A New Docuseries Focusing on the Disappearance of Carole Baskin's First Husband Is Happening


While much of the fascination with Netflix‘s Tiger King centers on its main subject, Joe Exotic, his nemesis Carole Baskin has received almost as much attention.

In the Netflix show, we learn that Joe has been accused (and spoiler alert: convicted) of hiring someone to kill Baskin, who runs Big Cat Rescue, an organization that actively works to shut down cat parks like Joe’s. But there’s another aspect to Baskin’s life that’s piqued viewers’ interest: What happened to her first husband, Don Lewis, who disappeared in 1987? His disappearance is still an open case in Florida and Baskin has denied any involvement, even though some fan theories posit she killed him and fed him to some of her tigers. Joe also thinks this, according to Tiger King. (For what it’s worth, Baskin called the hit Netflix series “salacious and sensational.”.)

Well, now, a new Investigation Discovery (ID) series, Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic, will attempt to get to the bottom of this mystery. “Love her or hate her, Carole is now in the center ring of the big cat circus,” the network said in a statement, per Entertainment Weekly. “Is she a selfless crusader and protector of animals who found unimaginable strength despite the mysterious disappearance of her husband? Or are we witnessing Carole Baskin’s master plan finally take effect? Despite her claims of innocence, did she orchestrate the disappearance of Don Lewis to seize control of his fortune, consolidate power and lay waste to her foes? No one seems to be talking–except for one man–and that man is the center of ID’s upcoming investigative series.”

ID says its new show highlights “the investigation you didn’t get to see, revealing the secrets only Joe knows and the exclusive footage that has never been shown.” Yep, we’re already totally intrigued—though sadly, no premiere date has been set.

“Viewers are understandably riveted by Netflix’s Tiger King, but the millions of true crime fans around the world were left wanting more,” Henry Schleiff, group president of ID, said. “ID is the perfect place to find the inevitable sequel to this drama–featuring a missing husband, a hitman, and the illegal business of exotic animals. It’s time to let the cat out of the bag and address the lingering questions that viewers demand be answered.”

This isn’t the only bonus Tiger King content that may soon be coming to your TV screens. Dillon Passage, Joe Exotic’s current husband, claims an extra episode of Tiger King may be in the works at Netflix—though the streaming platform hasn’t confirmed this information. According to People, Passage told Andy Cohen on his Sirius radio show, “It’s going to be like a live-based episode I believe, kind of like a reunion.”

We will take any and all Tiger King-adjacent content, thank you very much.

A ‘Gossip Girl’ Reboot Is Officially, Officially Happening


This is not a drill, people: A Gossip Girl reboot is officially happening.

Entertainment Weekly reports the streaming service HBO Max has ordered 10 episodes of a Gossip Girl revival, with the show’s original creative heads, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, on board as executive producers. Josh Safran, who was both a writer and producer on the OG Gossip Girl, will serve as the reboot’s showrunner.

According to EW, it’s not known at this point whether any of the show’s original cast members—including Blake Lively (Serena), Leighton Meester (Blair), and Chace Crawford (Nate)—are returning to the reboot, but most have expressed at least some interest in the idea.

“It sort of all depends,” Lively told Variety in 2017. “Would I do seven years of the show? No, because it’s hard work and I’ve got my babies, and I don’t want to be away from them that much. But I’ve just learned in life you never say never. I’m looking to do something that I haven’t done yet, not something that I did. But would I do that? Who knows—if it was good, if it made sense. We had so much fun shooting and living and working in New York City.”

Meanwhile, Meester told E! News in 2019, “No one’s ever asked me [about a reboot]. No one’s ever talked to me about it except for in interviews, and I always say the same. I never say never. So I don’t know. No one’s sent me that information, it’s coming from you.”

Penn Badgley (Dan) and Ed Westwick (Chuck) are the only actors who seem to not be so keen on the idea. “I suppose you should never say never,” Badgley told Variety in 2018. “I suppose there are conditions where I would. Do I think those conditions will ever exist? No. But they might.” And Westwick told the Radio Times in 2017 that the show is “played out” and “done.”

It’s Finally Happening: Everlane Is Releasing a Sneaker


Whenever Everlane introduces a new shoe style, its fans—which include celebrities like Meghan Markle and Angelina Jolie—are ready. They’ll join wait lists that will already be thousands deep to score a pair of the brand’s ethically made minimal styles. So far, Everlane’s footwear selection has focused on those sophisticated, seasonless silhouettes people don’t swap out every season—the loafer, the boot, the low block heel. One major shoe that went unrepresented, though? The sneaker.

“We’ve known all along that, in many ways, sneakers are the future of footwear,” Alison Melville, Everlane’s general manager of footwear and accessories, tells Glamour. “As apparel and culture [become more casual], footwear is going right along with it. It was less that we were resisting [adding a sneaker] and more that we wanted to take our time and do it right.”

A big concern for the Everlane team was, in a time when everyone has their version of an everyday sneaker, creating something that stood out in the market and could still live in a closet for years. “Striking a balance between those two things is a really big challenge,” she says. “That’s why it took us more than two years.”

The goal was to design something that “had broad appeal across gender, across ages, across all sorts of demographics, while also being recognizable and distinctive.” The result—which is being announced today and released on April 25—is a unisex style called the Trainer. It’ll be available in seven different colors and retail for $98. Aesthetically, it reads like a cooler interpretation of the inescapable “dad sneaker” trend. And though there’s no explicit branding on it, there’s one Everlane hallmark woven into the design: a triangle quarter panel at the top of the shoe.

“We designed it with the recognition that it’s not an athletic shoe,” explains Melville. “Most people wear sneakers for nonathletic reasons, and we wanted to design a sneaker that had that truly versatile end use in mind. We want to produce timeless classics that are basic and that last you a long time, from both a quality and a trend perspective. They’re not splash-in-the-pan fashion items. What we’ve learned across [footwear]—whether it’s the Day Glove or the Day Heel or the Day Boot—is that when you can drill down to the essentialness of a product and deliver on it, you’ll find detailing that sets it apart.”

There was also the environmental impact to consider. As a company, Everlane is committed to reducing waste and to increase transparency in the fashion industry. (Last year it pledged to remove all virgin plastic from its supply chain by 2021.) When it came time to build something that has as many components as a sneaker, the brand wanted to ensure everything from the sole to the laces was aligned with that mission—and also to continue educating customers.

That’s why Everlane’s doing this launch a little differently: Instead of simply adding the Trainer to its existing footwear section, it’s creating a brand-new label, Tread by Everlane. “We wanted to make sure that the sneaker had its own brand platform where we could talk about this message, of reducing the burden of plastic,” says Melville. They’ll also continue talking about carbon offsetting and reducing water usage. “Those conversations are quite nuanced, in terms of sustainability,” she adds. The new label will “make sure that we have the platform to tell the whole story.”

With Tread by Everlane, the brand is hoping to work toward creating “the world’s lowest-impact sneakers.” Melville is tight-lipped about what other styles might be coming but assures that the team is “focused on the Trainer for the foreseeable future.”

The Kissing Booth Sequel Is Happening: Here's Everything We Know


Last year, Netflix blessed us all by bringing back the rom com. (Not that it was ever truly gone for us real stans, but at least they’re cool again.) The streaming service did this by premiering a slew of instant classics, including Set It Up, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. But there was one film in particular that kicked off this rom-com renaissance: The Kissing Booth, which became the most rewatched movie on all of Netflix for 2018, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For the uninitiated, The Kissing Booth is based on Beth Reekles’s YA novel of the same name. It follows Elle Evans (Joey King) and her BFF Lee (Joey Courtney) during their junior year of high school. These two do everything together—from Dance Dance Revolution, to stuffing themselves with cheeseburgers—but there’s one thing they can’t bond over: Elle’s secret, massive crush on Lee’s older brother, Noah (Jacob Elordi).

And for those of you who couldn’t get enough of Elle, Lee, and Noah’s story, Netflix just announced a Valentine’s Day miracle: Production has started on a sequel for The Kissing Booth.

The director: Vince Marcello, who led the first film, is back onboard to direct the second.

The cast: Joey King, Joel Courtney, and Jacob Elordi are attached to star in the sequel. King had previously told TV Guide, “Right now, we’re not really sure. [The cast] would love for that to happen, but everything is still up in the air. We’re still waiting on [Netflix],” so it doesn’t come as that much of a surprise they signed on for the second film.

The plot: Details for the plot are still under warps, but King shared her dream premise for the sequel. “If there was a sequel, my prediction would be hopefully Elle and Noah stay together,” she told Seventeen. “Elle goes to visit Noah at college. Of course, there has to be some crazy things that get out of hand, but I don’t know. I really hope that a lot of the original characters, if there was a sequel, like the OMG Girls and Tuppen and all those amazing characters would definitely be in it.”

As for the fate of Elle and Noah’s relationship, King said, “Of course, I think everyone, including myself, wants to see Elle and Noah stay together. I feel like Elle and Noah should stay together and get into the theme park business together and be a power couple who builds theme parks.”

Oscars 2019: A Breakdown of All the Controversies Happening This Year


The movies nominated for this year’s Oscars run the gamut in terms of style, genre, and racial diversity. Unfortunately, though, a few of those films have some controversies attached. In fact, so much of what’s happened around the 2019 Oscars has been shrouded in scandal—including the debate about who should host.

It’s unclear if these issues will affect how the Academy members vote, but viewers certainly shouldn’t ignore them. Below, we’ve broken down each of the pressing, real-life stories to come out in light of the 2019 Academy Awards. Of course, we’ll update as more information surfaces, but this list should help you decide what to watch—and who to root for come Oscar night.

Shortly after Kevin Hart was announced as the host of this year’s Oscars, people unearthed homophobic tweets he posted between 2009 and 2011. As a result, he backed out of the gig. “I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars,” Hart announced on Twitter in December. “This is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.” Though Hart issued several more apologies—most notably on The Ellen DeGeneres Show—the Oscars ultimately decided to move forward with no host for this year’s ceremony.

Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Actor (Viggo Mortensen), Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing

This comedy-drama, based on true events, follows queer, black classical musician Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and his Italian-American driver (Viggo Mortensen) as they traverse through the 1960s Jim Crow South. The film has enjoyed critical acclaim and success at both the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards despite its mounting controversies. In December, Shirley’s family came forward and said Green Book was a “a symphony of lies”—a claim its director, Peter Farrelly, defended by telling Vanity Fair, “I believe in this movie. I think it can change people’s hearts and minds, incrementally.”

Farrelly’s own behavior came under fire when The Cut unearthed a 1998 Newsweek article that outlined how he used to “trick” people into looking at his penis. “I was an idiot,” Farrelly said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “I did this decades ago, and I thought I was being funny, and the truth is I’m embarrassed, and it makes me cringe now. I’m deeply sorry.”

Also at the center of controversy is Green Book‘s co-writer Nick Vallelonga, whose anti-Muslim tweets from November 2015 resurfaced after the film started picking up steam. We won’t republish the tweets here, but Vallelonga did issue an apology, saying, “I want to apologize. I spent my life trying to bring this story of overcoming differences and finding common ground to the screen, and I am incredibly sorry to everyone associated with Green Book. I especially deeply apologize to the brilliant and kind Mahershala Ali, and all members of the Muslim faith, for the hurt I have caused.”

Viggo Mortensen, who earned a Best Actor nomination for his performance, caught heat for saying the n-word while promoting the film. “For instance, no one says n— anymore,” Mortensen said, in reference to the prevalence of racism in the 1960s. He issued an apology about the incident to The Hollywood Reporter. “In making the point that many people casually used the n-word at the time in which the movie’s story takes place, in 1962, I used the full word. Although my intention was to speak strongly against racism, I have no right to even imagine the hurt that is caused by hearing that word in any context, especially from a white man. I do not use the word in private or in public. I am very sorry that I did use the full word last night, and will not utter it again,” he said.
