Meghan Markle’s Wedding Foundation Is Exactly as Good as It Looked

The royal wedding was just under a month ago, and news around the day’s events is somehow still coming out. But this is no minor detail we bring to you. This is big news about the most interesting part of Meghan Markle’s wedding day beauty routine: the barely-there foundation that inspired tweets and freckle-envy around the world.

Details have been hard to come by on the products that celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin used for Meghan’s wedding makeup, which was to be expected. Buckingham Palace is notoriously tight-lipped about the royals’ beauty routines, and unlike their outfits, there’s usually no way to ID a product from afar. Yet the beauty world’s whisper network has come through. Nothing is officially confirmed, but rumor has it that Meghan’s foundation was Dior’s newest formula, the Backstage Face & Body Foundation. With the line hitting shelves today, here’s everything to know about how the $40 foundation plays.

Real beauty goes beyond the surface—and so do we. Sign up for our newsletter to get honest reviews, personal essays, and more every day.

The release comes to us as part of the brand’s new—and more affordable—sister line, Dior Backstage. Peter Phillips, the creative director of Dior Makeup, had full reign over the new line, and came up with a slate of products intended to be both high-performing and intuitive to use. These are familiar claims in the beauty world, and they’re joined by a number you’ll also recognize: The Face & Body Foundation comes in a total of 40 shades, which has become the go-to benchmark for foundation lines. Those 40 are divided between six skin undertones, including cool, cool rosy, neutral, warm, warm olive, and warm peach. The foundation is joined by two eye palettes, two brow palettes, a highlighter palette, contour palette, and lip palette, along with 14 brushes.

In case anyone’s forgotten, Meghan’s skin was the stuff that dreams and dermatological aspirations are made of. Contending with late spring weather couldn’t have been easy, but the hundreds of thousands of photos prove what everyone saw that day: Meghan’s skin was fresh, dewy, and glowing, with her freckles in full view by personal request. Incredible photo opps and gentle lighting could only do so much, and after testing the Face & Body, I feel comfortable saying this foundation must have taken her the rest of the way.

Dior describes the foundation’s finish as luminous, but it doesn’t get there in the usual hydration-packed way. Which is a good thing, because where those formulas can stay moist and slip and slide throughout the day (and glom onto your phone in the grossest way), the Face & Body has a thin, watercolor quality to it that sinks into your skin. Phillips describes it to Glamour as a film-like texture, which lends itself to layering for adjustable coverage. After moisturizing, Phillips says that he applies it with a flat brush all over, and then uses a sponge or his fingers to blend. Thin layers were crucial for avoiding a melt-down situation at the royal wedding, he says, which is solid advice; Sir John said he used a similar layering technique to create Beyoncé’s Teflon face at Coachella, and between the two of them, no greater endorsement can exist.

After testing the foundation for a week on my combination skin, I can report that I won’t be putting it down anytime soon. Going by the name and squeeze-bottle packaging, the Face & Body will likely attract comparisons to MAC’s Studio Face and Body Foundation. They’re somewhat similar, but MAC’s has a much wetter formula, where the Dior dries down quickly. My skin leans dry, and if I bring a mirror an inch away from my face, the Dior can read a little powdery. But from a conversational distance away, it has a light, evening-out effect that looks like a second skin. From Meghan’s face to my own—because why stop at copying her mouth massage, when her foundation is up for grabs?

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Both Looked Incredible in Pastels at the Queen's Trooping the Color Celebration

The royal family and a lot of the public came together in London on Saturday for Trooping the Color, a.k.a. Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday celebration. Crash royals course: If you happen to be the Queen of England, you get two birthdays. She celebrated her actual 92nd birthday in April, but the real party—her public birthday—is in June, specifically on the second Saturday of the month.

Although it’s only been three weeks since the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it’s beginning to feel like it was a lifetime ago since we were able to get our royal fashion fix (those hats!). Luckily the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex—that’s Kate Middleton and Markle respectively—did not disappoint. The two wore blue and pink pastels for carriage rides around Buckingham Palace that culminated with an appearance on its famous balcony.

Middleton appeared in the lead carriage with Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla, who herself is the Duchess of Cornwall. The two were coordinated in light blue, with Middleton opting for a dress from one of her favorite design houses, Alexander McQueen. (She famously wore McQueen for her own wedding, Prince Harry and Markle’s wedding a few weeks ago, and even for Trooping the Color last year.)

According to What Kate Wore, her intricate hat is by Juliette Boterill.

Markle chose a peachy-pink look, topped off with a disc-shaped hat somewhat reminiscent of the one she wore for her first post-wedding appearance celebrating Prince Charles’ 70th birthday. But she decided against her now-signature messy bun for today’s occasion, wearing her hair down and in loose waves instead.

Her designers of choice? Carolina Herrera for her bespoke dress and, for the hat, the go-to milliner-to-the-stars Philip Treacy. But there’s another significant detail to her look: According to the Sun, Markle broke royal protocol by wearing an off-the-shoulder dress.

This isn’t the first time, either: Markle’s been breaking royal protocol with her fashion and hair choices since she and Harry officially started dating (we even kept a running list of tradition-breaking moments from her wedding to Prince Harry). Technically, even Markle’s famous messy bun is a royal no-no. Hello, royal refresh.

Of course, we can’t forget the Queen on her big day. Sticking to her tradition of bright colors, she went with a bright turquoise for her celebrations.

After the processional, the family gathered on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to wave to the crowds and watch the Royal Air Force flyover—frankly, though, we like to think it’s so we can get a better look at the great outfits.

Happy official birthday, Queen Elizabeth!

I Got a $650 'Penis Facial' and My Skin Has Never Looked Better

“I can only talk for a few minutes. I’m on my way to a penis facial.”

I was on the phone with my mother, who had called me during her usual time in the morning—right around 10 A.M. Since I work freelance, I’m usually just settling into my emails or leaving my yoga class at this time. I’m not usually headed to a beauty treatment that sounds like something you’d search for on a porn website.

But there I was, marching down Lexington Avenue on a Wednesday morning toward Georgia Louise Atelier in New York City for the celebrity facialist’s coveted Hollywood EGF facial. This treatment—unofficially called the “penis facial” and praised by the likes of Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett—promises a “red carpet-level glow” after just one session. It’s got the celebrity price tag to match at $650, but that’s a small price to pay for skin that’s paparazzi-ready. Seeing as I had a trip to Paris coming up that I was hoping to look impossibly fresh for, I jumped at the opportunity to give it a whirl.

Mom, however, was not that convinced. “Do they, like, hit you in the face with it?” she asked. “Do they use the sperm as a mask?”

None of the above, it turns out. The Hollywood EGF facial actually utilizes one of Georgia Louise’s signature serums, which contains EGF, or Epidermal Growth Factor. EGF is derived from the progenitor cells of fibroblast (i.e. the cells that produce collagen and elastin) that are taken from newborn baby foreskin.

Now, before you clutch your pearls, thinking that I had baby foreskin rubbed into my face, rest easy. The foreskin is collected during circumcision, at which point the stem cells are extracted through a centrifuge. They are then propagated to create more cells, and those stem cells and peptides are what are rubbed into your skin during the facial. The atelier claims they help “plump your skin and make you glow.”

“Growth factors are like messengers that tell your skin cells to work the best they can. Our body uses them to help repair itself from wounds, and most recently they have been used to reverse skin aging,” says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in the Department of Dermatology Mount Sinai Hospital. “While growth factors hold promise, we don’t yet have enough data to say they definitively work better than traditional treatments, like retinol or lasers. However, they are extremely safe, and the only risk is to your pocketbook because they can be pricey.”

Watch what it’s like to get the facial:

But that’s just one, tiny part of the otherwise involved treatment. When I arrived at Georgia Louise Atelier, my aesthetician walked me through the whole process. She’d cleanse and tone my skin before applying a TCA peel to sterilize it ahead of the microneedling. (Similar to glycolic acid, TCA, or trichloroacetic acid, helps exfoliate and is often used to help with discoloration.) Then, she’d apply a numbing agent—in this case, lidocaine—for 20 minutes while I sat under an LED lamp. “This just makes the microneedling more comfortable,” she explained. Then, she’d microneedle, and infused the EGF serum cocktail, followed by a second round of TCA to sterilize, an alginate mask (which is a thick mask that dries to a rubber-like consistency and then peeled off) for elasticity, and some moisturizer to finish it off. She’d warned me ahead of time to expect about 24 hours of redness and downtime, so I made sure to clear my plans.

At first, I was a little nervous about the prospect of the microneedle. I’d had a negative experience with another celebrity-endorsed facial (Kim Kardashian’s vampire facial—which she, too, later came to regret). It left my face beat-red and scary-looking for four days after the treatment. So I prepared myself for another half-week of tomato face, just in case.

From beginning to end, my aesthetician walked me through every step of the process, which made the entire thing incredibly relaxing. She massaged my shoulders while the lidocaine did its job, and kept checking in with me to see how I was reacting to the microneedle. Unlike my somewhat traumatizing vampire facial, I didn’t even feel the microneedle as my aesthetician skipped it across my face. The only slightly unpleasant part of the facial was the scent of the peel—as Cate Blanchett delicately put it, “it smells like sperm”—but even that faded after a couple of seconds. For a treatment that worked to make me glow, it felt more like an aromatherapy massage.

When I was finally finished with the process, my aesthetician excused herself to allow me to change. I warily peered into the hand mirror next to my massage table, expecting to see Freddy Krueger staring back at me. But instead, I was met with a glowing face. The only bits that were red were the patches of thin skin around my eyes. Other than that, my face looked like I’d just given myself an at-home peel.

Once I pulled myself together (and stopped staring at myself in the mirror) my aesthetician met me outside with after-care provisions. (These, FYI, aren’t part of the treatment but are available to buy if you want them). I took home a cleanser, two serums, and a small microneedle to use at home. I was instructed to not wear any makeup for 24 hours, to keep my skin hydrated with the hydrating serum, and told that I’d start to see the full effect in a few days. After two weeks, I could start using the microneedle and the EGF serum to keep up the effects.

I’m now a week out, and can safely say this is the best facial I’ve ever gotten in my life. My skin hasn’t broken out as drastically as it has with other facials, and I’m absolutely glowing. The redness only lasted a day, and I’ve been using less concealer in the days since I got the treatment. For those afraid of microneedles, allow me to placate your fears. You won’t be left red and bloody after this treatment.

I know that the idea of injecting foreskin cells into your skin is enough to give even someone with the strongest stomach the heebie jeebies, but trust me—it’s not that big of a deal. Consider the EGF facial like that delicious, buttery croissant you love to indulge in. Do you actually want to think about the fact that it has a stick of butter in it? Probably not. But does it make you happy and glowy? Absolutely. EGF is the same. Sure, it’s got cells harvested from strange places in it. But you’re going to look like Cate Blanchett afterwards. And that makes it worth it, right?

It did for me—which is exactly what I told my mother the day after my facial. She was very happy for me, but suggested I use the treatment’s real name, and not “penis facial” when describing it. Unfortunately, I’ve never been good at listening to her.

Selena Gomez Looked Stunning in This Fresh Take on the Naked Dress

Ah, the naked dress. Whether made from a single string or worn only with a thong, it’s one trend that is definitely not for the faint of heart. Unless, of course, you consider Selena Gomez‘s fresh—and completely romantic—take on the look, which she wore to the Business of Fashion’s #BoF500 party last night in New York City.

The “Fetish” singer skipped the mesh and almost completely sheer versions favored by the Kardashian clan when she stepped out, opting instead for a decidedly less see-through dress from Rodarte’s Spring 2018 Ready to Wear collection. The fabric, a medium-translucent beige lace, let the dark high-waisted briefs Gomez was wearing underneath peek through. It’s a beautiful look: the juxtaposition of light and dark helps set off the gown’s beautiful beading and floral appliqué.

Gomez was at the event celebrating her BoF 500 cover, which she shared on Instagram earlier this week saying she was “very grateful” for the honor.

Here’s a closer look at her dreamy gown:

As you can see, Gomez’s longtime makeup artist, Hung Vanngo, channeled retro glamour to finish off her look: he put a deep side part in her wavy bob (something we’ve been seeing all over the runways this Fashion Week) and paired it with a dark burgundy lip.

The overall look is very Old Hollywood-meets-woodland-fairy, and we’re here for it. Although we won’t know what her brand-new (and adorable) puppy thought about Selena’s look, her Instagram Story from later that night reveals how Charlie feels about the star herself, and it’s super cute:
