The Mullet Haircut Is Coming Back and I…Don't Hate It?

You know what they say: History repeats itself. But unlike your ex who resurfaces like clockwork each December, some relics of the past are a pleasant—if not shocking—surprise when they come back from the dead. Flip phones and scrunchies are a perfect example. However, in a strange turn of events, a trend once reserved strictly for awkward family photos and ’80s rock bands is having a resurgence among it-girls. The mullet is officially back. And against all odds, it’s honestly not terrible.

As with most highly polarizing trends, the look first made its unanticipated revival on the runway (you can thank Gucci and YSL, specifically) and has been popping up in high-fashion campaigns for a few seasons. But a quick scroll through Instagram proves it’s now catching wind with celebrities and influencers.

Miley Cyrus, for example, recently debuted a short, wispy version courtesy of hairstylist Sally Hershberger. However, unlike her dad Billy Ray—who once rocked an extremely ’80s business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back cut—her look is a bit more polished, if you can say that about a mullet. It’s a “modern mullet,” as Hershberger calls it; more ’70s shag, less Achy Breaky Heart.

All of this begs the question, though: Why is the mullet returning? Is that seriously something we as a society are ready for?

Well, yes, says Laurie Heaps, the mastermind behind Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira’s new mullet. But maybe only if you remember Billy Ray Cyrus’ biggest hit as Old Town Road. According to Heaps, the trend is set to gain steam in the new decade particularly among free-spirited, individualistic Gen Z-ers. “Twenty-twenty is going to be the year of experimentation—but as with all trends, they fade and then come back stronger with new generations,” she says. “We’re feeling freer, breaking norms, and going against the grain. The look is bold and strong—it’s kind of a renaissance of female empowerment. As women feel freer to express themselves, styles like the mullet are re-emerging.”

Despite famous people’s ability to make this risky cut appear decidedly cool on the internet, taking the plunge IRL might seem like a stretch. But a little fringe goes a long way, and you can channel the vibe without venturing into full-blown mullet mode. Everyone from Kaia Gerber to Dakota Johnson has tried a shaggy cut, and Hershberger (creator of Meg Ryan’s iconic choppy look and so many more) doesn’t see it slowing down. “I definitely think we’re going to see more texture and choppiness this year—and the style can work for any hair type,” she says. “If you want to get the shagginess without getting a mullet haircut, just leave the sides longer.”

If you’re still slightly shook at the thought of getting a mullet, just remember: It’s 2020, the year after millions pledged to storm Area 51 and an egg dethroned Kylie Jenner on Instagram—so really, anything’s possible. If an unabashed mullet is what we need to cope with the uniformly absurd news cycle, I say hop (or chop?) to it.

Miley Cyrus Just Got the Edgiest Short Haircut

Miley Cyrus has experimented with her hair several times throughout the past few years. Just last year the singer debuted an edgy, razor-cut “modern mullet” that she got first with her mom, Tish Cyrus, and then with the guidance of celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger. But for 2020, she’s going even edgier—and shorter.

Cyrus posted several photos to Instagram this week that show off her new, punk-rock shag cut, which, again, comes after a session with Hershberger. “New Hair. New Year . NEW MUSIC!” she captioned three separate images. Compared to the mullet she was sporting last November, this shag is shorter and wispier, and as Hershberger said in an email, “It’s a very fashion-forward look yet very no-fuss, both reflective of Miley’s personality.”

Hershberger is known for her shags, and she explained that she kept things pretty natural when it came to Miley’s version. “To get the edgy look, I point-cut her hair and then used a razor to slice it into a shag—it was a very organic process,” she said. “To style it, we did a rough dry and then I used my 24K Vanity Hair Shaping Balm and 24K Golden Touch Nourishing Dry Oil to finish off the piecey look.”

This hairstyle might also be an indicator of Miley Cyrus’s mood as she starts working on new music, which she’s promised a few times now. In December, following her split from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth and rumors she’d ended things with boyfriend Cody Simpson (which were untrue), Cyrus released an emotional holiday song, aptly titled, “My Sad Christmas Song”. She was met with tons of support from her fans, but perhaps she’s moved on from melancholy and is ready for a rock-inspired sound. She hinted as much with pictures she posted later that show her carrying around a guitar.

Either way, we love this look—and can’t wait for the new music.

Invisible Layers Are the Best Haircut for Subtle Volume

Thanks in part to Jennifer Aniston, a whole generation of women chopped their hair into flippy layers, never to return to the style again. While the term “layers” may bring to mind flashbacks of a choppy cut that needed heavy styling, the technique has had an overhaul in recent years and is now so much more less work. “Invisible layers” are the secret for adding that whole cool-without-trying thing to your haircut in a totally modern way, no harsh layers in sight.

“The most modern variation of layering is a slight angle around your face, usually starting around your chin and working its way down to the length,” says celebrity hairstylist Alex Brown. If you’ve ever looked at literally any it-girl’s —Suki Waterhouse, Alexa Chung, Chloë Grace Moretz—perfectly tussled shag cut and wondered how she gets all that movement without sacrificing length, invisible layers are to thank. The trick is to keep the layers long and seamless to take out weight, and add texture and volume without looking too obvious. “Blending the layers is very important—they have to be cut properly to look seamless,” says Brown. “Using a technique to remove weight from the ends will make the layers appear very soft and blended.”

According to Joel Warren, founder and creator of The Salon Project, this technique works best for fine hair and anyone who wants that effortless, wavy look nearly every influencer has on Instagram. “Seamless layers are created by blending the ends of the hair and keeping a straight line while doing this,” says Warren. “This way the hair that is cut falls smoothly on top of one another to eliminate choppiness.”

In addition to movement, another benefit of this style is that it instantly defines your face and brings all the attention right to your cheekbones. “How the hair frames and hits your face can completely change your overall face shape,” says Brown. “I love a layer that hits near the cheekbone to accentuate it.” She recommends asking your stylist for slight layering around your face (just past the chin) to open up your face and add movement, as well as very light layering through the interior.

If you’re currently growing out choppy layers, fear not, as you can transition to invisible ones, it’s just going to take some time. Brown says to be patient, and under no circumstances let anyone add more layers. Instead, she suggests wearing your hair up or wavy to hide the layers, and get a trim every three to four months to clean the ends. She also says to only have your stylist cut out weight, not length. In no time you’ll have the face-framing, shaggy layers of your dreams. Consider yourself an honorary it-girl.

Kim Kardashian Gets Haircut in a Parking Lot From Chris Appleton — Photo

There is little Kim Kardashian won’t do when it comes to maintaining her aesthetic, and as it turns out, that includes getting a spontaneous haircut in the middle of a parking lot in Hollywood.

The KKW Beauty founder posted a series of Instagram Stories on Wednesday, October 30, in which she showed up to stylist Chris Appleton’s gym for a quick split-end fix. In the first clip, Kardashian says, “Okay, so what do you do when you need a haircut mid-drive? You call Chris at the gym and he borrows scissors from the gym and we’re in a random apartment complex parking lot in Hollywood.” Appleton then chimes in with, “No one would believe it.”

In the following clips, Kardashian explains that she had Appleton cut it shorter earlier this week and jokes that she’s been “putting him through hell” since. Nonetheless, you can see the British hairstylist smiling and laughing along with her as he works his magic. “You gotta get it right,” he says in her Instagram clips. Once Appleton is finished, Kardashian shows off her fresh haircut, which features long, shiny layers and lots of volume.

Naturally, Appleton shared the hilarious hair moment with his fans, too. He posted a video of the scenario to his own Instagram with the cheeky caption, “Hair 911 on Hollywood Blvd with @kimkardashian.” In response, fans praised him with comments like, “Only an icon could make this happen and it look this good?!?! ????” and “Just goes to show, it ain’t the scissors but rather who’s wielding them!”

Leave it to Kardashian to get an impromptu cut in a parking lot and walk away looking like she just left a five-star salon. We can’t say we’re not impressed.

Hilary Duff Says Her New Haircut Was Inspired by Lizzie McGuire

Earlier this year Miley Cyrus broke the internet when she debuted a Hannah Montana–inspired haircut, and now another Disney icon is following suit: Hilary Duff. The actress-slash-singer unveiled a new haircut on Instagram last night, and she straight up admitted it was inspired by Lizzie McGuire, the Disney Channel character who catapulted her to superstardom. (She played the preteen heroine for two seasons in the early aughts, as well as in 2003’s The Lizzie McGuire Movie.)

“I kind of have been itching for my Lizzie McGuire bangs for a while,” she told Refinery29 about the new look, which you can check out in the screenshot, below:

And in this Instagram post.

According to R29, Duff chopped about three inches off her hair and trimmed her bangs slightly. “Got a short do,” she posted to her Instagram Story, tagging her stylist, Nikki Lee.

The hair is absolutely Lizzie McGuire–esque. You can perhaps see the similarities best in this shot from The Lizzie McGuire movie, below.

Mandy Moore Shares the Emotional Reason Behind Her New Haircut

Mandy Moore surprised fans on Instagram Thursday (March 7) when she debuted her new bob haircut. The look, done by Garnier consulting hair stylist Ashley Streicher, is beyond chic: slightly darker than Moore’s normal hair color and styled in loose, beachy waves.

“Surprise! I got a chop,” Moore posted to Instagram yesterday alongside photos of her new hair, taken by Jenna Jones. “I stayed true to my brunette roots, so I wanted to make a big change with my cut.” (The color, in case you’re curious, is Garnier Nutrisse Shade 53 and it’s less than $10.)

See Moore’s post for yourself, below:

The This Is Us actress decided to switch up her hair for two reasons. Her first one is pretty standard. “I just got done with work,” Moore told Access Hollywood in a new interview. “I have to look a certain way for eight months out of the year, so I’m like, ‘Celebrate! Do something different.'”

Her second reason, though, is more emotionally charged, and one anyone who’s been through a particularly fraught experience might relate. A few weeks ago, Moore was one of several women featured in a New York Times article detailing misconduct allegations against musician Ryan Adams. Moore and Adams were married for seven years, and during their relationship she says he was psychologically abusive toward her. Changing her hair, Moore says, helped her close that dark chapter of her life—which she had to revisit for the article—for good.

“The last couple weeks have been sort of—I’m not going to get emotional—have been emotionally turbulent in a way,” she said. “I think there is something significant about shedding dead weight and moving forward.”

Watch Mandy Moore explain this for yourself, below:

Moore says the support she’s received since coming forward about Adams has been overwhelming in the most positive way. “I’m happy that people—women, specifically—who have been in abusive situations of any form feel seen and heard and recognized,” she says. “That’s what I was most surprised about by speaking out: feeling like other women were like, ‘Thank you. I’m encouraged to come forward now.'”
