Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, Normal Sisters-in-Law, Both Attended the Queen's Christmas Lunch

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton both attended Queen Elizabeth II’s pre-Christmas lunch on Wednesday, December 19 looking as chic as ever. Unfortunately, the holiday merriment was no-doubt clouded by the incessant rumors the two sisters-in-law are feuding. These reports are unfounded, of course, and Kensington Palace even shut down them down with a rare statement in early December.

A new report from People claims Markle and Middleton’s relationship is “complex” but not outrageously terrible. “They are very different characters,” a family friend tells the magazine. But what in-laws relationship isn’t complicated? Are you best friends with your sister-in-law? Probably not! You most likely have a calm, congenial relationship with her—and the same goes for Markle and Middleton, in my opinion. Just because they’re not skipping down the street together doesn’t mean they’re enemies.

In fact, I’m willing to wager the two women had a lovely chat while sipping tea and eating those small sandwiches that never fill you up with the queen. Below, a non-exhaustive list of topics I hope they talked about:

  1. Why everyone is so obsessed with them driving and shutting car doors.

  2. This Instagram account of Prince George throwing imaginary shade at the other royals.

  3. The most recent season of Suits

  4. Why Prince Harry is obsessed with turning all the lights off in the house.

5.What type of pizza Prince William eats on the sofa.

  1. Whether Princess Charlotte is a Laurel or a Yanny.

  2. What Markle would’ve talked to Kendall Jenner about at the British Fashion Awards.

  3. If the Spice Girls reunion tour will be good without Victoria.

  4. Their favorite season of Love Island. (You know they watch.)

  5. Annnnd their favorite songs from the A Star Is Born soundtrack. (Meghan loves “Hair Body Face.” I can feel it.)

Meghan Markle Continues to Make the Case for the Bateau Neck at the Queen's Young Leaders Awards

Meghan Markle took a break from her custom Givenchy streak (from her first Royal Ascot, her first solo appearance with the Queen, and, of course, her wedding) to grace us with another incredible designer Duchess moment—this time, courtesy of Prada.

As The Sun reported, the Duchess of Sussex wore a belted, blush-toned skirt suit by the Italian fashion brand to the Queen’s Young Leaders Awards, which she attended with Prince Harry. And, as expected, our favorite former USA Network Original Series star looked stunning.

Markle paired the tailored ensemble with a black leather clutch (also prada) and black suede pumps (from Aquazzura, the same brand that designed her bespoke wedding reception shoes).

The Prada number is reminiscent of two of the Duchess of Sussex’s now-famous looks. Like her Givenchy Haute Couture wedding gown, the top featured a bateau neckline, which elegantly exposed a bit of the collarbone; and, like her Trooping the Color Carolina Herrera dress, it had button detailing across the front.

According to The Sun, this is the first time Markle attends the Young Leaders Awards, which honor “exceptional young people” across the Commonwealth “dedicated to making lasting change in their community and beyond.” The program began in 2014, and ends this year. Prince Harry kicked it off with a speech, in which he made sure to give the Duchess a sweet shout-out: “I, together with my wife, Meghan, look forward to convening young people from around the Commonwealth to hear your ideas, work with you to build platforms for you to collaborate and form partnerships, as we travel around in our work,” he told the audience.

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Both Looked Incredible in Pastels at the Queen's Trooping the Color Celebration

The royal family and a lot of the public came together in London on Saturday for Trooping the Color, a.k.a. Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday celebration. Crash royals course: If you happen to be the Queen of England, you get two birthdays. She celebrated her actual 92nd birthday in April, but the real party—her public birthday—is in June, specifically on the second Saturday of the month.

Although it’s only been three weeks since the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it’s beginning to feel like it was a lifetime ago since we were able to get our royal fashion fix (those hats!). Luckily the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex—that’s Kate Middleton and Markle respectively—did not disappoint. The two wore blue and pink pastels for carriage rides around Buckingham Palace that culminated with an appearance on its famous balcony.

Middleton appeared in the lead carriage with Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla, who herself is the Duchess of Cornwall. The two were coordinated in light blue, with Middleton opting for a dress from one of her favorite design houses, Alexander McQueen. (She famously wore McQueen for her own wedding, Prince Harry and Markle’s wedding a few weeks ago, and even for Trooping the Color last year.)

According to What Kate Wore, her intricate hat is by Juliette Boterill.

Markle chose a peachy-pink look, topped off with a disc-shaped hat somewhat reminiscent of the one she wore for her first post-wedding appearance celebrating Prince Charles’ 70th birthday. But she decided against her now-signature messy bun for today’s occasion, wearing her hair down and in loose waves instead.

Her designers of choice? Carolina Herrera for her bespoke dress and, for the hat, the go-to milliner-to-the-stars Philip Treacy. But there’s another significant detail to her look: According to the Sun, Markle broke royal protocol by wearing an off-the-shoulder dress.

This isn’t the first time, either: Markle’s been breaking royal protocol with her fashion and hair choices since she and Harry officially started dating (we even kept a running list of tradition-breaking moments from her wedding to Prince Harry). Technically, even Markle’s famous messy bun is a royal no-no. Hello, royal refresh.

Of course, we can’t forget the Queen on her big day. Sticking to her tradition of bright colors, she went with a bright turquoise for her celebrations.

After the processional, the family gathered on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to wave to the crowds and watch the Royal Air Force flyover—frankly, though, we like to think it’s so we can get a better look at the great outfits.

Happy official birthday, Queen Elizabeth!

Meghan Markle Followed the Queen's Nail Polish Rule for the Royal Wedding

With royal weddings, tiny things start to take on huge stakes. In the fashion realm, it’s finally fascinators’ time to shine, and with beauty, everyone holds their breath to see if the Queen’s nail polish policy will be upheld. Not familiar? The Queen loves delicate, translucent nail shades, and palace lore has it that she finds colorful nail polish (even traditionally classic shades like cherry red) vulgar.

So what did Meghan Markle pick for her wedding nail polish? While she’s made waves for breaking royal protocol with her messy buns that she favors, Meghan opted to wear a neutral pink-y beige manicure for the royal wedding. It’s unclear what the exact shade is at this moment, but both the Queen and Kate Middleton tend to favor Essie.

Duchess Kate, for example, wore Essie’s Allure for her wedding in 2011. And the Queen has been a long-time fan of Ballet Slippers ever since her hairstylist requested a bottle for her in 1989—the same year that Meghan was born. A bottle of it is currently sold every two seconds, and in 2018 alone, almost 80,000 bottles have been sold. While Meghan’s manicure looks slightly more opaque than the sheer Ballet Slippers, it’s the polish most royal fans have been betting she’d wear.

She’s abided by the polish rule since announcing her engagement back in November 2017, as a perusal from her appearances show:

On March 23, she went with a similarly pale shade for her and Prince Harry’s trip to Northern Ireland.

April 25 brought more of the same, albeit with what looks like a slightly pinker spin.

This story is still developing, and we’ll update this post when more details emerge.

Meghan Markle Wore a Club Monaco Dress to the Queen's Christmas Party—and It's Still in Stock

Sure, Meghan Markle has always been stylish; but now that she’s on the verge of becoming royalty, fans around the world are clamoring to get their hands on anything she wears with a bit more urgency—and that includes the dress she wore to the private Christmas celebration with the Queen. She may have preferred a $97,000 Ralph & Russo couture gown for her engagement photos, but for a gathering with the future-in-laws, Markle went to Club Monaco.

You may have missed it under that Sentaler coat, but Markle opted for a very low-key, off-the-rack dress for the holiday function at the Windsor family’s estate known as Sandringham House. The midi-length burgundy velvet style, dubbed the “Tay,” features tiered, ruffled short sleeves and a cinched-in belted waist that ties into a bow. The deep red hue and soft details made it an optimal fashion choice not only for the holidays but also for some face time with her majesty (who is well-known for her own stylish clothing choices).

PHOTO: Chris Jackson

Oh, and it’s still in stock: Markle’s Club Monaco dress is currently going for $239 (down from $298.) Sure, it’s still expensive, but not $97,000 couture expensive.

If you’re looking to grab a piece of royal fashion, do so as soon as possible. Otherwise, you could be left in the dust—Markle did help sell out this $670 in mere minutes, after all.

Meghan Markle Wears Self-Portrait for the Queen's Christmas Luncheon

The next manifestation of the so-called “Meghan Markle Effect“: fans being able to track down something she wears without even getting a full look at her outfit. Such was the case with the dress she donned to the Queen’s annual Christmas luncheon. Simply with a few blurry images of Markle sitting in the passenger seat as she and Prince Harry drove into Buckingham Palace, royal fashion sleuths identified the maker of her lace-topped dress—as well as the exact style.

Granted, the guipure lace is pretty distinctive, but it’s still no small feat. Here’s the best look we have at Markle’s dress for a holiday meal chez the Queen.

Markle’s lace-top dress is by celebrity-favorite brand Self-Portrait. Called the Nightshade Midi Dress, the style features the brand’s signature lace work (this one has embroidered flowers all over) cut into a short-sleeved top, as well as a black crepe, mid-length A-line skirt.

PHOTO: Self-Portrait

It originally retailed for £300—so a little over $400—but has since sold out on Self-Portrait’s website. You can still find different styles featuring the same Nightshade lace, though, including a mini dress version (on sale for £75, or around $101) and a long-sleeve ruffle top (also discounted right now, for £98, or around $131).

Markle has worn the London-based brand, which was founded by designer Han Chong in 2013, before. You may remember her light blue teardrop dress from Glamour‘s College Women of the Year event back in 2016.

Her future sister-in-law also appears to be a fan of the brand: Kate Middleton wore Self-Portrait’s Mia lace and pleated gown (low-key twinning with Paris Hilton, NBD) to the U.K. premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob last year. Great minds.
