Solange Knowles Just Dropped Some Powerful New Music

Solange Knowles’ album A Seat at the Table was one of the best records of 2016. The LP was both sonically breathtaking—a lush collection of funk and psychedelic-soul—and culturally important. Like her sister Beyoncé’s album Lemonade, A Seat at the Table is a deep exploration into the lives of black women—their triumphs, their hardships, and their lived experiences. It’s a record that takes on new meaning with every listen.

And now Solange has given us another gift: fresh new music she just dropped this week, according to W magazine. On Friday morning (August 25) the singer debuted a new online “dossier” called “Seventy States,” which includes a slew of goodies: unreleased content from A Seat at the Table, new poetry, a never-before-seen original performance, and yes, new music. You can check out the exciting package, in full, right here.

If you’re a Solange fan, then you know “Seventy States” isn’t the only project she’s announced this week. The 31-year-old revealed she is headed to Marfa, Texas, to perform “Scales,” a combination of arrangements from A Seat at the Table, alongside a new art installation by Donald Judd. She also just launched a new performance art tour called Orion’s Rise, which will make stops in New York City, Berkeley, California, and Washington, D.C.

These new endeavors come on the heels of Solange wiping her Twitter clean in response to the racially-charged violence that happened in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend. “Been trying to study myself. Been trying to practice self preservation,” she wrote on Instagram Stories shortly after the attacks. “My son’s first day of school has been in the midst of seeing these bullsht images that still tell him this system was built to be against him. How mofos supposed to have a fresh start with education, seeing this sht?”

All the Signs Taylor Swift Is Releasing New Music Today

It’s been three long years since Taylor Swift released her last album 1989. The record, which won basically all the Grammy Awards in 2016, was more than just a collection of catchy pop songs: It was an event. Swift is one of those rare musicians whose work takes on a life of its own. Every music video, tour outfit, and promotional performance was larger than life; it really felt like we were in the presence of something special—something that was only going to happen once in our lifetime. Truthfully, the only other modern artist who has this same level of influence is Beyoncé. They sit at a very small table of artists who are more than just artists: They’re icons.

That’s why the wait for Swift’s next album has been agonizing—but it looks like new music is finally upon us. All the signs point to today, August 21—the day of the solar eclipse—as the day Swift ushers in her sixth album era. Here’s why:

Swift fans have been thinking for months now that her new music will be space and time-themed—so what better day to begin promo for it than the day of a solar eclipse? And if the eclipse is playing a factor in this new era, it would explain why Swift blacked out her social media channels on Friday (August 18). The solar eclipse, if you’re unfamiliar, literally blacks out the sun for two minutes. These connections aren’t exactly subtle.

And get this: Swift decided to break her social media silence on Eclipse Day. She uploaded a cryptic video of a snake, which is clearly a nod to the Kim Kardashian-Snapchat feud from last year. (If you recall, people started associating Swift with the snake emoji because of it.)

Joseph Kahn, Swift’s longtime music video collaborator, added fuel to this fire when he tweeted these two things on Monday:

To top it all off, radio stations are also teasing that something big and Swift-related is happening today:

But. What. Is. Happening? Honestly, who knows at this point? Fan theories like this are ridiculous in by nature, but that’s what makes them so fun. Let’s just bask in this pop-music circus, shall we? That is, after all, what Queen Taylor Swift wants.
