Oscars 2019: A Breakdown of All the Controversies Happening This Year

The movies nominated for this year’s Oscars run the gamut in terms of style, genre, and racial diversity. Unfortunately, though, a few of those films have some controversies attached. In fact, so much of what’s happened around the 2019 Oscars has been shrouded in scandal—including the debate about who should host.

It’s unclear if these issues will affect how the Academy members vote, but viewers certainly shouldn’t ignore them. Below, we’ve broken down each of the pressing, real-life stories to come out in light of the 2019 Academy Awards. Of course, we’ll update as more information surfaces, but this list should help you decide what to watch—and who to root for come Oscar night.

Shortly after Kevin Hart was announced as the host of this year’s Oscars, people unearthed homophobic tweets he posted between 2009 and 2011. As a result, he backed out of the gig. “I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars,” Hart announced on Twitter in December. “This is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.” Though Hart issued several more apologies—most notably on The Ellen DeGeneres Show—the Oscars ultimately decided to move forward with no host for this year’s ceremony.

Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Actor (Viggo Mortensen), Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing

This comedy-drama, based on true events, follows queer, black classical musician Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and his Italian-American driver (Viggo Mortensen) as they traverse through the 1960s Jim Crow South. The film has enjoyed critical acclaim and success at both the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards despite its mounting controversies. In December, Shirley’s family came forward and said Green Book was a “a symphony of lies”—a claim its director, Peter Farrelly, defended by telling Vanity Fair, “I believe in this movie. I think it can change people’s hearts and minds, incrementally.”

Farrelly’s own behavior came under fire when The Cut unearthed a 1998 Newsweek article that outlined how he used to “trick” people into looking at his penis. “I was an idiot,” Farrelly said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “I did this decades ago, and I thought I was being funny, and the truth is I’m embarrassed, and it makes me cringe now. I’m deeply sorry.”

Also at the center of controversy is Green Book‘s co-writer Nick Vallelonga, whose anti-Muslim tweets from November 2015 resurfaced after the film started picking up steam. We won’t republish the tweets here, but Vallelonga did issue an apology, saying, “I want to apologize. I spent my life trying to bring this story of overcoming differences and finding common ground to the screen, and I am incredibly sorry to everyone associated with Green Book. I especially deeply apologize to the brilliant and kind Mahershala Ali, and all members of the Muslim faith, for the hurt I have caused.”

Viggo Mortensen, who earned a Best Actor nomination for his performance, caught heat for saying the n-word while promoting the film. “For instance, no one says n— anymore,” Mortensen said, in reference to the prevalence of racism in the 1960s. He issued an apology about the incident to The Hollywood Reporter. “In making the point that many people casually used the n-word at the time in which the movie’s story takes place, in 1962, I used the full word. Although my intention was to speak strongly against racism, I have no right to even imagine the hurt that is caused by hearing that word in any context, especially from a white man. I do not use the word in private or in public. I am very sorry that I did use the full word last night, and will not utter it again,” he said.

A Full Breakdown of Bella Hadid and The Weeknd's Maybe-Probably-Who-Knows Reconciliation

Are you wearing your dirty-but-still-fresh sneakers? Well, you’ll need them to stay comfortable through this very long saga I’m about to break down: Are Bella Hadid and The Weeknd back together? (I ask the hard questions around these parts.)

OK, so “very long saga” might be an exaggeration. News that Hadid and the King of Melancholy are rekindling their flame first popped up in April, during music’s most sacred ritual: Coachella. Yes, it was under the sea of flower crowns and Beyoncé tears where The Weeknd and Hadid supposedly laid eyes on each other following his breakup with Selena Gomez. People magazine specifically reported the two celebrities were “all over each other,” “sitting in each other’s laps,” and “definitely looked like they were fully back together,” which means this probably—Maybe? Who knows?—happened.

According to Hadid, however, this story was faker than the time I told my doctor I was “really into” quinoa. The supermodel took to Instagram and shut down the accusation with two simple emojis. Commenting on E! News’ report of the gossip, Hadid said, “It wasn’t me,” alongside shrug and detective icons. Shucks!

But wait, there’s more! This is where the story gets bonkers. Not even a month after Hadid was like, “Ugh, tabloids,” photos of herself and The Weeknd making out in Cannes hit the Internet. Sure, the pics are blurry, but I’m fairly confident the woman in them is Hadid—just like I’m fairly confident Dua Lipa and Dula Peep are the same person.

See the pics here.

Both of these instances bring us to the freshly-made, piping-hot tea that supposedly went down this past weekend in Paris of all places. Paris! Whose love story actually unfolds in Paris besides Carrie Bradshaw? Answer: The Weeknd and Hadid’s, apparently.

An Eagle-eyed fan caught the pair seemingly having lunch together in the city. Check out how Blurry Bella Hadid is staring at Blurry The Weeknd. That’s a look I typically reserve for when friends gloriously cancel plans at the last minute.

The real evidence that Hadid and The Weeknd are back on, though, is a little more involved. Look at the nails of the woman holding this sugar packet from The Weeknd’s recent Instagram Story.

Are they or are they not the same nails Hadid has in this pic (uploaded right around the same time as The Weeknd’s Instagram)? Coincidence, or Resurrected. Celebrity. Romance?

If you need any more proof, read this People magazine report from Monday (June 4) that claims Hadid and The Weeknd went on a “romantic stroll” in Paris and he put his arm around her. There’s even a photo that seems to confirm this. The story also says The Weeknd purchased some individually-wrapped roses on his trip, and guess what Hadid uploaded to Instagram a few days ago? I don’t even have to tell you.

Those roses smell and look like the truth to me. Kidding. Honestly, we won’t know for sure if Hadid and The Weeknd are back on until they say something. As we wait for that day, though, catch the entire Internet acting like this:

As Hadid and The Weeknd are looking like this:

Sounds about right.

A Complete Breakdown of the Garrett Yrigoyen Controversy on 'The Bachelorette'

Garrett Yrigoyen was one of Becca Kufrin’s favorite suitors on her first night as the Bachelorette—so much so that she gave him the coveted first impression rose. But Bachelor Nation’s impression of Yrigoyen quickly wilted when reports surfaced he has a history of liking bigoted memes on Instagram. What followed in the days after this story came out was dramatic, even by Bachelorette standards.

If you’re just now catching up on this controversy, don’t worry: We broke it down, below, so you’ll know exactly what your Bach friends are talking about.

May 24: Former Bachelor contestant Ashley Spivey posts a series of tweets claiming Yrigoyen “liked” several Instagram posts that made offensive jokes about boys who wear makeup, Caitlyn Jenner’s transition, and the Parkland shooting survivors, among other topics.

“Can we do a better job of social media deep dives on the dudes that try out for #thebachelorette – FYI douchebags we can see your likes [sic]…After Lee’s problematic @$$, [sic] I truly thought this would be something we paid better attention to,” Spivey tweeted, referring to Bachelorette season 13’s Lee Garrett, whose racist tweets were discovered after his appearance on the show. “A contestant on this season of #thebachelorette liked all of these posts on Instagram and I’m thinking it will be very hard to pull for the type of person likes [sic] any of this.”

Check out her tweets—and Yrigoyen’s alleged “likes”—below:

Neither Kufrin nor Yrigoyen immediately responded to the tweets, and ABC told Glamour they had no comment. However, the silence was short-lived.

May 30: Kufrin gives an interview to E! News about Yrigoyen. “I’ve heard a little bit about it these past couple days,” she said. “I’ve just been so busy traveling around the country with press that I haven’t really been able to read too much up on it, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and at the end of the day I wanted to go on this journey to open up myself and have people see my love story unfold, and I would hope that they would stay open and respect me but also stay open and respect these 28 guys that went along on the journey with me.”

She expanded on the subject in a second interview with ON with Mario Lopez, according to People. “I met 28 guys who our ideals weren’t always the same,” she said. “They have different interests. They have different hobbies, different things that they believe, and that’s what’s been so great about getting to know these guys, because everyone has different viewpoints and that’s what I loved about this journey…I just want everyone to watch it back and to get to know these guys and to get to know me for who we really are and not social media, because that’s just a small glimpse into a person and it’s not always reflective of who they are.”

May 31: Late Thursday night, Yrigoyen took to his new Instagram account—he deleted his old one with the offensive “likes” attached—to confirm this activity was true and that he deeply regrets it. Below, read his full response:

To those who I have hurt and offended: This is all new to me. I wenton the Bachelorette for the adventure and possibility of falling inlove, not fame. “I did not know what to expect once the show aired. Iam sorry to those who I offended, and I also take full responsibilityfor my ‘likes’ on Instagram that were hurtful and offensive,” hecontinued. “garret_yrigs12 was my former Instagram handle and Idecided to take it down and start fresh because I have learned anextremely valuable lesson and am taking steps to grow, become moreeducated, and be a better version of myself. I am not perfect, and Iwill never be anywhere close, but now I will always be more informedand aware of what I am liking and supporting, not just on Instagram, but in life. I never realized the power behind a mindless double tapon Instagram and how it bears so much weight on people’s lives. I didnot mean any harm by any of it. My Instagram ‘likes’ were not a truereflection of me and my morals. I am not the negative labels peopleare associating me with. For those who do know me, I am a sincere, genuine, loving, light-hearted, open-minded and non-judgementalindividual. I like to make new friends with anyone I meet and wanteveryone to find their happiness. I love to laugh often and enjoyseeing others do the same. I hope that some day you can get to knowthe real me and the man that I am. Let my mistakes be a lesson forthose who mindlessly double tap images, memes. and videos on anysocial media content that could be many things including hurtful, degrading, and dehumanizing. I do not want my social media to definewho I am, and I will take better care moving forward to support allwalks of life. Again, I sincerely apologize and am sorry for any hurt, damage, or offense I may have caused.”

And so ends this drama—for now. Let’s see how the rest of The Bachelorette unfolds this season.

A Breakdown of the Kim-Kanye-Trump Drama Happening on Twitter Right Now

Kim Kardashian just posted a super-lengthy Twitter thread defending one of Kanye West’s pro-Donald Trump tweets. What, did you expect for nothing to happen today? It’s Wednesday!

Anyway, here’s what happened. West posted a photo to Twitter on Wednesday (April 25) of one of the hallways in the West home and captioned it, “Do this look like the Sunken Place,” referring to the horror film Get Out. For the record, no, the hallway doesn’t look like the Sunken Place, but it does look like an updated version of where those dead girls play in The Shining.

That’s besides the point, though. What matters is Kardashian then replied, jokingly asking if they can now include their home on Keeping Up With the Kardashians since West broke their apparent rule about not posting pics of it on social media. It was a harmless and silly message that should’ve received no attention.

Of course that didn’t happen. These are the Kardashians, not Bobby from Queer Eye or some other person who doesn’t get the shine they deserve. News outlets ran with this story like the one time I ran a mile in high school. The Daily Mail posted a tweet that read, “Kim Kardashian scolds Kanye West on Twitter after he shares pictures of family home amid another bizarre tirade.” It’s important to note that the day before this, West also posted some business updates about Yeezy that people were quick to deem erratic.

All this began the transition from Kim Kardashian’s Funny Tweets to Kim Kardashian’s Serious Tweets.

“Oh RELAX I’m joking! Seriously you can’t have a personality on social media these days or your called bizarre or disturbing,” Kardashian wrote in response to The Daily Mail‘s headline.

That was the end of it—for an hour. Then, West took a page out of the Shania Twain book and said something positive about President Donald Trump. “You don’t have to agree with trump but the mob can’t make me not love him,” West wrote. “We are both dragon energy. He is my brother. I love everyone. I don’t agree with everything anyone does. That’s what makes us individuals. And we have the right to independent thought.”

I’m not even going to try and understand what West meant by this. The fact of the matter is this ticked people off—and they grew even more irate when he started saying more Trump-happy stuff.

“If your friend jumps off the bridge you don’t have to do the same,” he tweeted. “Ye being Ye is a fight for you to be you. For people In my life the idea of Trump is pretty much a 50 50 split but I don’t tell a Hillary supporter not to support Hillary
I love Hillary too…I love when people have their own ideas. You don’t have to be allowed anymore. Just be. Love who you want to love. That’s free thought. I’m not even political. I’m not a democrat or a republican.”

At this point, Kardashian apparently called West and told him to clarify his tweets. (I need to hear that convo ASAP.) “My wife just called me and she wanted me to make this clear to everyone. I don’t agree with everything Trump does. I don’t agree 100% with anyone but myself,” West tweeted.

This really didn’t help things, though, seeing as how minutes later West started posting pics of himself wearing a “Make America Great Again Hat”…

Trump even responded to West’s original tweet, writing, “Thank you Kanye, very cool!” Wow. This is even more dramatic than the time Kardashian lost her diamond earrings in the ocean.

Later, West shared Trump’s tweet that praised him because of course he did. My God.

Finally, this is where Kardashian jumped in. She posted a long thread in defense of West— saying that while she may not agree with all his politics, she supports his right to say what he wants. She then condemned tabloids for haphazardly saying West has mental health problems, which, fair. Here’s what she said, in full:

“To the media trying to demonize my husband let me just say this… your commentary on Kanye being erratic & his tweets being disturbing is actually scary. So quick to label him as having mental health issues for just being himself when he has always been expressive is not fair. Yesterday it was announced that Kanye had parted ways with some business people and media outlets made this about Kanye’s mental health. Rather than just a simple business decision. So I’m glad he tweeted about the state of his company and all of the exciting things happening. He’s a free thinker, is that not allowed in America? Because some of his ideas differ from yours you have to throw in the mental health card? That’s just not fair.

He’s actually out of the sunken place when he’s being himself which is very expressive. Now when he spoke out about Trump… Most people (including myself) have very different feelings & opinions about this. But this is HIS opinion. I believe in people being able to have their own opinions, even if really different from mine. He never said he agrees with his politics. Kanye will never run in the race of popular opinion and we know that and that’s why I love him and respect him and in a few years when someone else says the same exact thing but they aren’t labeled the way he is and you will all praise them! Kanye is years ahead of his time. Mental Health is no joke and the media needs to stop spitting that out so casually. Bottom line.”

Annnnnd end scene. Honestly, I can’t wait to see how this all unfolds on Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
