Viola Davis Is Officially Starring as Michelle Obama in New Showtime Series, 'First Ladies'

Showtime has officially ordered First Ladies to series, marking Michelle Obama as Academy Award winner Viola Davis‘ first television role since her tenure as Annalise Keating on How to Get Away With Murder, wrapping this May.

According to a statement from Showtime, the new anthology series will follow the “personal and political lives” of the nation’s first ladies, with the first season focussed on Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, and Michelle Obama. Roosevelt and Ford have yet to be cast. “First Ladies is set in the East Wing of the White House, where many of history’s most impactful and world-changing decisions have been hidden from view, made by America’s charismatic, complex and dynamic first ladies,” the statement revealed.

The one-hour drama was originally put in development by Showtime last August with a three-script commitment. The announcement of a full series pickup came on February 5.

“Throughout our history, presidents’ spouses have wielded remarkable influence, not only on the nation’s leaders but on the country itself.” said Jane Winograde, the President of Entertainment at Showtime Networks Inc. “Having Viola Davis play Michelle Obama is a dream come true, and we couldn’t be luckier to have her extraordinary talent to help launch this series.”

Aside from portraying Obama, who served as First Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017, Davis will be an executive producer of the project. The actress holds five Emmy nominations and took home one win as well as a Golden Globe and SAG Award for her portrayal as a ruthless, hardened defense lawyer on HTGAWM. Oh, and don’t forget her Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress for Fences, the film adaptation of the play that won the actress a Tony back in 2010.

Hopefully, this political drama can soothe the ache left in the wake of HTGAWM as well as the Showtime staple Shameless, in its 11th and final season this year.

Glossier Is Officially Coming to Nordstrom

Glossier, beloved brand of millennials and the internet, is going offline for its latest venture.

The beauty company just announced it will be opening seven temporary pop-ups at select Nordstrom locations around the country, including the newest flagship store in New York City, according to CNBC, to promote the brand’s popular Glossier You fragrance—a category that’s notoriously difficult to sell online.

“Fragrance is an extremely personal category—one that people understandably prefer to discover in person—and department stores are the largest channel for fragrance, making up nearly a quarter of all U.S. fragrance sales,” Glossier founder and CEO Emily Weiss told CNBC. “We feel confident that with Nordstrom as our partner, we’ll be able to maintain our extremely high bar for customer experience.” She said her team was also very involved in hiring and training the staff for the pop-ups, so that should be helpful in maintaining the vibe that Glossier fans love.

It won’t be selling its famed dewy skin care or “is she wearing makeup?” makeup at Nordstrom—yet, at least. Although the brand has opened brick-and-mortar locations since its launch. Currently Glossier has two permanent stores in Los Angeles and New York and have operated pop-ups in other cities like London, Miami, and Austin. The Nordstrom fragrance pop-ups will be open from December 3 through February 16 in Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., and Santa Anita, California, in addition to NYC.

The reactions on social media have been somewhat mixed, but generally positive. “As a former Nordstrom employee (lingerie ?), this partnership to bring Glossier You, our cult-favorite perfume, to seven Nordstrom stores feels poetic. (One of them is the Seattle store where I worked.),” one person tweeted. “I read that glossier finally caved and will be partnering with a major retailer (nordstrom) and i was like ?????? then i realized its for their new fragrance Glossier You,” another wrote.

Who knows if this Nordstrom partnership will lead to future offline ventures for Glossier, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it did.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Officially Announces Impeachment Proceedings

Following Democrats’ growing calls to impeach President Donald Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced official proceedings on Tuesday afternoon. “The president must be held accountable. No one is above the law,” Pelosi said in her video address.

Talk of impeachment has followed Trump for months, and Pelosi had previously said that Democrats needed to have the best possible case before launching an impeachment inquiry. However, Trump’s latest scandal involving a call to the Ukraine seems to have been the final straw. The controversy came to light after a whistleblower reportedly filed a complaint over an exchange Trump had with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump is accused of pressing Zelensky to dig up damaging information about his potential 2020 political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden while Ukraine awaits millions of dollars in funds from the U.S.

Pelosi suggested that a major development was afoot in conversation with Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg during the Atlantic Festival earlier on Tuesday. “As soon as we have the facts, we’re ready. Now we have the facts. We’re ready,” she said, according to the Guardian.

Just as the announcement of potential impeachment proceedings came, the New York Times released a report saying that Trump had agreed to release transcripts of the call, which he has referred to as “totally appropriate.” On Twitter, he dismissed the controversy as a witch hunt, writing, “You will see it was a very friendly and totally appropriate call. No pressure and, unlike Joe Biden and his son, NO quid pro quo! This is nothing more than a continuation of the Greatest and most Destructive Witch Hunt of all time!”

But Democrats continued urging an investigation—and were able to move the House Speaker. Candidates like Bernie Sanders tweeted, “Donald Trump is the most corrupt president in the modern history of this country. Enough is enough. I hope the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House will begin the impeachment process.” Elizabeth Warren wrote, “I called for impeachment five months ago, the day after the Mueller report came out. Trump continues to commit crimes because he believes he’s above the law. If Congress does nothing to respond, he’ll be right. We must begin impeachment proceedings—now.”

Hilary Duff Is Officially Coming Back as Lizzie McGuire in a New TV Series

Maybe we should have seen it coming, when, back in late June, Hilary Duff said her new haircut was inspired by her iconic Lizzie McGuire character on the eponymous Disney TV show. But we’re here for the news that broke on Friday, August 23: Duff is officially reprising her role in a new show for Disney+, the company’s streaming service set to launch later this year.

The rebooted Lizzie McGuire will center on her life as she turns 30 in New York City. She’s living in Brooklyn, working as an apprentice to an interior designer and has a boyfriend who’s a SoHo restauranteur—basically living her millennial dream life.

“The good news is, just like me and everybody who loved Lizzie and has grown up with her, Lizzie’s also grown up,” Duff said on stage during the announcement in Anaheim. “She’s older, she’s wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget, which is super exciting. She has her dream job. She has kind of the perfect life right now.”

Although Duff teased a reboot back in December, this is the first development we’ve heard since. And although filming hasn’t started yet, rest assured that the series is under development.

“The conversations have gone on for a couple of years and the timing just didn’t seem right and now Lizzie is turning 30,” Duff told People on Friday. “For me, she was everybody’s best friend and she was there for us … entering your 30s is a really big deal.”

“I think it’s the right time to set back in and have her go along with you in your 30s and all the fun times, and all of the big monumental moments, and all of the challenges that you’re faced with,” she continued. “I just thought that there was an opportunity there for her to be grown up and for her to be there for women again.”

Duff posted the news to Instagram Friday night. “SURPRISE!!! I’ve been trying to contain this excitement for a loooong time while this has been in the works! I am beyond excited to be home again, back with my girl ♥️…and into her 30’s,” she wrote in the caption.

Needless to say, fans are stoked:

Duff also opened up to People how she really feels about returning to the character after all these years. “I’m not gonna lie: I’m a little intimidated,” she said. “I’m like, ‘Where is she in there?’ She is in there; she is me. When I was 13, it was such a big part of me… I just have to tap into that and be very authentic to that.”

A ‘Gossip Girl’ Reboot Is Officially, Officially Happening

This is not a drill, people: A Gossip Girl reboot is officially happening.

Entertainment Weekly reports the streaming service HBO Max has ordered 10 episodes of a Gossip Girl revival, with the show’s original creative heads, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, on board as executive producers. Josh Safran, who was both a writer and producer on the OG Gossip Girl, will serve as the reboot’s showrunner.

According to EW, it’s not known at this point whether any of the show’s original cast members—including Blake Lively (Serena), Leighton Meester (Blair), and Chace Crawford (Nate)—are returning to the reboot, but most have expressed at least some interest in the idea.

“It sort of all depends,” Lively told Variety in 2017. “Would I do seven years of the show? No, because it’s hard work and I’ve got my babies, and I don’t want to be away from them that much. But I’ve just learned in life you never say never. I’m looking to do something that I haven’t done yet, not something that I did. But would I do that? Who knows—if it was good, if it made sense. We had so much fun shooting and living and working in New York City.”

Meanwhile, Meester told E! News in 2019, “No one’s ever asked me [about a reboot]. No one’s ever talked to me about it except for in interviews, and I always say the same. I never say never. So I don’t know. No one’s sent me that information, it’s coming from you.”

Penn Badgley (Dan) and Ed Westwick (Chuck) are the only actors who seem to not be so keen on the idea. “I suppose you should never say never,” Badgley told Variety in 2018. “I suppose there are conditions where I would. Do I think those conditions will ever exist? No. But they might.” And Westwick told the Radio Times in 2017 that the show is “played out” and “done.”

People on Twitter are, naturally, elated with this news:

Reboot details are sparse at this point, but of course we’ll keep you updated as they roll in.

Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson Just Officially Confirmed They're Dating

People have been semi-certain for a while that Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson are dating, but the two officially confirmed the rumors on Friday night (June 14) via—what else?—an Instagram. They reportedly met on the set of the film Her Smell, which was released in April, and have since been snapped kissing in London. Benson’s also been spotted wearing a necklace with “A” and “C” on it and spent Delevingne’s birthday with her. But despite a comment in September by Benson on a ‘gram of Delevingne’s, which seemed to confirm the two were dating (Benson later said she was hacked), there’s been no official word on their status until now.

The Instagram was posted to Delevingne’s account, and it’s basically them making out. Delevingne captioned the ‘gram: “#PRIDE ?❤️??❤️?” and tagged Benson in it.

Benson left a comment of her own: three hearts, which makes it about as official as possible.

Instagram/@caradelevigne

The couple’s proud Instagram comes in the wake of a homophobic comment left on a ‘gram of Benson’s by a troll in late April. “Ashley I know you are here,” they wrote, according to BuzzFeed. “I’m serious, you need to stay away from that devil and never go back. I’m sure many strong, handsome, religious man [sic] would take you back in a heartbeat. You are not like this. You aren’t gay. You love men, and you need one.”

Benson and Delevingne promptly clapped back, of course: “You need to mind your own business,” Benson wrote, according to Buzzfeed. “Stop making things up.”
