palette while her mom gets glammed up.

Dewan Tatum also shared another video from the car on the way to the event on her Story, in which her driver gives her some excellent advice: “Relax, stay grounded, and be you, because being you is really what people love,” he says, before the Step Up star replies, “Preach, Leslie.”

Clearly, even stars like Jenna Dewan Tatum need the occasional pre-show pep talk and selfie.

Pink and Kelly Clarkson Perform a Cover of R.E.M.’s 'Everybody Hurts' at American Music Awards 2017

Two of the music world’s strongest women combined forces for the first time on Sunday night in one powerful duet. To open the American Music Awards, Pink and Kelly Clarkson sang a moving cover of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” that paid respect to everyone affected by the tragedies of 2017.

“This year, more than perhaps any other in recent history, we needed the power of music to help us heal, from hurricanes, wildfires, hate, hatred-fueled violence. 2017 was a year that tested our faith,” began Jamie Foxx, before he introduced the police officers, EMTs, and other first responders who work tirelessly to save people this year. “In these moments of crisis, heroes emerge. With us tonight are some of the first responders who ran toward the danger, when it would have been so easy to run away.”

“As this year comes to a close, we look forward to 2018 with hope,” Foxx continued. “For even as we mourn those who were lost, we know this: Together, our strength will pull us through. Together, we shall overcome the pain. Together, we can unite as a people and as a nation. Here to pay respect to all those affected by the events of 2017 are two of the world’s most powerful voices coming together for the first time: Pink and Kelly Clarkson.”

The two women joined each other onstage, collaborating for the first time in a stirring rendition of R.E.M.’s hit. Pink opened the song, striding regally across the stage in a leather moto jacket and a black gown covered with red flowers. She was then joined by Clarkson, looking just as queenly in a gold-stitched black gown befitting of her diva status. They belted out the final notes of their emotional duet to a standing ovation.

The two legendary singers had been fans of each other’s work long before this collaboration. Prior to their performance, they tweeted support at each other, each insisting the other was cause for nervous excitement.

“Gonna play it super cool whilst singing with @Pink this Sunday at the #AMAs ….but know on the inside I will be freaking the &$@! out ? #oneofthegreatestvocalistsofourgeneration #sheissorad #sundayissofarfromnow,” Clarkson tweeted on Thursday.

Pink replied, “You’re joking! I am humbly prepared to be outsung:) I adore you and I cannot wait.”

Then, earlier Sunday, both singers captioned the same rehearsal photo with some awwwww-inducing mutual fangirling.

Later on, both vocalists will sing solo. Pink is expected to treat viewers to the title track of her new album, Beautiful Trauma, a performance that will involve an aerial performance by the singer. It’s unclear what Clarkson will perform, but whatever it is, it will no doubt be just as potent as her duet with Pink.

2017 American Music Awards: Every Single Outfit Tracee Ellis Ross Wore to Host

In the past week, we’ve discovered that Tracee Ellis Ross isn’t only the life coach we didn’t know we needed, but also the ideal award show host. That’s right, the Golden Globe-winning actress is the right combination of charisma, comedic timing, and energy to keep us tuned in for a three-hour-plus program, but she can also slay multiple outfit changes like it’s nothing. (Well, stylist Karla Welch certainly lent a helping hand.) To go from a long-sleeved, totally-sequined Stella McCartney gown to a sculptural, bronze pleated dress by Roland van der Kemp, to then segue into vintage Diana Ross-inspired looks, including a white suit that was a direct callback to the time her mom famously twinned with Michael Jackson in 1981 (featuring the original bedazzled blouse, dug out from Ross’ garage, to boot), and look impeccable every single time? Only Tracee.

The Black-ish star followed in AMAs host tradition and orchestrated multiple outfit changes throughout the night. (As a refresher: Jennifer Lopez clocked in 12 in 2015; Gigi Hadid had six last year.) In total, Ellis Ross donned 11 separate lewks throughout the broadcast, each one instantly iconic. (The only one not pictured below: a long-sleeved metallic dress she wore to introduce P!nk’s performance.) Relive the greatness that was her host wardrobe, right here.

The American Music Awards 2017 Best Moments—and the One Absolute Worst

The American Music Awards has emerged as one of the most exciting, dynamic events of the year. It was here where Selena Gomez opened up about her lupus-triggered anxiety and depression, Justin Bieber gave a performance that made literally everyone cry, and Gigi Hadid did a Melania Trump impression that broke the Internet. There’s something about the AMAs that’s looser—and more fun—than other awards shows, which might explain its appeal. After all, who doesn’t love a night where Gomez’s blond hair is the focal point?

By the way, that last one is literally true: Gomez debuted a new, blond look at tonight’s American Music Awards, and people are obsessing over it. They’re also buzzing about her performance with Marshmello, as well as Tracee Ellis Ross’ hosting cred and Pink and Kelly Clarkson’s duet. These moments, below, are the highlights of the 2017 American Music Awards. Oh, and there’s one lowlight we have to address too. Read on.

Best

Jamie Foxx’s emotional opening speech, which featured first responders.

He said a rousing few words about the dumpster fire that was 2017 and how we need to have hope going into the next year. “Together, we can unite as a people and as a nation,” he said.

Pink and Kelly Clarkson’s performance of “Everybody Hurts” by REM.

The two pop superstars joined forces shortly after Foxx’s speech for a searing rendition of the iconic 1992 song. Their vocals, naturally, were on point, and their synergy was palpable. It was the perfect way to kick off the show, and truly necessary catharsis from the horrific events that happened this year. The crowd gave them a standing ovation.

The first dress host Tracee Ellis Ross wore during her opening monologue.

Opulence! You own everything! Everything is yours!

The mama/daughter love between Tracee Ellis Ross and Diana Ross all evening.

Let’s petition for a Freaky Friday remake starring them.

Demi Lovato takes on the haters with her “Sorry Not Sorry” performance.

Before Lovato hit the stage, a barrage of mean tweets about her appeared on screen—but she quickly reclaimed the narrative and gave a performance that slayed our souls.

Nick Jonas delivers routine sexiness during his performance of “Find You.”

Oh, and the song is also a bop.

Shawn Mendes’ smile.

Yes, his smile was a highlight. Don’t @ me.

Selena Gomez’s eerie-but-beautiful performance of “Wolves.”

She was essentially a final girl in a horror movie, and we lived for it.

Christina Aguilera’s tribute to Whitney Houston and The Bodyguard.

Her vocals gave the audience chills, though not everyone was on board.

Lady Gaga’s colorful performance of “The Cure.”

It was the most vibrant moment from the evening. Gaga wore actual ornaments on her face. I love icons!

Pink defies gravity (yet again).

She performed her new song “Beautiful Trauma” while twirling on the side of a building. Literally.

BTS. Just BTS.

Every American is a fan of this band after tonight.

Diana Ross’ performance.

She was honored with a lifetime achievement award during tonight’s show, and she brought the house down with a medley of her greatest hits.

And…the Worst Moment

The fact there were next to no women in the general award categories.

Host Tracee Ellis Ross noted that tonight’s American Music Awards would celebrate the many strong, talented women in the music industry, but there was a major problem with that sentiment: There were barely any female nominees. In fact, there wasn’t a single woman in the Artist of the Year category. Not one. How could the AMAs celebrate women tonight if it didn’t even bother to nominate them?

Watch Christina Aguilera's Performance Tribute to Whitney Houston at American Music Awards 2017

Twenty-five years ago, the late Whitney Houston starred in a now-iconic movie called The Bodyguard and with it came the song that is now her trademark, “I Will Always Love You.” It’s a song that’s quintessentially Whitney: the dramatics, the opulence, the soaring high note at the end. Many view “I Will Always Love You” as Houston’s greatest vocal feat, which is impressive seeing as how she’s arguably the greatest vocalist of all time.

And tonight at the American Music Awards, another vocal powerhouse sang the song and paid tribute to both Houston and The Bodyguard: Christina Aguilera. Yes, Aguilera, clad in a black outfit and her hair slicked back, took the stage at the AMAs to give a special performance honoring the song and film that catapulted Houston into a fame stratosphere only a few celebrities reach. Aguilera whipped through several tunes from The Bodyguard, including “I Will Always Love You” and Houston’s cover of “I’m Every Woman,” which became a feminist anthem in the early 1990s.

The crowd was visibly moved by Aguilera’s performance—cameras caught several celebrities tearing up. Even Pink, who famously feuded with Aguilera in the early 2000s, couldn’t help but be moved by the performance. (If you follow celebrity news, though, then you know Pink and Aguilera put their beef to bed. “We were super young and super new at the whole thing, and I think I’m an alpha, and she’s an alpha,” Pink said about their up-and-down relationship a few weeks ago.)

Check out some clips of the performance, below:

The Twitter reactions, though, weren’t as kind. Several people took issue with the fact Aguilera, a white woman, performed the tribute.

Others simply didn’t think she was up to par with Houston.
