Meghan Markle's Makeup Rubbed Off on a Man's Jacket—and His Reaction Was Perfect

Meghan Markle‘s life as a member of the royal family is not something many, or really any, of us can relate to—what with all of that formal protocol, titles and palaces. But that doesn’t mean she’s not a real human woman who occasionally has a beauty mishap, just like the rest of us.

Earlier this week, Markle and Prince Harry attended a ceremony at Westminster Abbey’s Field of Remembrance to honor British military veterans. As they often do, the Sussexes also mingled with the crowd and gave out an occasional hug—and one such embrace caused the Duchess’s makeup to smudge. Royal reporter Rebecca English was on the scene and offered up details. “And here is D-Day veteran William Allen – a remarkable man who celebrates his 100th birthday next month,” she tweeted. “Meghan hugged and kissed him, leaving a little make-up smudge on his jacket. ‘I’m never washing that!’ he said.”

That is a perfect and totally adorable reaction to the Duchess of Sussex leaving some of her powder on your jacket. Who among us hasn’t had this exact same thing happen? The powder was probably applied by the one and only Meghan Markle herself as she reportedly likes to do her own makeup for most of her engagements. “She just likes doing her own makeup,” a source said earlier this year. “It has nothing to do with Kate. Meghan has her makeup done for some special occasions but likes to do it herself.”

If you’re looking for a little bit of that Markle Sparkle for yourself, try this tip from her friend and makeup artist, Daniel Martin. (He’s the genius behind her royal wedding makeup.) He told Glamour that the best way to get a glow is to dust a shimmery gold highlighter on your cheekbones to “brighten the complexion and add a nice radiance to the face without looking too much.”

Meghan Markle's Close Friend Opened Up About Watching Her Face Media Scrutiny

An upcoming documentary about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s recent trip to Africa showed Markle revealing that she’s been “vulnerable” in the spotlight as a royal and new mother. “Not many people have asked if I’m okay,” the Duchess said in the now-viral clip. Following that heartbreaking confession, one of the Duchess of Sussex’s close friends is coming to her defense.

On a recent episode of CBS This Morning, Markle’s makeup artist, Daniel Martin opened up about watching his friend face intense scrutiny from the British tabloids. In short: It’s been an incredibly difficult time for the Duchess.

At the top of the interview, Martin was asked how it’s been to watch his close friend get dissected by the British media. “To be honest, it’s been tough,” Martin said. “Watching this documentary, it’s almost been the relief seeing her at a point where she can be honest about what’s been happening. I feel like all of us who have known, we just didn’t know what to do or how to help, but I feel like just putting this out there, like it has been challenging, it’s hopefully demystified a lot about what’s going on over there.”

Markle is currently in a legal battle against the Daily Mail, which allegedly illegally published a private letter she sent to her father, Thomas Markle, in 2018.

Martin was asked how Markle is handling the lawsuit under the watchful eye of the press. He revealed that Markle’s singularly focused on protecting Prince Harry and baby Archie through the proceedings. “I think she has a lot on her plate and she just wants to make sure that her boys are safe,” he said. “I know her. She’s going to totally take care of this. It’s just understanding the ways around it.”

Keeping up close friendships outside of the royal family have been essential to Markle’s adjustment to her new role. Martin, whom Markle has known for a decade, has been part of several of her big occasions, including the royal wedding (he was responsible for Markle;s makeup) and her baby shower. The love is mutual: While Markle was in New York City for the U.S. Open in September, she snuck in a visit to Martin’s birthday party.

It’s unclear how long Markle’s lawsuit will last or what the outcome will be, but judging by Martin’s interview, she at least has dedicated friends to support her through it.

This Video of Prince Harry Fixing Meghan Markle's Ponytail Will Warm Your Heart

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s royal tour of southern Africa kicked off on Monday, September 23, and it seems like they’re having a great time. Day one of the festivities, which took place in Cape Town, included some dancing, a moving speech about female empowerment, and a viral moment involving Markle’s ponytail.

What’s that last one, you ask? Well, I’ll show you. At some point during the day, Markle and Prince Harry stopped by a workshop in Cape Town’s Nyanga township that educates children on self-empowerment, where they posed for a few pics with students. As the photographer snapped away, Prince Harry noticed Markle’s ponytail was a bit out of place, and he casually fixed it for her. The Duchess of Sussex seemed unfazed by the move and just kept smiling for photos.

Check out the sweet moment for yourself, below. The duke is always looking out! (The Markle Instagram fan account, @_duchess_of_sussex, has the footage.)

This isn’t the first time Prince Harry has done something like this. Last year at an engagement, he fixed Markle’s hair after the wind slightly messed it up:

Prince Harry and Markle will explore several parts of southern Africa on their tour, including Malawi and Angola. Here are just a few photos from their first day in Cape Town:

Every Single Item from Meghan Markle's New 'Smart Set' Fashion Collection for Charity

It’s almost hard to remember a time before Meghan Markle’s every outfit change was documented and tracked down, credit for credit. Up until this point, the best any royal fan could do was to shop the pieces she wore to channel the duchess’s refined, understated, small-business supporting style—which they did in a huge way, causing even the smallest business to rack up massive waitlists almost instantaneously. But nothing will compare to the responses to Markle’s personally curated fashion collection for charity, available for purchase today.

In partnership with Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Jigsaw, and personal friend and designer Misha Nonoo, Markle created a limited-edition capsule that follows a one-for-one model: For every piece sold, one will be donated to Smart Works to help underprivileged and unemployed women dress, prepare for, and ultimately ace job interviews. Which is wonderful news for anyone who appreciates a good cause as much as a work bag.

“Since moving to the UK, it has been deeply important to me to meet with communities and organisations on the ground doing meaningful work and to try to do whatever I can to help them amplify their impact,” the Duchess said on the Sussex Royal Instagram. “It was just last September that we launched the ‘Together’ cookbook with the women of the Hubb Kitchen in Grenfell. Today, a year later, I am excited to celebrate the launch of another initiative of women supporting women, and communities working together for the greater good.”

“Thank you to the four brands who came together in supporting Smart Works on this special project—placing purpose over profit and community over competition,” she continued. “In convening several companies rather than one, we’ve demonstrated how we can work collectively to empower each other—another layer to this communal success story, that I am so proud to be a part of.”

A dress, pair of perfect work pants, a blazer, and a blouse also the fill out the Markle-approved line, priced reasonably. (Most pieces are under $250.) Markle unveiled the collection at a rooftop launch event in London and you can shop it right now.

Meghan Markle's Interview With Michelle Obama For British Vogue Is Here

Meghan Markle has notched another “first,” becoming the first-ever guest editor of British Vogue‘s September issue, which is out next week. The duchess decided to feature some of the women who serve as her biggest inspirations in its pages, which she’s called “Forces for Change.” Also included in the historic issue is a Q&A she herself conducted with former First Lady Michelle Obama. That interview was published by Vogue this week, and it’s brimming with powerful insights and thoughtful words of advice.

We shouldn’t be surprised: Over and over again, the former FLOTUS and best-selling author has inspired women with her wisdom on marriage and relationships and her enlightened perspective on parenthood. She’s done it again in the interview with Markle.

As Markle writes in the introduction to the back-and-forth, she proposed the interview to Obama “over a casual lunch of chicken tacos and my ever-burgeoning bump” and emphasized that she’d intended it to be just “a few simple questions to garner a few simple answers.” But Markle was in for a surprise.

“What was sent back to me, however, left me somewhat speechless,” Markle continues. “A few ‘simple questions’ (which she could have answered with a sentence or two) were returned to me as a thoughtful, reflective and beautifully curated narrative—a gentle reminder not of how but of why she has become such a globally respected public figure.”

The Q&A covers the issue of global equality for women and girls, lessons Obama has learned from her years in the public eye, and motherhood—which makes sense given Markle’s status as a brand new mom. Referring to a message Obama sent Markle on Mother’s Day, the Duchess of Sussex asked Obama what being a mom had taught her.

“Motherhood has taught me that, most of the time, my job is to give them the space to explore and develop into the people they want to be. Not who I want them to be or who I wish I was at that age, but who they are, deep inside. Motherhood has also taught me that my job is not to bulldoze a path for them in an effort to eliminate all possible adversity. But instead, I need to be a safe and consistent place for them to land when they inevitably fail; and to show them, again and again, how to get up on their own,” Obama answered.

Obama also said that she would encourage her daughters to “keep trying on new experiences until they find what feels right” instead of trying to stick to a path or a set of expectations.

“Becoming who we are is an ongoing process, and thank God—because where’s the fun in waking up one day and deciding there’s nowhere left to go? That’s something I wish I’d recognized a little earlier. As a younger woman, I spent too much time worrying that I wasn’t achieving enough, or I was straying too far from what I thought was the prescribed path. What I hope my daughters will realize a little earlier is that there is no prescribed path, that it’s OK to swerve, and that the confidence they need to recognize that will come with time,” she continued.

Markle asked if that advice would have been different if Obama had had sons instead of daughters, and Obama replied with a poignant response, invoking her own parents. Her advice, she wrote, would have been the exact same:

“My parents, particularly my father, taught my brother and me at an early age to treat boys and girls exactly the same. When I was still in elementary school, my dad bought my brother a pair of boxing gloves. But when he came home from the store, he was carrying not one, but two pairs of gloves. He wasn’t going to teach his son to punch without making sure his daughter could throw a left hook, too. Now, I was a little younger and a little smaller than my brother, but I kept up with him. I could dodge a jab just like he could, and I could hit just as hard as him, too. My father saw that. I think he wanted to make sure that my brother saw that as well,” she said.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Neighbors Reportedly Received Super-Strict Rules About Behaving Around Them

No one would ever really be prepared to live next door to royalty (I mean, how could you be?), but the royal family is reportedly making sure that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s new neighbors certainly are. According to reports, a “well-meaning” palace official stopped into a recent Windsor residents’ meeting to provide the neighbors with a few rules on interacting with the royals.

The rules, The Sun reported on Friday (July 26), include never asking to see Archie, not slipping mail through their letterbox, never offering to babysit or to walk their dogs, and never petting their dogs, even if the dogs come bounding over to you. Also: never say “good morning” to the royals unless they say it first.

“It would be funny if it wasn’t so over the top,” one local shared with The Sun about the list of demands.

“It’s extraordinary. We’ve never heard anything like it. Everyone who lives on the estate works for the royals and knows how to behave respectfully,” another told The Sun.

As The Sun noted, most of Harry and Meghan’s neighbors are palace officials, employees, or royally-adjacent people—so it’s not like they’re unused to palace culture. Those neighbors, it added, include the Queen’s right-hand woman and dresser Angela Kelly, as well as Prince Charles’ old nanny Mabel Anderson and the governor of Windsor Castle.

Another local expressed concern over the tone of the royal demands, adding even the Queen doesn’t make such requests. “We aren’t told how to behave around the Queen like this. She’s very happy for people to greet her,” the neighbor added.

But the palace has been quick to say that Harry and Meghan had nothing to do with this. A palace official told The Sun that protocol was set not by the Sussexes but rather by an “overly protective palace official.” Another palace source told The Daily Mail, “The Duke and Duchess had no knowledge of this briefing and no involvement in the concept or the content.”

This isn’t the first time there’s been reports of strict rules laid out by their staff. Just a few short weeks ago, the entire cast of The Lion King—including Beyoncé—was given a wild list of instructions on how to properly greet Meghan and Harry at the event.

“In the days leading up to it, they email you a protocol of how you’re supposed to greet Prince Harry and Meghan. They are very intense about it. I’m not kidding,” castmember Billy Eichner told Jimmy Kimmel in an interview after the premiere. “You’re supposed to say, ‘Your royal highness.’ You can’t speak until your hands are, like, in a handshake with his. My plus-one—my guest I brought with me, my very good friend Jared—they said he had to stand behind me and not speak unless he was spoken to. I’m not kidding! I was like, ‘Does that same rule apply to Jay-Z?’ I have a feeling it doesn’t.”
