If You’re Going Through a Breakup, You Could Win This Trip Inspired by ‘The Holiday’

Remember The Holiday, the 2006 romantic comedy starring Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz as two women who agree to swap their equally gorgeous homes over Christmas? Of course you do, it’s a classic (if, admittedly, kind of flawed). In it, both women are motivated to travel for the holiday after a big breakup; Winslet’s character, Iris, heads to sunny Los Angeles, while Diaz’s Amanda relocates to a cozy cottage in Surrey, England.

It sounds like the kind of dream situation that could work out only in a rom-com…but what if we told you there’s a chance it could become a reality? A U.K. company called Independent Cottages is hosting a contest for anyone going through a breakup who’d like to channel The Holiday for a few nights.

Entering is easy, but there is one big rule: You can enter the competition only if you’ve “had your heart broken” this year. “Whether you’ve been dumped, ended a relationship that wasn’t working out, or realised you were lusting after someone who didn’t feel the same way, take a leaf out of Cameron Diaz’s book and mend your heart with a cottage stay in the glorious English countryside this winter,” the website reads. If this applies to you, all you have to do is go to independentcottages.co.uk and share your breakup story.

This could be you.

A romance with Jude Law isn’t included, according to Independent Cottages, but the winner will receive a three-night stay at Farthing Cottage in the Cotswolds (which looks remarkably like the one Iris owns in the film), a “bottle of fizz,” and a box of chocolate. Sounds delightful. Bonus: The cottage will be decorated for Christmas and includes a log-burning fire (because of course there needs to be one), a four-poster bed, stone walls, and “heaps of old English character.”

And Winslet reportedly lives in the Cotswolds IRL, so there’s a chance you can channel The Holiday in more ways than one.

Try your luck and enter the contest before midnight on December 2.

'The Knight Before Christmas' Review: There's a Reason This Holiday Rom-Com Is So Satisfying

Vanessa Hudgens won Christmas last year with her Netflix rom-com, The Princess Switch. The film was a viral sensation, filled to the brim with the feel-good, low-stakes hijinks we’ve come to expect from our holiday movies. A sequel to that now classic is coming in 2020, but while we wait, Hudgens has another holiday flick for us: The Knight Before Christmas. And I’m pleased to report it’s very, very good.

The plot of the movie is delightfully bonkers: A knight from 1334, Sir Cole (Josh Whitehouse), time travels to present day Ohio and meets a science teacher, Brooke (Vanessa Hudgens), after she accidentally hits him with her car. The doctors think Sir Cole has a head injury, which is why they aren’t fazed when he says he’s from medieval times. They think his memory will return in time and he’ll be back to “normal.” But days go by, and Sir Cole still contests he’s a knight. Brooke starts to wonder if he’s telling the truth, until—spoiler alert—she realizes he very much is, and they live happily ever after.

Much like Amy Adams’s character in Enchanted, the humor in The Knight Before Christmas stems from Sir Cole attempting to navigate the modern world. He pulls out a sword to fight Brooke’s ex-boyfriend, calls cars “steel steeds,” is enamored with televisions (a.k.a “magic boxes that make merry”), and thinks neckties are tiny torture devices. Brooke finds Sir Cole’s naiveté endearing, though, and romance blossoms. Not much about The Knight Before Christmas is realistic, but that’s the point. It’s pure, unabashed escapism in the best way possible.

“I think all rom-coms, on some level, are fairy tales, and I liked dropping the pretense and just owning it,” Monika Mitchell, the director of The Knight Before Christmas, tells Glamour.

Finding pure joy in 2019 is hard, after all, which is probably why rom-coms have become a booming business again. “I guess we all need to believe in magic a little bit more now than before,” Mitchell says. “These movies are entertainment, and that’s OK. They’re art, but they’re commercial art. They’re designed to be entertaining to the entire family so that a group of loved ones can sit together. Everyone has something in there that they can hold on to. Watching something that makes you happy is legitimate. To be happy at the end of something you invest an hour and a half of your life in is completely legitimate.”

Kate Middleton and Mary Berry Are Joining Forces for a Holiday Cooking Show

Our two favorite British worlds are colliding soon!

In the purest news of the day, the Sun reports that Kate Middleton and Mary Berry will appear together on a holiday special. The Duchess of Cambridge and The Great British Bake Off’s beloved judge alumna will join forces for a BBC1 seasonal special, in which they’ll work together to make a Christmas feast for charity workers.

The program is reportedly being called “The Mary Berry Royal Christmas Show.” Middleton and Berry apparently have already bonded over their shared love of charity work, and the show will put their friendship on TV for an important meal. The Mirror suggests that the feast might be hosted at “royal venue,” and that Berry will be in charge of the food, while Middleton will help out. “They will bring seasonal goodwill to their guests and to the millions of viewers watching. Expect a properly uplifting Christmas treat,” the Mirror‘s source added. There’s no premiere date quite yet so fans will just have to keep an eye out.

Middleton seems to be more comfortable with TV and film projects these days; back in September, sources said she took a meeting with Love Actually director Richard Curtis to discuss a potential collaboration on something involving mental health. It’s still not totally clear what they’re cooking up, but it all seems to reinforce the idea that Middleton has been taking charge more, doing things she likes, and focusing on causes that are important to her. A People story pointed out that in addition to confidently steering work on parenthood and child development, she’s allegedly writing her own speeches and showing more of her personality while meeting with U.K. organizers. Even the Queen is said to be quite proud of her lately!

“She is now more open with what she wants to say, and funnily enough, she is more relaxed as well,” a family source told People. It looks like this TV moment with Mary Berry is going to offer another chance for Middleton to get personal—and a delightful opportunity for all of us to see this adorable friendship keep unfolding.

Kristin Davis's Netflix Movie Holiday in the Wild Was Four Years in the Making

What do you think makes Holiday in the Wild stand out from all the other holiday movies coming out this year?

Kristin: The fact that it’s shot in Africa, number one. Even if we leave out the animal part, it’s just in a different setting. It’s more of a travel-adventure movie, in a way; it just happens to be a Christmas movie, but we’re having Christmas in a different place—which is nice. It makes you think about your own Christmas traditions, and then you look at other people’s Christmas traditions and think about them in a new way. Rob [Lowe] brings so much wry humor, which I don’t think you always get in a Christmas movie.

It does feel like the holiday movie genre is having a bit of a renaissance. Why do you think it’s so popular?

Kristin: I think people are very stressed. The world is a stressful place, and the holidays are a time when hopefully we get a little break from that stress. People want entertainment that gives them a good feeling. It’s a nice break. People want to be together; they want to watch things they can watch with the whole family. It’s a time that’s become more important because of the continual 24-hour news cycle and all the things going on in the world. All the difficulties.

Would you be open to doing another holiday movie?

Kristin: Of course! Holiday in the Wild sets the bar pretty high. I think now I’m just going to have to only do holiday movies with animals!

Like a sequel?

Kristin: A sequel would be amazing. I don’t know exactly what we would do or what would happen. For me, shooting in South Africa and Zambia and being able to be around elephants, which is one of my big loves of my life, and getting to write a love letter in the script to the people who take care of them, it really is a dream come true. I never really actually thought the film would get made, so it would be hard to live up to this one.

What did you most relate to with your character, Kate? She sends her son off to college and within seconds her husband leaves her. She goes through a lot just in the first 10 minutes of this movie.

Kristin: I responded to her having her eyes open on this trip she ends up taking by herself to a whole other world and a whole other way people are living and to this crisis of elephant poaching that she had no idea about. I responded to that because that’s very much like my own life.

When it comes to your own holiday pop-culture consumption, what are you looking for?

Kristin: I’m looking for something that I can watch with my daughter [Gemma Rose]. She loves Christmas, and when you have kids it’s all about their enjoyment.

How do you think Charlotte York from Sex and the City would take to Kate’s situation in Holiday in the Wild?

Kristin: I think she would be exactly like me! If for some horrible reason Harry left her—which I don’t think he would—and she was going on a single trip to Zambia and found an orphan elephant, I think she’d respond exactly the way that Kate does or that I did.

Holiday in the Wild is now streaming on Netflix.
