Kim Kardashian Is Releasing a Documentary About Her Fight for Criminal Justice Reform

In 2018, Kim Kardashian turned her massive platform toward an unexpected cause: criminal justice reform. That year, Kim Kardashian petitioned President Trump to commute the prison sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, a woman who’d been incarcerated since 1996 for a nonviolent drug charge. Kardashian’s lobbying led to Johnson’s full pardon, but her fight for criminal justice reform hasn’t stopped since then—and audiences will soon get a much closer look at her work.

The reality star is releasing a documentary, Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project, that will take viewers behind-the-scenes of her work in criminal justice reform. Viewers will follow Kardashian and a team of legal experts as they examine four cases in which prisoners may have been unfairly sentenced. The two-hour documentary premieres on Oxygen on April 5 at 8 p.m.

“There are a lot of people who deserve a second chance, but many do not have the resources to make it happen,” Kardashian said in a statement released by Oxygen. “I want to help elevate these cases to a national level to effect change, and this documentary is an honest depiction of me learning about the system and helping bring tangible results to justice reform.”

From what we’ve seen so far, the documentary is a revealing look at the effort that goes into pardoning unfair sentences, and how far Kardashian has gone to learn about the issue. In the trailer, the KKW mogul speaks with prisoners who had been handed life sentences for nonviolent offenses. She also lobbies public officials and collaborates with legal teams to facilitate earlier releases. (You’ll have to watch to find out if she’s successful.)

The documentary is only two hours, but it covers a life-changing experience for Kardashian. “I went into this knowing nothing, and then my heart completely opened up,” she says in the trailer. “People deserve a second chance.”

This documentary won’t be the last we see of the star’s work in criminal justice reform. In an interview with Vogue last April, Kardashian revealed that she plans to become a lawyer and will take the bar exam in 2022. She made the decision to pursue law after seeing a “really good result” with her work on Johnson’s case. “I’ve always known my role, but I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society,” she told Vogue. “I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more.”

It’s Finally Happening: Everlane Is Releasing a Sneaker

Whenever Everlane introduces a new shoe style, its fans—which include celebrities like Meghan Markle and Angelina Jolie—are ready. They’ll join wait lists that will already be thousands deep to score a pair of the brand’s ethically made minimal styles. So far, Everlane’s footwear selection has focused on those sophisticated, seasonless silhouettes people don’t swap out every season—the loafer, the boot, the low block heel. One major shoe that went unrepresented, though? The sneaker.

“We’ve known all along that, in many ways, sneakers are the future of footwear,” Alison Melville, Everlane’s general manager of footwear and accessories, tells Glamour. “As apparel and culture [become more casual], footwear is going right along with it. It was less that we were resisting [adding a sneaker] and more that we wanted to take our time and do it right.”

A big concern for the Everlane team was, in a time when everyone has their version of an everyday sneaker, creating something that stood out in the market and could still live in a closet for years. “Striking a balance between those two things is a really big challenge,” she says. “That’s why it took us more than two years.”

The goal was to design something that “had broad appeal across gender, across ages, across all sorts of demographics, while also being recognizable and distinctive.” The result—which is being announced today and released on April 25—is a unisex style called the Trainer. It’ll be available in seven different colors and retail for $98. Aesthetically, it reads like a cooler interpretation of the inescapable “dad sneaker” trend. And though there’s no explicit branding on it, there’s one Everlane hallmark woven into the design: a triangle quarter panel at the top of the shoe.

“We designed it with the recognition that it’s not an athletic shoe,” explains Melville. “Most people wear sneakers for nonathletic reasons, and we wanted to design a sneaker that had that truly versatile end use in mind. We want to produce timeless classics that are basic and that last you a long time, from both a quality and a trend perspective. They’re not splash-in-the-pan fashion items. What we’ve learned across [footwear]—whether it’s the Day Glove or the Day Heel or the Day Boot—is that when you can drill down to the essentialness of a product and deliver on it, you’ll find detailing that sets it apart.”

There was also the environmental impact to consider. As a company, Everlane is committed to reducing waste and to increase transparency in the fashion industry. (Last year it pledged to remove all virgin plastic from its supply chain by 2021.) When it came time to build something that has as many components as a sneaker, the brand wanted to ensure everything from the sole to the laces was aligned with that mission—and also to continue educating customers.

That’s why Everlane’s doing this launch a little differently: Instead of simply adding the Trainer to its existing footwear section, it’s creating a brand-new label, Tread by Everlane. “We wanted to make sure that the sneaker had its own brand platform where we could talk about this message, of reducing the burden of plastic,” says Melville. They’ll also continue talking about carbon offsetting and reducing water usage. “Those conversations are quite nuanced, in terms of sustainability,” she adds. The new label will “make sure that we have the platform to tell the whole story.”

With Tread by Everlane, the brand is hoping to work toward creating “the world’s lowest-impact sneakers.” Melville is tight-lipped about what other styles might be coming but assures that the team is “focused on the Trainer for the foreseeable future.”

Ahead, shop Everlane‘s long-anticipated foray into sneakers.

Kendall Jenner Just Blasted TMZ for Releasing the Location of Her Home

Kendall Jenner tweeted a few choice words to TMZ on Thursday (October 16) after the outlet published a news piece that revealed the exact location of her home.

“I understand what I’ve signed up for but when you release the exact location to where I live THAT is when you’re putting my life in danger. Your home is your safe haven, but for me, ‘cuz of outlets like you, my home is anything BUT. You should be ashamed of yourself,” she wrote on Twitter. “And how do you guys think these terrifying people know where my house is? ‘Cuz you release not only photos but my location. It is so beyond unsafe. Is this not our one ounce of privacy we can get?”

Ironically, the TMZ piece that detailed this information was about a stalker who nearly broke into Jenner’s house. Law enforcement told TMZ that the 30-something man specifically broke into the community—which has also housed celebrities like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Christina Aguilera—to target Jenner’s home. This man also reportedly trespassed last month and was found by Jenner’s pool before fleeing the scene. TMZ reports that Jenner’s lawyer is trying to get the police to press charges against him for felony stalking.

Unfortunately, this isn’t Jenner’s first incident of feeling unsafe in her own residence. In 2017 she moved into a new house after her last home in West Hollywood was the site of yet another trespassing and stalking incident, plus a burglary.

Thinx is Releasing a $400 Period Sex Blanket

During the last five years, our bedrooms have enjoyed a modern renaissance. We’ve seen the disruption of the mattress industry by companies like Casper, Leesa, and Tomorrow; our sheets have seen a shakeup with the growth of hip new direct-to-consumer bedding purveyors like Parachute, Brooklinen, and Boll & Branch; even our sex toys are more thoughtful than they used to be. Better sleep, better sheets, better sex: It’s basically a triple win.

Still, the period panties brand THINX believes there’s something missing from the mix. And that something is a blanket you can throw down when you’re on your period and want to have sex.

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking: Wait, I have a towel for that. As someone who exclusively buys white sheets (and who’s easily driven to madness, Lady Macbeth style, by a stubborn stain) the idea that a carnal activity would leave my bedding speckled red and brown has always made the supremely unsexy, “hold on, I’ll get the towel” moment worthwhile. It also turned out that, during my single days, most of the men I encountered were game for period sex. In fact, I recall several of them used the same line—the mess is part of the fun!—as if they’d all attended the same woke male period sex sensitivity training seminar.

More often, I was the one who waffled when there was no towel around. Especially when the scene of the coupling was my expensive, pristine sheets. I am fortunate to have freed myself from period shame back in my teen years, and to currently have a partner who isn’t deterred by that time of the month. But what I realized in my twenties was that even if sex during your period was becoming less of a big deal for dudes, the “fun mess” still required cleanup—and I was often still the one with the detergent and scrub brush in the aftermath. Maybe it’s because I knew more about how to lift stains. Maybe it’s because domestic chores will be the last bastion of gender power imbalance in the bedroom. In any event, throwing down a towel was the easiest way to avoid all that.

The THINX blanket is, admittedly, much better looking than the towel method. One side is pale lavender satin—a coverlet you could easily leave out at the end of your bed, or on the back of your couch, without anyone thinking, “I bet that’s a period sex blanket.” The cotton-backed side is where the magic happens: It utilizes the same four-layer technology that THINX underwear does, and purports to be capable of absorbing whatever you send its way. The Period Sex Blanket—that’s it’s proper name, no need to obfuscate there—is machine washable. But it needs to be hang-dried; depending on your sex schedule, that could be a drawback, though it also claims to be capable of handling “multiple rounds.”

Still, it’s the price tag that gave me the most pause when the press release arrived in my inbox—$369 for a sex blanket! You could buy tens of towels with that money! You could buy dozens of tarps! You could play a game of Twister and just see where things go!

When I asked Maria Molland Selby, the THINX CEO, about the price, she told me it is meant more to be a conversation starter about period sex than something the company expects every woman to bring into her own bedroom. “We’re not expecting to sell thousands,” she said, with a laugh. The aim is to take the stigma out of period sex in general, and also sing its praises; if they also wind up selling lots of blankets—well, all the better.

And the thing is: Even in this body positive, sex positive world, that conversational spark something we still sorely need. When I asked certain progressively-minded friends, who will talk about pretty much anything, about their period sex experiences, a few refused to go there with me; others said that their partners refused to go there with them. Others still said that, while their partners would be more than willing, they themselves were still working out complicated feelings about the taboo.

There was another camp, too, who thought that it boiled down to trust, comfort levels, and compatibility. “I think you’re more willing to do the grosser, weird sexual things with someone one you feel comfortable experimenting with,” one women told me, in response to a period sex question I posted to Twitter. The takeaway: Trust and acceptance are not things you can buy, like a fancy, highly absorbent blanket. But we’ve all gotta start somewhere, right?

Jeffrey Campbell and Curve Model La’shaunae Steward Are Releasing Size-Inclusive Shoes

Footwear brand Jeffrey Campbell is addressing a blind spot in its own inventory: shoes designed to fit all bodies.

On Tuesday, the brand announced it was teaming up with curve model La’shaunae Steward to launch a capsule collection of size-inclusive shoes. In an Instagram post about the collaboration, Jeffrey Campbell promised five styles “made to fit your every curve.”

“When we say our shoes are made for everybody we truly mean everyBODY,” the brand captioned an image of Steward from a Girlboss editorial, in which she’s wearing one of the shoes from the collaboration. “Stay tuned. ?”

In an interview with Refinery29, Steward explained that the seed was planted when she and her friend Sanam Sindh, Jeffrey Campbell’s creative director, were discussing the lack of boots on the market for plus-size customers. “I was telling her how a lot of the boots don’t fit thicker legs, and as my friend—who knows how the fashion world doesn’t celebrate fat brown women enough—she saw this as an opportunity for me, an underappreciated curve model,” she said.

The model pointed out that even when brands do attempt to be size-inclusive, they don’t make an effort to create fashionable or attractive products. “So many brands never care about their fat customers,” she told Refinery29. “Most plus-size stores have the ugliest clothes and wide-fitting shoes.”

This capsule marks a huge step forward for size-inclusive shopping, according to Steward—especially considering the reach of an affordable, trend-driven footwear brand such as Jeffrey Campbell. “I grew up never being able to afford the things I like and for [a brand I’ve] loved since a young teenager to believe in me and to acknowledge me is amazing,” Steward said.

Steward is also a body positivity activist who hopes to break barriers in the fashion industry, according to Refinery29—and this collaboration is just the beginning. “[I want to see] girls who actually look like me in high-fashion and walking the runways,” she told Refinery29. “Representation is so important. So many models are glamazons who are 5’7″ or taller. They have small waists and perfect thighs. [For plus-size models, they’re] a size 16 at the biggest. And these are the women ‘representing’ all fat women. I’m 5’3″ and bigger, [and I] also deserve the spotlight!”

All the Signs Taylor Swift Is Releasing New Music Today

It’s been three long years since Taylor Swift released her last album 1989. The record, which won basically all the Grammy Awards in 2016, was more than just a collection of catchy pop songs: It was an event. Swift is one of those rare musicians whose work takes on a life of its own. Every music video, tour outfit, and promotional performance was larger than life; it really felt like we were in the presence of something special—something that was only going to happen once in our lifetime. Truthfully, the only other modern artist who has this same level of influence is Beyoncé. They sit at a very small table of artists who are more than just artists: They’re icons.

That’s why the wait for Swift’s next album has been agonizing—but it looks like new music is finally upon us. All the signs point to today, August 21—the day of the solar eclipse—as the day Swift ushers in her sixth album era. Here’s why:

Swift fans have been thinking for months now that her new music will be space and time-themed—so what better day to begin promo for it than the day of a solar eclipse? And if the eclipse is playing a factor in this new era, it would explain why Swift blacked out her social media channels on Friday (August 18). The solar eclipse, if you’re unfamiliar, literally blacks out the sun for two minutes. These connections aren’t exactly subtle.

And get this: Swift decided to break her social media silence on Eclipse Day. She uploaded a cryptic video of a snake, which is clearly a nod to the Kim Kardashian-Snapchat feud from last year. (If you recall, people started associating Swift with the snake emoji because of it.)

Joseph Kahn, Swift’s longtime music video collaborator, added fuel to this fire when he tweeted these two things on Monday:

To top it all off, radio stations are also teasing that something big and Swift-related is happening today:

But. What. Is. Happening? Honestly, who knows at this point? Fan theories like this are ridiculous in by nature, but that’s what makes them so fun. Let’s just bask in this pop-music circus, shall we? That is, after all, what Queen Taylor Swift wants.
