Lili Reinhart Says Betty's 'Riverdale' Dance Was Supposed to 'Make You Uncomfortable'

One of the most talked-about moments from last week’s Riverdale episode was Betty’s (Lili Reinhart) seductive dance for her South Side Serpent initiation. It was a perplexing scene, to say the least, given its context: Betty didn’t get completely naked, but she did sing “Mad World” from Donnie Darko as she danced around a pole in black lingerie…while her mother, her boyfriend, and dozens of grown men (including Jughead’s father) watched.

It’s obvious why this gave many Riverdale fans pause. After all, she’s only 16 years old and this wasn’t exactly her choice: She only danced to get in with the South Side Serpents, Jughead’s gang, because she thought joining them would make her and Jug closer—even though he’s expressed, several times, that she should stay far away from the group.

Understandably, Twitter quickly blew up with reactions, with many viewers declaring the scene was forced and downright uncomfortable:

But Reinhart says that was exactly the point. “I didn’t think it was going to receive as much backlash as it did,” Reinhart tells Glamour. “People were very caught up with the fact that Betty is 16 and she’s dancing around all these men, but that’s the point. That scene was supposed to make you uncomfortable because you’re watching this girl do something completely out of her comfort zone for the man that she loves. You’re watching her make a personal sacrifice, and that is the most important takeaway.”

Reinhart continued: “It was supposed to make you feel uncomfortable and hard to watch because you don’t want to see Betty go to the dark side like that, but she does because she loves Jughead. It only makes it harder to watch when they break up at the end of the episode because you know that she laid it all out on the line for him. He’s trying to protect her from that darkness, but she wants to be part of it.”

So, yes, it seems Betty was pushed and pulled and pressured into doing that dance. Reinhart, however, says she had complete control and autonomy over it from an actor’s standpoint. She worked in tandem with showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to make sure the scene felt right for Betty—and comfortable for her. (That’s comforting, given the recent wave of actresses who have come forward and talked about feeling pressured to take off their clothes or appear sexier onscreen.)

“We totally talked about it ahead of time,” Reinhart said. “It was kind of an ongoing situation. The first draft that I got didn’t feel right to me, so I called Roberto and was like, ‘I think this should happen. This is how it should be.’ We worked it out. It was all very well-thought-out and not spontaneous. It was planned and premeditated, so I was a part of it from the beginning. I wasn’t surprised.”

Reinhart even choreographed Betty’s movements herself. “It was not easy. It was very intimidating,” she says. “They offered me a pole dancing lesson, like the workout classes girls do, but I was like, ‘No, I don’t think that’s necessary because Betty wouldn’t know how to pole dance. I just want to go in there and feel it out.’ During lunch, before we shot the scene, I was in the set by myself just playing around a little bit and came up with some really simple choreography.”

So what will this breakup mean for Betty and Jughead in the midseason finale? Tune in tonight at 8 P.M. on The CW to find out.

Cole Sprouse Was Finally Asked, Point-Blank, If He's Dating Lili Reinhart

At this point it’s pretty obvious that Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart are more than just friends. Granted, the young Riverdale stars haven’t confirmed anything, but the signs are there. They’re always posting cute photos of each other on social media, they wear each other’s clothes, and they have secretly held hands in public on more than one occasion. I’m willing to bet my framed photo of KJ Apa that these two are an item. OK, so I don’t actually have a framed photo of KJ Apa, but you get my point: Bughead exists IRL (probably).

That being said, no one’s ever asked Reinhart and Sprouse if they’re dating—not directly, at least. Sure, they’ve been thrown softball questions about their personal lives in a general sense—and their answers were deceptively vague—but no one’s come out and asked, point blank, “Are you dating each other?”

Until now. In a new interview with People magazine, Sprouse addresses the rumors head on. He had a simple but telling response when asked about his relationship with Reinhart:: “No comment.”

“Whether you dismiss those rumors or whether you encourage those rumors, it’s giving people who are in my opinion are a bit entitled to your personal life more power, and you have to have spaces for reverence in the industry,” he said. “The more you let people in on that, the more people feel entitled to it and the more it becomes problematic with whoever you end up being with in the future, so I take that very seriously. So I just never talk about it because it’s not anyone’s right to know. People can speculate all they want, people speculate about me with every member of the cast practically, but it’s really no one’s right to know.”

Sprouse is right, of course; his personal life is his own business, and he’s not obligated to share anything. Unfortunately, it looks like fans who want a confirmation will be waiting a long time.

Lili Reinhart Is Now Wearing Cole Sprouse's Clothes in Public

Let’s be honest: Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse’s relationship is more of a mystery than any storyline on Riverdale. (We all know the Black Hood is Betty’s dad or her brother or someone in the Cooper family. The green eyes give him away, people. Moving on.)

The two, who play Betty and Jughead on the hit CW show, have been toying with fans’ emotions for months. There was the time they secretly held hands during a Comic-Con interview. Then, Sprouse gave some ambiguous quote a few months later about how it’s “very pleasing” people link them together. They legit can’t stop posting about each other on social media. All signs point to them being more than friends, but neither has confirmed it. In fact, Reinhart said on Tumblr she’s over people shipping her with her Riverdale co-stars, which hints that maybe nothing’s going on between her and Sprouse at all.

But the evidence that there is just keeps on mounting. Exhibit J (or is it H? I? Z?): this photo of Reinhart wearing Sprouse’s jacket while posing for photos with a young fan. Of course, it’s possible this doesn’t mean anything; maybe Reinhart was just cold, and her capital-P Platonic pal Cole Sprouse graciously lent her his jacket. Then again, though, what if this means everything? What if Reinhart and Sprouse are the IRL version of every rom-com couple in history? Jacket-sharing, after all, is the hallmark of every feel-good love movie. (Well, that and a scene-stealing appearance from Judy Greer.)

Check out the photos for yourself, below:

And here’s a pic of Sprouse wearing the jacket, in case you thought I was lying and thought this was, like, some random scrub’s coat.

Do you hear that? That’s the sound of 10,000 tweens’ hearts exploding.

People Are Swooning Over These Pics 'Riverdale' Actor Cole Sprouse Apparently Took of Lili Reinhart

We’ve evolved from humans who want partners with enough aim to bring down a sabertooth tiger to those who simply want Instagram husbands—real or honorary, and not necessarily men—to snap a picture that makes us look incredible. It’s really not too much to ask: point and click. And filter. And edit. (Like, a little easier on the contrast, maybe?) One so-called “Instagram boyfriend” (quotes because it’s not confirmed!) who seems to have it down is Riverdale‘s own Cole Sprouse, who is apparently taking beautiful photographs of co-star Lili Reinhart. People think that a slew of photos the two have posted are Sprouse originals, and there’s plenty of evidence that points to it.

The photos shared from Reinhart’s account have Sprouse tagged in them, which is why people think he took them—though that hasn’t been explicitly verified. Still, we’ll just admire them as the works of portrait art that they are, whether they’re in arty black and white or (faux?) candid shots of Reinhart checking her appearance in the mirror.

Check out this gorgeous photo, which looks like it was captured as Reinhart was getting ready to head out for the night:

And then there’s this ~ moody ~ rooftop sequence involving a fire escape and a beautiful black dress that we would definitely add to cart:

Sprouse also shared one of his own pics of her, in which she looks like an actual Renaissance angel:

Should these indeed be his, Sprouse is clearly talented at photography—and it seems rather likely these are his: last week, he posted a cover of L’Uomo Vogue that has his work on the cover—and in a beautiful spread featuring Sam Smith (that’s right; this 25-year-old prodigy is landing Vogue covers). Also, his Instagram feed is basically an online art gallery of his other photos.

Not too shabby, Sprouse—we can’t wait to see what other work you create. Between his beind-the-camera talents and Reinhart’s Halloween makeup skills, we are low-key excited for any seasonal photoshoots that may or may not take place in the coming weeks.

Lili Reinhart Says Filming Kissing Scenes With Cole Sprouse Is 'Comfortable'

Riverdale co-stars Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse are keeping their off-screen relationship hush-hush, but what they do on screen is more than public knowledge. Their characters, Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones, are an item on Riverdale, and show-runners have been hinting for months that trouble’s ahead for them. For now, though, they’re still pretty lovey-dovey. Granted, they haven’t turned the heat up quite like Archie and Veronica have (um, that shower scene?), but they do kiss on the show—often. And two weeks ago Betty implied to her mother she and Jughead almost had sex, so it’s safe to say there’s still a ton of passion between them.

That passion, according to Reinhart, isn’t uncomfortable to shoot, either. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, the young actress reveals the Riverdale core four have no qualms about kissing each other on screen.

“I think we’re all so comfortable with one another that it’s not even really a thing,” she said. “If we have a kissing scene, it’s fine. We don’t really think twice about it. When new characters have to kiss, it’s a little different and you’re like, ‘Oh, OK! What this?’ But it’s easy, we’re all friends. It would be more nerve-wracking if you had to make out with someone that you didn’t know. So if by chance we do end up having to kiss each other, it’s fine and it doesn’t feel weird.”

Notice how Reinhart strategically says the word “friends.” She makes no indication that she and Sprouse are more than that. When asked about him, all Reinhart said was, “We get along quite well. We’re doing good.” Ugh, all these evasive responses.

Of course, Reinhart doesn’t have to say anything about her relationship with Sprouse, but all this kissing talk will definitely drive their fans nuts. At this rate, we may never know what’s happening between. Hey, at least we’ll always have Bughead.

A 'Riverdale' Cast Member Just Said He 'Really Likes Cole and Lili Together'

Riverdale returning last week reminded the world of two things: 1) Betty and Jughead are the cutest, and 2) They’d be even cuter if their IRL counterparts, Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse, were also dating off-screen. That latter question has been floating around the Riverdale universe for nearly a year. People are convinced Reinhart and Sprouse are an item, even though neither has confirmed it.

The proof is out there, though. For one, there’s the time they were caught holding hands at San Diego Comic-Con—and then they did it again on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. Toss in a few sweet social media posts and this maybe-snuggle on The Tonight Show, and you have a celebrity relationship mystery for the ages.

And the plot just thickened thanks to Skeet Ulrich, who plays Jughead’s dad (F.P. Jones) on Riverdale. In a new interview with Access Hollywood, the actor accidentally let it slip that he “likes” Reinhart and Sprouse “together.”

When asked who his favorite Riverdale on-screen ships are, Ulrich said, “I really like Cole and Lili together—Betty and Jughead—I think there’s a lot of positive qualities about them together for sure.” Watch his interview for yourself, below:

Granted, Ulrich is most likely talking about Rienhart and Sprouse in the context of the show; that is, after all, what he was asked. But the fact he felt the need to clarify his statement by saying “Betty and Jughead” is suspicious. It’s almost as if he feared people would think he was talking about Reinhart and Sprouse off-screen if he didn’t say the characters’ names. And if that thought did cross his mind, isn’t this a sign something might be going on between C and L?

This Reinhart-Sprouse Instagram fan page certainly thinks so. The account’s runner posted Ulrich’s interview on Tuesday and captioned it, “Skeet nearly exposed himself for shipping both Sprousehart and Bughead.”

Of course, Reinhart and Sprouse never have to confirm their relationship—or lack thereof—to anyone; their personal life is completely their business. Riverdale fans have just as much fun (playfully) obsessing over interviews like this as they do fan theories.
