Michelle Obama Says Men Can't Be Bystanders When It Comes to Sexual Misconduct

We can always trust former First Lady Michelle Obama to speak up about important issues facing women—and to share some sound wisdom while doing so. She’s spoken out about the ways parents can better raise children so that when the kids reach adulthood, the men don’t feel so problematically entitled and the women feel more empowered. She’s enlightened us about the racism she faced during husband Barack Obama’s eight years as president. She has even pointed out the ridiculous double standard between her fashion choices and her Barack’s, pointing out that what she wore got scrutinized while her husband could wear the same tux to every single event.

This week, she spoke out about the issue that’s been in the news every single day lately: sexual misconduct. Michelle gave a speech in Hartford, Connecticut on Thursday where she addressed the slew of allegations that have made their way into the news recently. “I can’t tell you how sick it makes me, the more I see the uncovering of the truth that all us women know has been out there, that there is an ugliness there,” she told the crowd.

She went on to explain that in order for women to gain the strength to speak up for themselves, it’s going to take a lot of work. But it’s not all on women, either—men need to act as our allies: “I’m talking to the men out there, who cannot be innocent bystanders and complacent … watching this happen,” she said.

Michelle spoke of state of anxiety women constantly live in, too. “We live in a world … where young girls are literally in danger of some kind of mess, whether it’s what a man says to us, or how he looks at us, or an opportunity that is taken from us, or somebody who’s got our foot on our necks,” she said. “It is such a sad, common existence for women and girls in this country.”

As eloquently as you’d expect, Michelle also addressed the little ways that we can help make the word a better, more fair place for everyone. As it turns out, her golden rules aren’t terribly hard to follow: “Focus on what you can control. Be a good person every day. Vote. Read. Treat one another kindly. Follow the law. Don’t tweet nasty stuff.”

The Problem With Men, Michelle Obama Says, Is We've Made Them 'Entitled'

On Wednesday Former First Lady Michelle Obama took to the stage at the inaugural Obama Summit alongside poet Elizabeth Alexander for a wide-ranging discussion on topics like Twitter, raising children and the crucial importance of self-care. But perhaps her most pointed and valuable advice was for men in America and their grave need to get a better group of friends.

“Y’all need to get you some friends,” Obama said to uproarious laughter and applause from the crowd.

Female friends, Obama said, “straighten each other out on some things … Y’all need to go talk to each other about your stuff because there’s so much of it. It’s so messy. Talk about why y’all the way you are.”

From there, Obama explained that all the issues that come with male adulthood stem from the way society raises its boys.

“The problem in the world today is we love our boys and we raise our girls. We raise them to be strong and sometimes we take care not to hurt men. And I think we pay for that a little bit,” she said. “And that’s a we thing because we’re raising them.”

Obama then posed the question asking whether or not we are coddling young men too much “so they feel entitled and a little self-righteous sometimes? But that’s kind of on us too as women and mothers as we nurture men and we push girls to be perfect.”

In her discussion with Alexander Obama added that young girls must be taught from a very young age to stand up for themselves and practice that skill for a lifetime.

“If we don’t ask them to speak up at an early age that doesn’t just happen,” she said. “It takes practice to have a voice… to say ‘no, don’t touch me.'”

As a mother to two young women Obama explained that she is focusing on ensuring her daughters are “sturdy and able to exist” in this world because, as she said, “it is a world that is dangerous for women.”

In addition to her highly useful advice about raising strong girls, Obama also gave a quick lesson to a few unnamed world leaders on how to effectively use social media for god.

“When you have a voice you can’t just use it any kind of way … You don’t just say what’s on your mind. You don’t tweet every thought,” Obama said, again eliciting a huge laugh from the crowd. “Your first initial thoughts are not worthy of the light of day,” she added. But to ensure the audience that she wasn’t talking about Tweeter-in-Chief Donald Trump Obama coyly added, “And I’m not talking about anybody in particular, I’m talking about us all because everybody does that.”

And we’d be apt to believe she wasn’t calling out Trump until she threw out this fairly obvious shade saying that when sending tweets “You need to think and spell it right and have good grammar, too.”

Busy Philipps Just Dyed Michelle Williams' Hair Pink on Instagram

PHOTO: INSTAGRAM / @BUSYPHILIPPS

Legend has it that celebrities are just like us, and watching Busy Philipps dye Michelle Williams’ hair pink, well, let’s just say we’re starting to buy into that idea a little more. On Wednesday night, the real-life best friends recorded the whole night for Instagram, and it’s impossible to look away.

The action began while the duo and a friend were staying up for a flight back to LA from Paris. After going out, they were back in a hotel room (with white wine) when the pink-haired Philipps whipped out her leave-in hair tint. “Guys, we’re going to dye her hair pink. What do you think? Is this a good idea? Look at that hair. It’s going to be pink,” Philipps explained to the camera.

Philipps says she uses the tint for 20 minutes to get her pink color, so they decided to put it into William’s platinum pixie for five minutes. The goal: “perfectly millennial pink” hair. Philipps massaged it in; Williams’ face is, in a word, incredible. In two words, incredible and relatable.

Five minutes of wine time later, and Williams’ was freshly pink.

For how it happened, the color looks great—like pink champagne (alcohol pun not intended), strawberry blond’s platinum-based sister.

In a Leslie Knope way, Philipps said what we were all thinking: “She has slightly pink hair, and it’s fucking beautiful. She’s like a little nymph asleep next to me.”

Michelle Obama Speaks Out Against Donald Trump Without Even Saying His Name

Michelle Obama usually avoids explicitly calling out Donald Trump, but she’s found subtler ways to make her opinion clear. During a conversation with Shonda Rhimes at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women on Tuesday, she got in a sharp jab at Trump without even naming him.

“Many of the young people today, they only know Barack Obama as their president and what that standard felt like and what kind of messages were being talked about,” she said. “They grew up only under hope and possibility and options and opportunity and creating more space. … I think they will feel some of what’s happening now as intrinsically not what they were taught.”

That doesn’t mean, however, that Trump has shaped the next generation’s worldview. In fact, she thinks young people have the potential to change things. “They are more open, in ways,” she said. “I think they are less tolerant of obvious inequities. I think that this generation will look at what is happening now in the world and they will say, ‘This doesn’t feel right because this wasn’t what I was taught.'”

But she didn’t just take aim at Trump. One source of the problem, she said, is a lack of diversity in Congress, especially among Republicans. “It’s a feeling of color, almost,” she said. “On one side of the room, it’s literally gray and white, literally, that’s the color palette on one side of the room. On the other side of the room, there’s yellows and blues and whites and greens. Physically, there’s a difference in color in the tone. Because one side, all men, all white. On the other side, some women, some people of color.”

In order to get a more diverse, forward-thinking group of people into politics, the Obama Presidential Center will support the development of young leaders, particularly women, she added.

Obama most famously called out Trump without naming him at the Democratic National Convention last year, where she explained how she teaches her daughters to process what’s happening in the news. “How we urge them to ignore those who question their father’s citizenship or faith,” she said. “How we insist that this hateful language they hear from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country. How we explain that when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level. No, our motto is: when they go low, we go high.”

Barack Obama Surprises Michelle With Anniversary Video Message

PHOTO: Marla Aufmuth/Getty Images

Grab the tissues — Barack Obama is at it again, bringing us, and Michelle Obama, to tears.

While we (and probably Michelle) doubted Barack would be able to outdo his previous sweet social media messages to his wife, it seems he pulled out all the stops for their 25th wedding anniversary. On Tuesday, the former POTUS surprised his wife at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women in Philadelphia — where Michelle was in conversation with Shonda Rhimes — with an incredibly touching and gracious video message.

During the event, Obama appeared on a screen, first apologizing for “crashing” the event, before launching into a two-minute speech that People reports left Michelle teary-eyed and blushing. Obama also shared his message to his Facebook page and, unsurprisingly, his sincere sentiments have racked up 90,000 Likes in just one hour.

“The idea that you would put up with me for a quarter of a century is a remarkable testament to what a saintly, wonderful, patient person you are,” he says in the video. “It was a lot easier for me to do it because the fact of the matter is that not only have you been an extraordinary partner, not only have you been a great friend, somebody who could always make me laugh, somebody who would always make sure that I was following what I thought was right, but you have also been an example to our daughters and to the entire country. Your strength, grace, your determination, your honesty, the fact that you look so good doing all this…is remarkable.”

He continued: “It’s no wonder that as people got to know you the way that I got to know you, they fell in love. And it is truly the best decision that I ever made to be persistent enough in asking you out for a date, that you finally gave in. I hope you feel the same way.”

After Obama’s message, Michelle, per People, turned to Shonda and joked, “I better get home.”

Earlier in the day, Michelle shared her own message—a black-and-white photo from their wedding—on Twitter. “Happy 25th anniversary @barackobama. A quarter of a century later, you’re still my best friend & the most extraordinary man I know. I ? you” she captioned it.

Barack and Michelle’s quarter century of cute moments began in 1989, when they went on a date to see Do the Right Thing. In the years since, the two have shared two kids, a stint in the White House, started a foundation, and, most importantly, shared several goal-worthy moments for the country to swoon over.

Michelle Obama's 25th Anniversary Message to Barack Is Exactly What You Need Today

PHOTO: Ron Sachs-Pool/Getty Images

Leave it to Michelle and Barack Obama to be the glimmer of hope and happiness needed in the world today. On October 3, which marks the former First Couple’s 25th wedding anniversary, Michelle took to Twitter to celebrate her “best friend” and husband with a sweet message.

Sharing a black and white photo from their wedding, Michelle captioned the now-iconic pic, “Happy 25th anniversary @barackobama. A quarter of a century later, you’re still my best friend & the most extraordinary man I know. I ? you.” (Feel free to start a petition to declare the Obama’s wedding anniversary as a national holiday.) Naturally, the Internet began flooding Michelle’s mentions with adorable GIFs of the two hugging, kissing, and fist-bumping alongside messages of how missed they are in the White House. “Happy Anniversary to an exemplary couple. And y’all are adorable, too. ❤️” one Twitter user wrote.

Barack has yet to share his own message on social media for Michelle, but judging from past public displays of affection towards his wife, it’ll be worth the wait.

Barack and Michelle’s love story — which has been immortalized in the movie Southside With You — began when Michelle was assigned to mentor Barack at the law firm Sidley Austin in Chicago. In 1989, the future Obamas went on their first date to see the movie Do the Right Thing. (“He was trying to show me his sophisticated side by selecting an independent filmmaker,” Michelle teased in 2014, according to MTV.) And the rest is presidential history.

It’s far from the first time that the former POTUS and FLOTUS have had the country screaming “relationship goals.” The couple routinely take to social media on their anniversaries and Valentine’s Day to show each other some love. And just a few months ago, Michelle shared a birthday message to Barack that echoed Tuesday’s anniversary well wishes. “Another year older, but still the same phenomenal guy I married nearly 25 years ago,” she wrote at the time.

Since leaving the White House, the Obamas have traveled extensively, dropped their eldest daughter, Malia, [off at college](/story/barack-obama-admits-he-cried-after-dropping-malia-off-at-college, and are also considering a move to New York City.

Happy silver anniversary, Barack and Michelle.
