The Women's Convention is Happening, and Honestly It's Just What I Need

Are you tired, like fully mentally spent? Because we sure are.

Every day of 2017 has been a slog, but as women, the past few weeks have felt especially draining. While it’s been incredible to hear women speaking out and opening up about sexual harassment and abuse in a way that may actually be shifting the culture, it’s also really, really hard. It has brought each of our personal experiences to the surface and that can wear you down.

I’ve certainly had moments where it all just feels like too much, that the current climate feels so stacked against us. Can we really change it? Conversations with girlfriends have shown me that I’m not alone in feeling that way and have also served to help build me back up when I’m at my lowest. Because that’s often what we do for each other as women, isn’t it?

So this morning, after another week of harassment scandals and generally terrible news, I begrudgingly opened up Twitter ready for another day’s battle. But then something happened, the #WomensConvention started and the hashtag started filling up my feed. There it was, that solidarity and inspiration that comes from women banding together and raising our voices. The event—organized by the activists behind the Women’s March—kicked off this morning in Detroit. Reading through the tweets from attendees’ and quotes from early speakers gave me an instant mood lift.

Virtual attendance is highly recommended. We should all be #ReclaimingOurTime this fine Friday! (And as always when it comes to Twitter: Ignore the trolls, especially the angry MRA dudes.)

Mantra.

Stronger Together.

A woman’s place is in the resistance.

We must be in the room where it happens.

YES!

No, we’re not crying. You’re crying!

17 Can't-Miss TV Shows and Movies Happening This Week

You’ve been waiting five months, but it’s finally here: The return of Riverdale. Yes, everyone’s low-key (but should be high-key) favorite TV show is back October 11, and things are looking scary…but also steamy. Um, that Archie-Veronica shower scene, anyone?

Actually, a slew of The CW’s hit shows return this week, including Supergirl, Jane the Virgin, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. If you’re not a fan of these, though, there’s still plenty of good TV premiering to help you avoid social interaction. Mr. Robot is back, along with Madam Secretary and the BET Hip Hop Awards. Plus, the Dynasty reboot premieres Wednesday, and that bonkers-looking Netflix drama about serial killers (Mindhunters) hits your queue on Friday. And there are still nine TV shows and movies I haven’t even mentioned yet!

Here are all the premieres you can’t miss this week:

Sunday, October 8

Madam Secretary: The fourth season of Téa Leoni’s gripping political drama kicks off tonight. It’ll be interesting to see what Donald Trump shade, if any, makes it into this next chapter. 10 P.M. EST on CBS

The Collection: A period drama about fashion set in post-war Paris? Sign us up. Expect loads of opulent gowns. 10 P.M. EST on PBS

Monday, October 9

Valor: Valor stands out from the slew of military dramas on television because of its central female character, Nora (Christina Ochoa), who must help her platoon save two soldiers from a hostage situation. 9 P.M. EST on The CW

Supergirl: Mon-El’s pod is now in a wormhole; Rhea is dead; and Alex popped the question to Maggie. There’s a lot of drama going into this season-three premiere; we’re excited to see how it unfolds. 8 P.M. EST on The CW

Tuesday, October 10

BET Hip Hop Awards: Kendrick Lamar, DJ Khaled, and Cardi B lead the nominations for this awards show, which celebrates hip-hop’s best and brightest stars. 8 P.M. EST on BET

The Flash: With an energy storm rising and Barry (and Grant Gustin’s abs) out of the picture, tune in to see how Central City will get by without their scarlet speedster. 8 P.M. EST on The CW

Wednesday, October 11

Dynasty: Reboot culture is in full swing with Dynasty, which explores the tense dynamic between a rich twenty-something and her potentially gold-digging stepmom-to-be. Expect lots of cattiness and camp—but here’s hoping it’s not too reductive. 9 P.M. EST on The CW

Mr. Robot: Mobley and Trenton may have found a way to reverse some effects of the 5/9 hack—but with Dom getting closer to connecting the dots, Elliot bleeding out from his gunshot wound, and Tyrell back on the scene after a season in the shadows, the stakes have never been higher. 10 P.M. EST on USA

Riverdale: It’s back! The CW’s breakout hit from last fall returns for season two, and there’s a lot on the line. Is Archie’s father dead? Will Jughead’s move to the South Side affect his relationship with Betty? Will Cheryl Blossom receive the screen time and shine she deserves? TBH, that last question is the only one I care about. 8 P.M. EST on The CW

Thursday, October 12

I Love You, America: Sarah Silverman’s new variety show finds the comedian getting to the root of America’s issues via a series of field interviews with people across the country. Expect humor and, let’s be honest, awkwardness. Available on Hulu

Arrow: The sixth season of arguably the best piece of entertainment in the “Arrowverse” premieres tonight. Stephen Amell’s jawline, as always, takes center stage. 9 P.M. EST on The CW

Friday, October 13

On the Record: P!nk — Beautiful Trauma: P!nk talks motherhood, her career, and the future in this refreshingly candid music documentary, which is named after her next album. Available on Apple Music

The Babysitter: Growing up, did you ever wonder what your babysitter did after you fell asleep? This movie gives you the answer, and it’s terrifying. Tune in to watch Bella Thorne play a cheerleader who worships the devil. Available on Netflix

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: A quick recap of what happened last season: Rebecca’s father crashed her wedding, Josh had a crazy epiphany about Rebecca, and Rebecca and Paula are starting a new business venture. Stay home next Friday to find out what happens next. 8 P.M. EST on The CW

Mindhunter: Jonathan Groff gets into the minds of deranged serial killers in Netflix’s next addictive series. Just go ahead and cancel all your plans for this one. Available on Netflix

Jane the Virgin: Jane Gloriana Villanueva, we’ve missed you—but it’s time to figure out that Rafael situation once and for all. 9 P.M. EST on The CW

Happy Death Day: This hilarious horror film centers on a college girl who keeps getting killed and has to repeat the same day over and over. In order to break the déjà vu, she has to kill the assailant before he murders her. In theaters

Saturday, October 14

Tokyo Project: Lena Dunham executive-produced this short film, starring Elisabeth Moss, about two strangers who have a passionate affair in Tokyo. 10 P.M. EST on HBO

An All-Female 'Lord of the Flies' Remake Is Happening, and the Internet Isn't Here for It

PHOTO: Columbia Pictures/Everett Collection

This week, it was announced that Warner Brothers would be remaking Lord of the Flies with an all-female cast, but written and directed by two men. And guess what? The Internet isn’t really down for it.

The story choice in particular is what is drawing much criticism, as Lord of the Flies is about a shipwrecked group of young boys whose social hierarchy quickly devolves into chaos and warfare. Because, as writer Roxane Gay wrote, “an all women remake of Lord of the Flies makes no sense because… the plot of that book wouldn’t happen with all women.” Screenwriter Gennifer Hutchinson also weighed in, saying, “A. This is a story about toxic masculinity specifically, so this seems tricky. B. I hope they have some women on the creative end.”

Which brings up another point of contention: the idea that there’s “such little interest in seeking out original stories about girlhood by women that you remake LORD OF THE FLIES with girls,” as SuperDeluxe’s Alex Alvarez tweeted.

The “goal in championing stories about/by women is TO HAVE NEW STORIES, new & different themes, characters, experiences represented in culture,” they continued. “It doesn’t mean replacing stories significantly ABOUT masculinity, about societal expectations 4 young men, male bonding, masculine toxicity.”

An Aaliyah MAC Collection Is Happening By Popular Demand

MAC fans probably remember where they were last September when the news broke that, thanks to a change.org petition, the brand would be releasing a collection around music icon Selena Quintanilla. Not to throw around the phrase “broke the Internet,” but it legit broke the Internet—the combination of MAC lovers and Selena fans was no joke, and the collection sold out literally in minutes. Basking in the success of the brand responding to what people want, fans then asked for the next dream collab: an Aaliyah x MAC collection in honor of the legendary late singer. Flash forward one year later, and the Internet’s power for turning fantasy into reality knows no bounds: that Aaliyah collection is actually happening.

Announced today, MAC told fans to stay tuned in 2018 for #AaliyahforMAC, which launches next summer. Those are literally the only details available, other than the tagline that, “Aaliyah is truly one in a million — an unstoppable icon whose groundbreaking work in R&B music and film inspires us all. Today we join her countless fans in celebrating her with the announcement of the M·A·C Aaliyah collection. You made it happen!” There’s no putting a number on the amount of people who have been influenced by her music, but heading over to change.org gives a little clarity: 26,187 supporters (and counting) have signed the petition.

According to the petition creator—one Jennifer Risinger, hero—both Missy Elliott and Rashad Haughton, Aaliyah’s brother, have condoned the ask. Haughton says Aaliyah was a big fan of MAC, and her go-to products were Cherish lipstick, Chestnut lipliner, and Espresso eyeshadow, alongside the since-discontinued Chelsea lipstick and Biscuit eyeshadow (side note, props that Haughton held on to that knowledge).

Speaking to what fans want to see, Risinger writes that they’re hoping for eyeshadows, lipsticks, lip liners, lip glosses, contour and highlight powder, face powder, false lashes, and eyebrow pencils that represent and are inspired by Aaliyah. In the petition, she wrote: “Aaliyah stands for MAC’s mission of ‘All ages, All races, All sexes.’ She was a risk taker, innovator, edgy, street but sweet, and R & B’s princess. She continues to influence today’s mainstream artists and people around the world still love and celebrate her life and music every year.”

PHOTO: Blackground Records and Atlantic Records

Fans went full picture on what their fantasy Aaliyah collection would look like, asking for the packaging to draw on the iconic blue-toned print on the cover of her album “One in a Million.” The album’s 20th anniversary is this year, and given the rabid turnout MAC’s Selena collection received, it’s a safe bet to guess that the reception is going to be insane. So long as there’s a shade called “Rock the Boat.” We demand it.
