Megan Markle's Close Friend Might Have Just Revealed the Sussexes' New Brand Name

Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared the announcement that they’re be stepping back as senior members of the royal family, there’s been a lot of talk about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s use of the word “royal.”

You see, after their wedding, the pair officially registered their website, social media handles, and charity as Sussex Royal. However, as part of the agreement to sever royal ties with the family, Queen Elizabeth forbid the couple from using the word royal on any of their work.

In a statement, the couple wrote that dropping the word royal was just fine with them. “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”

Though many viewed the response as snarky toward the Queen and the monarchy as a whole, the couple might have just been stating facts. Besides, it appears they already have a new name in the works already.

According to The Daily Mail, stylist Jessica Mulroney, who happens to be Meghan’s closest confidant, registered a new domain in Harry and Meghan’s name sometime last week. As The Daily Mail wrote, she “registered the website sussexglobalcharities.com last Wednesday through her charity the Shoebox Project Foundation, which supports vulnerable women.”

Look at the name again: “Sussex Global Charities.” No “royal” in sight.

“While the duke and duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organization, given the specific UK government rules surrounding the use of the word ‘royal’ it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organization when it is announced this spring, will not be named Sussex Royal Foundation,” a spokesperson for the couple told The Guardian. The spokesperson reiterated, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘SussexRoyal’ in any territory post-spring 2020.”

Though little else is known about just what Harry and Meghan will call their endeavors right now, we likely won’t have to wait long: The couple’s last official day as working members of the royal family is March 31.

Quitting Dieting Made Me a Better Friend

Though I remained on some type of diet (from old-school programs like Weight Watchers to silent, obsessive calorie counting, to diets disguised as wellness trends) well into my early 20s, all of this food talk remained solidly inside my head. I was embarrassed to say I was dieting at all. To say that was to invite responses of “You don’t need to lose weight,” which mortified me; in my mind, this response would always be a lie—an attempt at being polite. How embarrassing, I thought.

As for what my friends ate, I remained quietly jealous. Jealous of friends who never seemed to worry about their weight. Jealous of friends who could eat “whatever they wanted.” Jealous of friends who simply ate when they were hungry and enjoyed their meals. I built up a slow-churning resentment that remained just below the surface of things.

It wasn’t until I turned 25 and experienced a major personal loss that I really started to unpack the toll diet culture had taken on my life. I was confronted with the reality that life is brief, and that a future, thinner version of myself wasn’t guaranteed. I read books like The F*ck It Diet and learned about Health at Every Size. But most of all, I tried to figure out what dieting had ever brought me other than disordered eating habits, bitterness, and stress. So I stopped the calorie counting and the diets and the “It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change” programs that I had clung to for years. Two years later it’s still a daily battle, but now, instead of fighting cravings and the long list of what I “shouldn’t” eat, I fight the urge to restrict. I fight the impulse to eliminate entire food groups and to binge on “bad” foods in private.

It has taken years of pushing against all of that to realize that the envy I felt toward my friends never really had to do with food at all. It had to do with the ease some people had around food that I had never experienced.

When I quit dieting, it made me a better, happier human. It also made me a better friend. I no longer go out to dinner and think about what I’m eating versus what my friends are eating and the moral value of either meal. I no longer obsess over my weight versus others’ weight or worry about what people will think if I get a salad or a burger. I no longer compare my willpower to resist carbs with someone else’s. In fact, I no longer fear carbs at all (it is amazing how much this single change alone can revolutionize your life). Quitting dieting taught me that it is hard to be fully present in any relationship if you are always in survival mode, always in competition with food and those around you.

I thought that dieting would give me control over whether or not I liked myself, of whether I was worthy of joy or love or success. But dieting never gave me any of that. It never left me with anything at all, other than that little corner of my brain, the catalog of good and bad food, of right and wrong meals. It was that corner of my brain that prevented me from being fully present with my friends. I spent so much time in my head, trying to figure out which foods were good or bad, that I missed out on everything else. Now I know that food, weight, and thinness don’t have moral value. And all that jealousy I used to have for friends who ate whatever they wanted? Turns out all it took for it to disappear was to finally believe that I could too.

Prince Harry's Close Friend Explains Why He and Meghan Markle Stepped Down

Hopefully Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and baby Archie are settling into their new North American life nicely after stepping down as senior members of the royal family. While we still don’t know exactly what their post-palace life will look like—Markle is reportedly looking for a new agent or manager—we are getting new insight into all that led to their big decision.

The prince’s longtime friend, polo star Nacho Figueras, spoke out about Harry in a new ABC special, Royal Divide: Harry, Meghan and The Crown. He offered more insight as to why the duke and duchess stepped down as senior royals. “I spoke to Harry a few days ago,” he said. “He has suffered a lot from all of the things that have happened to him. He wants to live a normal life, as normal as his life is going to be, right? Because when you have a thousand paparazzi outside your house in Canada waiting to get a picture of your son that’s not very normal.”

Figueras hinted at the struggles Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, had with the press—including their possible culpability in the Paris car accident that took her life. “He’s protecting his family, he’s protecting his wife and his child,” he said. “He was a son of someone that has suffered the attack from the press firsthand, and it’s undeniable, and he doesn’t want for that to happen to his family.”

That certainly tracks with what we heard from Prince Harry himself in a speech he gave before leaving England to reunite with Markle and Archie in Canada. “The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly. It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges,” he said. “I’ve accepted this knowing it doesn’t change who I am or how committed I am, but I hope it helps you understand what it had come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life.”

Meghan Markle, a True Friend, Volunteered for Airport Pickup Duty

Meghan Markle is currently laying low in Vancouver while Prince Harry negotiates with his family about the couple’s decision to step down from senior royal duties. And, apparently, she’s really leaning into commoner life.

The Duchess was spotted picking up her friend, pilates instructor Heather Dorak, from Vancouver’s Victoria International Airport on Thursday (January 16). Markle didn’t arrive at Arrivals in a motorcade—in fact, the The Daily Mail obtained pic of Markle driving herself and a security guard to the airport. (She was wearing a very casual black beanie and chic sunglasses for the trip.)

The rest of the encounter was as low-key as you’d expect from a woman who’s consciously uncoupling from royal life. Markle and Dorak were photographed smiling and sharing a quick hug in the car before Markle drove away. We’d be just as happy if we touched down for a visit with the Duchess of Sussex and didn’t even need to call an Uber.

Details about Dorak’s visit to Markle’s Vancouver residence haven’t been shared. But we can only assume her visit will include plenty of face time with Baby Archie, yoga (Markle’s favorite workout), and a Suits marathon for old time’s sake.

Dorak and Markle have been friends since the time when the Duchess still operated her personal Instagram account. The pair met in Los Angeles, where Markle reportedly took classes through Dorak’s Pilates Platinum brand. Dorak was also among friends including Priyanka Chopra and Serena Williams who attended Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding in 2018.

Markle has only been seen a handful of times since she and Prince Harry made their big announcement. On Tuesday (January 14), she visited Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre to discuss “issues affecting women in the community.” And Reports from Us Weekly say Markle has been spotted running errands in Vancouver. Markle was seen pulling into a drugstore parking lot, once again driving herself, on Sunday (January 12).

Despite the change in their royal status, the couple still has major plans for the future, including launching a new “charitable entity,” as well as splitting their time between the U.K. and North America.

Meghan Markle's Close Friend Opened Up About Watching Her Face Media Scrutiny

An upcoming documentary about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s recent trip to Africa showed Markle revealing that she’s been “vulnerable” in the spotlight as a royal and new mother. “Not many people have asked if I’m okay,” the Duchess said in the now-viral clip. Following that heartbreaking confession, one of the Duchess of Sussex’s close friends is coming to her defense.

On a recent episode of CBS This Morning, Markle’s makeup artist, Daniel Martin opened up about watching his friend face intense scrutiny from the British tabloids. In short: It’s been an incredibly difficult time for the Duchess.

At the top of the interview, Martin was asked how it’s been to watch his close friend get dissected by the British media. “To be honest, it’s been tough,” Martin said. “Watching this documentary, it’s almost been the relief seeing her at a point where she can be honest about what’s been happening. I feel like all of us who have known, we just didn’t know what to do or how to help, but I feel like just putting this out there, like it has been challenging, it’s hopefully demystified a lot about what’s going on over there.”

Markle is currently in a legal battle against the Daily Mail, which allegedly illegally published a private letter she sent to her father, Thomas Markle, in 2018.

Martin was asked how Markle is handling the lawsuit under the watchful eye of the press. He revealed that Markle’s singularly focused on protecting Prince Harry and baby Archie through the proceedings. “I think she has a lot on her plate and she just wants to make sure that her boys are safe,” he said. “I know her. She’s going to totally take care of this. It’s just understanding the ways around it.”

Keeping up close friendships outside of the royal family have been essential to Markle’s adjustment to her new role. Martin, whom Markle has known for a decade, has been part of several of her big occasions, including the royal wedding (he was responsible for Markle;s makeup) and her baby shower. The love is mutual: While Markle was in New York City for the U.S. Open in September, she snuck in a visit to Martin’s birthday party.

It’s unclear how long Markle’s lawsuit will last or what the outcome will be, but judging by Martin’s interview, she at least has dedicated friends to support her through it.
