Priyanka Chopra Explained Why She Wore a Marchesa Gown to Her Bridal Shower

Priyanka Chopra celebrated her bridal shower at Tiffany & Co. in New York over the weekend, and both the party and her dress—a Marchesa strapless gown with a feathered hem—made headlines. In a new interview with WWD, Chopra explained why she chose to wear a gown from the brand cofounded by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig.

“Georgina’s a friend of mine, and she has been,” Chopra told WWD. “Women supporting women: That’s what we’re all about.”

Marchesa, once a label frequently spotted on the red carpet, has been less prominent among the celebrity crowd since 2017, when the New York Times first published its report on Harvey Weinstein, then Chapman’s husband. (They have since separated.) The connection between the brand and the disgraced Hollywood producer came under scrutiny, and its presence on the awards-show circuit noticeably subsided.

Chopra explained to WWD that she thinks Chapman’s label shouldn’t be sullied by the controversy surrounding the designer’s former husband: “[It’s] not her fault. And I don’t think it’s right to take it out on a self-made woman what somebody in her life did. That’s the wrong attitude. I’ve known her for years, and that was a beautiful gown, and deserved to be worn by a bride-to-be. And it made me feel like a princess. It was the right choice.”

In recent months Marchesa has slowly begun to reemerge: Scarlett Johansson wore one of its gowns to the 2018 Met Gala (the first celebrity to wear the brand on a red carpet since the article was published in October 2017), and one of its designs was featured as part of a climactic scene in Crazy Rich Asians. Chapman also gave her first interview following the Weinstein allegations to Vogue in its June 2018 issue.

Celebrities who have worn Marchesa in 2018 have echoed Chopra’s sentiments. Following the Met Gala, Johansson released a statement about her look, saying: “I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful, and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers.”

Rihanna Looks Like an Actual Barbie in This Ruffled Hot Pink Gown

All weeks are probably good when you’re Rihanna, but this past one especially has been something. The singer/beauty mogul/designer showed her debut Savage x Fenty lingerie show at New York Fashion Week on Wednesday, and promptly followed up the iconic event with another one: her fourth annual Diamond Ball on Thursday, for which she wore an incredible lace catsuit. But this is Rihanna, so even that doesn’t justify an evening crashed on the couch with Netflix: On Friday, she rightfully celebrated the one-year anniversary of her Fenty cosmetics line, which has in a very short time brought a wave of change to the beauty industry.

She teased the magnificent dress we’re about to talk about—because it needs to be talked about—on her way to Fenty’s birthday celebration, held at a JCPenney Sephora location in Brooklyn. How else but with a few Instagram stories?

RiRi stepped out at the event in a strapless Calvin Klein by Appointment gown with major nineties vibes—and a boatload of ruffles cascading along the dress’s hemlines and thigh-high slit. But as remarkable as the dress’s construction was, it was the color that stood out: an eye-popping fuchsia that doesn’t look all that dissimilar from Fenty’s Starlit Hyper-Glitz Lipstick in Gravity. Check it out, below—and the pointy hot-pink heels she pairs with it like a boss:

Although we can’t be sure that this bespoke dress was inspired by that lipstick (or that it wasn’t) it was just as extra as you’d expect for a birthday party at Sephora. Note the Fenty kabuki brush chair and life-sized Diamond Bomb mirror, below:

Lady Gaga Looks Like an Actual Princess in This Unbelievable Valentino Gown

Lady Gaga‘s long-anticipated remake of the 1937 film A Star Is Born made its official debut at the Venice Film Festival this weekend, and Gaga honored the occasion with a complete showstopper of a moment on the red carpet. She showed up in a stunning Valentino couture gown, complete with pale rose feather merlons, looking every bit like royalty.

Whether she’s living her best life on the side of a Venetian water taxi or running around in a meat dress, we obviously live for Gaga fashion moments—and this is one for the Lady Gaga history books. According to the official Valentino Twitter account, the organza gown was created by designer Pierpaolo Piccioli, and it’s called “Flamingo.” (Kaia Gerber actually wore the dress down the Valentino Couture runway earlier this year.)

The whole thing is complete elegance, perfect Hollywood glam, and fit for, well, a star. Early reviews have noted her knockout performance in the Bradley Cooper-directed film, calling her work “electrifying” andmesmerizing.”

But back to the matter at hand: the dress. Check it out from every single angle:

Gorgeous, no? Apparently the film was a hit too: Gaga and Cooper received an eight-minute standing ovation for the film at its premiere from the festival crowds. It’s described as a romantic musical drama that stars Cooper as a country musician; he falls in love with a younger musician, played by Gaga. It’s been made multiple times since 1932, with versions that include a 1954 musical that starred Judy Garland and a rock update that featured Barbra Streisand. Oscar rumors have already started circulating, which means that we might have a chance to see how Gaga stuns at the Academy Awards. Until then, however, we’ll happily keep refreshing photos of this gorgeous Valentino creation.

Why Meghan Markle's Stella McCartney Reception Dress Won't Be on Display With Her Wedding Gown

Looks like we’ve got a bit of a good news/bad news situation on our hands in regards to your prospects of seeing Meghan Markle‘s iconic wedding dresses in real life. While her custom Givenchy Haute Couture ceremony gown by Clare Waight Keller will be on display for the entire world to see as of October 26, the Stella McCartney number she changed into for the evening reception will not. Instead, it’ll be kept private.

According to a spokesperson for The Royal Collection Trust, Markle has chosen to keep the sleek white halter dress as a part of her personal collection instead of showing it off to the public. “Because Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding reception was a private affair, the bride’s second dress will not be showcased,” Hello! reports.

So, you might not be able to see the incredibly glamorous dress that sped through the streets in a vintage Jaguar, but the Givenchy gown Meghan wore to walk down the aisle at St George’s Chapel will be put up at Windsor Castle as part of The Royal Collection Trust’s latest exhibition, “A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” which opens in October. That, plus Markle’s shoes, veil, tiara, and accessories will be on view through January 6, 2019.—before moving to the Palace of Holyroodhouse from June 14, 2019 to October 6, 2019.

If you were a big fan of Markle’s second Royal Wedding dress, though, there’s still the option to go straight to Stella McCartney herself: Earlier this summer, the designer announced she would be creating a limited-edition capsule collection inspired by the Duchess of Sussex. Plus, we have a feeling we’ll be seeing plenty of boatneck and halter wedding gowns over the next few years, thanks to Markle.

First Lady Melania Trump Wears Chanel Haute Couture Gown to First State Dinner

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted their first official State Dinner at the White House Tuesday evening, in honor of French President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron. In keeping with an unofficial custom, FLOTUS paid homage to the guests’ country of origin through her fashion, opting to wear a custom silver gown by Chanel Haute Couture.

PHOTO: Mark Wilson

The style was adapted from a jumpsuit that appeared on the house’s Spring 2018 couture runway, according to Vogue; FLOTUS appears to have requested the pants be changed to a floor-grazing sequin skirt, but that it maintain the same mesh neckline, crystal embellishments, and contrasting sheer hem.

Mrs. Macron, meanwhile, decided on a long-sleeved white dress by Louis Vuitton, also custom.

This isn’t the first time Mrs. Trump wore Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel while in office, choosing a red Chanel coat for the National Christmas Tree Lighting in Washington, D.C., in December 2017.

Historically, FLOTUS’ gowns for State Dinners have been informed by whoever they’re hosting. Michelle Obama famously picked designers and brands who had some sort of connection to the country her guests were from—like how she wore Jason Wu to greet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sophie Trudeau from Canada, and Atelier Versace for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and Agnese Landini of Italy.

Since becoming First Lady, Mrs. Trump has received criticism for the high cost of the clothing she wears to official events, like the time she chose a $2,950 Delpozo dress to deliver a speech that referenced child hunger at the United Nations. An haute couture gown would certainly fall into that bucket, as these incredibly detailed, often meticulously hand-made garments come with exorbitant, only-upon-request price tags—especially if they’ve been customized.

Neither Chanel or Karl Lagerfeld have released a statement about dressing Mrs. Trump for the State Dinner, and requests to Chanel for comment weren’t immediately returned.

Bridal Fashion Week 2018: The Best Wedding Dresses and Gown

To the untrained eye, seeing one bridal collection can feel like seeing them all—yet, season after season, Bridal Fashion Week consistently proves that there are plenty of ways to innovate the traditional wedding gown.

The Spring 2019 collections, which debuted in April in New York, were a little more scaled back than last season’s, with fewer shows on the calendar and more intimate presentations (in lieu of full-blown runways). Still, the fresh takes on wedding wear aplenty. Creating a breathtaking bridal moment doesn’t necessarily equate to overzealous tulle: For many designers, beauty was found in streamlined simplicity—and with a royal wedding just weeks away, you can bet that some tipped their veils to the impending nuptials. And they gave us plenty to dream about with their latest collections,

From bridal legends like Vera Wang to up-and-comers like Alexandra Grecco, these 33 Spring 2019 wedding gowns are among the most gorgeous we’ve seen yet—and they’re certainly worth a year’s wait. Check out some of our favorites.
