Netflix's New Thriller Dangerous Lies Looks Like a Lifetime Movie Meets Riverdale


The trailer for Camila Mendes’s new Netflix movie, Dangerous Lies, just dropped, and I have a lot of thoughts.

Remember when Brenda Song starred in the Netflix thriller that gave off serious Lifetime movie vibes? You know, Secret Obsession, where she loses her memory in an accident and Mike Vogel pretends to be her husband, carting her off to a creepy house in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception and a lot of photoshopped couple pics? I think someone at Netflix went into their next pitch meeting and said, “That, but make it actually mysterious!”

“After losing her waitressing job, Katie Franklin (Mendes) takes a job as a caretaker to a wealthy elderly man in his sprawling, empty Chicago estate,” the Netflix description of Dangerous Lies reads on its press website. “The two grow close, but when he unexpectedly passes away and names Katie as his sole heir, she and her husband, Adam (Jessie T. Usher), are pulled into a complex web of lies, deception, and murder. If she’s going to survive, Katie will have to question everyone’s motives—even the people she loves.”

“Even the people she loves” means her husband, guys. Seriously, based on the trailer, Adam seems to really enjoy all that new money a bit too much, and you know how much Lifetime loves a sketchy husband. Apparently, Netflix does, too! Still, the whole thing also reads like a grown-up, movie-length episode of Riverdale with its New England landscape, noir lighting, that diner, and all the hot people (including Cam Gigandet and Jamie Chung).

Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention the Knives Out parallels, considering the hilarious whodunit that graced us with Chris Evans in that cozy sweater also centers around a caretaker who’s left with a fortune after her employer dies of questionable causes. (Quick question, can someone get Jessie T. Usher in the sweater, STAT?)

Dangerous Lies hits Netflix on April 30. With all these references in mind, how could you not give it a watch?

These Alternate Scene Ideas for ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Are So, So Funny


Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Big Little Lies‘ second season wrapped up on Sunday night with the Monterey Five, led by Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz), seemingly walking into the police station to turn themselves in for the roles they played in Perry Wright’s death. We also got to see Celeste (Nicole Kidman) demolish Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) on the stand and retain custody of her children, Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) and Ed (Adam Scott) renew their wedding vows, Renata (Laura Dern) expertly destroy her husband’s model trains with a baseball bat, and Jane (Shailene Woodley) finally find some happiness with her surfer boyfriend.

Fans had mixed reactions to the finale—and the season as a whole—and took to social media to express both their delight and outrage. Now a new thread on Twitter, started by writer and Keep It! podcast host Ira Madison III, has people discussing alternate events that could have happened to the BLL gang. “Now that #BigLittleLies is over what were your favorite movements [sic] this season?” he wrote. “I’m torn between Mary Louise burying Bonnie alive for killing her son and Jane’s new aquarium boyfriend turning out to be an eco-terrorist who takes her and Ziggy hostage.”

People got seriously creative in the replies. There were references to HBO’s other hit show of the year, Game of Thrones. “When it was revealed Madeline’s daughter Chloe is the Three Eyed Raven I screamed,” one user suggested. Also, people brought up the recent college admissions scandal involving wealthy parents, like Felicity Huffman and Lori Laughlin, buying their kids’ way into university. “When Madeline and Abigail almost get caught up in the USC admissions scandal but Chloe blabs to her teacher and ruins it,” someone tweeted.

This ‘Big Little Lies’ Finale Courtroom Scene Should Be Required Viewing


The key word here is unfairly. Too many women have suffered like Celeste, whether it be from domestic violence, sexual assault, any sort of physical abuse, or even being asked to defend their ability to mother. It’s unfair that women are asked to endure and persist and persevere. But they are, consistently. And they do, constantly.

Celeste has always been painted as the daintiest member of the Monterey Five—she was the demure, stylish, slender wife to the stereotypically (toxically) masculine Perry. But I won’t say she was depicted as weak, because she is not and has never been weak. She’s been beaten down, physically and metaphorically, but in the season finale we see her rise.

As Mary Louise so graciously pointed out in court, Celeste had a slew of one-night stands, a scuffle with an Ambien haze which led to a minor car accident, and was tasked with raising two grief-stricken children while attending therapy for her own trauma. And through it all, she peeled every part of herself off the ground and sculpted herself into a composed, acute lawyer. A woman capable of winning her own custody battle. Watching Celeste win her courtroom battle in the face of such anguish was nothing short of heroic.

I’m grateful for the array of female characters women have to look up to these days, but unfortunately, in real life we don’t have masked or caped superheroes zipping through our skies and saving us from evil. So I think it’s important for us to reexamine and identify who gets to be called a hero. For me, especially right now, when our very rights and livelihoods are being called into question (yet again), those heroes are women like Celeste. Strong women who have every reason to stop pushing forward, women who are justified in giving up but who exorcise every iota of strength they have left. That’s real female strength and heroism, because we’ve seen that woman IRL. We see her every day.

Big Little Lies Season Two Finale: People Have a Lot of Thoughts


This post contains spoilers for the second season of Big Little Lies.

It feels like we just got reunited with the Monterey Five on HBO’s Big Little Lies, and now the season has already come to an end with last night’s finale on HBO. The show’s return has been marked by divided reactions from fans—and some reported off- set drama about of who was in charge of the season’s overall vision.

But even if you weren’t so thrilled with season two, it was still a helluva a ride for the most part. Last night alone brought us another classic Renata (Laura Dern) moment when she destroyed Gordon’s (very expensive) model trains while screaming, “Maybe you should have shown a woman a little respect!” Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) went full Midsommar/Coachella for her vow renewal with Ed. And then there was that courtroom showdown between Celeste (Nicole Kidman) and Mary Louise (Meryl Streep). Oh, and Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) decided to leave her husband and turn herself in—which led to the other woman, including Jane (Shailene Woodley), joining her at the police station in the episode’s final scene.

But the cross-examination scene, which revealed that Mary Louise had a car accident that killed Perry’s brother as well as a video that showed Perry abusing Celeste, was probably the night’s biggest moment. Fans reacted accordingly on social media, even drawing comparisons between Celeste and Witherspoon’s Elle Woods.

Laura Dern has also given us so much this season—including a lifetime’s worth of GIFs. “Nothing but respect for my president renata klein,” one fan tweeted.

This Big Little Lies Theory Makes a Convincing Case That Corey Is Perry's Brother


The end of Big Little Lies’ second season is near, and fans are eagerly waiting to see how the hit HBO show will tie all of its loose threads together. The series is known for its surprise reveals and cliffhangers, so it’s understandable why fans think there are major twists on the way as the finale approaches—and one theory involves Jane Chapman’s love interest, Corey.

According to Reddit user emmyeggo, Corey (Douglas Smith) might be more than just a guy Jane (played by Shailene Woodley) has been dating: He could be Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgård) brother. If you watched episode five of season two—spoilers ahead—then you remember that Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) saw Corey leaving the police station, sparking speculation that he’s an undercover cop. On episode six, he denies being a detective, but emmyeggo thinks he’s still hiding that he and Perry are related.

The Reddit user writes that they’ve based their theory on a few different details, including the structure of Liane Moriarty’s previous books. Namely, that you can “expect the unexpected.” The episode seven description also says Celeste “questions Mary-Louise about a tragic event from Perry’s childhood.”

So far, there have been several mentions of Perry’s deceased brother—something emmyeggo believes could be part of a big twist. “It’s highly likely that there was some sort of trauma inflicted upon Perry, and it’s not too far-fetched to believe that Mary-Louise had a motive to fake her other son’s death. There could be a myriad of logical explanations for this (of which we know Celeste starts to ‘question,’)” emmyeggo writes.

“Also to keep in mind – the way that the ’Perry was Jane’s rapist’ plot twist was so effective is because Jane and Perry were never introduced to each other in present time, so the audience struggled to put the two and two together,” emmyeggo continues. “Though Corey and Mary-Louise have been a big part of Jane’s life this season, Corey and Mary-Louise have actually never been in the same scene together…” “Jane also has a flashback to her assault when dancing with Corey, which would make sense if they were brothers. Celeste also looks at Corey very strangely at Amabella’s party.”

The Reddit user also points out that Mary-Louise mentioned that her husband remarried after the trauma, which could also open Perry up to having step siblings. Even if Corey turns out to have known Perry in some way, there’s still the question of what his motives could be in establishing a relationship with Jane.

People Are Not Happy Big Little Lies Cut This Infamous Ice Cream Scene


We’re now five episodes deep in season two of Big Little Lies, and the lies are finally clawing their way to the surface. But you know what didn’t claw its way to the surface? The infamous ice cream cone scene, which was cut from last night’s episode.

Remember last year when photos of Reese Witherspoon launching an ice cream at Meryl Streep’s back tore through the Internet? Who wouldn’t? I mean, when an Academy Award-winning actor throws dessert at another Academy Award-winning actor, the world tunes in. In fact, I shouldn’t be asking if you remember those photos. I should be asking: Where were you when photos of Reese Witherspoon throwing an ice cream cone at Meryl Streep hit the internet?

I was excited to see how it would all unfold on Big Little Lies—but unfortunately, the highly-anticipated scene aired during last night’s episode and ends with Madeline (Witherspoon) simply leering at Mary Louise (Streep) while clutching her cone with a vice-grip. Yes, reader: HBO actually cut the cone throw. And now I have nothing.

I have over a decade left on paying off my student loans. I have a credit card bill that’s skyrocketing with no end in sight. I can barely afford to keep my healthcare. I endured a 6.9 earthquake this weekend that made me slither into my Amazon Prime cart and slam the purchase button on a pair of emergency radios. I’m just about prepped and ready for the apocalypse. In other words, I have one thing that I look forward to every week: watching Academy-Award winning women glare at their onscreen husbands on Sunday nights. I’d hoped the ice cream cone throw could bolster my spirits for at least a month; now, this injustice has made me do a lot of thinking.
