Michelle Pfeiffer Was Asked About Her Weight During ‘Scarface’ Panel, Audience Boos

During a panel discussion at the Tribeca Film Festival on Thursday night, actors Michelle Pfeiffer, Al Pacino, and Steven Bauer reunited with director Brian De Palma to talk about the cult-favorite film Scarface, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The stars of the drug kingpin classic shared memories from the set and analyzed the movie’s cultural impact, but the event moderator Jesse Kornbluth drew the ire of the crowd when he directed his first question at Pfeiffer and asked, “What did you weigh?”

If you remember, Pfeiffer played Elvira, the wife of the Al Capone-inspired drug dealer Tony Montana, and she becomes progressively more distressed and addicted to cocaine as the film unfolds. According to Entertainment Weekly, Kornbluth said, “Michelle, as the father of a daughter, I’m concerned with body image. The preparation for this film what did you weigh?” The audience responded with loud boos, and Vanity Fair described that, “Pacino, Bauer, and De Palma immediately turned to look at her, shocked by the question.”

Pfeiffer herself was speechless for a few seconds and looked around the room, perplexed. Someone from the crowd could be heard telling her, “You don’t have to answer that.”

Kornbluth quickly countered, “This is not the question you think it is,” and Pfeiffer reluctantly responded, “Well, okay. “I don’t know, but I was playing a cocaine addict, so that was part of the physicality of the part which you have to consider.” She joked that she was living on “tomato soup and Marlboros.” The incident would have been over, but Kornbluth followed up with a question about what she ate when the shoot wrapped. She told him she didn’t remember, but said “probably Mexican food. Probably chips and guacamole.”

What fascination with her eating habits! Even if “body image” was the conceit of the question, she could have simply been asked what she did to prepare for the role, which would have offered a look into the psyche of her complex character in addition to the physicality she offered. Also, let’s keep in mind that her co-star Pacino played a cocaine addict who was gaunt, hollow-eyed, and haggard by the end of the film, too, but he wasn’t asked about his appearance and eating regimen.

The questions reflect how male and female actors often get wildly different questions about their roles and their craft. At a 2012 press conference for The Avengers, someone asked Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. about their character preparation—only, they asked Downey about his character’s evolving “maturity,” and they asked Johansson about her diet. Johansson made headlines for turning to Downey and quipping, “How come you get the really interesting existential question, and I get the like, ‘rabbit food’ question?”

Let’s hope Pfeiffer gets meatier questions at the next Scarface reunion—there’s no doubt that the three-time Oscar-nominated actress has plenty to say that doesn’t involve weight or guac.

Michelle Obama Gives First Post-White House Speech: 'I’m Back! This Is What Back Looks Like'

Michelle Obama is back doing one of the things she does best—giving compelling speeches. (Or, as she puts it, “I’m back! This is what back looks like.”) On Friday, the former first lady gave her first big speech since she and her husband left the White House behind, and it had all the hallmarks of a classic Mobama address. There was empathy. There was hopefulness. And there was also, seemingly, at least a little shade thrown at the man who took over for her husband.

Obama spoke at the Kennedy Center for the School Counselor of the Year ceremony, addressing the people who are tasked with guiding students through their education during this particular administration. And Obama made it clear she understood that job takes a lot of skill. “Trust me, I know this work isn’t easy, especially right now,” Obama said, according to People. “I know there’s a lot of anxiety out there. And there’s no denying our kids, what they see on TV, the kind of behavior being modeled in public life, that, yes impacts their behavior and their character.” She also brought in one her most iconic quotes from the 2016 election season, telling the assembled crowd, “You all have the power to teach kids what it means to go high when others go low.”

Obama added, according to CNN, “Folks like these up here, you all, you don’t get dragged down by the headlines, by the false claims about our children and our neighborhoods, you don’t have time for that nonsense because you’re out there doing the work. No matter what’s going on right now, out there, all that noise, you know that our young people are the future, and the most important thing we can do as individuals and as a nation is to believe in all of them, to invest in all of them and to build schools and communities worthy of their boundless promise.”

Though this marks the first time Obama has returned to a major stage to dust off her speech giving skills since Trump’s inauguration, it’s not the first time she’s offered up some wise, public words in the last year. During a discussion at the Obama Foundation Summit this fall, the former first lady had some serious advice for all the men listening. “Y’all need to go talk to each other about your stuff because there’s so much of it,” she explained. “It’s so messy. Talk about why y’all the way you are.”

Michelle Obama Breaks Down That Awkward Gift Moment With Melania Trump at the Inauguration

Consider this a lovely thought that was, unfortunately, upstaged by a huh? heard round the world: At last year’s presidential inauguration, outgoing First Lady Michelle Obama was on the receiving end of an unexpected gift—which came in the form of a large Tiffany & Co. box—from incoming First Lady Melania Trump. Any other day of the week, this robin’s-egg-blue surprise would’ve likely made Obama happy—but this was the presidential inauguration, where strict protocols are in place. Protocols that don’t account for the unexplained presence of gifts.

Still, Obama was as gracious as she could’ve been in the situation, appreciatively receiving the gift while looking around for someone to take it. Still, the moment quickly went viral thanks to her flummoxed facial expression. Now, appearing on Ellen in her first television interview since leaving the White House, Obama admitted she was indeed caught off-guard by the inauguration day present. (Oh, and the gift ended up being a “lovely” picture frame, if you’re curious.)

“Well, there’s all this protocol. I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here,” she explained to Ellen DeGeneres. “Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, okay.” Her thought in the moment was, frankly, to just get the box to a neutral location.

“What am I supposed to do with this gift? And everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box. And I’m thinking, Do we take the picture with?” she continued. “And then my husband saved the day—see, he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out. No staff, no one. I was like, What do you do with the box?”

The only remaining question: What did this former FLOTUS opt to put in the frame? Maybe a handsome photo of Bo? Or one of Malia at Harvard? It’s anyone’s guess.

Michelle Williams and Andrew Youmans Are Engaged—See Her Gorgeous Ring

A huge congratulations is in order for Michelle Williams: The All the Money in the World actress is engaged to New York financial consultant Andrew Youmans, Us Weekly reports.

According to the magazine, Williams and Youmans were first spotted together in Rome last July, when she was filming All the Money in the World. She’s incredibly private about her personal life, though, so the two haven’t made a public appearance together yet. However, paparazzi did snap them enjoying New Year’s Day in the Bahamas, where Williams was seen wearing a sparkly ring on that finger. This originally caused all the engagement rumors that, per Us Weekly, are completely true.

Williams wore the same ring to the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, but she told reporters it was just “beautiful jewelry,” brushing off any speculation she was engaged. Check out the ring for yourself, below. Williams wasn’t lying: It’s stunning.

“She wants a good guy and a stable family life,” an insider told Us Weekly. Williams has a 12-year-old daughter named Matilda, whom she had with the late Heath Ledger. “Michelle was totally focused on giving Matilda the best upbringing possible,” a friend told Us Weekly. Another confidante added, “It took her a long time to get over Heath.”

If you recall, Williams and Ledger were together from 2004 to 2007. Ledger tragically and suddenly passed away in January 2008 from an accidental drug overdose. It’s believed this incident is largely why Williams is so guarded about her personal life now.

Williams is one of the actresses behind the Time’s Up movement, which launched January 1 and is striving to end harassment and gender imbalance in the workplace. She was recently in the news over reports that her All the Money in the World co-star Mark Wahlberg was paid $1.5 million during the film’s reshoots, while she received less than $1,000. Wahlberg ultimately donated his salary to Time’s Up.

Michelle Williams Was Reportedly Paid Less Than $1,000 For Movie Reshoot—While Mark Wahlberg Made $1.5 Million

A new USA Today story released last night is reporting that Michelle Williams was less than $1000 to reshoot scenes for her Golden Globe-nominated performance in All the Money in the World while Mark Wahlberg received $1.5 million. And people are not pleased. Movie reshoots are not an uncommon practice and typically would not be a huge story, but in this case director Ridley Scott decided to remove Kevin Spacey from the film entirely and replace him with Christopher Plummer after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced about Spacey. This was all done incredibly quickly over Thanksgiving in order to make the film’s original release date.

Scott told USA Today in December that “The whole reshoot was — in normal terms was expensive but not as expensive as you think. Because all of them, everyone did it for nothing…No, they all came in free. Christopher had to get paid. But Michelle, no. Me, no.” (The crew, however, was paid.) Williams herself previously told the paper, “I said I’d be wherever they needed me, whenever they needed me. And they could have my salary, they could have my holiday, whatever they wanted. Because I appreciated so much that they were making this massive effort.” But now reporters say that they discovered Wahlberg’s team actually negotiated a $1.5 million salary for the extra time on the job. Making it all the more complicated, the two actors are both represented by the same agency, WME.

Twitter—including Williams’ bestie Busy Phillips and Jessica Chastain—exploded with outrage on Williams’ behalf as soon as the story was published, calling out the pay gap but also that she was willing to do whatever it took to remove Spacey from the film while Wahlberg saw the moment as a cash grab. Talk about not reading the room, right?

While Williams has not commented directly on this story, she has played an active role in the Time’s Up initiative and brought #MeToo founder Tarana Burke as her date to the Golden Globes. Wahlberg has also not commented, but public opinion does not seem to be on his side. Even if there are complicated contract technicalities that somehow make this more than a gender pay issue, it’s not a great look right now to be asking for more money when so many others were simply dedicated to getting an alleged serial abuser out of the film. Could a donation to Time’s Up be in his future?

A Woman Accidentally Texted Sarah Michelle Gellar Her Engagement News and Got an Epic Response

After her boyfriend recently popped the question, Georgia resident Charlyn Willis did what any newly engaged person does: She picked up her phone and told her family the good news. But in what she thought was a text to her sister, Willis ended up disclosing the announcement—and her engagement ring selfie, of course—to someone slightly outside of her inner circle: None other than Buffy actress and Cruel Intentions scene-stealer Sarah Michelle Gellar.

After receiving the text, Gellar responded in an epic (and unsurprisingly cool) way: by posting Willis’ photo to her own Instagram story and Facebook page asking followers to send well-wishes to the bride-to-be. “This is #CharlynWillis. She got engaged yesterday, and meant to text her sister, but in all the excitement, got me instead,” wrote Gellar on Facebook. “Please help me say congrats to Charlyn. (And her fiancé whose name I don’t know).”

Take a look, below:

If that’s not the most legendary way to tell the world that your fiancé put a ring on it, I don’t know what is. And apparently Willis thinks so too. “I guess the best way to announce your engagement is to have a celebrity do it for you,” she wrote in a Facebook post this weekend, later following up with: “Thank you Sarah…You’ve truly made my engagement experience even more of a life changer! Please know when we set a date, I’ll be reaching out to invite you, Freddie, and the kids! ????”

In the end, if Willis does end up inviting the Gellar/Prinze Jr. family, that’s going to be one hell of a wedding…thanks to one hell of a wrong number.
