It Sure Looks Like Hilary Duff Just Revealed What Stalled the ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reboot


To say Hilary Duff fans were excited when she announced a Lizzie McGuire reboot on Disney+ would be an extreme understatement.

The singer-actor let fans in on the big news last August during a Disney+ event in California. “The good news is, just like me and everybody who loved Lizzie and has grown up with her, Lizzie’s also grown up,” she said. “She’s older, she’s wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget, which is super exciting. She has her dream job. She has kind of the perfect life right now.”

But in January the show surprisingly shut down production. The show’s original creator, Terri Minsky, stepped down as showrunner, and Disney said via a spokesperson, “Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series. After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the series.”

Hilary Duff herself hasn’t said much about the shutdown—until now. On Tuesday, February 25, she posted a screenshot of a news article to her Instagram Stories about another Disney+ show, Love, Simon (based on the popular 2018 film). It read, “Love, Simon TV Show Pulled from Disney+ as It’s Not ‘Family Friendly.’” She circled the headline and wrote, “Sounds familiar….”

Of course, we can’t know exactly what Duff meant by her statement, but it’s not a huge leap to wonder if perhaps the powers-that-be felt the Lizzie McGuire reboot also wasn’t “family friendly.” We won’t know for sure unless Duff or others involved with the show choose to speak out more explicitly.

Lizzie McGuire originally aired from 2001 to 2004 and followed the life of 13-year-old Lizzie and her best friends Miranda and Gordo as they navigated teenage life. Hopefully everyone can settle their creative differences and the show will get back on track so we can see how all your favorites are navigating their thirties.

Saved by the Bell Reboot: Everything We Know So Far


NBC has decided it’s time to revisit Bayside High. Back in September, the network announced it had plans to reboot Saved By The Bell, its famed sitcom from the early nineties that followed characters like Zack Morris, Kelly Kapowski, A.C. Slater, and Screech through high school (and eventually into college and adult life). The new show will air as part of NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Peacock, which launches in April 2020.

We’re in an era of reboots—from Charmed to Gossip Girl and Lizzie McGuire—so it was only a matter of time before Saved by the Bell got a new version as well. Here’s everything we know about the show so far.

The plot. The show’s official synopsis is, “When California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state—including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality.”

The cast. [The Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/peacocks-saved-by-bell-sequel-finds-lead-josie-totah-1266269) announced on January 6 that the show had cast Josie Totah as its star. Totah, who came out as transgender in 2018, will play Lexi, described by THR as “a beautiful, sharp-tongued cheerleader and the most popular girl at Bayside High who is both admired and feared by her fellow students.”

Totah will be joined by a few of the original cast members, including Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez. Berkley announced she and Lopez signed on to the project back in September 2019.

“I’M SO EXCITED…. here we gooooo!!! @mariolopez…. are you ready for grownup Jessie?!” she wrote on Instagram. “Jessie and Slater are back for more fun. We are thrilled to have Emmy winning 30Rock writer @TraceyWigfield bring the sequel to life on NBC/Universal.” It’s unclear if Mark-Paul Gosselaar will be reprising the role of Zack Morris.

The premiere date. There’s no exact date yet, but Peacock is scheduled to launch this April.

Jennifer Beals Says the 2016 Election Ignited the L Word Reboot


I asked Beals if the press tour she’s on right now differs from that of 10 years ago—as in are she, her co-stars, and Chaiken being well-received by media? Or have they faced challenges? She believes it’s the culture, more broadly, that’s changed. “What’s different is that people are more attuned to these conversations and ready to have these conversations,” she said. “Back then, people didn’t quite even have the vocabulary to have the conversation. You know, when language is changing, when language is trying to keep up with the reality of experience, it’s a tectonic shift in the way we think, and the way we see each other, and the way we see ourselves. So, I think the conversations are different now.”

In Generation Q, Bette Porter is campaigning to be the first out lesbian mayor of Los Angeles—a fitting job for her and a fitting mayor in the cinematic universe of The L Word (and let’s be real, probably IRL too). In the pilot alone, Bette makes a series of inspiring speeches that made me remember just how special and important Ms. Porter was in the aughts, and how important Beals’s voice remains as a bullheaded ally of the LGBTQ+ community. When I asked Jennifer if she misses anything about the original show, she channeled Bette and set me straight.

“I don’t. I try to move forward. I try not to hold on,” she said. “Holding on will just lead you to nostalgia, and we don’t have time for nostalgia. We’re living in a time that requires all of us to be intensely present, because what’s interesting about these conversations about gender and sexual identity is that they also pertain to how we are on the planet, and how we are treating the planet. Both things require us to shift the paradigm, and shift absolute consciousness, and shift entire systems.”

What she said next is truly a mantra I’ll be carrying into 2020: “Holding onto the past? We don’t have time for that. I don’t have time to be nostalgic.”

A Bring It On Reboot Could Happen, If Kirsten Dunst Has Her Way


Bring It On is a modern classic. In 100 glorious minutes, Bring It On told the story of a cheerocracy’s rise, fall, and rise again, and taught us the difference between spirit fingers and jazz hands. Twenty years later, its star, Kirsten Dunst, just said she’s ready to reprise her legendary role as head cheerleader.

During an interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Dunst said she’s down to play cheer captain Torrance again in a Bring It On reboot. “If they wanted to make another movie, I would make another movie,” she said. “It would be so fun!”

Dunst added that the movie was a surprise hit. “We made that movie for no money. Zero money. It was a Universal movie, but one of those ones where they’re like, ‘Go do whatever you want, this little cheerleader movie,'” she recalled. “And then opening week, we were all so surprised.”

Dunst isn’t the only one who’s hinted that they’d like to return to the iconic SoCal cheerleading squad. Peyton Reed, Bring It On‘s director, said he’s toyed with the idea of reprising the Bring It On storyline in a rebooted sequel. “It’s something that we’ve actually talked about—and I’ve talked about it with the actors and [writer] Jessica Bendinger,” Reed told Entertainment Tonight last year. “Could you do like, a 20-year later thing to just pick up where they are now, make it this generational thing? It’s something we’ve kind of talked about over the years but never quite honed in on it.”

And another former cast member has also hinted that she’s got Bring It On on her mind. Gabrielle Union, who played the captain of the Compton Clovers and Dunst’s rival in the original film, recently dressed up her daughter in a replica of her cheer uniform.

It’s not like there haven’t been other cheerleading movies since Bring It On. Five straight-to-video movies under the Bring It On name were released by Universal since the original premiered in 2000. And Outside of the Bring It On franchise, channels like Lifetime are experts in concocting cheerleader dramas to binge.

Everything We Know About the 'Lizzie McGuire' Reboot


Hilary Duff fans were thrilled to learn on Friday (August 23) that the singer/actress would be coming back to the role that made her famous: Lizzie McGuire.

The Disney show of the same name, which ran from 2001 to 2004 (plus a 2003 movie), followed the life of 13-year-old Lizzie and her best friends Miranda (Lalaine) and Gordo (Adam Lamberg) as they navigate all the ups and downs of teenage life. Another “character” was Lizzie’s animated avatar, who monologued her inner thoughts about all that was going on in her world.

There aren’t many details yet, but here’s everything we know.

The cast. Duff is definitely returning—and she’s excited. “The good news is, just like me and everybody who loved Lizzie and has grown up with her, Lizzie’s also grown up,” she said on stage during the announcement about the reboot. “She’s older, she’s wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget, which is super exciting. She has her dream job. She has kind of the perfect life right now.” She revealed the the project has been in the works for a while on her Instagram.

“SURPRISE!!! I’ve been trying to contain this excitement for a loooong time while this has been in the works!” she wrote. “I am beyond excited to be home again, back with my girl ♥️…and into her 30’s.”

The setting. The show will reportedly pick up with Lizzie on the brink of 30, living her millennial best life in NYC. She’s got a place in Brooklyn and a job as an apprentice to an interior designer, and, like the rest of us, she’s just trying to figure it all out.

Lizzie’s relationship status. No updates on any potential history with Gordo, but we do know one thing: Lizzie has a boyfriend in the new series, and he’s a restauranteur who owns a spot in SoHo. Not too shabby.

Why now? “I think it’s the right time to set back in and have her go along with you in your 30s and all the fun times, and all of the big monumental moments, and all of the challenges that you’re faced with,” Duff told People. “I just thought that there was an opportunity there for her to be grown up and for her to be there for women again.”

Wait, what about Younger? Not to fear, Younger fans: Duff is reportedly going to juggle this role and that of Kelsey Peters on her other hit show. It’s unclear at this point if any of the other original Lizzie McGuire cast members will join the reboot.

A ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ Reboot Is Coming


Grab your love ferns, people, because a reboot of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is coming. Yes, according to a new article from the Los Angeles Times, Quibi, a streaming company that develops content exclusively for mobile phones, and Paramount TV are developing an adaptation of the classic Kate Hudson rom-com. Here’s the official description of the reboot, per an email from Quibi: “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days follows a glib young online columnist and an oversexed advertising executive who both need to prove, once and for all, they’re capable of being monogamous. They soon discover, however, keeping a relationship is harder than Andie Anderson made it look!”

Confusion around the phrase “oversexed advertising executive” aside, I’m deliriously excited about this project. Guy Branum, who worked heavily behind the scenes on The Mindy Project, has been tapped to write, so you know it’s in good hands. There’s no word yet, though, on whether Hudson or Matthew McConaughey will make appearances. They could be the bosses of said “glib young online columnist” and “oversexed advertising executive.” I’m just throwing out ideas!

And I have many, many more. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is, hands down, my favorite romantic comedy of all time. It’s a near-perfect movie. Kate Hudson deserved an Oscar nomination for it. So I’m personally quite invested in making sure this reboot is incredible. Here are just a few tips for making sure that happens:

  • The spirit of the love fern must be present. Ideally, it’s an actual love fern, but I’ll accept a love ficus or love Venus flytrap.
  • Instead of Celine Dion, the “glib young online reporter” should trick the “oversexed advertising executive” into attending a Billie Eilish concert.
  • Give Kathryn Hahn a starring role.
  • A dog must, must, must pee on a pool table.
  • And that dog can only be named Princess Sophia.
