The Mullet Haircut Is Coming Back and I…Don't Hate It?

You know what they say: History repeats itself. But unlike your ex who resurfaces like clockwork each December, some relics of the past are a pleasant—if not shocking—surprise when they come back from the dead. Flip phones and scrunchies are a perfect example. However, in a strange turn of events, a trend once reserved strictly for awkward family photos and ’80s rock bands is having a resurgence among it-girls. The mullet is officially back. And against all odds, it’s honestly not terrible.

As with most highly polarizing trends, the look first made its unanticipated revival on the runway (you can thank Gucci and YSL, specifically) and has been popping up in high-fashion campaigns for a few seasons. But a quick scroll through Instagram proves it’s now catching wind with celebrities and influencers.

Miley Cyrus, for example, recently debuted a short, wispy version courtesy of hairstylist Sally Hershberger. However, unlike her dad Billy Ray—who once rocked an extremely ’80s business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back cut—her look is a bit more polished, if you can say that about a mullet. It’s a “modern mullet,” as Hershberger calls it; more ’70s shag, less Achy Breaky Heart.

All of this begs the question, though: Why is the mullet returning? Is that seriously something we as a society are ready for?

Well, yes, says Laurie Heaps, the mastermind behind Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira’s new mullet. But maybe only if you remember Billy Ray Cyrus’ biggest hit as Old Town Road. According to Heaps, the trend is set to gain steam in the new decade particularly among free-spirited, individualistic Gen Z-ers. “Twenty-twenty is going to be the year of experimentation—but as with all trends, they fade and then come back stronger with new generations,” she says. “We’re feeling freer, breaking norms, and going against the grain. The look is bold and strong—it’s kind of a renaissance of female empowerment. As women feel freer to express themselves, styles like the mullet are re-emerging.”

Despite famous people’s ability to make this risky cut appear decidedly cool on the internet, taking the plunge IRL might seem like a stretch. But a little fringe goes a long way, and you can channel the vibe without venturing into full-blown mullet mode. Everyone from Kaia Gerber to Dakota Johnson has tried a shaggy cut, and Hershberger (creator of Meg Ryan’s iconic choppy look and so many more) doesn’t see it slowing down. “I definitely think we’re going to see more texture and choppiness this year—and the style can work for any hair type,” she says. “If you want to get the shagginess without getting a mullet haircut, just leave the sides longer.”

If you’re still slightly shook at the thought of getting a mullet, just remember: It’s 2020, the year after millions pledged to storm Area 51 and an egg dethroned Kylie Jenner on Instagram—so really, anything’s possible. If an unabashed mullet is what we need to cope with the uniformly absurd news cycle, I say hop (or chop?) to it.

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton Reportedly Hate Being Pitted Against Each Other

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Kate Middleton, and Prince William aren’t actually feuding, despite all the crazy rumors. As sources have explained recently, they’re simply on “different paths.” Still, one insider tells People this week that all the rivalry gossip has afected both Middleton and Markle; they reportedly find being pitted against each “challenging.”

The source echoes a lot of what has been previously said of the two families simply wanting to carry out their separate engagements. “Meghan is very aware that Kate will be Queen; their roles are very clear,” the source says, adding “What’s challenging is when they are pitted against each other. That’s been challenging to both of them. Meghan has her life, Kate has hers.”

The two have been friendly toward one another and have hung out on multiple occasions. They might not be intimately close, but the source notes they simply came into the family from very different places. Markle, the source points out, was a “fully-formed person” who had been working for years when she married Prince Harry. Middleton started dating Prince William in college and had years to cultivate her role. That has meant their approach to public life is specific to their background.

“William and Kate toe the line, maybe because they have to, but Harry and Meghan are saying no—no to releasing the names of Archie’s godparents, no to saying where Meghan gave birth,” the source said. “They are trying to carve out a different sort of public life and reset the rules.”

Katie Nicholl, a royals expert, told Glamour a few months back that rumors of a feud between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle were exaggerated. “I do know that Meghan and Kate have come to an agreement to get along, to make an effort, to be amiable and warm toward each other in public,” she said.

This ‘Game of Thrones’ Theory Suggests Sansa and Daenerys Will Hate Each Other

The season eight premiere of Game of Thrones is roughly a month away, and fans can’t stop buzzing. Of course, it doesn’t help that HBO keeps dropping new pics and promos every other day. With each update, viewers get a little more excited—and they post about a billion fan theories on the Internet.

The latest one, based on a brand-new pic of Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), is particularly interesting. Earlier this week HBO released a new GoT poster featuring Sansa wearing what looks like a scaly, navy-color outfit and sitting on the Iron Throne. This might seem innocuous at first, but remember the house sigil for the House of Tully—Sansa’s mother’s house—is a fish. The House of Tully’s words are family, duty, and honor, so Sansa’s wearing scales implies she has every intention of keeping up those values when she finally meets Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in season eight. And that’s bad news for both Dany and Jon Snow (Kit Harington). If Sansa plans to honor her family in the season ahead, that basically means Daenerys will be enemy number one (among the living, at least)—with Jon right behind her, given that he bent the knee to Dany and pledged the North’s allegiance to her.

Why is that, you ask? Remember, the Targaryens burned Sansa’s grandfather and Uncle Brandon alive. Plus, Rhaegar Targaryen “kidnapped” Jon’s mother, Lyanna Stark (Ned’s sister and Sansa’s aunt), which is what started the last war in the kingdoms. So, in other words, the Targareyens have done some serious damage to the North—Sansa’s territory.

Check out her outfit in the Instagram video, below. She appears in the fifth slide:

People in the North haven’t forgotten about what the Targareyens did to them, and Sansa certainly hasn’t. In season seven she reminded Jon of all the damage they caused, and the other Northern Lords cheered her on. Sansa clearly has an ax to grind, and this new photo suggests she’ll have no problem grinding it when she and Daenerys finally meet face-to-face.

And here I was hoping these two would be best friends. We’ll find out everything for sure when Game of Thrones premieres Sunday, April 14, on HBO.

The First Trailer For *The Hate U Give* Is Here, and It's Powerful

The Hate U Give was a critical and commercial success when it hit bookstands in February 2017. The young adult novel by Angie Thomas tells the story of Starr Carter, a 16-year-old black girl who lives a double life of sorts: at home in her mostly-black neighborhood, Garden Heights, and at the predominately white prep school she attends. Her world changes, though, when her friend Khalil is shot by a white police officer after they’re pulled over one evening. What transpires is a gripping narrative that explores police brutality and how Starr uses her voice to effect change.

The book was quickly optioned for a movie, with Amandla Stenberg tapped to play Starr Carter. And now we have an early glimpse of Stenberg in the role. The first trailer for The Hate U Give just dropped, and it’s powerful and poignant. Regina Hall, Common, Issa Rae, and KJ Apa also have roles in the movie, which seems to be a faithful adaptation of the source material.

Check it out for yourself, below:

Glamour talked to Thomas last year about The Hate U Give shortly after its release, where she noted the difference between being anti-cop and anti-police brutality. “I always like to point out that this book is not anti-cop. For some reason, you say ‘black lives matter’ and people automatically assume you’re saying that blue lives don’t matter. It’s not like that,” she said. “I like to say that it’s like when people say, ‘I can’t be racist; I have a black friend.’ I say, ‘Well, my book can’t be anti-cop; Starr has a cop uncle.’ It’s not anti-cop; it’s anti–police brutality, and those aren’t the same thing.”

The Hate U Give arrives in theaters October 19, 2018.

Bella Hadid Wore a Cardigan as a Dress, and Honestly We Don't Hate It

Bella Hadid could belt a paper bag and still look like the coolest girl in the room, so we’re honestly not that surprised that she just made a piece of basic outerwear into a fashion statement.

The model was spotted leaving the Prabal Gurung fashion show during New York Fashion Week wearing a black cardigan as a mini dress, paired with knee-high black boots and her signature little shades. We can’t even call this a sweater dress because, well, note the zipper and the hood. Belted with a fanny pack and fitted to sit off-the-shoulder, we had to do a double take to realize it is in fact, a sweatshirt-style cardigan. Take a look:

And a closer one:

Bella wore the same cardigan while she was rehearsing for the Prabal Gurung show earlier that day. However she paired it with a simple white T-shirt underneath, and left off the fanny pack belt.

Whether the look was created because Bella forgot to pack a change of clothes to wear for the rest of the night or just really believed in the knit piece’s going-out potential, we’re into it.

Amal and George Clooney Donate $1 Million to the Southern Poverty Law Center's Fight Against Hate Groups

PHOTO: David M. Benett/Getty Images

Amal and George Clooney are adding their considerable power to the fight against bigotry and hate in the U.S. In a press release issued Monday, the Southern Poverty Law Center revealed that the Clooneys have donated $1 million via their Clooney Foundation for Justice to the center’s fight against hate groups.

“We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States. What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate,” the new parents said in the release. SPLC President Richard Cohen added, “Like George and Amal Clooney, we were shocked by the size, ugliness, and ferocity of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville. It was a reflection of just how much Trump’s incendiary campaign and presidency has energized the radical right. We are deeply grateful to the Clooney Foundation for standing with us at this critical moment in our country’s fight against hate.”

In another statement released to Deadline, the power couple said, “Amal and I wanted to add our voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality. There are no two sides to bigotry and hate.”

The additional statement is possibly a direct reference to President Donald Trump’s own statement on the clash between white supremacist groups and counter-protestors in Charlottesville earlier this month, which resulted in the death of one counter-protestor. “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence, on many sides. On many sides,” he said on Saturday, August 13, before doubling down in the following week, telling reporters, “I think there is blame on both sides. You had a group on one side that was bad. You had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say that. I’ll say it right now.”

Per the press release, the SPLC is a nonprofit watchdog organization that keeps a close eye on hate groups in America. “It currently tracks more than 1,600 extremist groups operating across the country, and has used litigation to win crushing court judgments against 10 major white supremacist organizations and 50 individuals who led them or participated in violent acts.” The Clooney Foundation for Justice was founded in 2016 “to advance justice in courtrooms, communities, and classrooms around the world,” according to its website. In the span of less than a year, the foundation has partnered with UNICEF to expand educational opportunities for Syrian refugees, offered support and assistance to Syrian and Yazidi refugees seeking resettlement in the U.S. and developed TrialWatch, an initiative to prevent especially susceptible courtrooms from committing human rights violations.
